Combined Scattering of Suprathermal Electrons by Whistler‐Mode Chorus and Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves in the Low‐Density Plasmatrough

Abstract:Based on the observation from Van Allen Probes, we report an event of intense and simultaneous electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) and chorus waves inside the low-density plasmatrough. By calculating the scattering rates and performing the diffusion simulations, we for the first time evaluate the combined scattering of suprathermal electrons by EMIC and chorus waves in the low-density plasmatrough. Landau acceleration of suprathermal electrons by EMIC waves is mainly restricted at large pitch angles while their scattering loss by chorus waves occurs at small pitch angles well below 90 degrees. When EMIC and chorus waves are simultaneously present, the scattering of suprathermal electrons by the two waves is very different from that by each type of waves alone. EMIC waves play a complementary role in the scattering of suprathermal electrons by chorus waves, which facilitate the scattering of suprathermal electrons over all pitch angles. The near-equatorially minoring suprathermal electrons are firstly scattered toward intermediate pitch angles by EMIC waves and further toward the loss cone by chorus waves. Our results highlight the complementary role of different types of magnetospheric waves in the suprathermal electron scattering, which potentially have vital implications for the dynamics of suprathermal electrons in the planetary magnetosphere.

Abstract:Exohiss waves are whistler mode hiss observed in the plasmatrough region. We present a case study of exohiss waves and the corresponding background plasma distributions observed by the Van Allen Probes in the dayside low‐latitude region. The analysis of wave Poynting fluxes, suprathermal electron fluxes, and cold electron densities supports the scenario that exohiss leaks from the plasmasphere into the plasmatrough. Combined Scattering Loss of Radiation Belt Relativistic Electrons by Simultaneous Three-Band EMIC Waves: A Case Study

Abstract:Multiband electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can drive efficient scattering loss of radiation belt relativistic electrons. However, it is statistically uncommon to capture the three bands of EMIC waves concurrently. Utilizing data from the Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science magnetometer onboard Van Allen Probe A, we report the simultaneous presence of three (H + , He + , and O + ) emission bands in an EMIC wave event, which provides an opportunity to look into the combined scattering effect of all EMIC emissions and the relative roles of each band in diffusing radiation belt relativistic electrons under realistic circumstances. Our quantitative results, obtained by quasi‐linear diffusion rate computations and 1‐D pure pitch angle diffusion simulations, demonstrate that the combined resonant scattering by the simultaneous three‐band EMIC waves is overall dominated by He + band wave diffusion, mainly due to its dominance over the wave power (the mean wave amplitudes are approximately 0.4 nT, 1.6 nT, and 0.15 nT for H + , He + , and O + bands, respectively). Near the loss cone, while 2–3 MeV electrons undergo pitch angle scattering at a rate of the order of 10 −6 –10 −5 s −1 , 5–10 MeV electrons can be diffused more efficiently at a rate of the order of 10 −3 –10 −2 s −1 , which approaches the strong diffusion level and results in a moderately or heavily filled loss cone for the atmospheric loss. The corresponding electron loss timescales (i.e., lifetimes) vary from several days at the energies of ~2 MeV to less than 1 h at ~10 MeV. This case study indicates the leading contribution of He + band waves to radiation belt relativistic electron losses during the coexistence of three EMIC wave bands and suggests that the roles of different EMIC wave bands in the relativistic electron dynamics should be carefully incorporated in future modeling efforts.

Abstract:Suprathermal electrons are a major heat source of ionospheric plasma. How the suprathermal electrons evolve during their bounces inside the plasmasphere is a fundamental question for the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. On the basis of Van Allen Probes observations and quasi-linear simulations, we present here the first quantitative study on the evolution of suprathermal electrons under the competition between Landau heating by whistler mode hiss waves and Coulomb collisional cooling by background plasma inside a plasmaspheric plume. We show that the Landau heating can prevail over the collisional cooling for>50 eV electrons and cause the field-aligned suprathermal electron fluxes to increase by up to 1 order of magnitude within 1.5 hr. Our results imply that the plasmaspheric plume hiss waves could mediate energy from the ring current electrons to the ionospheric plasma.
The Radiation Belt Electron Scattering by Magnetosonic Wave: Dependence on Key Parameters

