Abstract:Single-layer phase screen is a classical, simple and accurate approach for simulating the optical field under turbulence, and it is generally used in free space optical communication (FSOC). However, conventional single-layer phase screen studies have rarely considered the pointing errors from FSOC, which prevents the theoretical results for mobile FSOC from being verified using simulated optical fields. This work establishes a simulation method for the single-layer phase screen with pointing errors. Statistics on simulated optical field with pointing errors indicated that the previous theoretical results for the long-term average irradiance and irradiance fluctuation probability density function (PDF) for mobile FSOC can be modified to better fit the simulation results. In addition, the received power fluctuation PDF, average bit-error-rate (BER), and the influence of non-zero mean pointing errors are investigated through the simulated optical field with pointing errors. The proposed simulation method provides a powerful approach for understanding and evaluating the comprehensive influences of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors on the FSOC.

Abstract:The knowledge of atmospheric turbulence is quite imperative for free space optical (FSO) communications. This letter reveals the relationship between spatial and temporal phase fluctuations in an FSO link. We demonstrate that the phase fluctuation is an ergodic process in stationary and homogeneous turbulence. On the basis of wave structure which sets up a bridge between spatial and temporal phase characteristics, we theoretically derive the power spectrum and the autocorrelation function which predict the conditions of ergodicity. A series of experiments were carried out to test theoretical predictions where coordinate optical phase was measured for a wide range of turbulent strengths. As a result, we show that both the temporal and spatial phase spectra have low-pass characteristics and both their average and autocorrelation show ergodic behavior, following the same law with the variation of turbulent strength. This letter indicates that the spatial and temporal statistics of phase fluctuations could be interconverted for free-space optical communication and other applications related to the propagation of optical signals in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Performance of the direct-detection coherent receiver array for free-space optical (FSO) communications is evaluated with a full-link simulation model. This FSO full-link model (from the transmitter to the receiver) is established based on the phase screen method and the coupling theory by considering the amplitude fading and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Via full-link simulation, bit error rates are evaluated using maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining algorithms based on single-photodetector direct-detection coherent receiver array with different receiver numbers. The improvement of spatial diversity is numerically demonstrated by comparing with the single receiver.
Single-Shot Phase Diversity Wavefront Sensing in Deep Turbulence via Metasurface Optics

Abstract:Free-space optical communication (FSOC) systems offer high-bandwidth and secure communication with minimal capital costs. Adaptive optics (AO) are typically added to these systems to decrease atmospheric channel losses; however, the performance of traditional AO wavefront sensors degrades in long-range, deep turbulence conditions. Alternative wavefront sensors using phase diversity can successfully reconstruct wavefronts in deep turbulence, but current implementations require bulky setups with high latency. In this work, we employ a nanostructured birefringent metasurface optic that enables low-latency phase diversity wavefront sensing in a compact form factor. We prove the effectiveness of this approach in mid-to-high turbulence (Rytov numbers from 0.2 to 0.6) through simulation and experimental demonstration. In both cases an average 16-fold increase in signal from the corrected beam is obtained. Our approach opens a pathway for compact, robust wavefront sensing that enhances range and accuracy of FSOC systems.

Abstract:A modulating retro-reflector (MRR) with optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensation is presented and demonstrated to mitigate the turbulence-induced channel distortion for high-speed coherent free-space optical (FSO) communications. The impact of the turbulence on the beam spot, the phase fluctuation and the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed for the MRR FSO link carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals with spatial or single-mode fiber (SMF)-based OPC. The mitigation of the atmospheric turbulence is verified by comparing the transmission performance of the MRR FSO links with and without OPC. The compensation using SMF-based OPC is experimentally demonstrated in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric chamber. The BER is improved by two orders of magnitude in the turbulent channel with the temperature difference of 250 degrees C, and the power penalty is reduced by about 2.0 dB, which agree well with the simulation results. A larger receiving aperture size will improve the compensation effect

Abstract:An in-flight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) free-space optical (FSO) communication channel model is proposed by considering the beam deviation of the UAV under different motion states and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulences. The influence of the different motion states and turbulences on the communication quality is evaluated through phase screen and Monte Carlo methods. When the average bit error rate (BER) is 10−5, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be increased from 13 dB to 20 dB when the tilt angle of the UAV increases from 0 to 5 mrad. An SNR of up to 20 dB is required when the variance of the wind σα2 is 2 mrad. The performance of the in-flight UAV FSO link can be effectively improved through spatial diversity receiving technology. The BER of lower than 10−5 can be obtained just with an SNR of 13 dB if the spatial diversity array with four receivers is used.

