Abstract:• The increasing volume of joint replacement with diminishing reimbursements demands a focus on value-based care, one aspect of which is implant cost. • There is a spectrum of interventions aimed at implant use restrictions with varying impacts on physician autonomy. • The benefits of various strategies for controlling implant price for optimizing cost must be weighed against surgeon autonomy.
