Abstract:We report a first-principles study of the structure and phase transition of CexTh1-x (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.43, 0.5, 0.6, 0.76 and 1.00) alloys. The structural properties of CexTh1-x under pressure are well predicted. The fcc-bct (face-centered cubic to body-centered tetragonal) transition pressure decreases with the increasing Ce concentration in CexTh1-x. The transition pressure as a function of the Ce concentration of the CexTh1-x alloys can be well described as a second-order polynomial: P = 70.00 - 32.08x - 22.93x(2). (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this work, density functional theory (DFT) based calculations were performed to compute the physical properties (structural stability, mechanical behavior, electronic, thermodynamic, and optical properties) of synthesized MAX phases Hf2SB, Hf2SC, Hf2SeB, Hf2SeC, Hf2TeB, and the as-yet-undiscovered MAX carbide phase Hf2TeC. Calculations of formation energy, phonon dispersion curves, and elastic constants confirmed the stability of the aforementioned compounds. The obtained values of lattice parameters, elastic constants, and elastic moduli of Hf2SB, Hf2SC, Hf2SeB, Hf2SeC, and Hf2TeB showed fair agreement with earlier studies, whereas the values of the mentioned parameters for the predicted Hf2TeC exhibit a good consequence of B replacement by C. The anisotropic mechanical properties are exhibited by the considered MAX phases. The metallic nature and its anisotropic behavior were revealed by the electronic band structure and density of states. The analysis of the thermal properties Debye temperature, melting temperature, minimum thermal conductivity, and Gruneisen parameter confirmed that the carbide phases were more suited than the boride phases considered herein. The MAX phase response to incoming photons further demonstrated that they were metallic. Their suitability for use as coating materials to prevent solar heating was demonstrated by the reflectivity spectra. Additionally, this study demonstrated the impact of B replacing C in the MAX phases.

Abstract:The excess Fe atoms which unavoidably exist in the Fe(Te, Se, S) crystal lattice result in a complicated antiferromagnetic ground state as well as the suppression of superconductivity. As a result, there are still discrepancies on their phase diagrams. In this paper, we report the synthesis of Fe1+delta Te1-xSx (0 <= x <= 0.12) single crystals by a melting method. Superconductivity was greatly improved after air annealing by which we partially removed the excess Fe atoms. Based on the resistivity and susceptibility measurements, we concluded a phase diagram of the Fe1+delta Te1-xSx (0 <= x <= 0.12) system with fewer excess iron atoms. We found a coexisting region (0.07 <= x <= 0.11) of antiferromagnetic order and bulk superconductivity. This phase diagram is similar to that of the K- or Co-doped BaFe2As2 system, as well as the Fe(Te, Se) system, implying a commonality of the iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:In this work, we have employed the first‐principles calculations to investigate the phase stability and mechanical and optoelectronic characteristics of Hf2AX (A═Al, Si and X═C, N) MAX phases. Phase stabilities of Hf2AX compounds have been evaluated by the formation enthalpy computations and phonon dispersion curves, which indicate that all studied compounds are structurally and dynamically stable. The mechanical stability has been determined by elastic stiffness constants, which confirms that the studied MAX phases are mechanically stable. The computed results for Pugh's and Poisson ratios indicate the brittle nature of Hf2AX MAX phases. It is interesting to note that Si‐based MAX phases possess high values of B/G, indicating that they are harder than Al‐based compounds. The obtained band structures and partial density of states indicate the metallic character of all Hf2AX compounds. The strong hybridization of d‐orbitals of Hf with p‐orbitals of N and the comparatively weaker hybridization of p‐orbitals (Hf) with Al/Si p‐orbitals is observed. The presence of pseudogaps near the Fermi energy level emerges due to the orbital hybridization involving Hf, Al/Si, and C/N atoms. The analysis of charge density difference maps reveals the presence of a strong covalent bond between the Hf and C/N atoms, whereas a relatively weaker covalent bond is seen between the Hf and Al/Si atoms. Furthermore, numerous optical characteristics have been investigated to account for the behavior of the Hf2AX compounds to those of impinging electromagnetic rays. The highest absorptivity is noticed within the energy range of 7.5–12.5 eV. The optical spectra in the range of 1.7 eV (IR) to 9 eV ultraviolet (UV) have been observed for the investigated MAX phases, predicting their suitability as proficient energy absorbers within the UV region. The Intriguing properties of Hf2AX compounds are anticipated to be appropriate materials for a variety of applications.

