Abstract:Weeds are a serious threat to crop production, and the utilization of secondary metabolites of phytopathogenic fungi is considered to be an effective method of weed control. In this study, eight compounds were isolated and purified from the mycelium and fermentation broth extracts of Bipolaris cookei SYBL03. The compounds (1−8), except 2 and 6, are reported for the first time from this genus. The herbicidal activities of compounds 1−8 were studied by evaluating their effects on the seed germination and seedling growth of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds. The results indicated that compound 7 (Cyclo-N-methylphenylalanyltryptophenyl, cNMPT) exhibited a concentration-dependent dual effect on the growth of weed seedlings and selective herbicidal activity against dicotyledonous weeds. We further investigated the morphological and physiological responses of roots of Amaranthus retroflexus, a dicotyledonous weed, to compound 7. Some changes were found in seedlings grown in 400 μg/mL compound 7 solution for 96 h, such as shortening and swelling of elongation zone cells, reduced number and length of root hairs, damage and wrinkling of the root surface, occurrence of electrolyte leakage, and an increase in ethylene content. These results suggest that compound 7 may exert herbicidal activity by causing stress to weed seedlings. Increased ethylene production could be involved in the response of plants to compound 7.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the selective herbicidal activity of secondary metabolites isolated from the plant - pathogenic fungus Bipolaris cookei SYBL03 against weeds and their mechanisms of action. Specifically, the researchers hope: 1. **Discover new compounds with herbicidal activity**: By isolating and purifying compounds from the mycelium and fermentation broth extracts of Bipolaris cookei SYBL03, look for new compounds that may have selective herbicidal activity. 2. **Evaluate the herbicidal activity of these compounds**: By testing the effects of these compounds on the seed germination and seedling growth of different types of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds, evaluate their potential herbicidal effects. 3. **Explore the mechanism of action of compound 7 (cyclo - N - methylphenylalanyltryptophenyl, cNMPT)**: Pay special attention to the morphological and physiological effects of compound 7 on the roots of the dicotyledonous weed Amaranthus retroflexus to understand the specific mechanism of its herbicidal action. ### Main findings: - **Selective herbicidal activity of compound 7**: Compound 7 shows a significant selective inhibitory effect on dicotyledonous weeds, while it shows a growth - promoting effect on monocotyledonous weeds. - **Concentration - dependent dual effects**: Compound 7 promotes growth at low concentrations, inhibits growth at high concentrations, and completely inhibits growth at extremely high concentrations. - **Morphological and physiological effects on roots**: Compound 7 shortens and swells the root cells of A. retroflexus, reduces the number and length of root hairs, and causes electrolyte leakage and an increase in ethylene content, indicating that the plant is under drug stress. ### Significance: This study not only discovered new compounds with potential herbicidal activity, but also deeply explored their mechanisms of action, providing new ideas for the development of environmentally - friendly natural herbicides. In particular, the selective herbicidal activity and concentration - dependent dual effects of compound 7 make it the focus of future research.
