Abstract:The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is an effective route of CO2 utilization. In this work, CeO2 nanorods prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using various drying methods were compared. Among them CeO2 prepared by freeze drying (CeO2-FD) had the highest and unprecedented catalytic effects, with DMC yield of 873 mmol g(-1) cat and methanol conversion of 51.6 % at 140 degrees C and 3.5 MPa for 4 h. All CeO2 nanorods catalysts have been extensively characterized and the results showed that CeO2-FD had the largest specific surface area (90.7 m(2) g (1)), pore volume, oxygen vacancy concentration (44.53%), and acid-base active site (189.4 vs 37.2 mmol g (1)). The surface properties of CeO2 nanoparticles were greatly affected by the lower absolute pressure and the use of water as a template agent in freeze-drying. For the first time, the kinetic model of sequential reaction with a dehydrating agent was deduced by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The activation energy barrier was 20 +/- 3.3 kJ mol (1) using the Arrhenius formula. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties derived from the dimensionality effect and modulation in their band structure. Herein, an important industrial catalytic material, gamma alumina (gamma-Al2O3) with well-defined two-dimensional nanosheet structure was fabricated by a designed crown ether induced assembly approach. The obtained gamma-Al2O3 nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 4 nm possess high surface area (351 m(2)/g) and 16% pentacoordinate Al3+ sites which are the main catalytic active sites for ethanol dehydration to ethylene, compared to almost no pentacoordinate Al3+ sites for the commercial gamma-Al2O3 nanoparticles. Furtherly, systematical investigation reveals that the crown ether plays the key role in the assembly of nanosheet structure. As a catalyst for ethanol dehydration to ethylene, the obtained alumina nanosheets with easily-accessible surface and more active sites, exhibit a superior catalytic performance to the commercial alumina with a much higher yield at large space velocity.

Abstract:In this work, CrOx nanoparticle-and H+-modified NaZSM5 was prepared by impregnating in chromium nitrite aqueous solution to form Cr/HNaZSM-5 composites. They were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet- visible (UV-vis), XPS, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, NH3-(CO2-) TPD, and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements, revealing that the Cr/ HNaZSM-5 composites possessed moderate surface acidity and basicity due to the Cr species or H+ partly substituting for the counter Na+ and highly dispersed CrOx nanoparticles on zeolites. The obtained composites thus provided promoting performance for catalyzing methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether with >90% conversion and ca. 100% selectivity at a lower reaction temperature. The promoted performance comes from acidic and basic sites for activating methanol to produce CH3+ and CH3O- intermediates, respectively. Moreover, as the catalyst works in succession over 500 h, the reactivity abatement is not found, suggesting excellent running stability.

Abstract:Using chemical vapor deposition to decompose ethanol at high temperature with Fe 2+ /zeolite as catalyst, we synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with thinner walls and open ends. Compared with CNTs synthesized from methane (CH 4 ), the CNTs synthesized here are straighter and have larger inner diameters and fewer defects when the experimental parameters are well controlled. CNTs of such structures will have greater potential applications.

Abstract:Shape effects of nanocrystal catalysts in different reactions have attracted remarkable attention. In the present work, three types of α-Fe2O3 oxides with different micromorphologies were rationally synthesized via a facile solvothermal method and adopted in deep oxidation of ethane. The physicochemical properties of prepared materials were characterized by XRD, N2 sorption, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FTIR, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, Mössbauer spectroscopy, in situ Raman, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and H2-TPR. Moreover, the formation energy of oxygen vacancy and surface electronic structure on various crystal faces of α-Fe2O3 were explored by DFT calculations. It is shown that nanosphere-like α-Fe2O3 exhibits much higher ethane destruction activity and reaction stability than nanocube-like α-Fe2O3 and nanorod-like α-Fe2O3 due to larger amounts of oxygen vacancies and lattice defects, which greatly enhance the concentration of reactive oxygen species, oxygen transfer speed, and material redox property. In addition to this, DFT results reveal that nanosphere-like α-Fe2O3 has the lowest formation energy of oxygen vacancy on the (110) facet ( Evo (110) = 1.97 eV) and the strongest adsorption energy for ethane (-0.26 eV) and O2 (-1.58 eV), which can accelerate the ethane oxidation process. This study has deepened the understanding of the face-dependent activities of α-Fe2O3 in alkane destruction.

