Abstract:Quantum computing technologies have become a hot topic in academia and industry receiving much attention and financial support from all sides. Building a quantum computer that can be used practically is in itself an outstanding challenge that has become the ‘new race to the moon’. Next to researchers and vendors of future computing technologies, national authorities are showing strong interest in maturing this technology due to its known potential to break many of today’s encryption techniques, which would have significant and potentially disruptive impact on our society. It is, however, quite likely that quantum computing has beneficial impact on many computational disciplines. In this article we describe our vision of future developments in scientific computing that would be enabled by the advent of software-programmable quantum computers. We thereby assume that quantum computers will form part of a hybrid accelerated computing platform like GPUs and co-processor cards do today. In particular, we address the potential of quantum algorithms to bring major breakthroughs in applied mathematics and its applications. Finally, we give several examples that demonstrate the possible impact of quantum-accelerated scientific computing on society.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of the history, theoretical basis, and different implementations of quantum computers. In Fall 2018, four MIT faculty -- Isaac Chuang, Dirk Englund, Aram Harrow, and William Oliver -- at the forefront of quantum computation and information research were interviewed. They provided personal perspectives on the development of the field, as well as insight to its near-term trajectory. There has been a lot of recent media hype surrounding quantum computation, so in this article we present an academic view of the matter, specifically highlighting progress being made at MIT.

Abstract:This is a brief review of the experimental and theoretical quantum computing. The hopes for eventually building a useful quantum computer rely entirely on the so-called "threshold theorem". In turn, this theorem is based on a number of assumptions, treated as axioms, i.e. as being satisfied exactly. Since in reality this is not possible, the prospects of scalable quantum computing will remain uncertain until the required precision, with which these assumptions should be approached, is established. Abstract:To overcome the scaling limitations of conventional semiconductor chips, quantum computing has emerged and experienced significant growth in recent years. Compared to classical computing, this technology can provide exponential acceleration in the field of ultra-large-scale parallel computing. Consequently, its practical application is anticipated to have profound impacts on information and related technologies. The paper employs a comparative analysis approach to systematically examine the research progress of quantum computer technology. Specifically, the study emphasizes the analysis and consolidation of various quantum computing technology routes, critically evaluates their advantages and disadvantages, and provides a foresight into their future development trends. Currently, research on quantum computing technology is in its early stages and is evolving rapidly. Multiple technical paths are being pursued, resulting in a diverse and competitive landscape that is expected to persist in the short term, as it will take some time before the practical application of quantum computers becomes feasible.

Abstract:The extraordinary advance in quantum computation leads us to believe that, in the not-too-distant future, quantum systems will surpass classical systems. Moreover, the field’s rapid growth has resulted in the development of many critical tools, including programmable machines (quantum computers) that execute quantum algorithms and the burgeoning field of quantum machine learning, which investigates the possibility of faster computation than traditional machine learning. In this paper, we provide a thorough examination of quantum computing from the perspective of a physicist. The purpose is to give laypeople and scientists a broad but in-depth understanding of the area. We also recommend charts that summarize the field’s diversions to put the whole field into context.

Abstract:Quantum computing exposes the brilliance of quantum mechanics through computer science and, as such, gives oneself a marvelous and exhilarating journey to go through. This article leads along that journey with a historical and current outlook on quantum computation that is geared toward computer experts but also to experts from other disciplines as well. It is an article that will bridge the vast gap between classical and quantum computation and open an entering wedge through which one will be able to both bring himself up to speed on quantum computation and, intrinsically, in a straightforward manner, become acquainted with it. We are indeed in luck to be living in an age where computing is being reinvented, and not only seeing history in the making firsthand but, in fact, having the opportunity to be the ones who are reinventing--and that is quite a thought.

Abstract:The theory of classical universal computation was laid down in 1936, was implemented within a decade, became commercial within another decade, and dominated the world's economy half a century later. This success story relied on the progress in technology. As computers become faster they must become smaller. The history of computer technology has involved a sequence of changes from one type of physical realisation to another, with smaller and smaller components. The unavoidable step to the quantum level will be one in this sequence; but it promises something more exciting as well. It can support entirely new modes of computation that do not have classical analogues. There is so much potential in this fundamentally new way of harnessing nature that it appears as though the age of computation has not yet even begun!

