Abstract:Enhancing the light-matter interaction with high-Q bound states in the continuum has aroused great interest. In our paper, we present an all-dielectric metasurfaces in the realm of nonlinear optics, by harnessing the power of dual quasi-bound states in the continuum and surface lattice resonance to enhance second-harmonic generation on lithium niobate metasurfaces. It is demonstrated that the strong enhancement in conversion efficiency is up to 10,000 times of a lithium niobate film with equivalent thickness and approximately 100 times greater than that observed for bound states in the continuum within a wide spectral range in near-infrared band. The dynamic process of the modes was demonstrated by the multipole scattering theory. This breakthrough offers straightforward design principles for harmonic generation utilizing metasurfaces, which is highly advantageous for a range of applications, including efficient nonlinear optics, sensitive biosensing, and the generation of laser sources across the ultraviolet-visible spectrum.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) is a material that has drawn great interest in nonlinear optics because of its large nonlinear susceptibility and wide transparency window. However, for complex nonlinear processes such as high-harmonic generation (HHG), which involves frequency conversion over a wide frequency range, it can be extremely challenging for a bulk LiNbO3 crystal to fulfill the phase-matching conditions. LiNbO3 metasurfaces with resonantly enhanced nonlinear light-matter interaction at the nanoscale may circumvent such an issue. Here, we experimentally demonstrate efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) and HHG from a LiNbO3 metasurface enhanced by guided-mode resonance. We observe a high normalized SHG efficiency of 5.1 × 10-5 cm2 GW-1. Moreover, with the alleviated above-gap absorption of the material, we demonstrate HHG up to the 7th order with the shortest generated wavelength of 226 nm. This work may provide a pathway towards compact coherent white-light sources with frequency spanning into the deep ultraviolet region for applications in spectroscopy and imaging.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. Lithium niobate (LN), which features both a large band gap and outstanding second-order nonlinearities, acts as an important optical material for nonlinear frequency conversion covering a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Here we experimentally demonstrate LN metasurfaces with controllable SHG properties. Distinct enhancements for the SHG efficiency are observed at Mie-resonances. And by changing the geometric parameters thus the resonances of the metasurfaces, we manage to selectively boost the SHG efficiency at different wavelengths. Our results would pave a way for developing with high flexibility the novel compact nonlinear light sources for applications, such as biosensing and optical communications.

Abstract:Second-order nonlinear metasurfaces have proven their ability to efficiently convert the frequency of incident signals over subwavelength thickness. However, the availability of second-order nonlinear materials for such metasurfaces has so far been limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible and impose constraints on the excitation geometries due to the lack of diagonal second-order susceptibility components. Here we propose a new design concept for second-order nonlinear metasurfaces on a monolithic substrate, which is not limited by the availability of thin crystalline films and can be applied to any non-centrosymmetric material. We exemplify this concept in a monolithic Lithium Niobate metasurface with cylinder-shaped corrugations for enhanced field confinement. By optimizing the geometrical parameters, we show enhanced second harmonic generation from a near-infrared pump beam with conversion efficiency above 10-5 using 1 GW/cm2 pump intensity. Our approach enables new opportunities for practical designs of generic metasurfaces for nonlinear and quantum light sources.

Abstract:Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold rotation-symmetrical crystalline structure induces strong nonlinear spin-orbital coupling, which enables simultaneous control of spatial phase and polarization in second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear transition-metal dichalcogenide metasurface proposed is promising for on-chip integration of nonlinear generation of structured light.
Highly-efficient second and third harmonic generation in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microresonator.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes in waveguides play important roles in compact integrated photonics, while efficient coupling and manipulations inside the waveguides still remain challenging. In this work, we propose a new scheme for second-harmonic generation as well as beam shaping in lithium niobate slab waveguides with the assistance of well-designed grating metasurfaces at λ = 1064 nm . By encoding the amplitude and phase into the holographic gratings, we further demonstrate strong functionalities of nonlinear beam shaping by the metasurface design, including dual focusing and Airy beam generation. Our approach would inspire new designs in the miniaturization and integration of compact multifunctional nonlinear light sources on chip.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics has generated a wide range of applications in the fields of optical communications, biomedicine, and materials science, with nonlinear conversion efficiency serving as a vital metric for its progress. However, the weak nonlinear response of materials, high optical loss, and inhomogeneous distribution of the light field hamper the improvement of the conversion efficiency. We present a composite grating waveguide structure integrated into a Bragg reflector platform. This design achieves high Q in the spectral range by exploiting the unique properties exhibited by the bound states in the Bloch surface wave-enhanced continuum, and efficient second-harmonic generation by close-field amplification with the optical field tightly localized in a nonlinear material. By manipulating the symmetry of the grating, a precise tune over the near field within a designated wavelength range can be achieved. Specifically, we select a photonic crystal configuration supporting surface waves, employing TE polarization conditions and an asymmetry factor of −0.1 between the composite gratings. This configuration resonates at a fundamental wavelength of 783.5 nm, exhibiting an impressive Q -factor of 10 6 . Notably, at an incident light intensity of 1.33 GW/cm 2 , we achieve a normalized electric field strength of up to 940 at the fundamental frequency and a second-harmonic conversion efficiency of up to 6 × 10 −3 , significantly amplifying the second-harmonic response. The proposed configuration in this investigation has the potential to be integrated into the field of nonlinear optics for sensing frequency conversion applications.

