Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF-177) was synthesized, characterized and evaluated for hydrogen adsorption as a potential adsorbent for hydrogen storage. The hydrogen adsorption equilibrium and kinetic data were measured in a volumetric unit at low pressure and in a magnetic suspension balance at hydrogen pressure up to 100bar. The MOF-177 adsorbent was characterized with nitrogen adsorption for pore textural properties, scanning electron microscopy for morphology and particle size, and X-ray powder diffraction for phase structure. The MOF-177 synthesized in this work was found to have a uniform pore size distribution with median pore size of 12.7Å, a higher specific surface area (Langmuir: 5994m2/g; BET: 3275m2/g), and a higher hydrogen adsorption capacity (11.0wt.% excess adsorption, 19.67wt.% absolute adsorption) than previously reported values on MOF-177. Freundlich equation fits well the hydrogen adsorption isotherms at low and high pressures. Diffusivity and isosteric heat of hydrogen adsorption were estimated from the hydrogen adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data measured in this work.
Computational Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ammonia Capture from H2/N2/NH3 Mixtures

Abstract:The separation of ammonia from H2/N2/NH3 mixtures is an important step in ammonia decomposition for hydrogen production and ammonia synthesis from H2 and N2 based nonaqueous technologies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as potential materials for capturing ammonia. In the present work, high-throughput screening of 2932 Computation-Ready Experimental MOFs (CoRE MOFs) was carried out for ammonia capture from H2/N2/NH3 mixtures by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. It was found that the high-performing MOFs are characterized by tube-like channels, moderate LCD (largest cavity diameter) (4-7.5 Å), and high Q st 0(NH3) (the isosteric heat of NH3 adsorption) (>45 kJ/mol). MOFs with high NH3 adsorption capacity often feature moderate surface area, while the surface area of MOFs with high NH3 selectivity is relatively lower, which limits the NH3 adsorption capacity. Q st 0 and the Henry's constant (K H ) are two energy descriptors describing the interactions between adsorbents and adsorbates. The former has a stronger correlation with the adsorption selectivity, while the latter has a stronger correlation with the adsorption capacity. By analyzing the molecular density distribution of adsorbates in high-performing MOFs, it was found that unsaturated coordinated metal sites provide the main functional binding sites for NH3. Most MOFs with high NH3 selectivity have multiple different metal nodes or other atoms except C, O, and H, such as N and P. Multiple metal nodes and nonmetallic atoms provide more functional binding sites. Finally, the adsorption behavior with various concentrations of gas mixtures was examined to verify the universality of the screening calculations, and the effect of framework flexibility on adsorption performance was explored.

Abstract:The presence of active sites in metal-organic framework (MOF) materials can control and affect their performance significantly in adsorption and catalysis. However, revealing the interactions between the substrate and active sites in MOFs at atomic precision remains a challenging task. Here, we report the direct observation of binding of NH3 in a series of UiO-66 materials containing atomically dispersed defects and open Cu(I) and Cu(II) sites. While all MOFs in this series exhibit similar surface areas (1111-1135 m2 g-1), decoration of the -OH site in UiO-66-defect with Cu(II) results in a 43% enhancement of the isothermal uptake of NH3 at 273 K and 1.0 bar from 11.8 in UiO-66-defect to 16.9 mmol g-1 in UiO-66-CuII. A 100% enhancement of dynamic adsorption of NH3 at a concentration level of 630 ppm from 2.07 mmol g-1 in UiO-66-defect to 4.15 mmol g-1 in UiO-66-CuII at 298 K is observed. In situ neutron powder diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and electron paramagnetic resonance, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopies, coupled with modeling reveal that the enhanced NH3 uptake in UiO-66-CuII originates from a {Cu(II)···NH3} interaction, with a reversible change in geometry at Cu(II) from near-linear to trigonal coordination. This work represents the first example of structural elucidation of NH3 binding in MOFs containing open metal sites and will inform the design of new efficient MOF sorbents by targeted control of active sites for NH3 capture and storage.

