Abstract:In this talk I review the current status of the CKM matrix. A special emphasis is also given to several discrepancies between experiments and the standard model at the level of about three standard deviations. Recent results that appeared after FPCP2011 are also included in the discussion.

Abstract:In Standard Model, CP violation arises from an irreducible complex phase in the quark mixing matrix, now under the name Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix. This description has shown remarkable overall agreement with various experimental measurements. In this review, we discuss recent experimental data and theoretical developments on three quantities of CKM matrix that are most uncertain: the Vub, including its magnitude and the phase γ in standard parametrization, and the [Formula: see text] mixing phase βs.

Abstract:We review the status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and the CP-violating phases in the CKM-unitarity triangle. The emphasis in these lecture notes is on $B$-meson physics, though we also review the current status and issues in the light quark sector of this matrix. Selected applications of theoretical methods in QCD used in the interpretation of data are given and some of the issues restricting theoretical precision on the CKM matrix elements discussed. The overall consistency of the CKM theory with the available data in flavour physics is impressive and we quantify this consistency. Current data also show some anomalies which, however, are not yet statistically significant. They are discussed briefly. Some benchmark measurements that remain to be done in experiments at the $B$-factories and hadron colliders are listed. Together with the already achieved results, they will provide unprecedented tests of the CKM theory and by the same token may lead to the discovery of new physics.

Abstract:We discuss the problem of theoretical uncertainties in the combination of observables related to the CKM matrix elements and propose a statistically sensible method for combining them. The overall fit is performed on present data, and constraints on the matrix elements are presented as well as on fB*sqrt(Bb). We then explore the implications of recent measurements and developments: jpsi-KS CP asymmetry, epsilon_prime/epsilon and B -> K pi branching fractions. Finally, we extract from the overall fit the Standard Model expectations for the rare kaon decays K -> pi nu anti-nu.

Abstract:Abstract. We report on a new approach to a global CKM matrix analysis taking into account most recent experimental and theoretical results. The statistical framework (Rfit) developed in this paper advocates frequentist statistics. Other approaches, such as Bayesian statistics or the 95% CL scan method are also discussed. We emphasize the distinction of a model testing and a model dependent, metrological phase in which the various parameters of the theory are estimated. Measurements and theoretical parameters entering the global fit are thoroughly discussed, in particular with respect to their theoretical uncertainties. Graphical results for confidence levels are drawn in various one and two-dimensional parameter spaces. Numerical results are provided for all relevant CKM parameterizations, the CKM elements and theoretical input parameters. Predictions for branching ratios of rare K and B meson decays are obtained. A simple, predictive SUSY extension of the Standard Model is discussed.

Abstract:This letter summarises the status of the global fit of the CKM parameters within the Standard Model performed by the CKMfitter group. Special attention is paid to the inputs for the CKM angles $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ and the status of $B_s\to\mu\mu$ and $B_d\to \mu\mu$ decays. We illustrate the current situation for other unitarity triangles. We also discuss the constraints on generic $\Delta F=2$ New Physics. All results have been obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using Rfit to handle theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract:During the last few years, new experimental and theoretical results have allowed ever more stringent tests of the Standard Model to be performed using kaon decays. This overview of recent progress includes an updated evaluation of the CKM matrix element Vus. Abstract:The hierarchy amongst the CKM matrix elements, highlighted recently by Luo and Xing, has been rigorously revisited using the PDG parameterization incorporating unitarity constraints. Further, we have explored the evaluation of the CP violating parameter \epsilon_k for the 9 possible unitarity ensured equivalent independent parametrizations of CKM matrix. Interestingly, we find that not all of these reproduce the value of parameter \epsilon_k, this being presumably due to the hierarchical nature of the CKM matrix elements. This situation is echoing similar conclusions regarding the evaluation of Jarlskog's rephasing invariant parameter J through unitarity ensured equivalent possibilities.