Abstract:To mitigate the effects of shadow fading and obstacle blocking, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology to improve the signal transmission quality of wireless communications by controlling the reconfigurable passive elements with less hardware cost and lower power consumption. However, accurate, low-latency and low-pilot-overhead channel state information (CSI) acquisition remains a considerable challenge in RIS-assisted systems due to the large number of RIS passive elements. In this paper, we propose a three-stage joint channel decomposition and prediction framework to acquire CSI. The proposed framework exploits the two-timescale property that the base station (BS)-RIS channel is quasi-static and the RIS-user equipment (UE) channel is fast time-varying. Specifically, in the first stage, we use the full-duplex technique to estimate the channel between a BS's specific antenna and the RIS, addressing the critical scaling ambiguity problem in the channel decomposition. We then design a novel deep neural network, namely, the sparse-connected long short-term memory (SCLSTM), and propose a SCLSTM-based algorithm in the second and third stages, respectively. The algorithm can simultaneously decompose the BS-RIS channel and RIS-UE channel from the cascaded channel and capture the temporal relationship of the RIS-UE channel for prediction. Simulation results show that our proposed framework has lower pilot overhead than the traditional channel estimation algorithms, and the proposed SCLSTM-based algorithm can also achieve more accurate CSI acquisition robustly and effectively.
Deep learning and random light structuring ensure robust free-space communications

Abstract:Having shown early promise, free-space optical communications (FSO) face formidable challenges in the age of information explosion. The ever-growing demand for greater channel communication capacity is one of the challenges. The inter-channel crosstalk, which severely degrades the quality of transmitted information, creates another roadblock in the way of efficient FSO implementation. Here we advance theoretically and realize experimentally a potentially high-capacity FSO protocol that enables high-fidelity transfer of an image, or set of images through a complex environment. In our protocol, we complement random light structuring at the transmitter with a deep learning image classification platform at the receiver. Multiplexing novel, independent, mutually orthogonal degrees of freedom available to structured random light can potentially significantly boost the channel communication capacity of our protocol without introducing any deleterious crosstalk. Specifically, we show how one can multiplex the degrees of freedom associated with the source coherence radius and a spatial position of a beamlet within an array of structured random beams to greatly enhance the capacity of our communication link. The superb resilience of structured random light to environmental noise, as well as extreme efficiency of deep learning networks at classifying images guarantees high-fidelity image transfer within the framework of our protocol.

Abstract:A deep interleaving with forward error correction method was designed and implemented on a 7 km long online experiment. Which interleaving depth is suitable for long‐distance free space optical links was discussed. The experiment results show that the outage probability of the system with deep interleaving can be greatly reduced. Free space optical communication (FSO) has become a popular research direction due to its high bandwidth, easy deployment, and inherent security. Its channel state is unstable because of atmospheric environment, especially in long‐distance ground transmission system. Interleaving combined with forward error correction coding (FEC) have been utilised to improve the stability of system. However, there is little detailed experimental results of deep interleaving combined with FEC under different atmospheric turbulence intensity over long‐distance FSO system. A deep interleaving with FEC method was designed and implemented on a 7 km long online experiment. The performance of different depth interleaving is analysed under weak and strong atmospheric turbulence state. The experiment results show that deep interleaving performs better under weak turbulence for the larger correlation factor of the channel and the outage probability of the system with deep interleaving can be greatly reduced.

Abstract:The bit-error-rate (BER) performance of coherent free-space optical (FSO) links employing phase compensation techniques is investigated in weak non-Kolmogorov turbulence. Assuming that the amplitude fading and phase fluctuation follow lognormal model and Gaussian distribution respectively and using the expression of non-Kolmogorov turbulence in terms of Zernike polynomials, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the coherent receiver is analyzed and as a special case, a new closed-form expression using chi-square distribution is obtained. Thus, the influence of different compensation modes and normalized receiver diameter on BER performance is evaluated and an optimum normalized receiver diameter is suggested to achieve the minimum BER. Moreover, the impact of outer scale L0 and the exponent value α in non-Kolmogorov spectrum is studied with the optimum diameter, which reveals that the BER has an obvious decrease with larger values of L0 and α.

Abstract:To explore the effectiveness of the deep learning-based adaptive optics for free space optical communication (FSO), a method of wavefront correction with the AlexNet-based convolution neural network (CNN) is numerically and experimentally investigated. Based on the theory on the Zernike modes (polynomials) for the Kolmogorov turbulence, wavefront aberrations are statistically constructed to mimic the practically received light beams in the weak and strong turbulence. To evaluate this method, comparison in power penalty of a light beam coupled into a standard single mode fiber between experimental and numerical results is discussed. It is shown that the CNN-based wavefront correction significantly improves the power penalty compared with the traditional methods using the stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) and simulated annealing (SA) algorithms in the strong turbulence. From a number of measured light beams with wavefront aberrations, experimental results indicate that average power penalties of 1.8 dB and 0.8 dB are achieved in the strong and weak turbulence, respectively.

