Abstract:Transient electronics are becoming a hot topic due to the rapid development of bioelectronics, self-destructive devices and environmental sensors. This letter reports a novel scheme for triggering degradation of 250 μm-thick Mg target using acetic acid regarding transient electronics applications. The triggered transience has also been demonstrated using commercial vinegar. To achieve programmable transience as well as device protection, polypropylene carbonate (PPC) was investigated as passivation layer. The proposed method has demonstrated simplicity, high safety, low cost and low trigger temperature.

Abstract:Physically transient electronics, which can disappear under certain conditions in aqueous solutions or biofluids, has attracted increasing attention because of its potential applications as "green" electronics and biomedical devices. Till now, the excitation of the transient process is achieved by passive dissolution of the encapsulation layer, which has a very limited control over the process. Here, we report a novel light-triggered encapsulation strategy via a bilayer of a light-responsive hydrogel and oxide to control the degradation on demand in aqueous environment. The hydrogel serving as a barrier between the environment and oxide limited the water's movement and penetration, leading to improved stable operation time. More importantly, the light-responsive hydrogel underwent a gel-to-solution transition upon applying ultraviolet (UV) light. The drastic change of the water movement enabled a transient process triggered on demand. Via this encapsulation scheme, we demonstrated fully soluble resistors and resistive random access memory devices with the UV light-triggered transient process. This work provides a new pathway to design transient devices with controllable degradation to meet various requirements of green electronics and biomedical devices.

Abstract:Transient electronics is an emerging technology that enables unique functional transformation or the physical disappearance of electronic devices, and is attracting increasing attention for potential applications in data secured hardware as an ultimate solution against data breaches. Developing smart triggered degradation modalities of silicon (Si) remain the key challenge to achieve advanced non-recoverable on-demand transient electronics. Here, we present a novel electrochemically triggered transience mechanism of Si by lithiation, allowing complete and controllable destruction of Si devices. The depth and microstructure of the lithiation-affected zone over time is investigated in detail and the results suggest a few hours of lithiation is sufficient to create microcracks and significantly promote lithium penetration. Finite element models are proposed to confirm the mechanism. Electrochemically triggered degradation of thin film Si ribbons and Si integrated circuit chips with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors from a commercial 0.35 micrometer complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology node is performed to demonstrate the potential applications for commercial electronics. This work opens new opportunities for versatile triggered transience of Si-based devices for critical secured information systems and green consumer electronics.

Abstract:Emerging transient electronics capable of complete physical and chemical disintegration are derived from advanced materials and device design strategies. The area of exploring on-demand smart transient electronics has seen continuous development, allowing for the degradation process to be triggered or controlled through an instantaneous stimulus, thus offering significant potential in data security, undetectable spying, and bioresorbable electronics applications. In this article, we summarize recent progress in the design and strategies of on-demand smart transient electronics and emphasize the basic principles of selecting, processing, and integrating materials. After an introduction to the history and properties of triggered transient electronics, we discuss on-demand smart transient electronics based on their triggering stimuli, strategies for designing thermal, optical, or electrical triggers, and future development trends and challenges.

This paper reports a type of destructive electronics which features fast transience from chemical dissolution on-demand triggered in an electrochemical-mechanical manner. The detailed materials, mechanics, and device construction of the destructive electronics are presented. Experiment and analysis of the triggered releasing and transience study of electronic materials, resistors and metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors illustrate the key aspects of the destructive electronics. Abstract:Data security risks of unauthorized access of confidential information have attracted considerable attention. Transient electronics capable of physical disappearance or disintegration upon external stimuli could potentially offer an alternative solution at the device level. Despite great advances, smart, efficient, wireless, and nonrecoverable degradation of foundry-compatible silicon (Si)-integrated circuit (IC) chips remains a challenge. Herein, a laser-triggered degradation of Si circuits by lithiation and moisture uptake is proposed. By integrating IC chips with a small amount of lithium sources and a fluidic reservoir consisting of hygroscopic materials, on-demand, wireless, rapid, and complete degradation of Si IC chips built at 600 nm node is achieved upon activation by laser irradiation. This work paves a new route to accomplish smart, tether-free, and thorough degradation of devices compatible with existing foundry processes, offering an essential baseline for the development of intelligent transient electronics for secured hardware.

Abstract:A multi‐layers transient device combination of fluidic liquid metal, low melt point paraffin wax, and paraffin wax composite, toward application as quick response, integrate transience and recycling, simple process, on‐demand transient electronics. The emergent transient electronics that can be destroyed or degraded harmlessly under an environmental stimulus are attracting extensive attentions toward eco‐friendly electronic devices and confidential communication applications. However, currently available transient electronics are limited by the poor recyclability of components, which fails to meet the ever‐increasing demands of advanced electronic devices. Here, this work reports a fully recyclable transient electronic device based on a multi‐layered architecture, comprising a liquid metal (LM) as the conductor and a NaOH solution‐embedded paraffin composite (NPC) as the degradation agent. Upon thermally triggered by the bottom heater, the middle‐layer LM circuit and the top NPC layer melt, releasing the aqueous alkali to destroy the circuit at a quick transient rate (46 ± 4 s). Afterward, both the free LM and paraffin are recycled at extremely high efficiencies, that is, 98% for LM owing to the self‐aggregation and fluidic nature, 95% for paraffin arising from the low melting point and good recoverability. The successful integration of transience and recycling abilities dramatically improves the feasibility of transient electronics in real applications, as further demonstrated in a radio‐frequency transmission device and a remote destructible memristor, which hold great promises for confidential data storage devices and next‐generation electronics.