Abstract:Moore’s law will cease to be relevant once transistors are the size of electrons. Once this occurs, we will no longer be able to use silicon for technological advancement. However, breakthroughs will continue in the form of a sixth paradigm: a 3D molecular computing model such as quantum comput- ing. Some of the promising areas of quantum computing researched in this study are (i) algorithmic advancements - such as Shor’s, Grover’s, error correction, fault tolerance and other new algorithms; (ii) hardware - such as the quantum system architecture, circuit models, entanglement, superposition and no-cloning qubits; (iii) market segments - such as finance, healthcare, and chemistry; (iv) the supremacy established over classical computing; and (v) areas of applicability. Significant progress has been made in these areas in recent decades, and they have garnered immense interest, attention and the funding required to make good progress.

Abstract:The recent development of quantum computing, which uses entanglement, superposition, and other quantum fundamental concepts, can provide substantial processing advantages over traditional computing. These quantum features help solve many complex problems that cannot be solved otherwise with conventional computing methods. These problems include modeling quantum mechanics, logistics, chemical-based advances, drug design, statistical science, sustainable energy, banking, reliable communication, and quantum chemical engineering. The last few years have witnessed remarkable progress in quantum software and algorithm creation and quantum hardware research, which has significantly advanced the prospect of realizing quantum computers. It would be helpful to have comprehensive literature research on this area to grasp the current status and find outstanding problems that require considerable attention from the research community working in the quantum computing industry. To better understand quantum computing, this paper examines the foundations and vision based on current research in this area. We discuss cutting-edge developments in quantum computer hardware advancement and subsequent advances in quantum cryptography, quantum software, and high-scalability quantum computers. Many potential challenges and exciting new trends for quantum technology research and development are highlighted in this paper for a broader debate.

The primary question addressed in this review is: What is the current progress and potential applications of quantum computing? The review encompasses a wide range of major studies conducted in the field of quantum computing. It explores the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics that underlie quantum computing, including superposition and entanglement. Various quantum computing architectures, such as gate-based quantum computers and adiabatic quantum computers, are discussed, along with their advantages and limitations. Abstract:The field of advanced computing applications could experience a significant impact from quantum computing, which is a rapidly developing field with the potential to revolutionize numerous areas of science and technology. In this review, we explore into the various ways in which complex computational problems could be tackled by utilizing quantum computers, including machine learning, optimization, and simulation. One potential application of quantum computers is in machine learning, where they could be used to improve the accuracy and efficiency of algorithms. Complex optimization problems, such as those encountered in logistics and finance, can be addressed using quantum computers as well. Furthermore, the utilization of quantum computers could enable the simulation of intricate systems, such as molecules and materials, leading to significant applications in fields like Physics and Material Technology. Abstract:Classical and quantum information are very different. Together they can perform feats that neither could achieve alone, such as quantum computing, quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation. Some of the applications range from helping to preventing spies from reading private communications. Among the tools that will facilitate their implementation, we note quantum purification and quantum error correction. Although some of these ideas are still beyond the grasp of current technology, quantum cryptography has been implemented and the prospects are encouraging for small-scale prototypes of quantum computation devices before the end of the millennium.

Abstract:As computers become faster they must become smaller because of the finiteness of the speed of light. If computers are to continue to become smaller, new, quantum technology must replace or supplement what we have now, but it turns out that quantum physics can offer much more than smaller and faster microprocessors. It can support entirely new modes of computation, with new quantum algorithms that do not have classical analogues. Moreover, recent progress in the quantum theory of computation forces us to question the classical view of computation as a purely logical notion independent of that of computation as a physical process. We provide a brief overview of these new developments which may lead to a significant revision of our understanding of the nature of computation.