Abstract:The stress state of nanofibers encapsulated in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates was investigated. Each individual nanofiber was considered as a single crystal cylinder under external compressive loading. Closed form solutions to the stresses for a modeled nanofiber with a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure at the point of initial yielding and plastic deformation were obtained in two-dimensional Cartesian and polar coordinates. The analytic solutions predict that the anisotropic deformation state occurs, which causes the fiber to change shape from a circular cross section into a polygonal cross section. Experimental validation was performed through atomic force microscopic (AFM) examination of nickel oxide nanofibers deposited by sol-gel method in AAO templates. The nickel oxide fibers within the nanopores of the template are in polygon pillar form with an average size of approximately 200 nanometers in diameter, which is the typical dimension of the cylindrical nanopores in the AAO templates.

Abstract:The effect of boron and fluorine modified γ-Al2O3 was investigated during ethanol dehydration to ethylene. The conventional and modified γ-Al2O3 were prepared by a sol–gel method and characterized by various techniques. The results showed that boron modified γ-Al2O3 possessed decreased amount of Lewis acid sites by increasing the boron content. Fluorine modified γ-Al2O3 created new Brönsted acid sites with increasing the fluorine content, which resulted in the coexistence of Brönsted and Lewis acid sites, at the same time, strong acid sites appeared. Boron modified γ-Al2O3 catalyst (Al-B1) at 340 °C exhibited excellent catalytic stability and good selectivity for ethanol conversion to ethylene. The improvement in the catalytic stability could be attributed to the lower acidity after boron modification. The results indicated that on γ-Al2O3 catalyst, strong acid sites especially Brönsted acid sites were responsible for coking deactivation and unfavorable to ethanol dehydration to ethylene.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable catalysts are among the key factors in industrial ethanol dehydration to ethylene. Among the widely studied catalysts, alumina is the most suitable for industrial application. In this study, novel gamma alumina was synthesized by solvent protection and a hydrothermal procedure. HRTEM, XRD, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, H-D exchange, and 29Si MAS NMR were employed to compare the difference in physicochemical properties between the novel gamma alumina and commercial alumina. Characterization results show that the as-synthesized novel gamma alumina mainly exposes the high-energy crystal plane (111) while the commercial alumina mainly exposes the thermostatically stable (110) crystal plane. The dominating (111) plane, according to the characterizations, endows the novel gamma alumina with a higher density of surface hydroxyl groups, higher acid content, and higher surface energy compared to the commercial alumina. The catalytic performance of the two catalysts for industrial ethanol dehydration to ethylene was studied. The novel (111) plane-exposed alumina showed a higher yield of ethylene than commercial alumina under the same reaction conditions. This could be related to the difference in atomic arrangement and the unsaturated aluminum coordination of different crystal planes. Stability testing under severe reaction conditions (450 °C, 1 MPa, 4 h−1) indicates that novel gamma alumina shows better stability (catalyst life cycle increased by 50%) and produces less acetaldehyde as a byproduct. The effects of steam treatment on the catalytic performance were further investigated. The surface acidity and the catalytic performance of novel gamma alumina present a volcanic curve with the increase in steam treatment temperature. Under the optimal water vapor treatment temperature of 650 °C, the conversion of ethanol and selectivity of ethylene were both higher than 99%.

Abstract:Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.
Co Hydrogenation to Ethanol and Higher Alcohols Over Ultrathin Cucoal Nanosheets Derived from Ldh Precursor

Abstract:Ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets derived from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor (1-3 cationic-layers) were successfully synthesized by aqueous miscible organic solvent treatment (AMOST) strategy and performed for ethanol and higher alcohols production via CO hydrogenation. The ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets (CuCo-LDH-aw) demonstrated a comparatively higher total alcohols (ROH) selectivity of 47.6%, and the molar fraction of ethanol reached up to 37.5% among the total alcohols. As revealed by XRD, HRTEM, SEM, BET and AFM characterizations, the uniform dispersion of CuCo NPs was observed over the ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets. Moreover, the optimum ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets exhibited a higher ratio of Cu + /(Cu 0 +Cu + ), which exerted a positive role on non-dissociative CO * insertion CH x intermediates. More significantly, XPS and in situ CO-DRIFT techniques uncovered the formation of CH x intermediates derived from bridge CO dissociation on the metallic Co species and the formate hydrodeoxygenation route, which involved CO * and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) reaction. Consequently, it was concluded that the triply synergistic effect of Cu + , Co and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) species contributed to the improvement in ethanol selectivity via CO hydrogenation.

