Abstract:The Earth's climate change, colloquially known as global warming, is detrimental to life across the globe. The most significant contributor to the greenhouse gas (GHG) effect is carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. In the United States (US) economy, the major benefactor of CO2 emissions is the energy sector, with the top contribution coming from fossil fuels. The estimated 2020 CO2 emission was 5981 million metric tons, despite a dramatic reduction in the trendline compared to the year 2019. An ultimatum for energy consumption rises from fiscal development, growing population, and technological advancements. Energy use and GHG emissions are inclined upward, provoking an unwholesome nation. This paper studies (i) the principal sources of energy use and CO2 emission, (ii) the inclination of such sources, (iii) trends and drivers of GHG emissions, (iv) low carbon development and carbon footprint, and (v) the diverse US projects for reducing GHG emissions and the challenges in deploying them. We have forecasted the emissions from fossil fuels from 2025 to 2050 and compared the results using MAPE to calculate the mean percentage error. The forecasted results of 2050 show high accuracy, suggesting probable approaches to reduce further CO2 emissions, measures to reduce emissions through carbon capture and sequestration, and help in the development of improved GHG mitigations for the nation.

Abstract:The 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, for the first time, stated that CO2 removal will be necessary to meet our climate goals. How-ever, there is a cost to accomplish CO2 removal or mitigation that varies by source. Accordingly, a sensible strategy to prevent climate change begins by mitigating emission sources requiring the least energy and capital investment per ton of CO2, such as new emitters and long-term stationary sources. The pro-duction of CO2-derived products should also start by favoring processes that bring to market high-value products with sufficient margin to tolerate a higher cost of goods.
Effects of Direct Air Capture Technology Availability on Stranded Assets and Committed Emissions in the Power Sector

Abstract:We examine the effects of negative emission technologies availability on fossil fuel-based electricity generating assets under deep decarbonization trajectories. Our study focuses on potential premature retirements (stranding) and committed emissions of existing power plants globally and the effects of deploying direct air carbon capture and biomass-based carbon capture and sequestration technologies. We use the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM), an integrated assessment model, to simulate the global supply of electricity under a climate mitigation scenario that limits global warming to 1.5–2°C temperature increase over the century. Our results show that the availability of direct air capture (DAC) technologies reduces the stranding of existing coal and gas based conventional power plants and delays any stranding further into the future. DAC deployment under the climate mitigation goal of limiting the end-of-century warming to 1.5–2°C would reduce the stranding of power generation from 250 to 350 GW peaking during 2035-2040 to 130-150 GW in years 2050-2060. With the availability of direct air capture and carbon storage technologies, the carbon budget to meet the climate goal of limiting end-of-century warming to 1.5–2°C would require abating 28–33% of 564 Gt CO 2 -the total committed CO 2 emissions from the existing power plants vs. a 46–57% reduction in the scenario without direct air capture and carbon storage technologies.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide emissions in developing countries are closely tied to their economy and play a crucial role in the world’s future emissions. In this paper, we put forward an alternative energy use paradigm shift of low-carbon emissions from operational, governance, institutional, and cultural viewpoints (OGIC). An urbanization factor is introduced into the Kaya identity, and three simulations are conducted to forecast the carbon footprint and to explore the effects of the energy use paradigm shift policy. The simulation results show that, in the context of the energy use paradigm shift, the years 2015 and 2024 are the two inflection points that separate the carbon footprint into three periods of extensive consumption (2000–2015), early energy transition (2016–2023), and late energy transition (2024–2030). Overall, the peak carbon emission value is forecasted to appear during the third stage. The findings are expected to demonstrate the effects of the energy use paradigm shift on carbon emissions and assist policy makers formulate a scientific policy framework for low carbon development.