Abstract:The artificial ammonia synthesis via electrochemical nitrate reduction has met increasing research interest, but it is still necessary to develop advanced catalysts with high nitrate-to-ammonia capability. Herein, we propose and demonstrate a one-step method to construct binder-free Cu foam-supported oxygen vacancy-rich Cu/CuOx in-plane heterostructured nanosheet arrays (Cu/CuOx/CF). In addition to exposing ample active sites, the two-dimensional nanosheet morphology greatly facilitates the mass/charge-transfer process during electrocatalysis. Besides, the in-plane heterojunctions and rich oxygen vacancies induced synergistic effect can modulate the electronic structure of active sites and thus tune the adsorption properties of the reactant intermediates and inhibit the formation of undesirable byproducts, which is conducive to the further improvement of nitrate reduction activity. As a result, these advantages endow the Cu/CuOx/CF with superior performance for ammonia synthesis via nitrate electroreduction, achieving high ammonia selectivity (95.00%) and Faradaic efficiency (93.58%).

Abstract:We report the high NH3 uptake in a series of copper-carboxylate materials, namely MFM-100, MFM-101, MFM-102, MFM-126, MFM-127, MFM-190(F), MFM-170, and Cu-MOP-1a. At 273 K and 1 bar, MFM-101 shows an exceptional uptake of 21.9 mmol g-1. The presence of Cu(II)⋯NH3 interactions and changes in coordination at the [Cu2(O2CR)4] paddlewheel are analysed and discussed.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is a promising energy resource owing to its high hydrogen density. However, its widespread application is restricted by the lack of efficient and corrosion-resistant storage materials. Here, we report high NH3 adsorption in a series of robust metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, MFM-300(M) (M = Fe, V, Cr, In). MFM-300(M) (M = Fe, V-III, Cr) show fully reversible capacity for >20 cycles, reaching capacities of 16.1, 15.6, and 14.0 mmol g(-1), respectively, at 273 K and 1 bar. Under the same conditions, MFM-300(V-IV) exhibits the highest uptake among this series of MOFs of 17.3 mmol g(-1). In situ neutron powder diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirm that the redox-active V center enables host-guest charge transfer, with V-IV being reduced to V-III and NH3 being oxidized to hydrazine (N2H4). A combination of in situ inelastic neutron scattering and DFT modeling has revealed the binding dynamics of adsorbed NH3 within these MOFs to afford a comprehensive insight into the application of MOF materials to the adsorption and conversion of NH3.