Abstract:The term "MAX phase" refers to a very interesting and important class of layered ternary transition-metal carbides and nitrides with a novel combination of both metal and ceramic-like properties that have made these materials highly regarded candidates for numerous technological and engineering applications. Using (Cr2Hf)2Al3C3 as an example, we demonstrate the possibility of incorporating more types of elements into a MAX phase while maintaining the crystallinity, instead of creating solid-solution phases. The crystal structure and elastic properties of MAX-like (Cr2Hf)2Al3C3 are studied using the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package. Unlike MAX phases with a hexagonal symmetry (P63/mmc, #194), (Cr2Hf)2Al3C3 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group of P21/m (#11) with lattice parameters of a = 5.1739 Å, b = 5.1974 Å, c = 12.8019 Å; {\alpha} = {\beta} = 90°, {\gamma} = 119.8509°. Its structure is found to be energetically much more favorable with an energy (per formula unit) of -102.11 eV, significantly lower than those of the allotropic segregation (-100.05 eV) and solid-solution (-100.13 eV) phases. Calculations using a stress vs. strain approach and the VRH approximation for polycrystals also show that (Cr2Hf)2Al3C3 has outstanding elastic moduli.

Abstract:The crystal structures, mechanical properties and electronic structures of HfCxN1-x have been predicted by using evolutionary structure search followed by the first-principles calculations in this study. The crystal structures predicted indicate that there are 10 thermodynamic stable phases for HfCxN1-x, of which 8 are newly discovered crystal structures and 2 are already known. We investigated the mechanical properties, including the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and Vickers hardness, of all 10 stable phases, and further established the relationship between such properties and the ratio of nitrogen to carbon content. Besides, the Fermi energy level and electronic density of states of these 10 stable phases are calculated as well, and the results reveal the fundamental reason why the mechanical properties change with the ratio of nitrogen to carbon. The predictions of this study agree well with both the experimental data and the previous theoretical evaluations.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have become well-known due to their versatile and tunable physical properties for potential applications, specifically on low-power and optical devices. Here, we explored the structural stability and electronic properties of bulk and thin-film (from 1 up to 6 layers) structures of hafnium dichalcogenides (HfX2, X = S, Se, or Te) using first-principles calculations. Our calculations reveal that the most stable phase is 1T for both thin films and bulk. The bulk and thin-film structures of HfTe2 are semimetallic, while those of HfS2 and HfSe2 are insulating. Both HfS2 and HfSe2 thin films exhibit a decreasing band gap with increasing thickness, while HfTe2 thin films remain semimetallic with increasing number of layers. Moreover, van Hove singularity (vHs), due to the contribution of the pz orbital from S atoms, is observed in 3L-HfS2 at the valence band maximum, which can be further enhanced by applying an in-plane biaxial strain, suggesting possible superconductivity. Finally, the bulk and monolayer band structures of HfTe2, under HSE06 and GGA + U with the effective Hubbard U parameter of 4.6 eV, are in good agreement with the experimental ARPES data. Abstract:Janus materials possess extraordinary physical, chemical, and mechanical properties caused by symmetry breaking. Here, the mechanic properties, electronic structure, magnetic properties, and optical properties of Janus Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers are systematically investigated by the density functional theory. Janus Cr2TeP, Cr2TeAs, and Cr2TeSb are intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) half-metals with wide band gaps between spindown channel and half-metallic gaps. The Curie temperature (T-c) of these monolayers are about 583, 608, and 597 K, respectively by Monte Carlo simulations based on the Heisenberg model. Additionally, it has been found that Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers still exhibit FM half-metallic properties under biaxial strain ranging from -6% to 6%. At last, the Cr2TeP monolayer has a higher absorption coefficient than the Cr2TeAs and Cr2TeSb monolayers in the visible region. The results predict that Janus Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers with novel properties have good potential for applications in future nanodevices.

