Abstract:Desulfurization and molecular structural modification are critical steps for producing high-quality biofuel. Here, we demonstrated an efficient and environmentally desulfurization process for converting waste cooking oil containing many impurities to low-sulfur biofuel, and this production process could be adopted on a large scale. This study found that composite catalysts (10 wt% base catalyst and 1 wt% cupric nitrate) could effectively remove the impurities (sulfur, chlorine and metal ions) in waste cooking oil during the deoxygenation process. The desulfurization rate was achieved at 94% over Cu(NO3)3 and K2CO3 (1 wt%:10 wt%). The copper nitrate catalyst converted sulfur species into water and H2S. In addition, to further obtain high-quality biofuel with low cold flow property, the above generated biofuel with low sulfur content was hydro-isomerized over the Ce–Pt/SAPO-11 catalyst. Under the action of the bimetallic catalyst, the isomerization reaction could be carried out at low reaction temperature (300 °C) due to the high olefin content (approximately 43%) in pyrolytic oils. A high-quality biofuel production with low sulfur content (lower 10 ppm) and low cold filter plugging point (−20 °C) could be obtained through the above two processes, which all met the ASTM and EN specifications. Overall, a novel method was reported to convert low-quality waste cooking oil to high valuable biofuel.

Abstract:<p>Fuel production from biomass offers a low-carbon strategy to address the global challenge of climate change associated with carbon emission. Novel technique with high carbon- and energy-recovery from biomass has been pursued for decades, but rarely achieved. Here we demonstrate the near zero-waste production of high-quality biofuels from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), a biofeedstock widely accumulated in microorganisms, under mild temperature (200 °C), with 99% carbon utilization and 91.5% energy recovery. Products are dominated by easy-to-use alkanes, butyrates and butanol. This technique paves the way for green production of biofuels from bioderived feedstocks.</p>

Abstract:In order to solve the pollution caused by food waste, research was carried out to test the feasibility of biodiesel and ethanol production from food waste. With separation process, waste oil and rudimental solid component of food waste were obtained. Chemical synthesis was utilized for biodiesel production with oil and fermentation was chosen for ethanol production from solid parts. The result demonstrated that biodiesel produced from waste oil were mixed fatty acid methyl esters with the main components of Octadecenoic acid methyl ester, Octadecadienoic acid methyl ester and Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester. Since they were similar to the composition to those produced with other traditional raw biodiesel materials, it demonstrated that this was a possible way to utilize waste oil. Furthermore, the solid part of food waste could produce 44 g/L ethanol under 35°C for 3 days with yeast cultured. Ethanol and biodiesel production from food waste could to a large extent save the production cost as well as solve the pollution problem.

Abstract:A stepwise process (SP) was developed for sustainable energy production from food waste (FW). The process comprised of hydrothermal treatment followed by oil upgrading. Synthetic food waste was primarily used as feedstock in the hydrothermal reactor under subcritical water conditions. The produced hydrochars were analyzed for calorific value (17.0-33.7 MJ/kg) and elemental composition indicating high-quality fuel comparable to coal. Hydrothermal carbonization (e.g. 180°C) would be efficient for oil recovery (>90%) from FW, as compared to hydrothermal liquefaction (320°C) whereby lipid degradation may take place. The recovered oil was upgraded to biodiesel in a catalytic refinery process. Selected biodiesels, that is, B3 and B4 were characterized for density (872.7 and 895.5 kg/m3), kinematic viscosity (3.115 and 8.243 cSt), flash and pour point (30°C and >126°C), micro carbon (0.03% and 0.04%), sulfur (both <0.0016%), and calorific value (38,917 and 39,584 J/g), suggesting similar quality to commercial biodiesel. Fatty acid methyl ethers content was further analyzed to assess the influence of hydrothermal treatment in biodiesel quality, indicating the limited impacts. Overall, the SP provides a promising alternative for sustainable energy recovery through high-quality biofuel and hydrochar production.