Abstract:Ammonia uptake by high-capacity and high-porosity sorbents is a promising approach to its storage and release, capture and mitigation, and chemical separation. Here, we examined the ammonia sorption behavior of several versions of an archetypal zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) material, NU-1000-a meso- and microporous crystalline compound having the empirical formula (1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoate)pyrene)(2) Zr-6(mu(3)-O)(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)(H2O)(4)(OH)(4) with linkers and nodes arranged to satisfy a csq topology. Depending on the thermal treatment protocol used prior to sorption measurements, ammonia can physisorb to NU-1000 via hydrogenbonding and London-dispersion interactions and chemisorb via Bronsted acid-base reactions with node-integrated proton donors (mu(3)-hydroxos) and node-ligated proton donors (terminal hydroxos), via simple coordination at open Zr(IV) sites, or via dissociative coordination to Zr(IV) as NH2- and protonation of a node-based mu(3)-oxo. Ammonia adsorption occurs via both reversible and irreversible processes. The latter are of particular interest for protection and mitigation. Notably, the unexpected dissociative adsorption occurs only with nodes that have been fully dehydrated and irreversibly structurally distorted via thermal pre-treatment. a finding that is supported by density functional theory calculations. Differentiating and ranking the relative importance of the many modes of adsorption was facilitated, in part, by the availability of variants of NU-1000 that replace the majority of terminal aqua and hydroxo ligands with nonstructural formate ligands, auxiliary ditopic linkers, or both. The study provides insights into the chemical basis for both reversible and irreversible uptake of ammonia by Zr-MOFs and related compounds. The unexpectedly rich variety of sorption motifs suggest the criteria for designing or choosing MOFs that are optimal for specific ammonia-centric applications.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have emerged as a promising candidate for efficiently eliminating toxic chemicals under ambient conditions. Herein, we demonstrate the remarkable ammonia capture capabilities of the hierarchically porous MOF-808 xerogel (G808) macrostructure and its amino-functionalized analogue (G808-NH2), which were constructed through a sol–gel-based strategy combined with convenient ambient pressure drying. Static isotherm measurements and dynamic breakthrough tests using engineered Zr-MOF xerogel granules were conducted to illuminate the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics for ammonia sorption. The G808 and G808-NH2 xerogels manifest substantially higher ammonia uptake, intensified interfacial interactions, and enhanced irreversible retention toward ammonia compared with the state-of-the-art activated carbon-based materials, particularly at the low-concentration region. Moreover, these hierarchical Zr-MOF nanoarchitectures exhibit extraordinary ammonia removal performance as well as excellent environmental robustness under simulated respirator canister/protection filter circumstances, with the breakthrough capacities of G808-NH2 being individually more than two and one orders of magnitude greater than those for the pristine and metal-amine impregnated carbons. The kinetic ammonia adsorption behaviors can be well delineated by the pseudo-first-order Wheeler-Jonas model. An in-depth discussion on the ammonia sorption regime, detailing five binding patterns besides reversible physisorption with a special focus on the impacts of polar amino groups and humidity, was proposed based on multiple characterizations and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:The development of stable sorbent materials to deliver reversible adsorption of ammonia (NH 3 ) is a challenging task. Here, we report the efficient capture and storage of NH 3 in a series of robust microporous aluminium-based metal-organic framework materials, namely MIL-160, CAU-10-H, Al-fum, and MIL-53(Al). In particular, MIL-160 shows high uptakes of NH 3 of 4.8 and 12.8 mmol g −1 at both low and high pressure (0.001 and 1.0 bar, respectively) at 298 K. The combination of in situ neutron powder diffraction, synchrotron infrared micro-spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals the preferred adsorption domains of NH 3 molecules in MIL-160, with H/D site-exchange between the host and guest and an unusual distortion of the local structure of [AlO 6 ] moieties being observed. Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent ability of MIL-160 to capture of NH 3 with a dynamic uptake of 4.2 mmol g −1 at 1000 ppm. The combination of high porosity, pore aperture size and multiple binding sites promotes the significant binding affinity and capacity for NH 3 , which makes it a promising candidate for practical applications.

Abstract:As both a critical chemical feedstock and an environmental pollutant, the production and utilization of ammonia (NH3) are accompanied by the progress of social civilization. In recent years, research on metal/covalent organic framework materials as NH3 adsorbents has attracted increasing attention due to their high porosity, versatile architecture and tunable functionality. This review was organized to highlight the recent advancement of MOF/COF materials for NH3 sorption, which successively presented the key properties of solid adsorbents and summarized the strategies along with their mechanisms for enhancing NH3 adsorption. In addition, perspectives and outlook regarding the future development of MOF/COF‐based NH3 adsorbents were outlined to meet the requirements of practical applications in different environment.

Abstract:Construction of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with asymmetric connectivity have the potential to expand the scope of their utilization. Herein, we report a robust 9-connected microporous Zr-based MOF, NU-300, assembled from asymmetric tri-carboxylate ligands and Zr6 nodes. As indicated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, there exist uncoordinated carboxylate groups in the structure of NU-300 that can participate in ammonia (NH3) sorption through acid-base interactions which yield high uptake of NH3 at low pressure regions (<0.01 bar). In situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows the interactions between Brønsted acidic sites and NH3, which suggests that NU-300 can be used as a sorbent for NH3 capture at low pressures.
Tailoring Multiple Sites of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient and Reversible Ammonia Adsorption