Abstract:The phase-matching condition is a key aspect in nonlinear wavelength conversion processes, which requires the momenta of the photons involved in the processes to be conserved. Conventionally, nonlinear phase matching is achieved using either birefringent or periodically poled nonlinear crystals, which requires careful dispersion engineering and are usually narrowband. In recent years, metasurfaces consisting of densely packed arrays of optical antennas have been demonstrated to provide an effective optical momentum to bend light in arbitrary ways. Here, we demonstrate that gradient metasurface structures consisting of phased array antennas are able to circumvent the phase-matching requirement in on-chip nonlinear wavelength conversion. We experimentally demonstrate phase-matching-free second harmonic generation over many coherent lengths in thin film lithium niobate waveguides patterned with the gradient metasurfaces. Efficient second-harmonic generation (1660% W-1cm-2) in the metasurface-based devices was observed over a wide range of pump wavelengths (1580-1650 nm).

Abstract:The lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) metasurface is an attractive platform for nonlinear frequency conversion due to its excellent nonlinearity, high damage threshold, and strong enhancement of the driving field. Here, we demonstrated the nonlinear metasurface for terahertz (THz) generation from LiNbO 3 on an insulator. The THz electric field from the LiNbO 3 metasurface of 300 nm thickness is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared to the unstructured sample. The enhanced terahertz electric field is very selective in the excitation wavelength due to its resonant feature and is highly anisotropic with respect to the excitation polarization. The polarization direction of the THz electric field can be controlled by rotating the optical axis of the LiNbO 3 metasurface. By combining the nanofabrication technology of the LiNbO 3 metasurface and ultrafast nonlinear optics, our work paves the way for the design of new compact terahertz photonic devices that integrate THz emitters into LiNbO 3 -based chips with multifaceted capabilities.

Abstract:Lithium niobate has received interest in nonlinear frequency conversion due to its wide transparency window, from ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral regions, and large second-order nonlinear susceptibility. However, its nanostructure is generally difficult to etch, resulting in low- Q resonance and lossy nanostructures for second harmonic generation. By applying the concept of bound states in the continuum, we performed theoretical and experimental investigations on high- Q resonant etchless thin-film lithium niobate with SiO 2 nanostructures on top for highly efficient second harmonic generation. In the fabricated nanostructured devices, a resonance with a Q factor of 980 leads to the strong enhancement of second harmonic generation by over 1500 times compared with that in unpatterned lithium niobate thin film. Although the pump slightly deviates from central resonance, an absolute conversion efficiency of 6.87×10 −7 can be achieved with the fundamental pump peak intensity of 44.65 MW/cm 2 , thus contributing to the normalized conversion efficiency of 1.54×10 −5 cm 2 /GW. Our work establishes an etchless lithium niobate device for various applications, such as integrated nonlinear nanophotonics, terahertz frequency generation, and quantum information processing.
High-Efficiency Second-Harmonic Generation Using Quasi-Bound State in LiNbO3 Metasurface

Abstract:We numerically demonstrated a high-efficiency second-harmonic generation (SHG) using quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi–BIC) in thin film LiNbO3 (TFLN) metasurface. The TFLN possessed exceptionally high second-order nonlinear coefficients, contributing to the enhanced SHG performance. An eccentric cylinder unit cell was presented to achieve high Q–factor resonances associated with the asymmetric parameter introduced. Simulations showed that the high efficiency of the second-harmonic conversion was obtained by using the high Q–factor of the asymmetric dielectric cylinder metasurface, and it achieved a high SHG efficiency of 6.5% at pump intensities as low as 1 MW/cm2 at a normal incident. Furthermore, the simulation results indicated that breaking the symmetry through oblique incidence was more effective in achieving a higher Q–factor compared to altering the structural parameters. Specifically, under 1° oblique incidences, the conversion efficiency could reach 1.2% at an incident power of 1 kW/cm2. We have proposed a method to achieve a high conversion efficiency of second-harmonic generation in low-refractive-index materials. Our work not only offers theoretical support but also provides valuable insights for the advancement of efficient nonlinear frequency doubling technology, optical communication, and sensing applications.

