Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:We define the injectivity radius of a Coxeter polyhedron in H^3 to be half the shortest translation length among hyperbolic/loxodromic elements in the orientation-preserving reflection group. We show that, for finite-volume polyhedra, this number is always less than 2.6339..., and for compact polyhedra it is always less than 2.1225... .

Abstract:Let $L$ be an even indefinite lattice. We show that if $L$ splits off a hyperbolic plane and a scaled hyperbolic plane, then the Kudla-Millson lift of genus $1$ associated to $L$ is injective. Our result includes as special cases all previously known injectivity results on the whole space of elliptic cusp forms available in the literature. In particular, we also consider the Funke-Millson twist of the lift. Further, we provide geometric applications on locally symmetric spaces of orthogonal type.

Abstract:A sharp lower bound for the injectivity radius in noncompact nonnegatively curved Riemannian manifolds involving their soul goes back to Šarafutdinov. We generalize this bound to the setting of Alexandrov spaces. Our main theorem reads as follows. If the injectivity radius of an Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature does not coincide with the one of its souls, then it is at least $ \pi K^{-1/2} $, where $ K $ is an upper curvature bound. We introduce the soul of Alexandrov spaces in some detail and compare two notions of injectivity radii.

Abstract:Motivated by the aspect of large-scale symplectic topology, we prove that for any pair $g_0, \, g_1$ of complete Riemannian metrics of bounded curvature and \emph{of injectivity radius bounded away from zero}, the convex sum $g_s: = (1-s ) g_0 + s g_1$ also has bounded curvature depending only on the curvature bounds $\|R_{g_i}\|_{C^0}$ of $g_0$ or $g_1$, and that the injectivity radii of $g_s$ have uniform lower bound depending only on the derivative bounds $\|R_{g_i}\|_{C^1} = \|R_{g_i}\|_{C^0} + \|DR_{g_i}\|_{C^0}$.

On the Injectivity Radius of the Stiefel Manifold: Numerical investigations and an explicit construction of a cut point at short distance

Abstract:Arguably, geodesics are the most important geometric objects on a differentiable manifold. They describe candidates for shortest paths and are guaranteed to be unique shortest paths when the starting velocity stays within the so-called injectivity radius of the manifold. In this work, we investigate the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold under the canonical metric. The Stiefel manifold $St(n,p)$ is the set of rectangular matrices of dimension $n$-by-$p$ with orthogonal columns, sometimes also called the space of orthogonal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Using a standard curvature argument, Rentmeesters has shown in 2013 that the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold is bounded by $\sqrt{\frac{4}{5}}\pi$. It is an open question, whether this bound is sharp. With the definition of the injectivity radius via cut points of geodesics, we gain access to the information of the injectivity radius by investigating geodesics. More precisely, we consider the behavior of special variations of geodesics, called Jacobi fields. By doing so, we are able to present an explicit example of a cut point. In addition, since the theoretical analysis of geodesics for cut points and especially conjugate points as a type of cut points is difficult, we investigate the question of the sharpness of the bound by means of numerical experiments.

Abstract:The injectivity radius of a manifold is an important quantity, both from a theoretical point of view and in terms of numerical applications. It is the largest possible radius within which all geodesics are unique and length-minimizing. In consequence, it is the largest possible radius within which calculations in Riemannian normal coordinates are well-defined. A matrix manifold that arises frequently in a wide range of practical applications is the compact Stiefel manifold of orthogonal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We observe that geodesics on this manifold are space curves of constant Frenet curvatures. Using this fact, we prove that the injectivity radius on the Stiefel manifold under the Euclidean metric is $\pi$.

Strengthened injectivity radius bounds for manifolds with positive scalar curvature

Abstract:Green's inequality shows that a compact Riemannian manifold with scalar curvature at least $n(n-1)$ has injectivity radius at most $\pi$, and that equality is achieved only for the radius 1 sphere. In this work we show how extra topological assumptions can lead to stronger upper bounds. The topologies we consider are $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{T}^{n-k-2}\times\mathbb{R}^k$ for $n\leq 7$ and $0\leq k\leq 2$ and 3-manifolds with positive scalar curvature except lens spaces $L(p,q)$ with $p$ odd. We also prove a strengthened inequality for $3$-manifolds with positive scalar curvature and large diameter. Our proof uses previous results of Gromov and Zhu.

Abstract:Abstract I study several problems about the symmetric space associated with the Lie group . These problems are connected to an algorithm based on Poincaré's Fundamental Polyhedron Theorem, designed to determine generalized geometric finiteness properties for subgroups of . The algorithm is analogous to the original one in hyperbolic spaces, while the Riemannian distance is replaced by an ‐invariant premetric. The main results of this paper are twofold. In the first part, I focus on questions that occurred in generalizing Poincaré's Algorithm to my symmetric space. I describe and implement an algorithm that computes the face‐poset structure of finitely sided polyhedra, and construct an angle‐like function between hyperplanes. In the second part, I study further questions related to hyperplanes and Dirichlet–Selberg domains in my symmetric space. I establish several criteria for the disjointness of hyperplanes and classify particular Abelian subgroups of based on whether their Dirichlet–Selberg domains are finitely sided or not.

Abstract:We study the tangential case in 2-dimensional almost-Riemannian geometry. We analyse the connection with the Martinet case in sub-Riemannian geometry. We compute estimations of the exponential map which allow us to describe the conjugate locus and the cut locus at a tangency point. We prove that this last one generically accumulates at the tangency point as an asymmetric cusp whose branches are separated by the singular set.

