Abstract:We consider the spectrum of the Laplace operator acting on $\mathcal{L}^p$ over a conformally compact manifold for $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. We prove that for $p \neq 2$ this spectrum always contains an open region of the complex plane. We further show that the spectrum is contained within a certain parabolic region of the complex plane. These regions depend on the value of $p$, the dimension of the manifold, and the values of the sectional curvatures approaching the boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we study the spectrum of a fundamental differential operator on a Hilbert-Pólya space. A number is an eigenvalue of this differential operator if and only if it is a nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function. An explicit formula is given for the eigenfunction associated with each nontrivial zero of the zeta function. Every eigenfunction is characterized via the Poisson summation formula by a sequence of mysterious functions whose explicit formulas are given.

Abstract:We study the p-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral p-independence to assumptions on the curvature.

We establish a relationship between the bottom of the spectrum and the positive solutions of quantum graphs, which is a generalization of the classical Allegretto-Piepenbrink theorem. Abstract:We reprove the fact, due to Backus, that the Poincar{é} operator in ellipsoids admits a pure point spectrum with polynomial eigenfunctions.We then show that the eigenvalues of the Poincar{é} operator restricted to polynomial vector fields of fixed degree admitsa limit repartition given by a probability measure that we construct explicitely. For that, we use Fourier integral operators and ideas comingfrom Alan Weinstein and the first author in the seventies. The starting observation is that the orthogonal polynomials in ellipsoids satisfy a PDE.

Abstract:We investigate tensor products of Hilbert complexes, in particular the (essential) spectrum of their Laplacians. It is shown that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian associated to the tensor product complex is computable in terms of the spectra of the factors. Applications are given for the $\overline\partial$-Neumann problem on the product of two or more Hermitian manifolds, especially regarding (non-) compactness of the associated $\overline\partial$-Neumann operator.

Abstract:We study the magnetic Laplacian on the Lieb lattice, and prove Cantor spectrum for arbitrary irrational magnetic flux. We also provide a complete spectral analysis for the reduced one-dimensional Hamiltonian, proving Cantor spectra for all irrational frequencies, and sharp arithmetic phase transitions. Part of our analysis reveals a novel coexistence phenomenon of point spectrum and absolutely/singular continuous spectrum.

Abstract:The fixed-point spectrum of a locally compact second countable group G on lp is defined to be the set of real numbers p such that every action by affine isometries of G on lp admits a fixed-point. We show that this set is either empty, or is equal to a set of one of the following forms : [1,\pc[, [1,\pc[\{2} for some \pc<\infty or \pc=\infty, or [1,\pc], [1,\pc]\{2} for some pc<infty. This answers a question closely related to a conjecture of C. Drutu which asserts that the fixed-point spectrum is connected for isometric actions on Lp(0,1). We also study the topological properties of the fixed-point spectrum on Lp(X,\mu) for general measure spaces (X,\mu), and show partial results toward the conjecture for actions on Lp(0,1). In particular, we prove that the spectrum F_{L^{\infty}(X,\mu)(G,\pi) of actions with linear part \pi is either empty, or an interval of the form [1,\pc] or [1,\infty[, whenever \pi is an orthogonal representation associated to a measure-preserving ergodic action on a finite measure space (X,\mu).

Abstract:In this short note we observe, on locally symmetric spaces of higher rank, a connection between the growth indicator function introduced by Quint and the modified critical exponent of the Poincaré series equipped with the polyhedral distance. As a consequence, we provide a different characterization of the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in terms of the growth indicator function. Moreover, we explore the relationship between these three objects and the temperedness.

Abstract:We consider a normal operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$. Under various assumptions on the spectrum of $T$, we give bounds for the spectrum of $T+A$ where $A$ is $T$-bounded with relative bound less than 1 but we do not assume that $A$ is symmetric or normal. If the imaginary part of the spectrum of $T$ is bounded, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the region between certain hyperbolas whose asymptotic slope depends on the $T$-bound of $A$. If the spectrum of $T$ is contained in a bisector, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the area between certain rotated hyperbola. The case of infinite gaps in the spectrum of $T$ is studied. Moreover, we prove a stability result for the essential spectrum of $T+A$. If $A$ is even $p$-subordinate to $T$, then we obtain stronger results for the localisation of the spectrum of $T+A$.

Abstract:We study the boundedness of the Hilbert transform $H$ and the Hilbert maximal operator $H^*$ on weighted Lorentz spaces $\Lambda^p_u(w)$. We start by giving several necessary conditions that, in particular, lead us to the complete characterization of the weak-type boundedness of both $H$ and $H^*$, whenever $u\in A_1$. For the strong-type case, we also get the characterization of both operators when $p>1$. Applications to the case of Lorentz spaces $L^{p,q}(u)$ are presented.