Boosted second-harmonic generation in the LiNbO$\mathrm{_3}$ metasurface governed by high-Q guided resonances and bound states in the continuum

Abstract:To date, second-harmonic generation (SHG) at nanoscale has been concentrated on employing high-refractive-index nanostructures, owing to the strong field confinement at deep subwavelength scales based on optically resonant effects. However, low-index nanostructures generally exhibit weaker resonant effects and lower field confinement. To address this issue, by harnessing the large nonlinearity of LiNbO$\mathrm{_3}$, we propose a novel approach to employ guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) with a LiNbO$\mathrm{_3}$ metasurface consisting of a LiNbO$\mathrm{_3}$ disk array sitting on a LiNbO3 thin film. Such a system can transform the guided modes supported by LiNbO$\mathrm{_3}$ thin film into high-quality guided resonances which can be excited directly under plane-wave illumination. Importantly, we further demonstrate strong field confinement inside LiNbO3 thin film with tailorable Q-factor by realising a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC. Such a unique mode engineering enables a record-high SHG efficiency of 5\% under a pump intensity as low as 0.4 $\mathrm{MW/cm^{2}}$. Moreover, we reveal the influence of nonlinear resonances and cross-coupling on the SHG by showing the anomalous SHG and efficiency tuning with the rotation of the crystal axis. Our work offers a new route to constructing enhanced SHG based on high-Q guided resonances and BICs, including low-index and high-index nonlinear materials.

Abstract:Boosting second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion over subwavelength thickness has long been pursued through optical resonance in micro- and nanophotonics. However, the availability of thin film materials with high second-order nonlinearity is limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible. Here, we experimentally demonstrated strongly enhanced second harmonic generation in one-dimensional heterostructure cavities on thin film lithium niobate. A guided-mode resonance resonator and distributed Bragg reflectors are combined for both efficient coupling and electromagnetic field localization. Over 1200 times second harmonic generation enhancement is experimentally realized compared with flat thin film lithium niobate through optimizing the trade-off between quality factor and mode volume, leading to a record high normalized conversion efficiency of 2.03 x 10(-5) cm(2)/GW under 1.92 MW/cm(2) pump intensity. Our approach could inspire the miniaturization and integration of compact resonant nonlinear photonic devices on thin film lithium niobate.
Tunable Second Harmonic Generation with Large Enhancement in A Nonlocal All‐Dielectric Metasurface Over A Broad Spectral Range

Abstract:In this work enhanced and spectrally tunable second‐harmonic generations (SHG) are reported by harnessing the quasi‐guided modes (QGM) in a period‐doubling nonlocal metasurface built on the lithium niobate film. The high robustness of the QGM Q factors at different wavevectors makes it possible to achieve such a tunability using a single metasuface structure. Recently, all‐dielectric metasurfaces are profoundly exploited to enhance light‐matter interactions, resulting from the high quality‐factor (Q‐factor) optical resonances that based on novel concepts such as the bound states in the continuum (BIC). Unfortunately, BIC operates at a fixed resonance wavelength and a fixed wavevector for a specific structure. Here, the experimental demonstration of a dielectric nonlocal metasurface capable of robustly maintaining high‐Q resonances is reported, over a broad spectral range, where the specific wavelength is selected by controlling the incident angle. This is enabled by steering infinite‐Q guided modes (GMs) in subwavelength lattices into quasi‐GMs (QGMs), which are accessible by external radiations while retaining the same dispersion as the GMs. Such invaluable characteristics are achieved by harnessing the period‐doubling perturbation, implemented in a nonlocal metasurface structure on top of a lithium niobate (LN) film. Furthermore, spectrally tunable second‐harmonic generations are demonstrated in this structure with an enhancement factor of ≈1200 compare to that of a bare LN film of the same thickness over a large bandwidth. These results suggest that the QGMs supported by all‐dielectric nonlocal metasurfaces provide an excellent platform for enhancing light‐matter interactions with additional desired functionalities of spectral tunability and random selection of the operation wavelength.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to the order of 0.01% at SH wavelength of 282 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump power via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d33 nonlinear coefficient is investigated. The anapole has advantages of strongly suppressing far-field scattering and well-confined internal field which helps to boost the nonlinear conversion. Anapoles in LN nanodisk is facilitated by high index contrast between LN and substrate with properties of near-zero-index via hyperbolic metamaterial structure design. By tailoring the multi-layers structure of hyperbolic metamaterials, the anapole excitation wavelength can be tuned at different wavelengths. It indicates that an enhanced SHG can be achieved at a wide range of pump light wavelengths via different design of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) hyperbolic metamaterials substrates. The proposed nanostructure in this work might hold significances for the enhanced light-matter interactions at the nanoscale such as integrated optics.
