Resonant Scattering of Outer Zone Relativistic Electrons by Multiband Emic Waves and Resultant Electron Loss Time Scales

Abstract:To improve our understanding of the role of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in radiation belt electron dynamics, we perform a comprehensive analysis of EMIC wave-induced resonant scattering of outer zone relativistic (>0.5MeV) electrons and resultant electron loss time scales with respect to EMIC wave band, L shell, and wave normal angle model. The results demonstrate that while H+-band EMIC waves dominate the scattering losses of similar to 1-4MeV outer zone relativistic electrons, it is He+-band and O+-band waves that prevail over the pitch angle diffusion of ultrarelativistic electrons at higher energies. Given the wave amplitude, EMIC waves at higher L shells tend to resonantly interact with a larger population of outer zone relativistic electrons and drive their pitch angle scattering more efficiently. Obliquity of EMIC waves can reduce the efficiency of wave-induced relativistic electron pitch angle scattering. Compared to the frequently adopted parallel or quasi-parallel model, use of the latitudinally varying wave normal angle model produces the largest decrease in H+-band EMIC wave scattering rates at pitch angles similar to 5MeV. At a representative nominal amplitude of 1nT, EMIC wave scattering produces the equilibrium state (i.e., the lowest normal mode under which electrons at the same energy but different pitch angles decay exponentially on the same time scale) of outer belt relativistic electrons within several to tens of minutes and the following exponential decay extending to higher pitch angles on time scales from <1min to similar to 1h. The electron loss cone can be either empty as a result of the weak diffusion or heavily/fully filled due to approaching the strong diffusion limit, while the trapped electron population at high pitch angles close to 90 degrees remains intact because of no resonant scattering. In this manner, EMIC wave scattering has the potential to deepen the anisotropic distribution of outer zone relativistic electrons by reshaping their pitch angle profiles to top-hat. Overall, H+-band and He+-band EMIC waves are most efficient in producing the pitch angle scattering loss of relativistic electrons at similar to 1-2MeV. In contrast, the presence of O+-band EMIC waves, while at a smaller occurrence rate, can dominate the scattering loss of 5-10MeV electrons in the entire region of the outer zone, which should be considered in future modeling of the outer zone relativistic electron dynamics.
Combined Scattering Loss of Radiation Belt Relativistic Electrons by Simultaneous Three-Band EMIC Waves: A Case Study

Abstract:Multiband electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can drive efficient scattering loss of radiation belt relativistic electrons. However, it is statistically uncommon to capture the three bands of EMIC waves concurrently. Utilizing data from the Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science magnetometer onboard Van Allen Probe A, we report the simultaneous presence of three (H + , He + , and O + ) emission bands in an EMIC wave event, which provides an opportunity to look into the combined scattering effect of all EMIC emissions and the relative roles of each band in diffusing radiation belt relativistic electrons under realistic circumstances. Our quantitative results, obtained by quasi‐linear diffusion rate computations and 1‐D pure pitch angle diffusion simulations, demonstrate that the combined resonant scattering by the simultaneous three‐band EMIC waves is overall dominated by He + band wave diffusion, mainly due to its dominance over the wave power (the mean wave amplitudes are approximately 0.4 nT, 1.6 nT, and 0.15 nT for H + , He + , and O + bands, respectively). Near the loss cone, while 2–3 MeV electrons undergo pitch angle scattering at a rate of the order of 10 −6 –10 −5 s −1 , 5–10 MeV electrons can be diffused more efficiently at a rate of the order of 10 −3 –10 −2 s −1 , which approaches the strong diffusion level and results in a moderately or heavily filled loss cone for the atmospheric loss. The corresponding electron loss timescales (i.e., lifetimes) vary from several days at the energies of ~2 MeV to less than 1 h at ~10 MeV. This case study indicates the leading contribution of He + band waves to radiation belt relativistic electron losses during the coexistence of three EMIC wave bands and suggests that the roles of different EMIC wave bands in the relativistic electron dynamics should be carefully incorporated in future modeling efforts.