Abstract:We study the class of Lorentzian polynomials. The class contains homogeneous stable polynomials as well as volume polynomials of convex bodies and projective varieties. We prove that the Hessian of a nonzero Lorentzian polynomial has exactly one positive eigenvalue at any point on the positive orthant. This property can be seen as an analog of Hodge--Riemann relations for Lorentzian polynomials. Lorentzian polynomials are intimately connected to matroid theory and negative dependence properties. We show that matroids, and more generally M-convex sets, are characterized by the Lorentzian property, and develop a theory around Lorentzian polynomials. In particular, we provide a large class of linear operators that preserve the Lorentzian property and prove that Lorentzian measures enjoy several negative dependence properties. We also prove that the class of tropicalized Lorentzian polynomials coincides with the class of M-convex functions in the sense of discrete convex analysis. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from M-convex functions. We give two applications of the general theory. First, we prove that the homogenized multivariate Tutte polynomial of a matroid is Lorentzian whenever the parameter q satisfies $0 < q \le 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest Mason's conjecture from 1972 and negative dependence properties of the random cluster model model in statistical physics. Second, we prove that the multivariate characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix is Lorentzian. This refines a result of Holtz who proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix form an ultra log-concave sequence.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize the set of manifolds over which the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms depends on $p$. We will consider the case of manifolds that are warped products at infinity and certain quotients of Hyperbolic space. In the case of warped products at infinity we prove that the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms contains a parabolic region which depends on $k$, $p$ and the limiting curvature $a_0$ at infinity. For $M=\mathbb{H}^{N+1}/\Gamma $ with $\Gamma$ a geometrically finite group such that $M$ has infinite volume and no cusps, we prove that the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms is a exactly a parabolic region together with a set of isolated eigenvalues on the real line.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the spectrum of the Lame operator L = d(2)/dx(2) - 6P(x + z(0); tau) in L-2(R, C), where P(z; tau) is the Weierstrass elliptic function with periods 1 and tau, and z(0) is an element of C is chosen such that L has no singularities on R. (i) We completely determine the explicit location of intersection points of spectral arcs. (ii) We give a complete picture of the deformation of the spectrum as tau = 1/2 + ib and b > 0 varies. In particular, we show that the spectrum has exactly 9 different types of graphs for different b's, and we also give the explicit range of b for each type of graphs. This solves open problems raised in [17]. (iii) As an application of the spectrum and the deep connection of the Lame equation with the mean field equation from [4], we prove the existence of tau = 1/2 + ib such that the mean field equation Delta u + e(u) = 16 pi delta(0) on the rhombus torus E-tau := C/(Z + Z(tau)) has no even axisymmetric solutions but does have 2 even not-axisymmetric solutions. For ε>0, define the ε-pseudospectrum σε(A) of A asσε(A)={z∈σ(A+E):E∈B(H),‖E‖<ε}. In this paper, the pseudospectra of several special classes of operators are characterized. As an application, complete descriptions are given of the maps of B(H) leaving invariant the pseudospectra of A•B for different kinds of binary operations • on operators such as the difference A−B, the operator product AB, and the Jordan product AB+BA.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{B}(H)$ be the bounded, linear operators on a separable Hilbert space equipped with the norm topology. A property is called typical if the set of operators fulfilling the property is co-meager. We show that having non-empty continuous spectrum is a typical property and that the operators with non-empty point spectrum form a nowhere dense set. In addition we show that the set of operators with empty point spectrum is dense and characterize the closure of the set of those operators for which the spectrum and the point spectrum coincide.

Abstract:In a recent work by González-Pérez, Parcet and Xia, the boundedness over non-commutative $L_p$-spaces of an analogue of the Hilbert transform was studied. This analogue is defined as a Fourier multiplier with symbol $m\colon \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})\to \mathbb{R}$ arising from the action by isometries of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ on the $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$. More concretely, $m$ is a lifting of the function on $\mathbb{H}^3$ that takes values $\pm 1$ in the two regions formed by dividing the space by a hyperbolic plane. The boundedness of $T_m$ on $L_p(\mathcal{L} \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C}))$ for $p\neq 2$ was disproved by Parcet, de la Salle and Tablate. Nevertheless, we will show that this Fourier multiplier is bounded when restricted to the arithmetic lattices $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-n}])$, solving a question left open by González-Pérez, Parcet and Xia.