Abstract:The discussion in chapter 2 addressed what might be described as a microview of the US energy economy— how we use energy as individuals, how we measure our personal consumption, and how we pay for it. We turn attention now to a more expansive perspective— the use of energy on a national scale, including a discussion of associated economic benefits and costs. We focus specifically on implications for emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2. If we are to take the issue of human- induced climate change seriously— and I do— we will be obliged to adjust our energy system markedly to reduce emissions of this gas, the most important agent for human- induced climate change. And we will need to do it sooner rather than later. This chapter will underscore the magnitude of the challenge we face if we are to successfully chart the course to a more sustainable climate- energy future. We turn later to strategies that might accelerate our progress toward this objective.We elected in this volume to focus on the present and potential future of the energy economy of the United States. It is important to recognize that the fate of the global climate system will depend not just on what happens in the United States but also to an increasing extent on what comes to pass in other large industrial economies. China surpassed the United States as the largest national emitter of CO2 in 2006. The United States and China together were responsible in 2012 for more than 42% of total global emissions. Add Russia, India, Japan, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Iran to the mix (the other members of the top 10 emitting countries ordered in terms of their relative contributions), and we can account for more than 60% of the global total. Given the importance of China to the global CO2 economy (more than 26% of the present global total and likely to increase significantly in the near term), I decided that it would be instructive to include here at least some discussion of the situation in China— to elaborate what the energy economies of China and the United States have in common, outlining at the same time the factors and challenges that set them apart.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are projected to continue increasing through 2040, resulting in at least a 1.5°C increase in global temperatures, as modeled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).1 The near‐term IPCC modeling scenarios include extreme and concurrent hazards, with unequal distribution of warming across geographies and impacts on industries, and socioeconomic communities and populations.2 Globally, 41 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are attributed to the energy sector.3 The United States is responsible for 12.5 percent of the global emissions, with China as the second largest GHG emitter.4 In efforts to reduce emissions, an increasing number of governments and regulating bodies are employing a variety of policy mechanisms, creating carbon markets to incentivize companies to invest in innovative and efficient clean energy technologies. Among these policies is a cap‐and‐trade or a cap‐and‐invest (C&I) framework impacting the largest emitters. The C&I framework is intended to hold industries accountable while allowing individual companies to buy, sell, trade, or invest allowances for carbon emissions.

Abstract:Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), have led to increasing atmospheric concentrations, very likely the primary cause of the 0.8 degrees C warming the Earth has experienced since the Industrial Revolution. With industrial activity and population expected to increase for the rest of the century, large increases in greenhouse gas emissions are projected, with substantial global additional warming predicted. This paper examines forces driving CO2 emissions, a concise sector-by-sector summary of mitigation options, and research and development (R&D) priorities. To constrain warming to below approximately 2.5 degrees C in 2100, the recent annual 3% CO2 emission growth rate needs to transform rapidly to an annual decrease rate of from 1 to 3% for decades. Furthermore, the current generation of energy generation and end-use technologies are capable of achieving less than half of the emission reduction needed for such a major mitigation program. New technologies will have to be developed and deployed at a rapid rate, especially for the key power generation and transportation sectors. Current energy technology research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) programs fall far short of what is required.
The global impacts of US climate policy: a model simulation using GCAM-TU and MAGICC

Abstract:To assess the potential impacts of the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, this study applied GCAM-TU (an updated version of the Global Change Assessment Model) to simulate global and regional emission pathways of energy-related CO2, which show that US emissions in 2100 would reduce to -2.4Gt, -0.7Gt and -0.2Gt under scenarios of RCP2.6, RCP3.7 and RCP4.5, respectively. Two unfavourable policy scenarios were designed, assuming a temporary delay and a complete stop for US mitigation actions after 2015. Simulations by the Model for the Assessment of Greenhouse-gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC) indicate that the temperature increase by 2100 would rise by 0.081 degrees C-0.161 degrees C compared to the three original RCPs (Representative Concentration Pathways) if US emissions were kept at their 2015 levels until 2100. The probability of staying below 2 degrees C would decrease by 6-9% even if the US resumes mitigation efforts for achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target after 2025. It is estimated by GCAM-TU that, without US participation, increased reduction efforts are required for the rest of the world, including developing countries, in order to achieve the 2 degrees C goal, resulting in 18% higher global cumulative mitigation costs from 2015 to 2100.Key policy insights President Trump's climate policies, including planned withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, cast a shadow on international climate actions, and would lower the likelihood of achieving the 2 degrees C target.To meet the 2 degrees C target without the US means increased reduction efforts and mitigation costs for the rest of the world, and considerable economic burdens for major developing areas.Active state-, city- and enterprise-level powers should be supported to keep the emission reduction gap from further widening even with reduced mitigation efforts from the US federal government.