Abstract:Exohiss waves are whistler mode hiss observed in the plasmatrough region. We present a case study of exohiss waves and the corresponding background plasma distributions observed by the Van Allen Probes in the dayside low-latitude region. The analysis of wave Poynting fluxes, suprathermal electron fluxes, and cold electron densities supports the scenario that exohiss leaks from the plasmasphere into the plasmatrough. Quasilinear calculations further reveal that exohiss can potentially cause the resonant scattering loss of radiation belt electrons similar to< MeV on a comparable time scale to that associated with the storm time plasmaspheric hiss. These results clearly illustrate that exohiss may need to be taken into account in future radiation belt models.
Parametric analysis of pitch angle scattering and losses of relativistic electrons by oblique EMIC waves

Abstract:This study analyzes the effects of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves on relativistic electron scattering and losses in the Earth’s outer radiation belt. EMIC emissions are commonly observed in the inner magnetosphere and are known to reach high amplitudes, causing significant pitch angle changes in primarily > 1 MeV electrons via cyclotron resonance interactions. We run test-particle simulations of electrons streaming through helium band waves with different amplitudes and wave normal angles and assess the sensitivity of advective and diffusive scattering behaviors to these two parameters, including the possibility of very oblique propagation. The numerical analysis confirms the importance of harmonic resonances for oblique waves, and the very oblique waves are observed to efficiently scatter both co-streaming and counter-streaming electrons. However, strong finite Larmor radius effects limit the scattering efficiency at high pitch angles. Recently discussed force-bunching effects and associated strong positive advection at low pitch angles are, surprisingly, shown to cause no decrease in the phase space density of precipitating electrons, and it is demonstrated that the transport of electrons into the loss cone balances out the scattering out of the loss cone. In the case of high-amplitude obliquely propagating waves, weak but non-negligible losses are detected well below the minimum resonance energy, and we identify them as the result of non-linear fractional resonances. Simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that these resonances might contribute to subrelativistic electron precipitation but are likely to be overshadowed by non-resonant effects.

Properties of Intense Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Implications for Quasi-linear, Nonlinear, and Nonresonant Wave-Particle Interactions

Abstract:Resonant interactions between relativistic electrons and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves provide an effective loss mechanism for this important electron population in the outer radiation belt. The diffusive regime of electron scattering and loss has been well incorporated into radiation belt models within the framework of the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas the nonlinear regime has been mostly studied with test particle simulations. There is also a less investigated, nonresonant regime of electron scattering by EMIC waves. All three regimes should be present, depending on the EMIC waves and ambient plasma properties, but the occurrence rates of these regimes have not been previously quantified. This study provides a statistical investigation of the most important EMIC wave-packet characteristics for the diffusive, nonlinear, and nonresonant regimes of electron scattering. We utilize 3 years of Van Allen Probe observations to derive distributions of wave amplitudes, wave-packet sizes, and rates of frequency variations within individual wave-packets. We demonstrate that EMIC waves typically propagate as wave-packets with $\sim 10$ wave periods each, and that $\sim 3-10$\% of such wave-packets can reach the regime of nonlinear resonant interaction with 2 to 6 MeV electrons. We show that EMIC frequency variations within wave-packets reach $50-100$\% of the center frequency, corresponding to a significant high-frequency tail in their wave power spectrum. We explore the consequences of these wave-packet characteristics for high and low energy electron precipitation by H-band EMIC waves and for the relative importance of quasi-linear and nonlinear regimes of wave-particle interactions.