Abstract:First-principles calculations within density functional theory have been carried out to investigate α2 phase in the Ti3Al based alloy with Zr, Hf, and Sn (6.25at%) elements doped. The lattice constants, total energies and elastic constants were calculated for the supercells. The formation enthalpies, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, and intrinsic hardness were investigated. The ductility of the doped α2 phases was analyzed by the Cauchy pressure, G/B and Poisson’s ratio. The results show that the substitution of Ti(6 h) by Zr, Hf, and the substitution of Al(2n) by Sn can make the doped α2 phase more stable. The inflexibility and hardness of α2 phase can be enhanced by doping with Zr and Hf, while Sn brings the opposite effect. Sn is more powerful to improve the ductility of the doped α2 phase than Hf, but Zr can increase the brittleness. The densities of states (DOS and PDOS) and the difference charge density are obtained to reveal the underlying mechanism of the effect of alloying elements.

First-Principles Study of Structural Stability and Mechanical Properties of Ta–W–Hf Alloys

Abstract:In order to obtain the effect of W and Hf elements on the mechanical properties of Ta–W–Hf alloys, the structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of Ta–xW–6.25Hf (x = 6.25, 12.50, 18.75, 25.00, 31.25, 50.00) alloys were studied using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, and the supercell method. The calculated formation enthalpy and elastic constants clarify that Ta–W–Hf alloys have structural and dynamical stability. The formation enthalpy and the cohesive energy decrease with the increase in W content, and the cohesive energy increases when Hf element is added to Ta–W alloy. In addition, bulk modulus (B), shear modulus (G), and Young's modulus (E) for each of the Ta–xW alloys increase gradually with the increase in W concentration. The B, G, and E of Ta–xW–6.25Hf alloys is lower than that of Ta–xW alloy under the same W content conditions, suggesting that Hf alloying with higher Ta–W concentration becomes softer than the Ta–W alloy. Based on the mechanical characteristic, the B/G and Poisson's ratio of Ta–W–Hf alloys are higher than those of Ta–W alloys with W content over 25%, the ductility of Ta–W–Hf alloys improves with the addition of Hf, and Hf can reduce the anisotropy of Ta–W–Hf alloys. Furthermore, the electronic density of states shows that alloying W and Hf improves the metallicity of Ta. The results in this work provide the underlying insights needed to guide the design of Ta–W–Hf alloys with excellent mechanical properties.

Structural stability, hardness, fracture toughness and melting points of Ta1-xHfxC and Ta1-xZrxC ceramics from first-principles

Abstract:Abstract We systematic investigated the influence of substitution of Hf and Zr atoms for Ta atoms in TaC using first-principles supercell (SC) method and virtual crystal approximation (VCA) methods, including the impurity formation energy, lattice constant, volume, elastic constants, elastic moduli, melting points, fracture toughness and density of states of the Ta 1-x Hfx C and Ta1-x Zrx C ceramics in the whole range of content 0≤ x ≤1. Our calculated results show that the stability of Ta 1-x Hf x C and Ta 1-x Zrx C increases with the increase of Hf and Zr content, and Ta1-x Zrx C is more stable than Ta1-x Hfx C at the same content of Hf and Zr. The lattice constants and volumes dilate with the increase of Hf and Zr content. Furthermore, Ta1-x Hfx C and Ta1-x Zrx C carbides are mechanically stable and brittle. The bulk modulus of Ta1-x Hfx C and Ta1-x Zrx C decreases with the increasing content of Hf and Zr. Moreover, the hardness, fracture toughness, and melting point of Ta1-x Hf x C and Ta1-x Zrx C solid solutions have the peak. In particular, Ta0.8Hf0.2C has the highest hardness, largest fracture toughness and highest melting temperature.
Experimental and theoretical study on electronic structure and mechanical property of TaxHf1−xC