Abstract:The structural diversity and designability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make these porous materials a strong candidate for NH3 uptake. However, to achieve a high NH3 capture capacity and good recyclability of MOFs at the same time remains a great challenge. Here, a multiple-site ligand screening strategy of MOFs is proposed for highly efficient and reversible NH3 uptake for the first time. Based on the optimized DFT results for various possible ligands, pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylate with multiple sites was screened as the best ligand to construct robust MOF-303(Al) with Al3+. It is experimentally found that the NH3 adsorption capacity of MOF-303(Al) is as high as 19.7 mmol g-1 at 25.0 °C and 1.0 bar, and the NH3 capture is fully reversible and no clear loss of capture capacity is observed after 20 cycles of adsorption-desorption. Various spectral studies verify that the superior NH3 capacity and excellent recyclability of MOF-303(Al) are mainly attributed to the hydrogen bonding interactions of NH3 with multiple sites of MOF-303(Al).

Abstract:We report the reversible adsorption of ammonia (NH3) up to 9.9 mmol g-1 in a robust Al-based metal-organic framework, MFM-303(Al), which is functionalized with free carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups. The unique pore environment decorated with these acidic sites results in an exceptional packing density of NH3 at 293 K (0.801 g cm-3) comparable to that of solid NH3 at 193 K (0.817 g cm-3). In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering reveal the critical role of free -COOH and -OH groups in immobilizing NH3 molecules. Breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent performance of MFM-303(Al) for the capture of NH3 at low concentrations under both dry and wet conditions.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential adsorbents for ammonia capture. However, exploration of high-performing MOFs for ammonia adsorption from humid air is still challenging due to the competitive adsorption between ammonia and water molecules. In this work, high-throughput computational screening of 2932 CoRE MOFs for ammonia capture from humid air was carried out by grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. It was found that the affinities or Henry's constant of MOFs towards ammonia and water molecules play a more important role in determining the ammonia capture performance than their structural properties. Hydrophobic MOFs exhibited higher ammonia selectivity, while hydrophilic MOFs possessed higher ammonia uptake regardless of the strong adsorption competition from water molecules. The coefficient describing the impacts of water adsorption on ammonia uptake (ICH2O_NH3) revealed that although water adsorption promoted the ammonia uptake in the MOFs with ICH2O_NH3 < 0, their ammonia uptake is still lower than that with ICH2O_NH3 > 0 due to their ultra-low affinity towards ammonia. Moreover, analysis of top performers from screening demonstrated that the competitive adsorption between ammonia and water can be identified by their similar density and potential energy distributions of adsorbed ammonia and water molecules.

Abstract:MFM-300(Al) shows reversible uptake of NH3 (15.7 mmolg(-1) at 273 K and 1.0 bar) over 50 cycles with an exceptional packing density of 0.62 g cm(-3) at 293 K. In situ neutron powder diffraction and synchrotron FTIR micro-spectroscopy on ND3@MFM-300(Al) confirms reversible H/D site exchange between the adsorbent and adsorbate, representing a new type of adsorption interaction.

Abstract:Novel composites (MOF-5 and Cu-BDC) based on economically activated carbon have been developed to investigate methane adsorption capacity for ANG applications. The composites were synthesized by adding MOFs precursor in two different weight percent (10% and 40%) to commercial activated carbon under solvothermal conditions (110-120°C). The synthesized adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and BET techniques to gather information about their crystallinity, morphology, and specific surface area. A methane uptake measurement system based on the volumetric method was made to obtain methane adsorption capacity on each composite. Then, the amount of methane adsorption for each one was calculated, and the experimental data were compared with different isotherm adsorption models appropriate for gas adsorption, including Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich. This comparison showed that the best fitting belonged to the Langmuir isotherm model. Also, stability and kinetic studies were done for two MOF-540% @AC and Cu-BDC40% @AC composites. In the kinetics study, experimental data were compared and analyzed in terms of pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion models. The kinetics study showed that methane adsorption happens very fast on the synthesized adsorbents. The amount of methane adsorption at 35 bar and room temperature for pure activated carbon was specified as 4.32 mmol/g. The 10% and 40% of Cu-BDC with activated carbon are 5.59 mmol/g and 6.85 mmol/g, respectively. The capacity of MOF-510% @AC and MOF-540% @AC composites were obtained at 5.9 mmol/g and 7.3 mmol/g, respectively. Increasing methane uptake (70%) was obtained by adding 40 wt.% of MOF-5 to commercial activated carbon.

