Abstract:Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) have the excellent comprehensive properties and have widespread applications in lubrication, sealing, vibration reduction and wastewater treatment. When MRFs are used to recover oil from water, the Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MPs) in MRF are coated by a surfactant which has good hydrophobic and oleophilic properties. After the surfactant fully adsorbs the oil in wastewater, the oil together with MPs can be moved by a magnet. To effectively recycle the oil slick, a magnetorheological fluid was prepared in this work. A core-shell material of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MPs) coated by oleic acid (OA) was evenly dispersed in a base fluid. The Fe3O4 MPs was prepared by using the chemical precipitation method and the OA was used to improve the oleophilic and hydrophobic performances of MPs. The structure of Fe3O4 MPs was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that nanoparticles have good coating effect of OA and the measured water contact angles after different separation cycles remains at 138 degrees, which means nanoparticles still have good oleophilic and hydrophobic performances. The oil-removal experiments using the MRF were conducted. The mixture of MRF and oil slick floating on water was extracted. After the centrifugal separation and ultrasonic oscillation treatments, the oil and wet precipitate were separated. By mixing the wet precipitate with base fluid, the regenerated MRF is used to recover the oil slick again to investigate the reusability of the MRF. The results indicate that more than 90 % oils slick can be recovered using the prepared MRF and its oil-removal performed well according to the three-times experiments. It is shown that the prepared Fe3O4@OA MRF has a broad prospect in surface oil slick treatment.