Abstract:TaxHf1−xC can withstand extreme environments, but the challenges in their densification prevent them from being used for many applications. In this paper, a method to prepare dense homogeneous TaxHf1−xC solid solutions with a cubic structure is prosed. Moreover, mechanical properties of TaxHf1−xC are characterized, including the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio. The hardness and Debye temperature are estimated by using empirical equation. The properties related to the electronic structures of TaxHf1−xC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1), including the density of states and Mulliken populations, are systematically calculated by using the first-principles method. From the calculation, we found that all TaxHf1−xC are thermodynamically stable at room temperature. Moreover, Ta0.5Hf0.5C has a higher Young's modulus and shear modulus comparing to Ta0.75Hf0.25C and Ta0.25Hf0.75C. Ta0.75Hf0.25C possesses the highest bulk modulus, suggesting that it has greater comprehensive mechanical properties than the others. In addition, the compositions of their chemical bonds are discussed according to their density of states, population analysis and Debye temperature. We found that the number of valence electrons of transition metals significantly affects their mechanical properties. Finally, the relation between the mechanical properties of TaxHf1−xC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) and the chemical bonds are summarized.

Abstract:212 MAX phase borides are new additions to the MAX phase family with enhanced thermo-mechanical properties. In this article, first-principles calculations have been carried out to explore the mechanical properties, Vickers hardness, elastic anisotropy, thermal properties, and optical properties of predicted thermodynamically stable MAX compounds Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn). The structural properties are compared with the available data to assess the validity of calculations. The mechanical stability of Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn) compounds is established with the help of the computed stiffness constants (Cij). The possible reason for enhanced mechanical properties and Vickers hardness of Hf2SnB2 is explained based on the analysis of bonding strength, followed by the electronic density of states. Higher mechanical strength and Vickers hardness of Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn) compared to Hf2AC (A = In, Sn) are also indicated in the light of charge density mapping. The values of Pugh ratio, Poissons ratio and Cauchy pressure predict brittle character of the studied compounds. Besides, the anisotropic nature of the titled borides is investigated by 2D and 3D plots of elastic moduli along with some well established anisotropy indices. Thermal properties were investigated by calculating the Debye temperature, minimum thermal conductivity, Grüneisen parameter, and melting temperature. The thermal properties of Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn) are also superior to Hf2AC (A = In, Sn). The optical constants such as real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, photoconductivity, reflectivity, and loss function are investigated.

Abstract:The lattice vibrations, elastic anisotropy, electronic properties and stress-strain behavior of HfxSiy phases were predicted using a first-principles calculations. The enthalpies of formation and lattice vibration frequencies of HfxSiy confirmed that they are phase-stable. The results of the elastic hardness show that they are elastically anisotropic. The order of anisotropy is Hf3Si2 > HfSi > Hf2Si > HfSi2 > Hf5Si3 > Hf5Si4. HfSi2 has a maximum hardness value of 19.7 GPa and is less than 20 GPa, indicating that it is not a potential superhard material. The results of stress-strain stretching increase with stretching and start a decreasing trend after the stress value reaches its highest point. Finally, we predicted sound velocity and Debye temperature.

Abstract:Hf–Al intermetallics are novel promising high-temperature structural materials, which exhibit excellent mechanical properties. In this work, the structural parameters, elastic constants, and mechanical anisotropies of Hf–Al intermetallics are investigated by applying the latest meta-GGA functional SCAN as well as several other widely used density functionals such as LDA, PBE and PBEsol. It is found that HfAl2 is the most thermodynamically stable stoichiometric compound among all Hf–Al binary intermetallics. The elastic moduli like B, G, E, ductility index (B/G ratio) and Poisson's ratio (σ) of Hf–Al intermetallics are predicted based on Voigt–Reuss–Hill approximation, indicating most Hf–Al binary intermetallics are brittle except Hf5Al3 and Hf2Al. Besides, the three-dimensional (3D) contour plots of mechanical moduli are provided to characterize the elastic anisotropy in Hf–Al intermetallics. HfAl shows obvious anisotropy in both Young's and bulk moduli along different crystallographic directions, while very weak anisotropy is revealed for both HfAl2 and Hf4Al3 phases since the 3-D surface contours of mechanical moduli show little deviations from isotropic spherical shapes. The calculated electronic properties indicate that relatively high thermodynamic stability of HfAl2 phase is mainly ascribed to the formation of a pseudo-gap in the electron density of states originating mainly from the Al-2p and Hf-5d states at the Fermi level.

