Abstract:An electronic lab notebook (ELN) is a software tool for documenting laboratory experiments, research data, and processes. ELNs are set to replace paper lab notebooks as part of the ongoing digital transformation [1]. ELNs offer many benefits over physical lab notebooks. First, ELNs are connected to a networked digital environment [2] through their import and export functions and seamless interfaces to other programmes. ELNs can therefore play a central role in an institution's Research Data Management (RDM) strategy (see definition in S1 Text). Second, ELNs enable researchers to collaborate [3], whether within their own group or with others, through a common medium. Third, ELNs make an important contribution to Good Research Practice (GRP) [4] by facilitating the tracking, tracing, and documentation of research processes and results through time. ELNs also prevent data loss and guarantee data security. Finally, ELNs support the FAIR data principles [5], for example, through the assignment of metadata, tags, and persistent identifiers (PIDs). In order to successfully implement an ELN in your institution, we recommend that you involve staff from different areas (i.e., researchers, professors, lab managers and assistants, IT experts, librarians, and staff council (see definition in S1 Text)) at all stages of product selection and evaluation to achieve the greatest possible consensus. The following 10 rules offer guidance on implementing an ELN in your institution, bearing in mind that each institution may require a solution tailored to its specific needs. We also discuss the benefits of open-source ELNs and the importance of standardisation.

Abstract:Electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) will probably replace paper laboratory notebooks (PLNs) in academic research due to their advantages in data recording, sharing and security. Despite several reports describing technical characteristics of ELNs and their advantages over PLNs, no study has directly tested ELN performance among researchers. In addition, the usage of tablet-based devices or wearable technology as ELN complements has never been explored in the field. To implement an ELN in our biomedical research institute, here we first present a technical comparison of six ELNs using 42 parameters. Based on this, we chose two ELNs, which were tested by 28 scientists for a 3-month period and by 80 students via hands-on practical exercises. Second, we provide two survey-based studies aimed to compare these two ELNs (PerkinElmer Elements and Microsoft OneNote) and to analyze the use of tablet-based devices. We finally explore the advantages of using wearable technology as ELNs tools. Among the ELNs tested, we found that OneNote presents almost all parameters evaluated (39/42) and both surveyed groups preferred OneNote as an ELN solution. In addition, 80% of the surveyed scientists reported that tablet-based devices improved the use of ELNs in different respects. We also describe the advantages of using OneNote application for Apple Watch as an ELN wearable complement. This work defines essential features of ELNs that could be used to improve ELN implementation and software development.

Abstract:Proper experimental record-keeping is an important cornerstone in research and development for the purpose of auditing. The gold standard of record-keeping is based on the judicious use of physical, permanent notebooks. However, advances in technology had resulted in large amounts of electronic records making it virtually impossible to maintain a full set of records in physical notebooks. Electronic laboratory notebook systems aim to meet the stringency for keeping records electronically. This manuscript describes CyNote which is an electronic laboratory notebook system that is compliant with 21 CFP Part 11 controls on electronic records, requirements set by USA Food and Drug Administration for electronic records. CyNote is implemented on web2py framework and is adhering to the architectural paradigm of model-view-controller (MVC), allowing for extension modules to be built for CyNote. Abstract:This article describes an Internet based laboratory (NETLAB) developed at Zhejiang University for electrical engineering education. A key feature of the project is the use of real experimental systems rather than simulation or virtual reality. NELTAB provides remote access to a wide variety of experiments, including not only basic electrical and electronic experiments but also many innovative control experiments. Students can effectively use the laboratory at any time and from anywhere. NETLAB has been in operation since July 2003.

Abstract:The digitalization of processes in experimental laboratories often encounters obstacles with devices that lack connectivity with other systems. We propose a method to record and use values from such devices, demonstrating its effectiveness for weighing processes conducted using laboratory balances. Our developments include a mobile application (app) that records digital values, performs image recognition and integrates with the functionality of an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN). Our method can be factored into essential laboratory workflows, adapted for different steps involved when using balances and is, thus, applicable for various use cases. The app and the ELN facilitate a fully digital process: from planning a weighing procedure to documenting the results digitally. The procedure offers significant advantages: automation, reducing chances of mix-ups and errors, enhancing transparency, and making the processes verifiable because the image of reading from the laboratory balance is stored in addition to the digitized results.

Interactive Lab Notebooks for Robotics Researchers

Abstract:Interactive notebooks, such as Jupyter, have revolutionized the field of data science by providing an integrated environment for data, code, and documentation. However, their adoption by robotics researchers and model developers has been limited. This study investigates the logging and record-keeping practices of robotics researchers, drawing parallels to the pre-interactive notebook era of data science. Through interviews with robotics researchers, we identified the reliance on diverse and often incompatible tools for managing experimental data, leading to challenges in reproducibility and data traceability. Our findings reveal that robotics researchers can benefit from a specialized version of interactive notebooks that supports comprehensive data entry, continuous context capture, and agile data staging. We propose extending interactive notebooks to better serve the needs of robotics researchers by integrating features akin to traditional lab notebooks. This adaptation aims to enhance the organization, analysis, and reproducibility of experimental data in robotics, fostering a more streamlined and efficient research workflow.

