Abstract:Nonlinear optics has generated a wide range of applications in the fields of optical communications, biomedicine, and materials science, with nonlinear conversion efficiency serving as a vital metric for its progress. However, the weak nonlinear response of materials, high optical loss, and inhomogeneous distribution of the light field hamper the improvement of the conversion efficiency. We present a composite grating waveguide structure integrated into a Bragg reflector platform. This design achieves high Q in the spectral range by exploiting the unique properties exhibited by the bound states in the Bloch surface wave-enhanced continuum, and efficient second-harmonic generation by close-field amplification with the optical field tightly localized in a nonlinear material. By manipulating the symmetry of the grating, a precise tune over the near field within a designated wavelength range can be achieved. Specifically, we select a photonic crystal configuration supporting surface waves, employing TE polarization conditions and an asymmetry factor of −0.1 between the composite gratings. This configuration resonates at a fundamental wavelength of 783.5 nm, exhibiting an impressive Q -factor of 10 6 . Notably, at an incident light intensity of 1.33 GW/cm 2 , we achieve a normalized electric field strength of up to 940 at the fundamental frequency and a second-harmonic conversion efficiency of up to 6 × 10 −3 , significantly amplifying the second-harmonic response. The proposed configuration in this investigation has the potential to be integrated into the field of nonlinear optics for sensing frequency conversion applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the conversion efficiency of second - harmonic generation (SHG). Specifically, the authors aim to enhance the SHG effect in lithium niobate (LN) thin films by combining Bloch surface waves (BSW) and quasi - bound states (quasi - BIC). The following are the key issues and solutions involved in the paper: 1. **Weak Nonlinear Response and High Optical Loss**: - Problems such as the weak nonlinear response of materials, high optical losses, and non - uniform light field distribution limit the improvement of nonlinear optical conversion efficiency. 2. **Proposed New Structure**: - The authors designed a composite grating waveguide structure and integrated it into a Bragg reflector platform. This design utilizes the quasi - bound - state characteristics enhanced by Bloch surface waves, thereby achieving efficient second - harmonic generation. - Formula representation: \[ \text{SHG Efficiency} = \frac{\text{Second Harmonic Intensity}}{\text{Fundamental Intensity}} \] 3. **Optimizing Structure Parameters**: - By adjusting the symmetry and periodicity of the grating, the near - field distribution can be precisely regulated within a specified wavelength range. For example, a photonic crystal configuration with TE polarization conditions and supporting surface waves was selected, and an asymmetry factor \(\delta\) was introduced. - Key formula: \[ k_{\text{BSW}} = -k_0 n_0 \sin \theta + \frac{2m\pi}{P} \] where \( k_{\text{BSW}} \) is the Bloch surface wave vector, \( k_0=\frac{2\pi}{\lambda} \) is the vacuum wave vector, \(\lambda\) is the wavelength of the incident light in vacuum, and \(\theta\) is the incident angle. 4. **Experimental Results**: - Under the condition of an incident light intensity of \( 1.33 \, \text{GW/cm}^2 \), a fundamental frequency with a normalized electric field intensity as high as 940 was achieved, and the second - harmonic conversion efficiency reached \( 6\times 10^{-3} \). - These results significantly enhance the second - harmonic response, demonstrating the potential of this structure in the field of nonlinear optics. 5. **Application Prospects**: - The structure proposed in this study not only improves SHG efficiency but also has the potential to be integrated into a chip platform, and is suitable for application fields such as optical frequency conversion, optical sensors, and integrated optical devices. In summary, through innovative structural design and theoretical analysis, this paper solves the problem of low SHG efficiency in traditional methods, providing new ideas and technical means for the development of nonlinear optics.