Abstract:This chapter discusses steps that could be taken to realize the long- term goal of reducing, if not eliminating, climate- altering emissions associated with the consumption of coal, oil, and natural gas. I choose to focus on initiatives that could be adopted over the next several decades to advance this objective in the United States. The key elements of the vision proposed for the United States should be applicable, however, also to China and to other large emitting countries. As indicated at the outset, the overall focus in this volume has been on the United States and China, the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, recognizing at the same time differences in states of development and national priorities of the two countries. The vision I outline here for a low- carbon-energy future for the United States should apply also to other countries. The time scale for implementation may differ, however, from country to country, depending on details of local conditions and priorities— economic, social, and environmental. The data presented in Chapter 3 (Figs. 3.1 and 3.2) provide a useful starting point— essential background— for discussion of potential future scenarios (US EIA 2015). They define how energy is used in the current US economy and the services responsible for the related emissions, with key data summarized in Table 16.1. Generation of electricity was responsible for emission of 2,050 million tons of CO2 in 2013, 1,580 million tons from combustion of coal, and 442 million tons from natural gas, with a minor contri-bution, 34.7 million tons, from oil. The residential, commercial, and industrial sectors accounted, respectively, for 38%, 36%, and 26% of emissions associated with economy-wide consumption of electricity. The power sector was responsible for 38% of total national emissions. Transportation contributed an additional 1,826 million tons, 34% of the national total. The bulk of the emissions from transportation (98%) was associated with consumption of petroleum products, gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuel, with the balance from natural gas
GHG Emission Reductions and Costs to Achieve Kyoto Target.

Abstract:Emission projection and marginal abatement cost curves (MACs) are the central components of any assessment of future carbon market, such as CDM (clean development mechanism) potentials, carbon quota price etc. However, they are products of very complex, dynamic systems driven by forces like population growth, economic development, resource endowments, technology progress and so on. The modeling approaches for emission projection and MACs evaluation were summarized, and some major models and their results were compared. Accordingly, reduction and cost requirements to achieve the Kyoto target were estimated. It is concluded that Annex I Parties' total reduction requirements range from 503-1304 MtC with USA participation and decrease significantly to 140-612 MtC after USA's withdrawal. Total costs vary from 21-77 BUSD with USA and from 5-36 BUSD without USA if only domestic reduction actions are taken. The costs would sharply reduce while considering the three flexible mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol with domestic actions' share in the all mitigation strategies drops to only 0-16% .

Abstract:An in-depth analysis of the role of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in climate change is examined here along with their diverse sources, including the combustion of fossil fuels, agriculture, and industrial processes. Key GHG components such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) are considered, along with data on emissions across various economic sectors. The consequences of climate change are also highlighted, ranging from more frequent and intense extreme weather events to rising sea levels and impacts on ecosystems and human health. The industrial revolution and unrestricted use of fossil fuels are key factors leading to an increase in GHG concentrations in the atmosphere. Global efforts to reduce emissions are considered, starting with the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and culminating in the 2015 Paris Agreement. The limited effectiveness of early initiatives is underscored, emphasizing the significant importance of the Paris Agreement that provides a global framework for establishing goals to reduce GHG emissions by country. The Green Climate Fund and other international financial mechanisms are also considered as essential tools for financing sustainable projects in developing countries. The global community faces the challenge and necessity for more ambitious efforts to achieve the set goals for reducing GHG emissions. Successful strategies are examined by Sweden, Costa Rica, and Denmark to achieve zero GHG emissions that integrate renewable energy sources and technologies. The importance of global cooperation for creating a sustainable future is also emphasized.

Abstract:This paper presents a modeling comparison project on how the 2°C climate target could affect economic and energy systems development in China and India. The analysis uses a framework that harmonizes baseline developments and soft-links seven national and global models being either economy wide (CGE models) or energy system models. The analysis is based on a global greenhouse gas emission pathway that aims at a radiative forcing of 2.9 W/m 2 in 2100 and with a policy regime based on convergence of per capita CO2 emissions with emissions trading. Economic and energy implications for China and India vary across models. Decreased energy intensity is the most important abatement approach in the CGE models, while decreased carbon intensity is most important in the energy system models. Reliance on Coal without Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is significantly reduced in most models, while CCS is a central abatement technology in energy system models, as is renewable and nuclear energy. Concerning economic impacts China bears in general a higher cost than India, as China benefits less from emissions trading. Costs are also affected by changes in fossil fuel prices, currency appreciation from capital inflow from carbon trading and timing of emission