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves have been found capable of creating radiation belt electron butterfly distributions in the inner magnetosphere. To investigate the physical nature of the interactions between radiation belt electrons and MS waves, and to explore a preferential condition for MS waves to scatter electrons efficiently, we performed a comprehensive parametric study of MS wave‐electron interactions using test particle simulations. The diffusion coefficients simulated by varying the MS wave frequency show that the scattering effect of MS waves is frequency insensitive at low harmonics (f < 20 fcp), which has great implications on modeling the electron scattering caused by MS waves with harmonic structures. The electron scattering caused by MS waves is very sensitive to wave normal angles, and MS waves with off 90° wave normal angles scatter electrons more efficiently. By simulating the diffusion coefficients and the electron phase space density evolution at different L shells under different plasma environment circumstances, we find that MS waves can readily produce electron butterfly distributions in the inner part of the plasmasphere where the ratio of electron plasma‐to‐gyrofrequency (fpe/fce) is large, while they may essentially form a two‐peak distribution outside the plasmapause and in the inner radiation belt where fpe/fce is small.
Effects of Super-Gaussian Electron Velocity Distributions on the Ion Feature of Thomson Scattering off Two-Ion Plasmas

Abstract:The influence of super-Gaussian velocity distributions on the ion feature of Thomson scattering off two-ion plasmas is studied. The analytical solution to the dispersion equation shows that although both the frequencies of the two (fast and slow) ion-acoustic waves increase with the index of the super-Gaussian, the slow wave is more weakly dependent on the index due to the screening of the light ions. In the case that plasma can sustain two lightly damped ion-acoustic waves, the inferred plasma parameters such as electron temperature and plasma temperature ratio may suffer some errors without consideration of super-Gaussian electron velocity distributions. Since the relative intensity between the resonant peaks of the fast and slow waves is sensitive to the super-Gaussian index, the super-Gaussian velocity distributions may be measurable with Thomson scattering off laser-heated two species ion plasmas.
Parametric analysis of pitch angle scattering and losses of relativistic electrons by oblique EMIC waves

Abstract:This study analyzes the effects of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves on relativistic electron scattering and losses in the Earth’s outer radiation belt. EMIC emissions are commonly observed in the inner magnetosphere and are known to reach high amplitudes, causing significant pitch angle changes in primarily > 1 MeV electrons via cyclotron resonance interactions. We run test-particle simulations of electrons streaming through helium band waves with different amplitudes and wave normal angles and assess the sensitivity of advective and diffusive scattering behaviors to these two parameters, including the possibility of very oblique propagation. The numerical analysis confirms the importance of harmonic resonances for oblique waves, and the very oblique waves are observed to efficiently scatter both co-streaming and counter-streaming electrons. However, strong finite Larmor radius effects limit the scattering efficiency at high pitch angles. Recently discussed force-bunching effects and associated strong positive advection at low pitch angles are, surprisingly, shown to cause no decrease in the phase space density of precipitating electrons, and it is demonstrated that the transport of electrons into the loss cone balances out the scattering out of the loss cone. In the case of high-amplitude obliquely propagating waves, weak but non-negligible losses are detected well below the minimum resonance energy, and we identify them as the result of non-linear fractional resonances. Simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that these resonances might contribute to subrelativistic electron precipitation but are likely to be overshadowed by non-resonant effects.

Properties of Intense Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Implications for Quasi-linear, Nonlinear, and Nonresonant Wave-Particle Interactions