Abstract:We prove that for any discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique up to scaling inversive distance circle packing in the discrete conformal equivalent class, whose polyhedral metric meets the target curvature. We prove it by constructing diffeomorphism between fiber bundles with cell decomposition based on Teichmüller spaces, and each discrete conformal equivalent class is a fiber passing through finite cell with respect to triangulations, which means we can do surgery on the discrete Ricci flow by edge flipping using a generalized Ptolemy equation to ensure it converge and never blow up.

Injectivity theorems and cubical descent for schemes, stacks, and analytic spaces

Abstract:We prove relative injectivity, torsion-freeness, and vanishing theorems for generalized normal crossing pairs on schemes, algebraic stacks, formal schemes, semianalytic germs of complex analytic spaces, rigid analytic spaces, Berkovich spaces, and adic spaces locally of weakly finite type over a field, all in equal characteristic zero. We give a uniform proof for all these theorems in all the categories of spaces mentioned above, which were previously only known for varieties and complex analytic spaces due to work of Ambro and Fujino. Ambro and Fujino's results are integral in the proofs of the fundamental theorems of the minimal model program for (semi-)log canonical pairs and the theory of quasi-log structures. Our results resolve a significant barrier to extending these results on (semi-)log canonical pairs and quasi-log structures beyond the setting of varieties and complex analytic spaces. In order to prove our most general injectivity theorems, we generalize to all these categories of spaces a criterion due to Guillén and Navarro Aznar characterizing when functors defined on smooth varieties extend to all varieties. This extension result uses cubical hyperresolutions, which we construct in all categories of spaces mentioned above. Our extension result is very general and is of independent interest. We use this extension result to prove our injectivity theorems for generalized normal crossing pairs. We also apply our extension result to develop the theoretical foundations for the Deligne-Du Bois complex in these categories of spaces and to construct a weight filtration on the (pro-)étale cohomology of schemes and rigid analytic spaces. These results establish some aspects of Deligne-Hodge theory in all categories of spaces mentioned above.

Abstract:We study all four-dimensional simply-connected indecomposable non-semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces whose metric has signature (2,2). We present models and compute their isometry groups. We solve the problem of the existence or non-existence of compact quotients by properly acting discrete subgroups of the isometry group. This continues and completes earlier work by Maeta.

Abstract:This is an expository survey with two goals. 1) The primary goal is to discuss and highlight the impact of two recent influential ideas in geometric group theory. The first of which is the notion of an injective metric space which is a rich class of spaces that was imported to geometric group theory by Lang and have shown to be of a great effect. The second is Behrstock-Hagen-Sisto's cubical approximation theorem which provides a novel and particularly successful approach for studying mapping class groups (of finite type surfaces) and more generally, hierarchically hyperbolic groups. 2) Our second goal is to demonstrate how numerous geodesic metric spaces including hyperbolic spaces, CAT(0) spaces, and hierarchically hyperbolic spaces admit a strikingly rich equivariant wall structure: a discovery that was inspired by the aforementioned machines; the cubical approximation theorem as well as injective metric spaces.

Abstract:We prove the following conjecture of Margulis. Let $G$ be a higher rank simple Lie group and let $\Lambda\le G$ be a discrete subgroup of infinite covolume. Then, the locally symmetric space $\Lambda\backslash G/K$ admits injected balls of any radius. This can be considered as a geometric interpretation of the celebrated Margulis normal subgroup theorem. However, it applies to general discrete subgroups not necessarily associated to lattices. Yet, the result is new even for subgroups of infinite index of lattices. We establish similar results for higher rank semisimple groups with Kazhdan's property (T). We prove a stiffness result for discrete stationary random subgroups in higher rank semisimple groups and a stationary variant of the Stück-Zimmer theorem for higher rank semisimple groups with property (T). We also show that a stationary limit of a measure supported on discrete subgroups is almost surely discrete.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex manifold, and let $Y$ and $D$ be two reduced simple-normal-crossing (snc) divisors on $X$ with no common irreducible components. Given a proper locally Kähler morphism $\pi \colon X \to \Delta$ from $X$ to a complex analytic space $\Delta$, we prove Fujino's conjecture on the injectivity theorem in the relative setting in a generalized form. Specifically, we establish an injectivity result for the higher direct images under $\pi$ for the lc pairs $(X, D)$ as well as $(Y, D_Y)$, where $D_Y := D \cap Y$. As an application, this result immediately implies the injectivity theorem on holomorphically convex Kähler manifolds with reduced snc divisors. The main technique in the proof consists of the theory of harmonic integrals together with residue formulae associated with adjoint ideal sheaves, which are developed from our previous work for the absolute case (where $\Delta$ is a point and $X$ is compact). Additionally, we make use of the Takegoshi harmonic forms to deal with the non-compactness of $X$.

Abstract:By making use of the classification of real simple Lie algebra, we get the maximum of the squared length of restricted roots case by case, and thus get the upper bounds of sectional curvature for irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type. As an application, this paper verifies Sampson's conjecture in most cases for irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type.

Abstract:We prove that if an RCD space has a regular isometric immersion in a Euclidean space, then the immersion is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map. This result leads us to prove that if a compact non-collapsed RCD space has an isometric immersion in a Euclidean space via an eigenmap, then the eigenmap is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map to a sphere, which generalizes a fundamental theorem of Takahashi in submanifold theory to a non-smooth setting. Applications of these results include a topological sphere theorem and topological finiteness theorems, which are new even for closed Riemannian manifolds.
