Abstract:The performance of partially coherent free-space optical links is investigated in the moderate to strong fluctuation regime of non-Kolmogorov turbulence. The expressions for large-and small-scale log-irradiance flux variance are obtained in non-Kolmogorov turbulence. By employing the gamma-gamma distribution of irradiance fluctuations, the effects of spatial coherence of the source, index of non-Kolmogorov spectrum, and size of the receiver on channel capacity for horizontal links are discussed. Results show that channel capacity presents fluctuating behaviors with the variation of alpha for longer links and increases for alpha values higher than 11/3. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We study the change in the degree of coherence of partially coherent electromagnetic beam (so called electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam). It is shown analytically that with a fixed set of source parameters and under a particular atmospheric turbulence model, an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating through atmospheric turbulence reaches its maximum value of coherence after the beam propagates a particular distance, and the effective width of the spectral degree of coherence also has its maximum value. This phenomenon is independent of the used turbulence model. The results are illustrated by numerical curves.

Abstract:Performance of the direct-detection coherent receiver array for free-space optical (FSO) communications is evaluated with a full-link simulation model. This FSO full-link model (from the transmitter to the receiver) is established based on the phase screen method and the coupling theory by considering the amplitude fading and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Via full-link simulation, bit error rates are evaluated using maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining algorithms based on single-photodetector direct-detection coherent receiver array with different receiver numbers. The improvement of spatial diversity is numerically demonstrated by comparing with the single receiver.

Abstract:The knowledge of atmospheric turbulence is quite imperative for free space optical (FSO) communications. This letter reveals the relationship between spatial and temporal phase fluctuations in an FSO link. We demonstrate that the phase fluctuation is an ergodic process in stationary and homogeneous turbulence. On the basis of wave structure which sets up a bridge between spatial and temporal phase characteristics, we theoretically derive the power spectrum and the autocorrelation function which predict the conditions of ergodicity. A series of experiments were carried out to test theoretical predictions where coordinate optical phase was measured for a wide range of turbulent strengths. As a result, we show that both the temporal and spatial phase spectra have low-pass characteristics and both their average and autocorrelation show ergodic behavior, following the same law with the variation of turbulent strength. This letter indicates that the spatial and temporal statistics of phase fluctuations could be interconverted for free-space optical communication and other applications related to the propagation of optical signals in the atmosphere.

Abstract:The bit-error-rate (BER) performance of coherent free-space optical (FSO) links employing phase compensation techniques is investigated in weak non-Kolmogorov turbulence. Assuming that the amplitude fading and phase fluctuation follow lognormal model and Gaussian distribution respectively and using the expression of non-Kolmogorov turbulence in terms of Zernike polynomials, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the coherent receiver is analyzed and as a special case, a new closed-form expression using chi-square distribution is obtained. Thus, the influence of different compensation modes and normalized receiver diameter on BER performance is evaluated and an optimum normalized receiver diameter is suggested to achieve the minimum BER. Moreover, the impact of outer scale L0 and the exponent value α in non-Kolmogorov spectrum is studied with the optimum diameter, which reveals that the BER has an obvious decrease with larger values of L0 and α.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-speed free-space optical (FSO) transmission over 1 km using 20 Gbit/s advanced coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagram and the bit error rate (BER) are measured. The receiving sensitivity of the FSO transmission is about-23.9 dBm at the BER of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:Due to the complexity of low-altitude atmospheric channel conditions, the commercial application of FSO communication systems is less prevalent than satellite applications. This is mainly because there is a trade-off between achieving system stability through active compensation technology and maintaining low costs. Different application scenarios and atmospheric channel states correspond to different optimal structural parameter selections, which is crucial for low-cost FSO systems without complex compensation mechanisms. Therefore, measuring actual channel conditions is essential. One existing issue is that current research does not sufficiently discuss the connection between theoretical analysis and practical experiments in FSO communication, thus, establishing models and analysis methods is necessary that can accurately predict the performance of actual FSO atmospheric communication systems. We have developed a comprehensive FSO model to evaluate the effects of channel and structural factors on system performance. This model is vital for cost-effective parameter selection in system design and for analyzing actual system performance. Additionally, we established 6.6 km and 12.7 km FSO transmission links in an urban low-altitude environment. Subsequently, we conducted tests on atmospheric attenuation, channel statistical characteristics, and DPSK/QPSK coherent communication performance. Based on the analysis that combines experiments with theory, we have deduced the atmospheric attenuation of FSO links. The channel statistical characteristics provided the statistical properties of the two links under weak, moderate, and strong turbulence, along with fitting curves. Long-term channel statistical experiments indicate that the channel is most stable during the early morning hours of the day, and the 12.7 km communication experiment without turbulence correction technology is only feasible at this time. Furthermore, we presented a method for using theory to evaluate the performance of actual FSO systems in random atmospheric channels.