Abstract:Resonant interactions between relativistic electrons and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves provide an effective loss mechanism for this important electron population in the outer radiation belt. The diffusive regime of electron scattering and loss has been well incorporated into radiation belt models within the framework of the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas the nonlinear regime has been mostly studied with test particle simulations. There is also a less investigated, nonresonant regime of electron scattering by EMIC waves. All three regimes should be present, depending on the EMIC waves and ambient plasma properties, but the occurrence rates of these regimes have not been previously quantified. This study provides a statistical investigation of the most important EMIC wave-packet characteristics for the diffusive, nonlinear, and nonresonant regimes of electron scattering. We utilize 3 years of Van Allen Probe observations to derive distributions of wave amplitudes, wave-packet sizes, and rates of frequency variations within individual wave-packets. We demonstrate that EMIC waves typically propagate as wave-packets with $\sim 10$ wave periods each, and that $\sim 3-10$\% of such wave-packets can reach the regime of nonlinear resonant interaction with 2 to 6 MeV electrons. We show that EMIC frequency variations within wave-packets reach $50-100$\% of the center frequency, corresponding to a significant high-frequency tail in their wave power spectrum. We explore the consequences of these wave-packet characteristics for high and low energy electron precipitation by H-band EMIC waves and for the relative importance of quasi-linear and nonlinear regimes of wave-particle interactions.

Abstract:Quasi-linear theory (QLT) has been commonly used to study the Landau resonant interaction between radiation belt electrons and magnetosonic (MS) waves. However, the long-parallel wavelengths of MS waves can exceed their narrow spatial confinement and cause a transit-time effect during interactions with electrons. We perform a careful investigation to validate the applicability of QLT to interactions between MS waves, which have a distribution in frequency and wave normal angle, and radiation belt electrons using test particle simulations. We show agreement between these two methods for scattering rate of intense MS waves at L = 4.5 inside the plasmapause, but find a significant inconsistency for MS waves outside the plasmapause, due to the broad transit-time region in (E-k,alpha) space. Consequently, we introduce a particle-independent criterion to justify the validity of QLT for MS waves: the wave spatial confinement should be longer than two parallel wavelengths.
Deep learning model of hiss waves in the plasmasphere and plumes and their effects on radiation belt electrons

Abstract:Hiss waves play an important role in removing energetic electrons from Earth’s radiation belts by precipitating them into the upper atmosphere. Compared to plasmaspheric hiss that has been studied extensively, the evolution and effects of plume hiss are less understood due to the challenge of obtaining their global observations at high cadence. In this study, we use a neural network approach to model the global evolution of both the total electron density and the hiss wave amplitudes in the plasmasphere and plume. After describing the model development, we apply the model to a storm event that occurred on 14 May 2019 and find that the hiss wave amplitude first increased at dawn and then shifted towards dusk, where it was further excited within a narrow region of high density, namely, a plasmaspheric plume. During the recovery phase of the storm, the plume rotated and wrapped around Earth, while the hiss wave amplitude decayed quickly over the nightside. Moreover, we simulated the overall energetic electron evolution during this storm event, and the simulated flux decay rate agrees well with the observations. By separating the modeled plasmaspheric and plume hiss waves, we quantified the effect of plume hiss on energetic electron dynamics. Our simulation demonstrates that, under relatively quiet geomagnetic conditions, the region with plume hiss can vary from L = 4 to 6 and can account for up to an 80% decrease in electron fluxes at hundreds of keV at L > 4 over 3 days. This study highlights the importance of including the dynamic hiss distribution in future simulations of radiation belt electron dynamics.
Resonant Scattering of Outer Zone Relativistic Electrons by Multiband Emic Waves and Resultant Electron Loss Time Scales