Abstract:In experimental physics, lab notebooks play an essential role in the research process. For all of the ubiquity of lab notebooks, little formal attention has been paid to addressing what is considered “best practice” for scientific documentation and how researchers come to learn these practices in experimental physics. Using interviews with practicing researchers, namely, physics graduate students, we explore the different experiences researchers had in learning how to effectively use a notebook for scientific documentation. We find that very few of those interviewed thought that their undergraduate lab classes successfully taught them the benefit of maintaining a lab notebook. Most described training in lab notebook use as either ineffective or outright missing from their undergraduate lab course experience. Furthermore, a large majority of those interviewed explained that they did not receive any formal training in maintaining a lab notebook during their graduate school experience and received little to no feedback from their advisors on these records. Many of the interviewees describe learning the purpose of, and how to maintain, these kinds of lab records only after having a period of trial and error, having already started doing research in their graduate program. Despite the central role of scientific documentation in the research enterprise, these physics graduate students did not gain skills in documentation through formal instruction, but rather through informal hands-on practice.

Abstract:AI4Green is an open-source, machine-learning-powered electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) developed by our research group to help chemists mitigate environmental impacts, particularly within the pharmaceutical sector. This study presents AI4Green4Students, a pedagogically adapted version designed to foster sustainable laboratory practices and encourage the use of digital tools within undergraduate laboratory teaching. The AI4Green4Students ELN includes features for sustainability assessment, data documentation, and analysis, aiming to equip students with skills for modern, sustainable laboratory practices. User feedback, gathered through questionnaires and interviews, informed the initial development and subsequent refinements of the application, enhancing its usability, efficiency, and functionality. Implementation in a Year 3 undergraduate chemistry lab project indicated improved adherence to sustainable practices, suggesting that the ELN supports the integration of sustainable chemistry into laboratory teaching. Future efforts will expand AI4Green4Students to include additional experiments to broaden its applicability across undergraduate chemistry courses, as well as integrate machine learning tools to enhance data analysis capabilities.

Abstract:The development of an electronic lab notebook (ELN) for researchers working in the field of chemical sciences is presented. The web based application is available as an Open Source software that offers modern solutions for chemical researchers. The Chemotion ELN is equipped with the basic functionalities necessary for the acquisition and processing of chemical data, in particular the work with molecular structures and calculations based on molecular properties. The ELN supports planning, description, storage, and management for the routine work of organic chemists. It also provides tools for communicating and sharing the recorded research data among colleagues. Meeting the requirements of a state of the art research infrastructure, the ELN allows the search for molecules and reactions not only within the user’s data but also in conventional external sources as provided by SciFinder and PubChem. The presented development makes allowance for the growing dependency of scientific activity on the availability of digital information by providing Open Source instruments to record and reuse research data. The current version of the ELN has been using for over half of a year in our chemistry research group, serves as a common infrastructure for chemistry research and enables chemistry researchers to build their own databases of digital information as a prerequisite for the detailed, systematic investigation and evaluation of chemical reactions and mechanisms.

Abstract:Experimentation plays a crucial role in enhancing students skills. This article discusses current issues in engineering education while also exploring their potential solutions, and it focuses on the integration of online learning into routine teaching, especially online laboratories that flip conventional laboratories. The current online laboratories and corresponding issues are also discussed in detail. Three case studies with the Networked Control System Laboratory (NCSLab), which is an industrial laboratory that mainly focuses on control and automation, are presented to provide detailed examples of how online laboratories can help teaching and learning. Future perspectives on online laboratories toward future experimentation systems are outlined with the possibility of integrating cutting-edge and emerging technologies to enable flexibility, high maintainability, and intelligence for cross-disciplinary/interdisciplinary applications.

Abstract:Our world is changing fast. On one hand, technological developments provide us with new and powerful electronics devices on almost a weekly basis. On the other hand, the end-user of these electronics is now rarely required to actually configure the devices, as everything is automated. This "de-empowerment" of the end-user may be detrimental to the scientific community. This is because the unique conditions in which a scientific measurement is performed require the end-user to have unrestricted access to every variable of the experimental setup. In this compendium, a general overview of some popular electronic modules is presented, and the different characteristics the end- user should take into consideration when buying/designing electronics systems for a new experimental application are discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemical biosensors ("E-AB" or "E-DNA" type sensors) that utilize square-wave voltammetry originated in academic labs with a few standard experimental configurations for the electrochemical cell and data analysis. We report here on adaptations of these approaches that are friendly to novice scientists such as those in undergraduate laboratories. These approaches utilize commercially available components, low volumes, work over extended periods and enable facile analysis using a custom excel sheet.