Abstract:Based on the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model and scenario analysis, the impacts of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on the carbon emission space and mitigation cost in China, European Union (EU), and Japan are assessed under Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and 2 °C scenarios due to the changed emission pathway of the U.S. The results show that, under the condition of constant global cumulative carbon emissions and a fixed burden-sharing scheme among countries, the failure of the U.S. to honor its NDC commitment to different degrees will increase the U.S. carbon emission space and decrease its mitigation cost. However, the carbon emission space of other parties, including China, EU, and Japan, will be reduced and their mitigation costs will be increased. In 2030, under the 2 °C target, the carbon price will increase by 4.4–14.6 US$ t−1 in China, by 9.7–35.4 US$ t−1 in the EU, and by 16.0–53.5 US$ t−1 in Japan. In addition, China, EU, and Japan will incur additional Gross Domestic Production (GDP) loss. Under the 2 °C target, the GDP loss of China would increase by US$22.0–71.1 billion (equivalent to 16.4–53.1 US$ per capita), the EU's GDP loss would increase by US$9.4–32.1 billion (equivalent to 20.7–71.1 US$ per capita), and Japan's GDP loss will increase by US$4.1–13.5 billion (equivalent to 34.3–111.6 US$ per capita).

Abstract:The U.S. household consumption, a key engine for the global economy, has significant carbon footprints across the world. Understanding how the U.S. household consumption on specific goods or services drives global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is important to guide consumption-side strategies for climate mitigation. Here we examined global GHG emissions driven by the U.S. household consumption from 1995 to 2014 using an environmentally extended multi-regional input-output model and detailed U.S. consumer expenditure survey data. The results show that the annual carbon footprint of the U.S. households ranged from 17.7 to 20.6 tCO2eq/capita with an expanding proportion occurring overseas. Housing and transportation contributed 53-66% of the domestic carbon footprint. Overseas carbon footprint shows an overall increasing trajectory, from 16.4% of the total carbon footprint in 1995 to the peak of 20.4% in 2006. These findings provide valuable insights on the scale, distribution, and variations of the global GHG emissions driven by the U.S. household consumption for developing consumption-side strategies in the U.S. for climate mitigation.

Abstract:Many trace constituents other than carbon dioxide affect the radiative budget of the atmosphere. The existing international agreement to limit greenhouse gases, the Kyoto Protocol, includes carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and credit for some carbon sinks. We investigate technological options for reducing emissions of these gases and the economic implications of including other greenhouse gases and sinks in the climate change control policy. We conduct an integreated assessment of costs using the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model combined with estimates of abatement costs for non-CO2 greenhouse gases and sinks. We find that failure to take advantage of the other gas and sink flexibility would nearly double aggregate Annex B costs. Including all the GHGs and sinks is actually cheaper than if only CO2 had been included in the Protocol and their inclusion achieves greater overall abatement. There remains considerable uncertainty in these estimates, the magnitude of the savings depends heavily on reference projections of emissions, for example, but these uncertainties do not change the overall conclusion that non-CO2 GHGs are an important part of a climate control policy.

Abstract:Growing concern over climate change mitigation has heightened the search for low-carbon, affordable, and non-intermittent energy alternatives. In this perspective, hydropower, thermal, solar, photovoltaic , and nuclear energy sources fit all these qualities as they are well-known as cleaner and ecosystem-friendly energy sources. However, despite the attractiveness of the clean energy transition, the extant literature has less documentation on the pertinent role of nuclear energy in the "climate change mitigation (SDG-13)" agenda, hence making it difficult to predict nuclear energy-CO 2 emissions (CO 2 e) nexus. Hence, the present study, using IPAT and the "environmental Kuznets curve (EKC)" framework, explores the consequences of nuclear energy generation, population dynamics, and economic progress on CO 2 e in the "United States of America (USA)" by applying a "dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (DARDL)" model from 1973 to 2021. The study provides evidence the existence of the EKC phenomena, suggesting that economic expansion hurts the environment up to a specific threshold level of per capita income, which is identified as US$ 29,581.16. Further empirical findings also show the detrimental effect of population-induced-emission. Remarkably, a 1% rise in nuclear energy generation dwindles CO 2 e by around 0.819%. The outcomes of this research demonstrate that economic growth level, population, and CO 2 emission are entangled. However, there is a need for a collective role from both stakeholders and policymakers in achieving "SDG-13" as well as "clean and affordable energy (SDG-7)" with a paradigm shift of the USA energy portfolio away from fossil fuels to renewables.