Abstract:Quantum computation, as part of the broader field of quantum information, represents an assembly of concepts and techniques that concern the nature and processing of information based on quantum mechanics. Quantum computation utilizes unique resources such as quantum superposition and quantum entanglement to encode and process information and has been proved to be dominantly advantageous over classical computation on certain important scientific and engineering problems. Potential applications of quantum computation are expected to influence future information technology and many other related fields deeply and significantly. In this article, we briefly review the history of quantum computation, including how its fundamental ideas and concepts came into being and the development of its significant theories and algorithms. We also discuss the status and outlook of several representative technical routes in this field, including superconducting quantum computation, distributed superconducting quantum computation, photonic quantum computation, trapped-ion quantum computation, silicon-based quantum computation, as well as other systems. Furthermore, by analyzing certain common issues faced by all routes, we propose some thoughts and suggestions for future development of quantum computation in China. We particularly emphasize the following: reinforcement of strategic planning at a national level, establishment of a research team of high caliber, and boost of relevant fundamental research and development of core techniques and critical instruments.

Abstract:Quantum computing promises to help humanity solve problems that would otherwise be intractable on classical computers. Unlike today's machines, quantum computers use a novel computing process that leverages the foundational quantum mechanical laws of nature. This unlocks unparalleled compute power for certain applications and promises to help solve some of our generation's gravest challenges, including the climate crisis, food insecurity, and widespread disease. No one entity will be able to realize this end state alone. Developing a fault-tolerant quantum supercomputer and a vibrant ecosystem around it will require deep partnerships between industry, governments, and academia. It will also require collective action to enable and promote positive applications of quantum computing and ensure that the safe and responsible use of the technology is at the center of its development and deployment. Achieving these objectives will require focusing on three priorities:

Abstract:Quantum Computing observed a significant rise to public and technologies in past three decades, the reason behind for the development of quantum computing is to solve various problems which are so complex that traditional (classical) computers were not able to solve. New technologies, hardware components and software advancements are being discovered all around the world in order to use this powerful tool. But in addition to the development of technologies and the attempt to scale up the quantum computers, new challenges and problems too came in light which makes it tough for further progress in the quest to unlock the true development of quantum computers. Various methods has been identified for Quantum Information Processing (QIP), but the error rates were more than what we would expect often resulting in inappropriate computations which eventually gives inaccurate conclusions.In this work, we discuss about the prominent hardware and software methods to build the quantum computers with low error rates and better accuracy, we will look onto the topics related to qubits and its principles which are incorporated in Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) which govern the working of quantum computers, the topics of quantum algorithms and its methodology are also been discussed to provide a clear understanding of the manipulation of qubits according to the purpose needed. In addition to that we will talk about the applications like quantum teleportation and cryptography which utilizes the quantum computers, and discuss about the future enhancements which can be done using this technology.

Abstract:Although the current information revolution is still unfolding, the next industrial revolution is already rearing its head. A second quantum revolution based on quantum technology will power this new industrial revolution with quantum computers as its engines. The development of quantum computing will turn quantum theory into quantum technology, hence release the power of quantum phenomena, and exponentially accelerate the progress of science and technology. Building a large-scale quantum computing is at the juncture of science and engineering. Even if large-scale quantum computers become reality, they cannot make the conventional computers obsolete soon. Building a large-scale quantum computer is a daunting complex engineering problem to integrate ultra-low temperature with room temperature and micro-world with macro-world. We have built hundreds of physical qubits already but are still working on logical and topological qubits. Since physical qubits cannot tolerate errors, they cannot be used to perform long precise calculations to solve practically useful problems yet.

Abstract:High-energy physics is facing a daunting computing challenge with the large amount of data expected from the HL-LHC and other future colliders. In addition, the landscape of computation has been expanding dramatically with technologies beyond the standard x86 CPU architecture becoming increasingly available. Both of these factors necessitate an extensive and broad-ranging research and development campaign. As quantum computation has been evolving rapidly over the past few years, it is important to evaluate how quantum computation could be one potential avenue for development for future collider experiments. A wide variety of applications have been considered by different authors. We review here selected applications of quantum computing to high-energy physics, including topics in simulation, reconstruction, and the use of machine learning, and their challenges. In addition, recent advances in quantum computing technology to enhance such applications are briefly highlighted. Finally, we will discuss how such applications might transform the workflows of future collider experiments and highlight other potential applications.