Experimental Research of Angle-of-arrival Fluctuations in Free-Space Optical Communications

Abstract:A 24 h experimental measurement for angleof-arrival fluctuations on a 3.2 km line-of-sight link in Harbin was carried out over a three-month period in 2006.In the experiment,the measurement over a 10 s period at a high sampling rate of 1 kHz was carried out per min,and the angle-of-arrival experimental data which contained the frequency range of 0.2~500 Hz were achieved.Angle-of-arrival fluctuations and its time-averaging effects were studied experimentally and theoretically.The experimental results provide information on the characteristics of angle-of-arrival fluctuations,which can provide important information for the design of free-space optical links.The results show that the intensity of the angle-of-arrival fluctuation in the haze weather and low visibility is smaller than that in the clear-air weather and high visibility.In strong regime,the saturation effects of angle-of-arrival fluctuations occur,while in weak regime,the intensity of the angle-ofarrival fluctuation boosts up with the increase of the turbulence and falls down with the increase of the exposure time.The calculated results of the time-averaging factor are in good agreement with the experimental results.
The Comparison of Two Methods of Measuring Atmospheric Coherent Length

Abstract:The atmospheric coherent length is an important parameter when study the influence of atmosphere to the light propagation. Two kinds of methods are often used to measure the coherent length. One method uses the optical technique, measures the arrive angle of star objects, another method uses the balloon born thermal-meters, which can get profile of structure constants of refractive index, and then the coherent length can be calculated from the integral of structure constants of refractive index.Because the time scale and space scale are different in these two methods, the results of them are different. Although the magnitude of results is near. In this paper, a new way to compare the results of two methods above is advised. It is based on the characters of the structure constants of refractive index, and the profile data of balloon born instrument. Not only the average coherent length can be gained, and also the distribution of coherent length can be estimated. So the results of two methods can be compared quite well. The characters of coherent length are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:An 11.8km optical link is established to examine the intensity fluctuation of the laser beam transmission through atmosphere turbulence. Probability density function, fade statistic, and high-frequency spectrum are researched based on the analysis of the experimental data collected in each season of a year, including both weak and strong fluctuation cases. Finally, the daily variation curve of scintillation index is given, compared with the variation of refractive-index structure parameter C(n) (2), which is calculated from the experimental data of angle of arrival. This work provides the experimental results that are helpful to the atmospheric propagation research and the free-space optical communication system design.

Abstract:The random fluctuation characteristics of the atmospheric turbulence coherence length and the light beam propagation far field Strehl ratio were analyzed and their probability density functions were derived based on the characteristic function of random variable. In the experimental setup a He-Ne laser with wavelength of 0.6328 micrometer and transmission beam diameter of 30mm was used as main laser, and a water pool was used to simulate the convective turbulence. The theoretical analysis is validated by the experimental results.

Abstract:The heterodyne efficiency of a coherent free-space optical (FSO) communication model under the effects of atmospheric turbulence and misalignment is studied in this paper. To be more general, both the transmitted beam and local oscillator beam are assumed to be partially coherent based on the Gaussian Schell model (GSM). By using the derived analytical form of the cross-spectral function of a GSM beam propagating through atmospheric turbulence, a closed-form expression of heterodyne efficiency is derived, assuming that the propagation directions for the transmitted and local oscillator beams are slightly different. Then the impacts of atmospheric turbulence, configuration of the two beams (namely, beam radius and spatial coherence width), detector radius, and misalignment angle over heterodyne efficiency are examined. Numerical results suggest that the beam radius of the two overlapping beams can be optimized to achieve a maximum heterodyne efficiency according to the turbulence conditions and the detector radius. It is also found that atmospheric turbulence conditions will significantly degrade the efficiency of heterodyne detection, and compared to fully coherent beams, partially coherent beams are less sensitive to the changes in turbulence conditions and more robust against misalignment at the receiver.

Abstract:We investigate the accumulative effect of the phase measurement errors in characterizing optical multipath components by low-coherence interferometry. The accumulative effect is caused by the fluctuation of the environment temperature, which leads to the variation of the refractive index of the device under test. The resulting phase measurement errors accumulate with the increasing of the phase difference between the two interferometer arms. Our experiments were carried out to demonstrate that the accumulative effect is still obvious even though the thermo-optical coefficient of the device under test is quite small. Shortening the measurement time to reduce the fluctuation of the environment temperature can effectively restrain the accumulative effect. The experiments show that when the scanning speed increases to 4.8 mm/s, the slope of the phase measurement errors decreases to 5.52 x 10(-8), which means the accumulative effect can be ignored. Abstract:Numerical simulation has advantages over theoretical and experimental research of controllable parameters and realizing ensemble average. Therefore, numerical simulation can be used to study the influence of atmospheric turbulence in big elevation link and other fields which can't be built in experimental system. Using Zernike polynomial method and multi-layer phase screen theory, the atmospheric multi-layer phase screen model is established. The numerical simulations of Gaussian beam propagating in horizontal link (0°) and big elevation link (30°, 60°) are achieved. Using the empirical formula for the variance of angle of arrival (AOA) fluctuations in horizontal link, the results of three groups of 900 times numerical simulation in horizontal link are analyzed. The results show that the error of variances of AOA fluctuations between simulation and experimental values is within 5%, and this model is effective. This work is important for studying the influence of atmospheric turbulence in free-space optical communication system.