Abstract:This article presents the findings of a pilot study introducing students to emerging educational technologies to enhance their physics laboratory learning experiences. This follows a design-based laboratory approach in which the students move from constructing and developing their laboratory reports in a traditional cookbook pen-and-paper method towards design-based labs using cloud applications.Google Docs and Sheets, in conjunction with educational add-ons, Doctopus and Goobrics, were introduced to students within an Extended Curriculum Program (ECP) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa, so they could write their physics laboratory report, receive feedback, and view the embedded rubric solely online.= 49 students from a first-year ECP in physics at a South African university voluntarily participated in this study.Survey data were gathered through two non-standardized questionnaires, using both open-ended and closed questions, via Google Forms. The paper is framed in relation to three main research questions focusing on digital literacy and expectations, learning and engagement, and perceptions. Google Sheets was the database used for the surveys, in conjunction with Goobrics and Doctopus.The research questions, particularly around learning and engagement, suggest that although challenges remain (as depicted in student perceptions and feedback), there is a clear benefit to introducing digital lab reports, through a scaffolded pathway.The use of the tools emphasises the idea that cloud technology and educational add-ons are not a magic bullet. We also discuss the role of an Academic Developer as a mediator. Moreover, we argue that educational technologies have a critical role to play in fostering and promoting the acquisition of scientific Discourse, but it must never be forgotten that the tools are not an end in themselves, but a means to an end – promoting student learning and preparing the next generation of scientists and scholars, and that serious challenges remain.

Effects of Reducing Scaffolding in an Undergraduate Electronics Lab

Abstract:Design and scientific investigation are recognized as key components of undergraduate physics laboratory curricula. In light of this, many successful lab programs have been developed to train students to develop these abilities, and students in these programs have been shown to exhibit a higher transfer rate of scientific abilities to new situations. In this paper, I use data from an electronics class for physics majors to investigate how giving students the opportunity to design circuits --- by removing steps from traditional cookbook lab guides --- affects the students' ability to determine the function of circuits they haven't seen before. I compared post-lab quiz results from students who were given explicit procedures to those of students who were given incomplete procedures, and I found no statistically significant difference in the results of the two groups. I explore possible explanations for the null effect and recommend future research directions.

Abstract:Encouraging student engagement is a key aim in any educational setting, and allowing students the freedom to pursue their own methods of solving problems through independent experimentation has been shown to markedly improve this. In many contexts, however, allowing students this flexibility in their learning is hampered by constraints of the material itself, such as in the electronics laboratory, where expensive and bulky equipment confines the learning environment to the laboratory room. Finding ourselves in the position of teaching one such laboratory course at the undergraduate level, we sought to encourage students to learn through independent investigation and the pursuit of personal projects, by providing a more flexible and inquiry-based learning environment and allowing them to take their measurement equipment -- and their learning -- beyond the laboratory itself. We present this project as a case of design both for and by students, with the lead designer undertaking the project after attending the course in question, and pursuing its development as a foundational step in their graduate career. We discuss the challenges and opportunities we encountered over the course of the design and development process, and the eventual key output of the project: a portable, low-cost, integrated electronics experimentation platform called the Winterlab board.

Automation in the Life Science Research Laboratory

Abstract:Protocols in the academic life science laboratory are heavily reliant on the manual manipulation of tools, reagents and instruments by a host of research staff and students. In contrast to industrial and clinical laboratory environments, the usage of automation to augment or replace manual tasks is limited. Causes of this 'automation gap' are unique to academic research, with rigid short-term funding structures, high levels of protocol variability and a benevolent culture of investment in people over equipment. Automation, however, can bestow multiple benefits through improvements in reproducibility, researcher efficiency, clinical translation, and safety. Less immediately obvious are the accompanying limitations, including obsolescence and an inhibitory effect on the freedom to innovate. Growing the range of automation options suitable for research laboratories will require more flexible, modular and cheaper designs. Academic and commercial developers of automation will increasingly need to design with an environmental awareness and an understanding that large high-tech robotic solutions may not be appropriate for laboratories with constrained financial and spatial resources. To fully exploit the potential of laboratory automation, future generations of scientists will require both engineering and biology skills. Automation in the research laboratory is likely to be an increasingly critical component of future research programs and will continue the trend of combining engineering and science expertise together to answer novel research questions.

Abstract:Laboratory research is a complex, collaborative process that involves several stages, including hypothesis formulation, experimental design, data generation and analysis, and manuscript writing. Although reproducibility and data sharing are increasingly prioritized at the publication stage, integrating these principles at earlier stages of laboratory research has been hampered by the lack of broadly applicable solutions. Here, we propose that the workflow used in modern software development offers a robust framework for enhancing reproducibility and collaboration in laboratory research. In particular, we show that GitHub, a platform widely used for collaborative software projects, can be effectively adapted to organize and document all aspects of a research project's lifecycle in a molecular biology laboratory. We outline a three-step approach for incorporating the GitHub ecosystem into laboratory research workflows: 1. designing and organizing experiments using issues and project boards, 2. documenting experiments and data analyses with a version control system, and 3. ensuring reproducible software environments for data analyses and writing tasks with containerized packages. The versatility, scalability, and affordability of this approach make it suitable for various scenarios, ranging from small research groups to large, cross-institutional collaborations. Adopting this framework from a project's outset can increase the efficiency and fidelity of knowledge transfer within and across research laboratories.
