Abstract:We define the injectivity radius of a Coxeter polyhedron in H^3 to be half the shortest translation length among hyperbolic/loxodromic elements in the orientation-preserving reflection group. We show that, for finite-volume polyhedra, this number is always less than 2.6339..., and for compact polyhedra it is always less than 2.1225... .

Abstract:The algorithms given in Karney, J. Geodesy 87, 43-55 (2013), to compute geodesics on terrestrial ellipsoids are extended to apply to ellipsoids of revolution with arbitrary eccentricity. For the direct and inverse geodesic problems, this entails implementing the formulation in terms of elliptic integrals given by Legendre and Cayley. The integral for the area of geodesic polygons is computed in terms of the discrete sine transform of the integrand. In all cases, accuracy close to full machine precision is achieved. An open-source implementation of these algorithms is available.

On the Injectivity Radius of the Stiefel Manifold: Numerical investigations and an explicit construction of a cut point at short distance

Abstract:Arguably, geodesics are the most important geometric objects on a differentiable manifold. They describe candidates for shortest paths and are guaranteed to be unique shortest paths when the starting velocity stays within the so-called injectivity radius of the manifold. In this work, we investigate the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold under the canonical metric. The Stiefel manifold $St(n,p)$ is the set of rectangular matrices of dimension $n$-by-$p$ with orthogonal columns, sometimes also called the space of orthogonal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Using a standard curvature argument, Rentmeesters has shown in 2013 that the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold is bounded by $\sqrt{\frac{4}{5}}\pi$. It is an open question, whether this bound is sharp. With the definition of the injectivity radius via cut points of geodesics, we gain access to the information of the injectivity radius by investigating geodesics. More precisely, we consider the behavior of special variations of geodesics, called Jacobi fields. By doing so, we are able to present an explicit example of a cut point. In addition, since the theoretical analysis of geodesics for cut points and especially conjugate points as a type of cut points is difficult, we investigate the question of the sharpness of the bound by means of numerical experiments.

Abstract:The article deals with the geometric locations of points equidistant from two spheres. In all variants of the mutual position of the spheres, the geometric places of the points are two surfaces. When the centers of the spheres coincide with the locus of points equidistant from the spheres, there will be spheres equal to the half-sum and half-difference of the diameters of the original spheres. In three variants of the relative position of the initial spheres, one of the two surfaces of the geometric places of the points is a two-sheet hyperboloid of revolution. It is obtained when: 1) the spheres intersect, 2) the spheres touch, 3) the outer surfaces of the spheres are removed from each other. In the case of equal spheres, a two-sheeted hyperboloid of revolution degenerates into a two-sheeted plane, more precisely, it is a second-order degenerate surface with a second infinitely distant branch. The spheres intersect - the second locus of the points will be the ellipsoid of revolution. Spheres touch - the second locus of points - an ellipsoid of revolution, degenerated into a straight line, more precisely into a zero-quadric of the second order - a cylindrical surface with zero radius. The outer surfaces of the spheres are distant from each other - the second locus of points will be a two-sheet hyperboloid of revolution. The small sphere is located inside the large one - two coaxial confocal ellipsoids of revolution. In all variants of the mutual position of spheres of the same diameters, the common geometrical place of equidistant points is a plane (degenerate surface of the second order) passing through the middle of the segment perpendicular to it, connecting the centers of the original spheres. The second locus of points equidistant from two spheres of the same diameter can be either an ellipsoid of revolution (if the original spheres intersect), or a straight (cylindrical surface with zero radius) connecting the centers of the original spheres when the original spheres touch each other, or a two-sheet hyperboloid of revolution (if continue to increase the distance between the centers of the original spheres).

Abstract:A sharp lower bound for the injectivity radius in noncompact nonnegatively curved Riemannian manifolds involving their soul goes back to Šarafutdinov. We generalize this bound to the setting of Alexandrov spaces. Our main theorem reads as follows. If the injectivity radius of an Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature does not coincide with the one of its souls, then it is at least $ \pi K^{-1/2} $, where $ K $ is an upper curvature bound. We introduce the soul of Alexandrov spaces in some detail and compare two notions of injectivity radii.

Abstract:The injectivity radius of a manifold is an important quantity, both from a theoretical point of view and in terms of numerical applications. It is the largest possible radius within which all geodesics are unique and length-minimizing. In consequence, it is the largest possible radius within which calculations in Riemannian normal coordinates are well-defined. A matrix manifold that arises frequently in a wide range of practical applications is the compact Stiefel manifold of orthogonal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We observe that geodesics on this manifold are space curves of constant Frenet curvatures. Using this fact, we prove that the injectivity radius on the Stiefel manifold under the Euclidean metric is $\pi$.

Abstract:We show that in Euclidean 3-space any closed curve $\gamma$ which contains the unit sphere within its convex hull has length $L\geq4\pi$, and characterize the case of equality. This result generalizes the authors' recent solution to a conjecture of Zalgaller. Furthermore, for the analogous problem in $n$ dimensions, we include the estimate $L\geq Cn\sqrt{n}$ by Nazarov, which is sharp up to the constant $C$.

More precisely, we quantify the growth rate of the number of such minimal spheres, and describe their asymptotic behavior as the ellipsoids converge to a cylinder.