Statistical Analysis on Plasmatrough Exohiss Waves from the Van Allen Probes

Abstract:In this study using Van Allen Probe wave observations we investigate the statistical properties of exohiss waves, which are structureless whistler mode waves observed outside the plasmapause. The exohiss waves are identified based on the cold electron number density, frequency distribution, ellipticity, and wave normal angle. The statistical analysis on exohiss wave properties shows that exohiss waves prefer to occur over 3 < L < 6 from dawnside to noon and duskside during geomagnetic quiet times, and their wave power is larger at smaller values of L shell. The frequency of exohiss mainly ranges from 200 to 300 Hz and is almost independent of L shell. The median values of ellipticity and electromagnetic planarity of exohiss waves are 0.91 and 0.54, respectively. Furthermore, the equatorward Poynting flux is comparable to the poleward Poynting flux at the equator and it becomes dominant at the absolute value of the magnetic latitude vertical bar lambda vertical bar similar to 20 degrees. Our observation results reveal the statistical features of exohiss waves for the first time and support the exohiss formation mechanism that exohiss originates from plasmaspheric hiss leakage. The results demonstrate exohiss as an important energy dissipation route for plasmaspheric hiss and significantly improve the understanding of plasmaspheric hiss evolution in the radiation belt region.
Exohiss Wave Enhancement Following Substorm Electron Injection in the Dayside Magnetosphere

Abstract:Exohiss is a low-frequency structureless whistler-mode emission potentially contributing to the precipitation loss of radiation belt electrons outside the plasmasphere. Exohiss is usually considered the plasmaspheric hiss leaked out of the dayside plasmapause. However, the evolution of exohiss after the leakage has not been fully understood. Here we report the prompt enhancements of exohiss waves following substorm injections observed by Van Allen Probes. Within several minutes, the energetic electron fluxes around 100 keV were enhanced by up to 5 times, accompanied by an up to 10-time increase of the exohiss wave power. These substorm-injected electrons are shown to produce a new peak of linear growth rate in the exohiss band (< 0.1fce). The corresponding path-integrated growth rate of wave power within 10° latitude of the magnetic equatorial plane can reach 13.4, approximately explaining the observed enhancement of exohiss waves. These observations and simulations suggest that the substorm-injected energetic electrons could amplify the preexisting exohiss waves.

Abstract:How relativistic electrons are lost is an important question surrounding the complex dynamics of the Earth's outer radiation belt. Radial loss to the magnetopause and local loss to the atmosphere are two main competing paradigms. Here on the basis of the analysis of a radiation belt storm event on 27 February 2014, we present new evidence for the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave-driven local precipitation loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of the outer radiation belt. During the main phase of this storm, the radial profile of relativistic electron phase space density was quasi-monotonic, qualitatively inconsistent with the prediction of radial loss theory. The local loss at low L shells was required to prevent the development of phase space density peak resulting from the radial loss process at high L shells. The rapid loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of outer radiation belt was observed as a dip structure of the electron flux temporal profile closely related to intense EMIC waves. Our simulations further confirm that the observed EMIC waves within a quite limited longitudinal region were able to reduce the off-equatorially mirroring relativistic electron fluxes by up to 2 orders of magnitude within about 1.5 h.
Latitudinal Dependence of Nonlinear Interaction Between Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Wave and Radiation Belt Relativistic Electrons

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are long suggested to account for the rapid loss of radiation belt relativistic electrons. Here we perform both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to comprehensively investigate the nonlinear interaction between EMIC wave and relativistic electrons. In particular, we emphasize the dependence of nonlinear processes on the electron initial latitude. The nonlinear phase trapping yields negative equatorial pitch angle transport, with efficiency varying over the electron initial latitude, implying that it can increase the loss rate predicted by quasilinear theory. The nonlinear channel effect phase bunching produces positive equatorial pitch angle transport, less dependent on the electron initial latitude, suggesting that it can decrease the loss rate predicted by quasilinear theory. The nonlinear cluster effect phase bunching alternately causes positive and negative equatorial pitch angle transport, quasi‐periodically dependent on the electron initial latitude, suggesting that it can either decrease or increase the loss rate predicted by the quasilinear theory. Such latitudinal dependence of nonlinear processes should be taken into account in the evaluation of radiation belt electron loss rate driven by EMIC waves.

