Abstract:Plants produce many biologically active chemical compounds that inhibit the growth of other plants. Such biologically activite chemical compounds in plants has been used as a tool for weed management and as lead compounds for the development of herbicides with new modes of action. Recent development of the maize herbicide Mesotrione(R)[2-(4-mesyl-2-nitrobenzoyl) cyclohexane-1,3-dione] whose chemical structure is based on leptospermone in bottlebrush plants (Callistemon citrinus Stapf.) has sparked the search for new herbicidally active compounds in plants. In Korea, more than six thousand native plants have been found to grow in nature, however, only a few of them have been investigated for herbicidal activity. In this review, known herbicidally activite chemical compounds from native plants in Korea are introduced. Such herbicidally activite chemical compounds could be used for weed management and the development of herbicides with new modes of action