Abstract:Highly porous nanocrystalline alumina was synthesized using two different precipitation processes and precipitating agents, which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and porosimetry analyses. Different precipitating agents yielded nanocrystalline alumina catalysts with different morphologies and textural properties. Batch precipitation using sodium bicarbonate at constant pH resulted in a highly porous nanocrystalline γ-alumina catalyst, having surface area of 351.47 m2 g−1, total pore volume of 1.68 cm3 g−1 and mean pore diameter of 19.17 nm. The mean crystallite size was also determined to be 3.8 nm, based on the XRD results. Catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was investigated in a slurry reactor for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME). Commercial alumina was also investigated in order to compare results with those of synthesized materials. The aforementioned γ-alumina synthesized catalyst exhibited a much better catalytic performance than other synthesized catalysts in this research as well as the commercial alumina. Ultimately, repetition of experiments emphasized the reasonable stability of this catalyst.

Abstract:A series of CuCoMg nanosheets derived from the LDH precursor were prepared by co-precipitation (CP) strategy and evaluated for the production of ethanol and higher alcohols via CO hydrogenation. The CuCoMg catalyst with a moderate amount of magnesium demonstrated a relatively higher total alcohol selectivity of 46.9%, and the molar percentage of ethanol was 38.5% among the total alcohols. Based on XRD and HRTEM characterizations, the introduction of Mg into the CuCo catalytic system prominently improved the dispersibility of CuCo nanoparticles. More importantly, XPS and in situ CO DRIFT results confirmed the presence of activated surface hydroxyl groups derived from MgO species over the reduced CuCoMg catalyst, which involved in the formation of bicarbonate (b-HCO3-) species. It was conducive to the enhancement of the amount of CHx intermediates on the CuCoMg catalyst surface, which were applied to the CO insertion to synthesize ethanol rather than coupling to produce hydrocarbons in the CO hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:The dehydration of glycerol into acrolein was investigated over small-sized -Al2O3 prepared by a metal-organic framework (MOF) templated method. The particle size of alumina strongly affected the final physicochemical properties of -Al2O3 as well as its catalytic activity. The MOF-derived, small-sized -Al2O3 (M-Al2O3) catalyst exhibited higher stability and higher activity in the glycerol dehydration reaction than conventional bulk -Al2O3 and nanorod -Al2O3 owing to enriched intercrystal mesopores and an abundance of accessible acid sites. M-Al2O3 retained its high glycerol conversion (over 80%) for nearly 200h, whereas high acrolein selectivity (74%) was achieved.

Abstract:The nano-sized alumina powders were fabricated using aluminum alkoxides as main raw materials by sol-gel method. The influence of the way of water addition on the forming process and the morphology of nano-sized Al2O3 powders was studied by TG/DTA, XRD and TEM. The results show that the way of water addition influenced the crystal style and morphology of the hydrous products and the nano-sized alumina powders. The hydrous products synthesized by the way of water addition are quasi-spheroidal amorphous substances, while the hydrous products synthesized by the way of vapor addition are acicular crystal AlOOH. It is considered that the way of water addition affected the supersaturating ability of the solutions. The structure of the precursor affected the structure of the nano-sized alumina powders. Spherical Al2O3 powders are obtained from quasi-spheroidal amorphous precursor, while flake-like Al2O3 powders are obtained from acicular precursor.

Abstract:Ethanolysis is an effective method to depolymerize weak bonds in lignite under mild conditions, which can result in the production of high-value-added chemicals. However, improving ethanolysis yield and regulating its resulting product distribution is a big challenge. Hence, exploiting highly active catalysts is vital. In this work, Fe2(MoO4)3 catalysts with zero-dimensional nanoparticles, one-dimensional (1D) nanorods, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, and three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower structures were successfully prepared and applied in the ethanolysis of Naomaohu coal. The results showed that for all samples, the yield of ethanol-soluble portions (ESP) was significantly improved. The highest yield was obtained for the Fe2(MoO4)3 nanorods, with an increase from 28.84% to 47.68%, and could be attributed to the fact that the Fe2(MoO4)3 nanorods had a higher number of exposed active (100) facets. In addition, the amounts of oxygen-containing compounds, such as ethers, esters, and phenols, increased significantly. The mechanism of ethanolysis catalyzed by the Fe2(MoO4)3 nanorods was also studied using phenylbenzyl ether (BOB) as a model compound. BOB was completely converted at 260 °C after 2 h. It is suggested that Fe2(MoO4)3 nanorods can effectively break the C-O bonds of coal macromolecules, thus promoting the conversion of coal.