Abstract:To improve our understanding of the role of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in radiation belt electron dynamics, we perform a comprehensive analysis of EMIC wave-induced resonant scattering of outer zone relativistic (>0.5MeV) electrons and resultant electron loss time scales with respect to EMIC wave band, L shell, and wave normal angle model. The results demonstrate that while H+-band EMIC waves dominate the scattering losses of similar to 1-4MeV outer zone relativistic electrons, it is He+-band and O+-band waves that prevail over the pitch angle diffusion of ultrarelativistic electrons at higher energies. Given the wave amplitude, EMIC waves at higher L shells tend to resonantly interact with a larger population of outer zone relativistic electrons and drive their pitch angle scattering more efficiently. Obliquity of EMIC waves can reduce the efficiency of wave-induced relativistic electron pitch angle scattering. Compared to the frequently adopted parallel or quasi-parallel model, use of the latitudinally varying wave normal angle model produces the largest decrease in H+-band EMIC wave scattering rates at pitch angles similar to 5MeV. At a representative nominal amplitude of 1nT, EMIC wave scattering produces the equilibrium state (i.e., the lowest normal mode under which electrons at the same energy but different pitch angles decay exponentially on the same time scale) of outer belt relativistic electrons within several to tens of minutes and the following exponential decay extending to higher pitch angles on time scales from <1min to similar to 1h. The electron loss cone can be either empty as a result of the weak diffusion or heavily/fully filled due to approaching the strong diffusion limit, while the trapped electron population at high pitch angles close to 90 degrees remains intact because of no resonant scattering. In this manner, EMIC wave scattering has the potential to deepen the anisotropic distribution of outer zone relativistic electrons by reshaping their pitch angle profiles to top-hat. Overall, H+-band and He+-band EMIC waves are most efficient in producing the pitch angle scattering loss of relativistic electrons at similar to 1-2MeV. In contrast, the presence of O+-band EMIC waves, while at a smaller occurrence rate, can dominate the scattering loss of 5-10MeV electrons in the entire region of the outer zone, which should be considered in future modeling of the outer zone relativistic electron dynamics.
Effects of polarization reversal on the pitch angle scattering of radiation belt electrons and ring current protons by EMIC waves

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the effects of polarization reversal of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves at the crossover frequencies on computations of bounce‐averaged pitch angle diffusion coefficients of radiation belt electrons and ring current protons. We find that inclusion of polarization reversal can cause significant changes of H + band induced particle diffusion coefficients, while scattering by the He + band is almost unaffected. Our results show that the pure L‐mode approach, which has been widely implemented in previous studies, tends to underestimate the diffusion coefficients of ultra‐relativistic (>4 MeV) electrons and overestimate those of 10‐50 keV and >100 keV protons caused by H + band EMIC waves. Especially for >100 keV protons, the differences in diffusion coefficients can be larger by an order of magnitude. We confirm that the polarization reversal can contribute importantly to the scattering loss of radiation belt electrons and ring current protons by H + band EMIC waves.

Abstract:Plasmaspheric hiss plays an important role in driving the precipitation loss of radiation belt electrons via pitch angle scattering, which is also known as the major cause of the formation of the "slot" region between the inner and outer radiation belt. Therefore, it is of scientific importance to acquire a complete picture of the global distribution of plasmaspheric hiss. Using the thirty-three month high-quality wave data of the Van Allen Probes from September 2012 to May 2015, which provide excellent coverage in the entire inner magnetosphere, we investigate in detail the characteristics of the global distribution of plasmaspheric hiss bin-averaged wave amplitude and occurrence rate with respect to the geomagnetic activity level, L-shell, geomagnetic latitude, and magnetic local time. It is demonstrated that the bin-averaged hiss amplitude strongly depends on the level of geomagnetic activity and exhibits a pronounced day-night asymmetry. Dayside hiss shows a tendency intensifying with the disturbed geomagnetic condition, which is primarily confined to L = 2:5-4.0. In contrast, the average hiss amplitude on the nightside tends to decrease. It should also be noted that plasmaspheric hiss at different amplitude levels varies distinctly with geomagnetic condition. As the geomagnetic disturbance increases, the occurrence rate of hiss wave at a smaller amplitude level ( i.e., 5-30 pT) increases on the nightside but decreases on the dayside, while the occurrence pattern of higher amplitude (> 30 pT) hiss wave is opposite. For high amplitude hiss wave, the occurrence rate increases on the dayside during intense geomagnetic activities while decreases on the nightside. This is probably because during active times, suprathermal electron fluxes are larger on the nightside, which causes stronger Landau damping of whistler mode waves and thus limits the ability of chorus waves to propagate into the plasmasphere and evolve into plasmaspheric hiss. In addition, plasmaspheric hiss waves with the amplitudes ranging from 5 to 30 pT have the highest occurrence probability both around the geomagnetic equator and at higher latitudes. Our statistical results can provide a reasonable and accurate cognition complementary to the current knowledge of the global features of plasmaspheric hiss, especially in the inner magnetosphere of L = 2-6, thereby offering essential input parameters of hiss wave distribution for future simulations of the dynamic spatiotemporal variations of radiation belt electrons at different energies and pitch angles under the influence of diverse solar wind and magentospheric circumstances. Therefore, we suggest that these new properties of hiss wave should be incorporated into the future modeling of radiation belt electron dynamics.
Quantification of Energetic Electron Precipitation Driven by Plume Whistler Mode Waves, Plasmaspheric Hiss, and Exohiss