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are important for precipitating energetic electrons into Earth's upper atmosphere, while the quantitative effect of each type of whistler mode wave on electron precipitation is not well understood. In this letter, we evaluate energetic electron precipitation driven by three types of whistler mode waves: plume whistler mode waves, plasmaspheric hiss, and exohiss observed outside the plasmapause. By quantitatively analyzing three conjunction events between Van Allen Probes and POES/MetOp satellites, together with quasi‐linear calculation, we found that plume whistler mode waves are most effective in pitch angle scattering loss, particularly for the electrons from tens to hundreds of keV. Our new finding provides the first direct evidence of effective pitch angle scattering driven by plume whistler mode waves and is critical for understanding energetic electron loss process in the inner magnetosphere. We suggest the effect of plume whistler mode waves be accurately incorporated into future radiation belt modeling.

Abstract:Using the recently developed hybrid finite difference (HFD) code, we solve the two-dimensional bounce-averaged Fokker–Planck equation with cross-pitch-angle-energy diffusion to evaluate the electron phase space density (PSD) evolution driven by multiple wave–particle interactions during storms. Numerical results show that PSDs of ∼MeV electrons can be depleted by two orders of magnitude at lower pitch-angles during the main phase primarily due to pitch-angle scattering by hiss and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, and then enhance by two orders of magnitude compared with the prestorm state during the recovery phase primarily due to acceleration by chorus wave. Furthermore, the effects of the cross terms and various electromagnetic waves are also been identified.
Nonresonant scattering of energetic electrons by electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves: spacecraft observations and theoretical framework

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves lead to rapid scattering of relativistic electrons in Earth's radiation belts, due to their large amplitudes relative to other waves that interact with electrons of this energy range. A central feature of electron precipitation driven by EMIC waves is deeply elusive. That is, moderate precipitating fluxes at energies below the minimum resonance energy of EMIC waves occur concurrently with strong precipitating fluxes at resonance energies in low-altitude spacecraft observations. This paper expands on a previously reported solution to this problem: nonresonant scattering due to wave packets. The quasi-linear diffusion model is generalized to incorporate nonresonant scattering by a generic wave shape. The diffusion rate decays exponentially away from the resonance, where shorter packets lower decay rates and thus widen the energy range of significant scattering. Using realistic EMIC wave packets from $\delta f$ particle-in-cell simulations, test particle simulations are performed to demonstrate that intense, short packets extend the energy of significant scattering well below the minimum resonance energy, consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, the calculated precipitating-to-trapped flux ratio of relativistic electrons is compared to ELFIN observations, and the wave power spectra is inferred based on the measured flux ratio. We demonstrate that even with a narrow wave spectrum, short EMIC wave packets can provide moderately intense precipitating fluxes well below the minimum resonance energy.

Efficient Scattering Loss of Energetic Electrons by Enhanced Higher‐Band ECH Waves Observed by Van Allen Probes