Abstract:Precise control of the life cycle of materials has become critical. Long-lasting materials are not always the best—for example, nondegradable plastic waste is now a serious environmental problem. Transient electronic devices have a prescribed life cycle in which all or part of the device can physically dissolve, disappear, or degrade after their utility ends. This concept creates compelling opportunities for biodegradable temporary, implantable electronics that do not require removal; environmentally benign biodegradable electronics with zero waste; and security hardware with on-time system destruction. Nanoscale materials provide new uses for transient materials dissolution by scaling up the rate of degradation; for example, a microscale Si single crystal is not dissoluble, but at around 100 nm, the Si single crystal dissolves in approximately one month. Significant advances have been made in exploring transient, water-soluble, and biodegradable nano-/micromaterials, and their degradation chemistry and kinetics. Advancing the state of the art in transient electronics requires contributions from many disciplines of materials science ranging from materials analysis to applications. This article outlines the history of transient electronics and briefly overviews concepts and issues from inorganic- and organic-based electronic materials, process technology, and energy devices to trigger transient electronics.

Abstract:The key to protect sensitive information stored in electronic memory devices from disclosure is to develop transient electronic devices that are capable of being destroyed quickly in an emergency. By using a highly water-soluble polythiophene-conjugated polyelectrolyte PTT-NMI+Br- as an active material, which was synthesized by the reaction of poly[thiophene-alt-4,4-bis(6-bromohexyl)-4H-cyclopenta(1,2-b:5,4-b ')dithiophene] with N-methylimidazole, a flexible electronic device, Al/PTT- NMI+Br-/ITO-coated PET (ITO: indium tin oxide; PET: polyethylene terephthalate), is successfully fabricated. This device shows a typical nonvolatile rewritable resistive random access memory (RRAM) effect at a sweep voltage range of +/- 3 V and a history-dependent memristive switching performance at a small sweep voltage range of +/- 1 V. Both the learning/memorizing functions and the synaptic potentiation/depression of biological systems have been emulated. The switching mechanism for the PTT-NMI+Br--based electronic device may be highly associated with ion migration under bias. Once water is added to this device, it will be destructed rapidly within 20 s due to the dissolution of the active layer. This device is not only a typical transient device but can also be used for constructing conventional memristors with long-term stability after electronic packaging. Furthermore, the soluble active layer in the device can be easily recycled from its aqueous solution and reused for fabricating new transient memristors. This work offers a train of new thoughts for designing and constructing a neuromorphic computing system that can be quickly destroyed with water in the near future.

Abstract:Transient electronics is an emerging class of electronics that has attracted a lot of attention because of its potential as an environmental-friendly alternative to the existing end-of-life product disposal or treatments. However, the controlled degradation of transient electronics under environmentally benign conditions remains a challenge. In this work, the tunable degradation of transient electronics including passive resistor devices and active memory devices was realized by photodegradable thin polymer films comprising fullerene derivatives, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl esters (PCBM). The photodegradation of polymer:PCBM under an aqueous environment is triggered by ultraviolet (UV) light. Experimental results demonstrate that the addition of PCBM in commodity polymers, including but not limited to polystyrene, results in a catalytic effect on polymer photodegradation when triggered by UV light. The degradation mechanism of transient electronics is ascribed to the photodegradation of polymer:PCBM encapsulation layers caused by the synergistic effect between UV and water exposure. The polymer:PCBM encapsulation system presented herein offers a simple way to achieve the realization of light-triggered device degradation for bioapplication and expands the material options for tailorable degradation of transient electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Using degradable metals and metal oxides as electrodes or interconnecting wires, Si and SiO 2 as semiconductor or dielectric layers, and degradable materials as base films or encapsulation protective layers, the physical form of transient electronic devices is partially damaged or completely disappeared by the corresponding degradation mode triggered by external stimuli, after performing specified functions or discarding them. This paper combs the practical needs of transient electronic in environmental protection, health care, information security, etc. and comprehensively analyzes the proposed process of transient electronic concepts. The current research status and development trend of Transient Electronics are discussed from three aspects: biocompatibility, full material degradation and controllable degradation. In the end, the article looks forward to the future development and application prospects of transient electronic.

Abstract:Transient electronics have dramatically changed inner-body therapy in health care. They stand out because of their harmless dissolution in the human body with no lingering electronic trash. However, high-precision biomedical implants require programmable and serial remedy operations, and controlling the whole-device destruction is not proactive and precise. Thus, a novel biotriggered and temperature-controlled transient electronics fabrication method using elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) as triggers is proposed. Biocompatible ELPs simply mixed with trace silver nanowire (AgNW) can serve as the "switch" for the electronics to respond to local temperature changes in deionized water, exhibiting an agile response time. A ratio gradient experiment of the ELPs and AgNW shows that more programmable and precise transience properties (initial resistance, ready time, response time, and stable resistance) can be achieved by using a designated proportion. Further, we validated that the 3D-printing-based ELP-triggering transient electronics fabrication method is very simple yet effective for preparing transient wireless charging LEDs. Transient devices comprising ELPs-AgNW and PLGA-Ag respond within 160 s below 10 °C and degrade within a certain period.