Abstract:In this paper have been investigated the loci equidistant from sphere and plane, and properties of obtained surfaces have been studied. Four options for possible mutual arrangement of plane and sphere have been considered: the plane passes through the center of the sphere; the plane intersects the sphere; the plane is tangent to the sphere; the plane passes outside the sphere. In all options of the mutual arrangement of the sphere and the plane, the loci are two surfaces - two coaxial confocal paraboloids of revolution. The general properties of the obtained paraboloids of revolution have been studied: foci and vertices positions, axes of rotation, the distance from the sphere center to the vertices of the paraboloids, the distance between the vertices of the paraboloids, and the position of the directorial planes have been defined. Have been derived equations for the surfaces of the loci equidistant from the sphere and the plane: various paraboloids of revolution. The loci in each of the four options for the possible mutual arrangement of the plane and the sphere are as follows. 1. The original plane passes through the sphere center – two coaxial confocal multidirectional paraboloids of revolution symmetric relative to the original plane. 2. The initial plane intersects the sphere – two coaxial confocal multidirectional but not symmetrical paraboloids of revolution, since the circle of intersection of the plane and the sphere does not coincide with the diameter of the sphere great circle. 3. The plane is tangent to the sphere – a paraboloid of revolution and a straight line (more precisely, a second order zero-quadric – a cylindrical surface with zero radius) passing through the tangency point of the plane and the sphere and the sphere center. 4. The plane passes outside the sphere – the equidistant loci will be two coaxial confocal unidirectional paraboloids of revolution.

Abstract:We give an accessible introduction and elaboration on the methods used in obtaining a geodesic, which is the curve of shortest length connecting two points lying on the surface of a function. This is found through computing what's known as the variation of a functional, a "function of functions" of sorts. Geodesics are of great importance with wide applications, e.g. dictating the path followed by aircraft (great-circles), how light travels through space, assist in the process of mapping a 2D image to a 3D surface, and robot motion planning.

Abstract:There are not so many kinds of surface of revolution whose cut locus structure have been determined, although the cut locus structures of very familiar surfaces of revolution (in Euclidean space) such as ellipsoids, 2-sheeted hyperboloids, paraboloids, and tori are now known. Except for tori, the known cut locus structures are very simple, i.e., a single point or an arc. In this article, a new family {M_n}_n of 2-spheres of revolution with simple cut locus structure is introduced. This family is also new in the sense that the number of points on each meridian which assume a local minimum or maximum of the Gaussian curvature function on the meridian goes to infinity as n goes to infinity.

Abstract:We show that the shortest closed geodesic on a 2-sphere with non-negative curvature has length bounded above by three times the diameter. We prove a new isoperimetric inequality for 2-spheres with pinched curvature; this allows us to improve our bound on the length of the shortest closed geodesic in the pinched curvature setting.

Abstract:Abstract This paper gives a partial confirmation of a conjecture ofAgarwal, Har-Peled, Sharir, and Varadarajan that the totalcurvature of ashortest path on the boundary of a convex polyhedron in R3cannot bearbitrarily large. It is shown here that the conjecture holds for a class ofpolytopesfor which the ratio of the radii of the circumscribed and inscribed ball isbounded. Onthe other hand, an example is constructed to show that the total curvatureof ashortest path on the boundary of a convex polyhedron in R3 canexceed 2π. Another example shows that the spiralling number of ashortest path on the boundary of a convex polyhedron can be arbitrarilylarge.

Abstract:We give lower bounds on the maximal injectivity radius for a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold M with first Betti number 2, under some additional topological hypotheses. A corollary of the main result is that if M has first Betti number 2 and contains no fibroid surface then its maximal injectivity radius exceeds 0.32798. For comparison, Andrew Przeworski showed, with no topological restrictions, that the maximal injectivity radius exceeds arcsinh(1/4) = 0.247..., while the authors showed that if M has first Betti number at least 3 then the maximal injectivity exceeds log(3)/2 = 0.549.... The proof combines a result due to Przeworski with techniques developed by the authors in the 1990s.

Abstract:The classic Lusternik--Schnirelmann theorem states that there are three distinct simple periodic geodesics on any Riemannian 2-sphere $M$. It has been proven by Y. Liokumovich, A. Nabutovsky and R. Rotman that the shortest three such curves have lengths bounded in terms of the diameter $d$ of $M$. We show that at any point $p$ on $M$ there exist at least two distinct simple geodesic loops (geodesic segments that start and end at $p$) whose lengths are respectively bounded by $8d$ and $14d$.

New free boundary minimal annuli of revolution in the 3-sphere

Abstract:We rigorously establish the existence of many free boundary minimal annuli with boundary in a geodesic sphere of $\mathbb{S}^3$. These arise as compact subdomains of a one-parameter family of complete minimal immersions of $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ into $\mathbb{S}^3$ described by do Carmo and Dajczer [1]. While the free boundary minimal annuli we exhibit may have self-intersections and may not be contained in a geodesic ball, we show that there is at least a one-parameter family of embedded examples that are contained in geodesic balls whose radius may be less than, equal to or greater than $\pi$/2. After explaining the connection to Otsuki tori [13], we establish lower bounds on the number of free boundary minimal annuli contained in each Otsuki torus in terms of the corresponding rational number. Finally, we show that some of the recent work of Lee and Seo [7] on isoperimetric inequalities and of Lima and Menezes [10] on index bounds extends to geodesic balls equal to or larger than a hemisphere.