Abstract:Due to its unique porosity, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great application prospects in the fields of gas adsorption and separation. However, the synthesis of multi-functional MOFs is still a great challenge. Herein, a multi-functional Cu-MOF of {[Cu 2 (TPTA)(H 2 O) 2 ]·2DMF·NMP·4H 2 O}n with a porosity of 62.0 % was designed and synthesized. The H 2 adsorption amount of Cu-MOF is about 289.2 cm 3 g −1 at 77 K and 1 bar. Meanwhile, the selectivity adsorption of Cu-MOF towards CO 2 over CH 4 (V:V = 0.5:0.5), CO 2 /N 2 (V:V = 0.5:0.5) and CO 2 /H 2 (V:V = 0.5:0.5) is 95.1, 139.2 and 147.5, respectively, which is 1.5 times higher than the previously reported Cu-MOFs. The Cu-MOF@NF//AC asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrates high specific capacitance (53.4 F g −1 ) and stability (90.3 % after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, this work presents a novel approach to design multifunctional materials with low temperature hydrogen storage, gas separation and energy storage properties.

Abstract:For practical separation applications, porous sorbents with high separation performance, low heat of adsorption, high stability and low production cost are highly desired. A plausible strategy is herein developed through immobilization of amine sites in a prototype MOF for maximized packing density and selectivity. The CAU-10-NH2 material exhibits high packing density of 0.46 cm3/g, C2H2 adsorption capacity (4.1 mmol/cm3, at 0.5 bar), and high C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 10.8, which outperformed the unfunctionalized benchmark material CAU-10-H. Neutron powder diffraction study reveals the formation of densely packed C2H2 as tetrameric clusters in the pore. The separation performance of CAU-10-NH2 well remains in column separation conditions, with a remarkable dynamic selectivity of 10.9. The good water-stability and one-step synthesis from commercially available precursors make this material a promising candidate for practical C2H2/CO2 separation.

Abstract:We report a porous three-dimensional anionic tetrazolium based CuI -MOF 1, which is capable of cleaving the N-H bond of ammonia and primary amine, as well as the O-H bond of H2 O along with spontaneous H2 evolution. In the gas-solid phase reaction of 1 with ammonia and water vapor, CuI -MOF 1 was gradually oxidized to NH2 -CuII -MOF and OH-CuII -MOF, through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) structural transformations, which was confirmed by XPS, PXRD and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrated that CuI -MOF could lower N-H bond dissociation free energy of ammonia through coordination-induced bond weakening and promote H2 evolution by the reduction potential of 1. To our knowledge, this is the first example of MOFs that activate ammonia and amine in gas-solid manner.

Abstract:The efficient removal, capture, and recycling ofammonia (NH3) constitutes a demanding process, thus the developmentof competent adsorbent materials is highly desirable. The implementation of metal-organicframeworks (MOFs), known for their tunability and high porosity, has attractedmuch attention for NH3 adsorption studies. Here, we report three isoreticularporphyrin-based MOFs containing aluminum (Al-PMOF),gallium (Ga-PMOF), and indium (In-PMOF) rod secondary building unitswith Brønsted acidic bridging hydroxyl groups. NH3 sorption isothermsin Al-PMOF demonstrated reversibilityin isotherms. In contrast, the slopes of the adsorption isotherms in Ga-PMOF and In-PMOF were much steeper than Al-PMOFin lower pressure regions, with a decrease of NH3 adsorbed amounts observedbetween first cycle and second cycle measurements. Diffuse Reflectance InfraredFourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) suggested that the strength of the Brønstedacidic -OH sites was controlled by the identity of the metal, which resulted instronger interactions between ammonia and the framework in Ga-PMOF and In-PMOF comparedto Al-PMOF.