Abstract:The fast and accurate reconstruction of the turbulence phase is crucial for compensating atmospheric disturbances in free-space coherent optical communication. Traditional methods suffer from slow convergence and inadequate phase reconstruction accuracy. This paper introduces a deep learning-based approach for atmospheric turbulence phase reconstruction, utilizing light intensity images affected by turbulence as the basis for feature extraction. The method employs extensive light intensity-phase samples across varying turbulence intensities for training, enabling phase reconstruction from light intensity images. The trained U-Net model reconstructs phases for strong, medium, and weak turbulence with an average processing time of 0.14 s. Simulation outcomes indicate an average loss function value of 0.00027 post-convergence, with a mean squared error of 0.0003 for individual turbulence reconstructions. Experimental validation yields a mean square error of 0.0007 for single turbulence reconstruction. The proposed method demonstrates rapid convergence, robust performance, and strong generalization, offering a novel solution for atmospheric disturbance correction in free-space coherent optical communication.
Anticipating Optical Availability in Hybrid RF/FSO Links Using RF Beacons and Deep Learning

Abstract:Radio frequency (RF) communications offer reliable but low data rates and energy-inefficient satellite links, while free-space optical (FSO) promises high bandwidth but struggles with disturbances imposed by atmospheric effects. A hybrid RF/FSO architecture aims to achieve optimal reliability along with high data rates for space communications. Accurate prediction of dynamic ground-to-satellite FSO link availability is critical for routing decisions in low-earth orbit constellations. In this paper, we propose a system leveraging ubiquitous RF links to proactively forecast FSO link degradation prior to signal drops below threshold levels. This enables pre-calculation of rerouting to maximally maintain high data rate FSO links throughout the duration of weather effects. We implement a supervised learning model to anticipate FSO attenuation based on the analysis of RF patterns. Through the simulation of a dense lower earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, we demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in a simulated satellite network, highlighting the balance between predictive accuracy and prediction duration. An emulated cloud attenuation model is proposed which provides insight into the temporal profiles of RF signals and their correlation to FSO channel dynamics. Our investigation sheds light on the trade-offs between prediction horizon and accuracy arising from RF beacon proximity, achieving a prediction accuracy of 86\% with 16 RF beacons.

Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence technology to improve the performance of free-space optical communication (FSO) systems has received increasing interest. This study aims to propose a novel approach based on deep learning techniques for detecting turbulence-induced distortion levels in FSO communication links. The deep learning-based models improved and fine-tuned in this work are trained using a dataset containing the intensity profiles of Sinusoidal hyperbolic hollow Gaussian beams (ShHGBs). The intensity profiles included in the dataset are the ones of ShHGBs propagating for 6 Km under the influence of six different atmospheric turbulence strengths. This study presents deep learning-based Resnet-50, EfficientNet, MobileNetV2, DenseNet121 and Improved+MobileNetV2 approaches for turbulence-induced disturbance detection and experimental evaluation results. In order to compare the experimental results, an evaluation is made by considering the accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score criteria. As a result of the experimental evaluation, the average values for accuracy, precision, recall and F-score with the best performance of the improved method are given; average accuracy 0.8919, average precision 0.8933, average recall 0.8955 and average F-score 0.8944. The obtained results have immense potential to address the challenges associated with the turbulence effects on the performance of FSO systems.

Abstract:Free space optical communication has become increasingly popular in the past decade due to its terahertz bandwidth, unlicensed spectrum, and enhanced security features. This technology has been attracting significant interest from the network community due to its broad applications in future military and civilian protocols. Recently, the use of orthogonal spatial states of the light field, including those with nonzero orbital angular momentum, has increased communication system capacities and bit-transfer rates per photon. However, atmospheric turbulence disrupts the orthogonal spatial modes over propagation. We present a novel deep learning architecture, cGULnet, to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence on spatial multiplexing of Laguerre–Gaussian structured light modes. The model predicts the phase correction patterns required for an adaptive optical system. It is a U-shaped architecture trained adversarially to a patch discriminator similar to conditional generative adversarial neural-networks. The network is trained for exact phase recovery systems without approximating Zernike polynomials, enabling its use in highly phase-sensitive but high-speed spatial multiplexed communication systems. The proposed architecture can predict the successive three frames in a single shot using the previous ten frames. The method was evaluated for a wide range of beam waist sizes in a simulated Laguerre–Gaussian spatial mode multiplexed 1 km free space optical communication link. We have considered 20 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio, with turbulence conditions parameterized by the refractive index structure parameter of Cn2≤5×10−15m−23 . It was found to reduce the bit error rate to the International Telecommunication Union recommended forward error correction limit of 3.8×10−3 under high turbulence conditions.

Abstract:Recently, free-space optical (FSO) communication systems have gained attention as they pose as a possible solution to cope with the ever-increasing requirements for data transmission. FSO systems have a number of attractive attributes, such as high bandwidth, license-free spectrum, long operational range, security, spatial re-usability, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. On the other hand, optical links suffer from strict pointing and tracking requirements due to narrow beam divergence and channel losses that greatly hinder their reliability. Particularly in the near-Earth satellite optical communications scenario, the atmosphere represents a major challenge to overcome for the establishment of successful and enduring satellite optical links. In that sense, adaptive optics (AO) solutions have been considered for turbulence compensation but given communication requirements solutions are either expensive or sub-optimal. This paper proposes a machine learning-based AO system general framework for atmospheric turbulence compensation. The theoretical foundation for training data generation based on Monte-Carlo phase screens, Zernike polynomials, and optical propagation is presented and validated through simulations. Furthermore, evaluation criteria for the neural network and overall system performance are also discussed.