Abstract:The morphology, composition, and structure of precipitates in an Al-Si-Mg-Hf alloy after heat treatment at 560 degrees C for 20 h were studied by means of C-s-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and first-principle calculations. Precipitates with three kinds of morphologies were observed. The rectangular and square precipitates were predominantly (Si2-xAlx)Hf phases, while the nanobelt-like precipitate is the Si2Hf phase. First-principle calculations were used to show that the Si6 and Si8 sites were the most favorable sites for Al incorporation in the orthorhombic Si2Hf phase.

Abstract:The formability, electronic structures, Debye temperatures and mechanical properties of TiVCrTa multi-component alloys with different crystal structures are investigated with first principles methods based on plane-wave pseudopotential theory. Results show that the three structures exhibit ductility. The C15 structure (Ti 41 Cr 25 Ta 12 V 22 ) is highly stable and has strong compressibility resistance along the X-axis. And the generation of the C15 structure increase the B value, and thus improves the deformation resistance of the material. The BCC 2 structure (Ti 27 Cr 27 Ta 18 V 28 ) partially improves the wear resistance of the material. The BCC 1 structure (Ti 23 Cr 25 Ta 23 V 29 ) has strong elastic anisotropy. The largest E value of the two BCC structures is observed in the [111] direction, and the lowest in the [100] direction. The opposite is observed in the C15 structure. The BCC 2 structure has a strong covalent bond and thermodynamic stability. The C15 structure has the strongest electron interaction and best atomic bonding and most obvious metallic bonding characteristics.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically calculated the thermoelectric and electronic properties of HfCoX (X = As, Sb, Bi) half-Heusler compounds. We found that for n-type HfCoAs and HfCoBi compounds at 1200 K, the dimensionless figure of merits can reach 1.74 and 1.49, respectively. These calculation results show that HfCoAs and HfCoBi compounds may have the potential to become the new high-temperature thermoelectric materials with excellent performance. HfCoX (X = As, Sb, Bi) compounds obey Born-Huang stability criteria and are dynamically and mechanically stable, brittle and anisotropic in mechanical properties. At 1200 K, due to the strong phonon-phonon interaction, the lattice thermal conductivities of HfCoAs and HfCoBi compounds are 8.08 W/mK and 4.97 W/mK, respectively. The lattice thermal conductivities of HfCoAs and HfCoSb compounds have similar values. The effective mass of HfCoAs conduction band is only 0.89 me, resulting in high relaxation time and carrier mobility.

Abstract:This work uses first-principles calculations to investigate the phase stability, thermophysical and mechanical properties of refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) at finite temperatures. Based on plane wave quasi-potential and density functional theory, construct the structure model of a solid solution. The TiMoNbX (X = Cr, Ta, Cr and Ta) RHEAs have been determined to preserve a single BCC solid solution structure by calculations, and the equilibrium lattice parameters and elastic modulus are consistent with experimental data obtained by laser cladding, which is combined with TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) substrate. Using the quasi-harmonic Debye-Grüneisen model, the thermophysical characteristics of three RHEAs are investigated. The Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) scheme is used for calculating Young's modulus (E), bulk modulus (B), shear modulus (G), and Poisson's ratio (ν), which indicates that all three RHEAs are ductile materials. Additionally, the calculation results indicate the modulus and hardness of TiMoNbX RHEAs decrease as temperature rises. Comparing with experimental results, the nanoindentation hardness values at 300 K are higher than the calculated values. It can be attributed that the coating was strengthened by Laves phases and dislocation interaction.