Abstract:Lattice QCD plays an essential role in testing and determining the parameters of the CKM theory of flavor mixing and CP violation. Very high precisions are required for lattice calculations analysing CKM data; I discuss the prospects for achieving them. Lattice calculations will also play a role in investigating flavor mixing and CP violation beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:A small upper-bound is obtained for the CP phase $\delta$ in a CKM matrix, $|\sin\delta| \le 0.44$ based on CP independent data on $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ alone. Potential inconsistencies with the CKM model in existing data which need a theory beyond the standard model to overcome emerge in the analysis using this CKM matrix. In addition, all CP asymmetry measurables for the $B_d- \bar B_d$ system are expressed solely by the CP phases in the decay amplitudes. Remarkably the CP asymmetry of the bench mark process $B_d\to \psi K_S$ equals sin$2\delta$. This will soon be measured by BaBar and Belle to confront the above upper-bound.

Kaon Theory: 50 Years Later

Abstract:We summarize the status of the Kaon Theory 50 years after the seminal paper of Kobayashi and Maskawa who pointed out that six quarks are necessary to have CP violation in the Standard Model (SM) and presented a parametrization of a $3\times 3$ unitary matrix that after the discovery of the charm quark in 1974 and the $b$ quark in 1977 dominated the field of flavour changing processes. One of the main goals of flavour physics since then was the determination of the four parameters of this matrix, which we will choose here to be $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and the two angles of the unitarity triangle, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ with $|V_{us}|$ introduced by Cabibbo in 1963. I will summarize recent strategy for determination of these parameters without new physics (NP) infection. It is based on the conjecture of the absence of relevant NP contributions to $\Delta F=2$ processes that indeed can be demonstrated by a negative rapid test: the $|V_{cb}|-\gamma$ plot. This in turn allows to obtain SM predictions for rare $K$ and $B$ decays that are most precise to date. We present strategies for the explanation of the anticipated anomaly in the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and the observed anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions that are consistent with our $\Delta F=2$ conjecture. In particular, the absence of NP in the parameter $\varepsilon_K$, still allows for significant NP effects in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and in rare Kaon decays, moreover in a correlated manner. Similar the absence of NP in $\Delta M_s$ combined with anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions hints for the presence of right-handed quark currents. We also discuss how the nature of neutrinos, Dirac vs. Majorana one, can be probed in $K\to\pi\nu\bar\nu$ and $B\to K(K^*)\nu\bar\nu$ decays. The present status of the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule and of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is summarized.

However, this model does not address the question that where it comes from. The origin of CP violation is still a mystery. Abstract:We present the Standard Model evaluation of the indirect CP violation parameter $\varepsilon_K$ using inputs determined from lattice QCD together with experiment: $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{cb}|$, $\xi_0$, and $\hat{B}_K$. We use the Wolfenstein parametrization ($|V_{cb}|$, $\lambda$, $\bar{\rho}$, $\bar{\eta}$) for the CKM matrix elements. For the central value, we take the angle-only fit of the UTfit collaboration, and use $|V_{us}|$ from the $K_{\ell 3}$ and $K_{\mu 2}$ decays as an independent input to fix $\lambda$. For the error estimate, we use results of the global unitarity triangle fits from the CKMfitter and UTfit collaborations. We find that the Standard Model (SM) prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ with exclusive $V_{cb}$ (lattice QCD results) is lower than the experimental value by $3.6(2)\sigma$. However, with inclusive $V_{cb}$ (results of the heavy quark expansion), the tension between the SM prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ and its experimental value disappears.

Abstract:The combination of precise experimental measurements and theoretical predictions allows to extract Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements or constrain flavor changing processes in the standard model. Focusing at theoretical predictions, we review recent highlights from the sector of heavy charm and bottom quark decays. Special emphasis is given to nonperturbative contributions due to the strong force calculated using lattice QCD.

Experimental status of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$

Abstract:The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ are essential to test the unitary of CKM matrix. Before 2014, many results of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ had been reported at BaBar, Belle, and CLEO experiments. The precisions of the most accurate results of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ are 4.4\% and 3.3\%, respectively. After that, benefitting from larger data samples collected at BESIII, the precisions of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ are improved to 1.8\% and 0.9\%, respectively.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.