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are important for precipitating energetic electrons into Earth's upper atmosphere, while the quantitative effect of each type of whistler mode wave on electron precipitation is not well understood. In this letter, we evaluate energetic electron precipitation driven by three types of whistler mode waves: plume whistler mode waves, plasmaspheric hiss, and exohiss observed outside the plasmapause. By quantitatively analyzing three conjunction events between Van Allen Probes and POES/MetOp satellites, together with quasi‐linear calculation, we found that plume whistler mode waves are most effective in pitch angle scattering loss, particularly for the electrons from tens to hundreds of keV. Our new finding provides the first direct evidence of effective pitch angle scattering driven by plume whistler mode waves and is critical for understanding energetic electron loss process in the inner magnetosphere. We suggest the effect of plume whistler mode waves be accurately incorporated into future radiation belt modeling.

Abstract:Intensive collisions between electrons and neutral particles in partially ionized plasmas generated in atmospheric/sub-atmospheric pressure environments can sufficiently affect the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves, particularly in the sub-wavelength regime. To investigate the collisional effect in such plasmas, we introduce a simplified plasma slab model with a thickness on the order of the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic wave. The scattering matrix method (SMM) is applied to solve the wave equation in the plasma slab with significant nonuniformity. Results show that the collisions between the electrons and the neutral particles, as well as the incident angle and the plasma thickness, can disturb the transmission and reduce reflection significantly.
Very Oblique Whistler Mode Propagation in the Radiation Belts: Effects of Hot Plasma and Landau Damping

Abstract:Satellite observations of a significant population of very oblique chorus waves in the outer radiation belt have fueled considerable interest in the effects of these waves on energetic electron scattering and acceleration. However, corresponding diffusion rates are extremely sensitive to the refractive index N, controlled by hot plasma effects including Landau damping and wave dispersion modifications by suprathermal (15-100 eV) electrons. A combined investigation of wave and electron distribution characteristics obtained from the Van Allen Probes shows that peculiarities of the measured electron distribution significantly reduce Landau damping, allowing wave propagation with high N similar to 100-200. Further comparing measured refractive indexes with theoretical estimates incorporating hot plasma corrections to the wave dispersion, we provide the first experimental demonstration that suprathermal electrons indeed control the upper limit of the refractive index of highly oblique whistler mode waves. Such results further support the importance of incorporating very oblique waves into radiation belt models.

Abstract:A one-dimensional model, in which the ionization and collision are omitted in the Debye sheath region, is applied to investigate the effect of the superthermal electrons on the heat flux through a magnetized sheath. For different temperatures and concentrations of the superthermal electron, and magnitudes and directions of the magnetic field, the profiles of plasma parameters including ion density and flow velocity perpendicular to the wall, the background and superthermal electron densities, and sheath potential in the presheath region are calculated. The variation of the plasma density and sheath potential drop at the Debye sheath entrance with the superthermal electrons and magnetic field modifies the particle and heat fluxes across the Debye sheath to the material surface. The sheath heat transmission coefficient can increase significantly even for a very small superthermal electron population. The dependence of the sheath heat transmission coefficient on the magnetic field angle decreases with the contribution of the superthermal electron in a strong magnetized sheath. When investigation of the heat flux including the superthermal electrons to a water-cooled W/Cu monoblack for the tokamak divertor, compared to the case of without superthermal electrons, it is found that the increase in both heat flux to the material surface and surface temperature of the material is mainly due to the enhancement of the sheath potential drop caused by the superthermal electrons, but the increase in the latter is not as pronounced as the former.