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves, which are responsible for the diffuse aurora, are usually observed with the strongest intensity in the first band. Here, we present observations of enhanced higher‐band ECH with wave intensities above 10−3 mV2m−2 Hz−1 by Van Allen Probes. Fully thermal simulation results indicate that these waves can be locally excited by the observed electron distributions, and higher plasma density and lower magnetic strength are favorable for generating the enhanced higher‐band ECH. The pitch angle diffusion coefficient of the higher‐band ECH can exceed 10−5 s−1 inside the loss cone for energetic electrons (300 eV–∼15 keV), greater than the momentum diffusion coefficient by ∼100 times. It is suggested that the enhanced higher‐band ECH can also efficiently scatter these electrons into the loss cone and contribute to the diffuse aurora.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have been proposed to cause efficient losses of highly relativistic (>1MeV) electrons via gyroresonant interactions. Simultaneous observations of EMIC waves and equatorial electron pitch angle distributions, which can be used to directly quantify the EMIC wave scattering effect, are still very limited, however. In the present study, we evaluate the effect of EMIC waves on pitch angle scattering of ultrarelativistic (>1MeV) electrons during the main phase of a geomagnetic storm, when intense EMIC wave activity was observed in situ (in the plasma plume region with high plasma density) on both Van Allen Probes. EMIC waves captured by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) probes and on the ground across the Canadian Array for Real-time Investigations of Magnetic Activity (CARISMA) are also used to infer their magnetic local time (MLT) coverage. From the observed EMIC wave spectra and local plasma parameters, we compute wave diffusion rates and model the evolution of electron pitch angle distributions. By comparing model results with local observations of pitch angle distributions, we show direct, quantitative evidence of EMIC wave-driven relativistic electron losses in the Earth's outer radiation belt.
The Radiation Belt Electron Scattering by Magnetosonic Wave: Dependence on Key Parameters

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves have been found capable of creating radiation belt electron butterfly distributions in the inner magnetosphere. To investigate the physical nature of the interactions between radiation belt electrons and MS waves, and to explore a preferential condition for MS waves to scatter electrons efficiently, we performed a comprehensive parametric study of MS wave‐electron interactions using test particle simulations. The diffusion coefficients simulated by varying the MS wave frequency show that the scattering effect of MS waves is frequency insensitive at low harmonics (f < 20 fcp), which has great implications on modeling the electron scattering caused by MS waves with harmonic structures. The electron scattering caused by MS waves is very sensitive to wave normal angles, and MS waves with off 90° wave normal angles scatter electrons more efficiently. By simulating the diffusion coefficients and the electron phase space density evolution at different L shells under different plasma environment circumstances, we find that MS waves can readily produce electron butterfly distributions in the inner part of the plasmasphere where the ratio of electron plasma‐to‐gyrofrequency (fpe/fce) is large, while they may essentially form a two‐peak distribution outside the plasmapause and in the inner radiation belt where fpe/fce is small.
Quasi-Linear Diffusion of the Radiation Belt Energetic Electrons by Ground-Based Hf Heater-Induced Elf/Vlf Emissions

Abstract:The dynamics of energetic electron fluxes in both the inner and the outer radiation belts is very important with respect to satellite protection, in particular for low and middle-orbit satellites. Based on the quasi-linear theory of gyroresonant wave-particle interaction, we compute the diffusion coefficients and loss timescales for radiation belt energetic electrons due to cyclotron resonance with artificial ELF/VLF emissions that are radiated through modulating the currents in the lower ionosphere by ground-based powerful high-frequency (HF) transmitter. We test the electron pitch-angle scattering in the outer zone, typically at L=4.6 (where the HAARP facility is located) and in the inner zone, typically at L=1.5. The results indicate that the electron loss timescales due to artificial injection of ELF/VLF waves in the inner and the outer radiation belts depend largely on the value of the cold-plasma parameter α*(∝B2/N0, where B is the ambient magnetic field and N0 the electron number density), the properties of wave frequency spectrum, the wave power and the electron energy in resonance with the waves. Generally, relativistic electrons in the outer zone are much easier to be precipitated into the atmosphere by artificial ELF/VLF whistler waves and lower-energy electrons (≤200keV) can undergo pitch-angle scattering more efficiently than higher-energy electrons (≥500keV). Since ELF/VLF waves can experience in situ amplification due to multiple magnetospheric reflections within the magnetospheric cavity, it can be reasonably expected that, under suitable situations, ground-based HF transmitters can provide feasible radiation power into the ionosphere to induce the injection of ELF/VLF waves into the inner magnetosphere, and consequently account for potential rapid removal of outer belt relativistic electrons in a timescale of from 1 to 3 days and of inner belt relativistic electrons that generally have a lifetime of 100 days or more in a timescale of the order of 10 days.