Abstract:An advanced transient approach enables the sudden degradation and subsequent disappearance of device-grade electronic systems on a temporary platform with limited remains over a desired period for long-term stable operation. To satisfy the requirements for flexible devices in transient electronics capable of working at high temperature, transient Si-nanomembrane (Si-NM) electronics integrated with high-temperature degradable poly-alpha-methylstyrene (PAMS) are presented. Systematic experimental studies suggest that a 4 mu m thick PAMS interlayer in the Si-NM device ensures stable operation below the decomposition temperature of PAMS (approximate to 300 degrees C), while the device undergoes transient process when triggered at higher temperature. Experimental characterization and theoretical modeling reveal the essential properties of the flexible device and its failure mechanism. Demonstrations of such a transient component in high-temperature electronics highlight the potential advantages in the demands for circuit safeguards, information security, and sensing/control systems.

Abstract:Reactive dissolution and its effects on electrical conduction, morphological change and chemical transformation in thin films of Mg, AZ31B Mg alloy, Zn, Fe, W, and Mo in de‐ionized (DI) water and simulated body fluids (Hanks’ solution pH 5–8) are systematically studied, to assess the potential for use of these metals in water‐soluble, that is, physically "transient", electronics. The results indicate that the electrical dissolution rates in thin films can be much different that traditionally reported corrosion rates in corresponding bulk materials. Silicon metal oxide field effect transistors (MOSFETs) built with these metals demonstrate feasibility for use in transient electronics.

Abstract:Transient devices have attracted extensive interest because they allow changes in physical form and device function under the control of external stimuli or related commands and have very broad application prospects for information security, biomedical care and the environment. Transient bioelectrical devices were fabricated inspired by a silkworm moth breaking out of its cocoon, which has shown many advantages, including the use of mild stimulation, biocompatible materials, a simple process, and a universal strategy. For the fabrication of the transient devices, heat-sensitive microspheres with a 9.3 mol L-1 LiBr solution in wax shells were prepared by microfluidic technology, which were then assembled into silk fibroin (SF) electronic materials/devices, such as SF conductive film, an LED circuit on SF film, and a Ag/SF film/Pt/SF film memristor. The contribution from the LiBr/wax microspheres to the transient time of the SF films upon exposure to heat was quantitatively investigated. This approach was applied to transiently dissolve a flexible Ag-nanowire resistance circuit line on a SF substrate. Moreover, memristors constructed with a functional layer of SF were destroyed by melting the LiBr/wax microspheres. This technique paves the way for realizing transient bioelectrical devices inspired by biological behavior, which have been well optimized by nature via evolution.

Abstract:Transient electronics is a class of technology that involves components which physically disappear, in whole or in part, at prescribed rates and at programmed times. Enabled devices include medical monitors that fully resorb when implanted into the human body (bio-resorbable) to avoid long-term adverse effects, or environmental monitors that dissolve when exposed to water (eco-resorbable) to eliminate the need for collection and recovery. Analytical models for dissolution of the constituent materials represent important design tools for transient electronic systems that are configured to disappear in water or biofluids. Here, solutions for reactive-diffusion are presented in single- and double-layered structures, in which the remaining thicknesses and electrical resistances are obtained analytically. The dissolution time and rate are defined in terms of the reaction constants and diffusivities of the materials, the thicknesses of the layer, and other properties of materials and solution. These models agree well with the experiments for single layers of Mg and SiO2, and double layers of Mg/MgO. The underlying physical constants extracted from analysis fall within a broad range previously reported in other studies; these constants can be extremely sensitive to the morphologies of the materials, temperature, and the PH value, concentration, and properties of the surrounding liquid.

Abstract:Actuators that can directly convert other forms of environmental energy into mechanical work offer great application prospects in intriguing energy applications and smart devices. But to-date, low cohesion strength of the interface and humidity responsive actuators primarily limit their applications. Herein, by experimentally optimizing interface of bimorph structure, we build graphene oxide/ethyl cellulose bidirectional bending actuators—a case of bimorphs with fast and reversible shape changes in response to environmental humidity gradients. Meanwhile, we employ the actuator as the engine to drive piezoelectric detector. In this case, graphene oxide and ethyl cellulose are combined with chemical bonds, successfully building a bimorph with binary synergy strengthening and toughening. The excellent hygroscopicity of graphene oxide accompanied with huge volume expansion triggers giant moisture responsiveness greater than 90 degrees. Moreover, the open circuit voltage of piezoelectric detector holds a peak value around 0.1 V and exhibits excellent reversibility. We anticipate that humidity-responsive actuator and detector hold promise for the application and expansion of smart devices in varieties of multifunctional nanosystems.