Abstract:Across the global environment, anthropogenic activities are intensifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the extent that the global environment is at the risk of crossing the irreversible turning point, and to avoid the worst consequences, carbon emissions must halve by the year 2030. As countries in the global economy are grappling with measures to tackle the challenge, recent advances in clean technologies have emerged as potential tools the world could rely on to stabilize and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This has ignited a profound discourse on feasibility of the mitigating effect of these technologies in a global context. In this regard, the current study investigates the impact of clean technology on environmental sustainability in a global context. The study analyses the impact of clean technology adoption on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions within the framework of the standard Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis, using a panel of 190 countries representing the global economy, classified into developed countries and emerging-developing countries for comparative analysis over the period 2005–2020. The dynamic panel approach, system generalized method of moments (system GMM) econometric technique is employed. The results indicated that, renewable energy consumption, and access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking, proxy measures of clean technology have negative impact on CO 2 emission in a global context and in developed and emerging-developing countries. Additionally, development level of countries does not have significant influence on the carbon mitigating effects of these technologies between developed and emerging-developing countries. Moreover, the study confirms validity of the EKC hypothesis within the scope of this investigation. The paper provides empirical evidence for the potential use of clean technologies in reducing carbon emissions and promoting universal green transformation of countries in the global economy. The findings have valuable implications for policymakers and offer useful policy recommendations.

Estimating the carbon dioxide emission levels of G7 countries: A count data approach

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. The G7 countries account for about 40% of the global gross domestic product and emit 25% of energy-related emissions due to their energy use, releasing so much carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This study uses competing count data models to model carbon emissions between 2002 and 2021. All the hypotheses are significant and with varied effects on the energy use of the G7 economies, backing the increasing levels of emissions. The findings show that emissions from manufacturing and construction have mixed effects on the energy use of the G7 countries, increasing by 2.37% and reducing by 6.65% and 8.39% in some countries. The study proves that the transport sector is the hard-to-abate sector as the effects of the transport covariate impact minimally between 6.49% and 4.13% of the G7. This means that the transport sector is the high-hanging fruit for deep decarbonization due to the low level of technology readiness. Also, emissions from solid fuels increase between 6.49% and 4.13% in the G7 countries, implying that coal consumption has peaked due to the current energy crisis. The cross-sectional dependence (CD) analysis proves a strong significant dependence among the study countries depicting the global nature of pollution. The fitness of the model was performed using the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria to determine the appropriate method to present robust and consistent results. The panel's negative Poisson regression model obtains the lowest Akaike information criteria and Bayesian information criteria values and is therefore the most appropriate model for the analysis. This will serve as a rallying point for achieving net zero emission (NZE) targets by mid-century and for scaling technologies to achieve that goal.

Abstract:Global warming conditions and the impending energy crisis have gained attention of the research community worldwide. Urban researchers have been increasingly focused on energy-efficient cities from varying perspectives to gain insight and improve efficiency contributions in overall design components. Micro-level studies with families or individuals as research units have yielded abundant accomplishments, yet top urban macro-level factors with the highest energy consumption impact have not been identified. Direct CO2 Emissions (DCE) of urban residents in 286 cities at the prefectural level and above in China are first estimated in this study. The relationship between DCE and urban macro-level factors including climatic, socio-economic and urban form with partial correlation analyses is then investigated. Findings and suggestions include: (1) Climatic metrics exert significant impact on residential Central Heating DCE and Electricity DCE with cities in different Building Climate Divisions exhibiting DCE variations. (2) Metrics measuring economic development levels exhibit the most significant positive impact on Electricity DCE, Gas DCE, Transportation DCE and total DCE per capita; however, total DCE per GDP decreases as economic development level rises. (3) Urban form metrics significantly impact Electricity DCE with greater effects on Transportation DCE, thus indicating the need for further research on urban form metrics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The planned US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement as well as uncertainty about federal climate policy have raised questions about the country's future emissions trajectory. Our model-based analysis accounts for uncertainty in fuel prices and energy technology capital costs and suggests that market forces are likely to keep US energy-related greenhouse gas emissions relatively flat or produce modest reductions: in the absence of new federal policy, 2040 greenhouse gas emissions range from +10% to -23% of the baseline estimate. Natural gas versus coal utilization in the electric sector represents a key tradeoff, particularly under conservative assumptions about future technology innovation. The lowest emissions scenarios are produced when the cost of natural gas and electric vehicles decline while coal and oil prices increase relative to the baseline.