Abstract:In coherent optical communication, the application of linearly polarized light can greatly improve communication sensitivity and communication capacity. However, when a laser transmits in an inferior atmospheric layer, the polarization character is influenced by atmospheric turbulence. This study proposes a measurement experiment of the characteristics of linearly polarized light over an 11.16-km turbulent path. We also present a theoretical approach and its operation for investigating the polarization characteristics of a laser. The variations of polarization under different atmosphere link distances and turbulence intensities are also discussed. The experimental results were in agreement with the theoretical analysis results. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the effect of atmospheric turbulence on polarization direction is stronger than that of atmospheric turbulence on the polarization state. This work will benefit coherent free-space optical communication system design efforts.

Abstract:A deep interleaving with forward error correction method was designed and implemented on a 7 km long online experiment. Which interleaving depth is suitable for long‐distance free space optical links was discussed. The experiment results show that the outage probability of the system with deep interleaving can be greatly reduced. Free space optical communication (FSO) has become a popular research direction due to its high bandwidth, easy deployment, and inherent security. Its channel state is unstable because of atmospheric environment, especially in long‐distance ground transmission system. Interleaving combined with forward error correction coding (FEC) have been utilised to improve the stability of system. However, there is little detailed experimental results of deep interleaving combined with FEC under different atmospheric turbulence intensity over long‐distance FSO system. A deep interleaving with FEC method was designed and implemented on a 7 km long online experiment. The performance of different depth interleaving is analysed under weak and strong atmospheric turbulence state. The experiment results show that deep interleaving performs better under weak turbulence for the larger correlation factor of the channel and the outage probability of the system with deep interleaving can be greatly reduced.

Abstract:Space coherent optical communication technology is considered a significant approach for overcoming the current bottleneck in high-speed space communication; yet, atmospheric turbulence severely restricts its implementation. This paper first investigated the random distribution characteristics of the amplitude and phase of a Gaussian beam after it is transmitted through atmospheric turbulence based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle and the low-frequency compensation power spectrum inversion method. Then, using the coherent mixing efficiency and communication bit error rate model, the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the performance of spatial coherent optical communication systems is obtained; Finally, a laser heterodyne detection experimental system was built to quantitatively study the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the coherent detection performance of spatial coherent optical communication. The conclusions of this study are as follows: 1.The spatial phase distortion caused by the weak turbulence channel is relatively small and will hardly affect the light intensity distribution characteristics of the Gaussian beam. In the case of weak turbulence, the impact of weak turbulence on the performance of coherent optical communication systems is almost negligible. The communication bit error rate will decrease rapidly as the number of single bit data photons increases. The communication signal-to-noise ratio can be ensured to be better than 10-5 when the number of single-bit photons is greater than 10. 2.Moderate turbulence will change the intensity distribution characteristics of the Gaussian beam, but will not cause a serious shift in the center of the spot. Under moderate turbulence conditions, the coherent mixing efficiency decreases rapidly as the turbulence intensity continues to increase, but the communication bit error rate still decreases rapidly as the number of single bit data photons increases. At this time, increasing the number of single-bit photons can suppress the negative impact of moderate intensity turbulence on the performance of coherent optical communication systems. 3.Strong turbulence will cause severe spatial phase distortion of the beam, destroy the consistency of the light intensity distribution, and cause a serious shift in the center of the spot. Under strong turbulence conditions, the coherent mixing efficiency of coherent optical communication systems approaches zero, and increasing the number of single bit data photons cannot significantly reduce the bit error rate, seriously affecting the quality of coherent optical communication. Atmospheric turbulence is an important limiting factor for the development of space coherent optical communication, and this study can provide useful references for the performance evaluation of space coherent optical communication systems.

Abstract:We analyze the performance of a coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system and a serial decode and forward relay transmission multihop coherent free-space optical OFDM system using an exponential distribution atmospheric turbulence model under the circumstance of strong atmospheric turbulence. The attenuation of the atmospheric channel fading model mainly considers the light intensity scintillation caused by atmospheric turbulence and interaction between the path consumption, the transmitter and the receiver. The OFDM signal mapping method uses quadrature amplitude modulation. We also derive the formulas of the outage probability and symbol error rate of the coherent OFDM and multihop system, respectively, under the conditions described above. In addition, a simulation is performed, which is essential to evaluate the influence of key factors including coherent detection in a number of relay nodes, the mapping orders, and the number of subcarriers, which have a significant effect on the outage performance and the bit error performance of the OFDM-FSO system under the strong atmospheric turbulence.