Abstract:The catalytic dehydration of ethanol was studied over spherical silica particle (SSP) and alumina-silica composite (Al-SSP). The catalysts were prepared by the modified sol-gel method with various alumina content ranging from 20 to 80 mol%. The 60Al-SSP catalyst exhibited the highest weak (Lewis) and total acid site giving the best ethanol conversion of 98% and ethylene selectivity of 99% at 400 °C and enhanced the catalytic performance with the excellent activity and stability with TOS for 10 h. Changing acid sites of catalyst due to water effect in different ethanol concentrations also led to a better ethylene selectivity.

Abstract:High field quantitative Al-27 single pulse (SP) MAS NMR combined with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of ethanol is used to study the surface of gamma-Al2O3 during phase transformation processes induced by calcination in the temperature range of 500-1300 degrees C. Following ethanol adsorption, ethylene is generated during TPD with a desorption temperature above 200 degrees C. The amount of ethylene decreases monotonically with increasing calcination temperature prior to TPD. Significantly, Al-27 SP MAS NMR reveals that the amount of penta-coordinated Al3+ ions also decreases with increasing calcination temperature. A quantitative (within experimental error) correlation between the amount of penta-coordinated Al3+ ions and the amount of strongly adsorbed ethanol molecules (i.e., the ones that convert to ethylene during TPD) is obtained. These results provide good evidence for a proposal that the penta-coordinated aluminum sites are the catalytic active sites on alumina surfaces during ethanol dehydration reaction across the entire course of gamma-to-alpha Al2O3 phase transformations. Abstract:γ-Alumina single-crystalline nanorods have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of boehmite precursor which was prepared by solvothermally treating AlCl3 ⁎ 6H2O, NaOH, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate in water and dimethylbenzene mixed solvents. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Our experiments show that the surfactant plays an important role in the morphology and assembly of boehmite. Photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the boehmite nanorods was also investigated.

Unveiling the Morphology Dependence of Ceria Nanocrystals for Boosting Low−temperature Cyclohexane Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Tailoring the oxygen vacancy concentration by controlling the morphology of CeO2 has been proved to be a feasible strategy to construct excellent catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reactions. Here, the morphology dependence of ceria nanocrystals for low-temperature cyclohexane ODH was investigated. The results reflected the variation of oxygen vacancy concentration of ceria with morphologies, resulting in different reactivity. Temperature-programmed re-oxidation (TPRO) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) tests demonstrated that prepared catalysts possessed the opposite replenishment and consumption capacity of active oxygen species. In addition to superficially correlating the facet effect of ceria with the formation of oxygen vacancies, as reported in most literatures, the facet dependence on the selectivity of the target product also has come to light by density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, the temperature programmed isotope exchange (TPIE) and kinetic experiments revealed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism rather than the recognized Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. That is, the lower reaction temperature makes the main active agent electrophilic oxygen species, and the competitive adsorption of cyclohexane and oxygen on the intrinsic oxygen vacancies causes the dependence of reaction rate on oxygen concentration. The findings provide fresh insights into the optimization of the CeO2-based catalysts in cyclohexane oxidative dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Considering the specific surface area, flexible structures, high porosity, and a homogeneous and isotropic nature down to the atomic scale possessed by the amorphous nanostructure, an interesting controlled dehydration route has been developed to synthesize the crystalline/amorphous core/shell (C/A-C/S) MoO3 nanocomposite, in which macroisopolyanion [Mo36O112(H2O)16]8– ({Mo36}) was successfully assembled into a one-dimensional connection and underwent a deficient crystallization induced by the prospective infiltrative dehydration process. The as-obtained MoO3 samples’ affirmative composition and composite structure have been further demonstrated by the XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectra measurements. As a result of this special C/A-C/S structure, the MoO3 composite exhibited high selectivity and a higher sensor response, at a lower working temperature (180 °C) to ethanol gas compared with other 1D MoO3 micro/nanostructures reported previously.