Abstract:The application of waste oils as pyrolysis feedstocks to produce high-grade biofuels is receiving extensive attention, which will diversify energy supplies and address environmental challenges caused by waste oils treatment and fossil fuel combustion. Waste oils are the optimal raw materials to produce biofuels due to their high hydrogen and volatile matter content. However, traditional disposal methods such as gasification, transesterification, hydrotreating, solvent extraction, and membrane technology are difficult to achieve satisfactory effects owing to shortcomings like enormous energy demand, long process time, high operational cost, and hazardous material pollution. The usage of clean and safe pyrolysis technology can break through the current predicament. The bio-oil produced by the conventional pyrolysis of waste oils has a high yield and HHV with great potential to replace fossil fuel, but contains a high acid value of about 120 mg KOH/g. Nevertheless, the application of CaO and NaOH can significantly decrease the acid value of bio-oil to close to zero. Additionally, the addition of coexisting bifunctional catalyst, SBA-15@MgO@Zn in particular, can simultaneously reduce the acid value and positively influence the yield and quality of bio-oil. Moreover, co-pyrolysis with plastic waste can effectively save energy and time, and improve bio-oil yield and quality. Consequently, this paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the production of biofuels using conventional and advanced pyrolysis of waste oils.

Abstract:A technical route for synthesizing the high-grade liquid fuel with the products of biomass pyrolysis was proposed. Experimental research on different paths in the route was conducted to obtain the clean motor fuel with high quality. Based on the optimized technological process in a fluidized bed reactor and the characteristic of Chinese biomass species,seven different biomass materials belonging to three species were selected as the samples,and a series of experiments were conducted for the production of bio-oil. The influences of biomass species to the yields and the properties of bio-oil were investigated. The diversities of bio-oil composition derived from different biomass species were presented based on the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis. Furthermore,the emulsification performance of different bio-oil with diesel was studied. The heating value of the emulsified fuel is close to that of diesel,and the viscosity accords with the national standard for light diesel oil,showing the potential for its commercial use. The distillates of bio-oil were separately upgraded by esterification,hydrogenation and gasification after pretreated by the molecular distillation.

Abstract:With the depletion of crude oil,the renewable energy sources has caught much more attention,and the first generation biofuel technology has got much complaint because of the competition with human food,thus,the second generation biomass conversion technology using straw,grass,wood as raw materials has become a more important trend.The challenge of the second generation technologies is how to remove the oxygen element from the bio-oil,and the hydrodeoxygenation is one of the most important solutions.In this paper,we review the production of bio-oil through the fast pyrolysis of lignocellulose,and the fundamental research and industrial development of bio-oil’s upgrading technology by the hydrotreating to produce biofuels with a low oxygen content.The products produced by the combination of fast pyrolysis and the hydrodeoxygenation only contain carbon,hydrogen and little oxygen,and has a very good compatibility with the refinery process of fossil oil,therefore,the combination process has the broad prospect of application.

Abstract:A novel and highly efficient process for the production of biodiesel from high-acid content waste cooking oil (WCO) was developed. Free fatty acids (FFAs) and partial glycerides in WCO were first converted to FA methyl esters (FAME) by immobilized partial glycerides selective lipase SMG1-F278N-catalyzed esterification/transesterification, while leaving triacylglycerol (TAG) intact. FFAs decreased from 28.69% to 0.05% after 8h of reaction under the applied optimal conditions and the immobilized SMG1-F278N showed excellent reusability up to 20 consecutive batches. Subsequently, the remaining TAG was transesterified to FAME by sodium hydroxide-catalyzed transesterification and 98.24% FAME was obtained after 20min of reaction.

Abstract:The use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly necessary to mitigate global warming. Recently much research has been focused on identifying suitable biomass species, which can provide high-energy outputs, to replace conventional fossil fuels. This paper reports an approach for increasing the yield of bio-oil production from fast pyrolysis after manipulating the metabolic pathway in microalgae through heterotrophic growth. The yield of bio-oil (57.9%) produced from heterotrophic Chlorella protothecoides cells was 3.4 times higher than from autotrophic cells by fast pyrolysis. The bio-oil was characterized by a much lower oxygen content, with a higher heating value (41MJkg−1), a lower density (0.92kgl−1), and lower viscosity (0.02Pas) compared to those of bio-oil from autotrophic cells and wood. These properties are comparable to fossil oil. The research could contribute to the creation of a system to produce energy from microalgae, and also could have great commercial potential for liquid fuel production.

Abstract:Biodiesel is a non-toxic and biodegradable substitute for petroleum-based diesel. However, it is impractical to use refined edible oils to produce biodiesel due to its high cost and priority for food products, especially in China, while waste oils with high free fatty acids (FFAs) can be considered as the raw materials. In the present work, a solid acid catalyst comprising SO42−/TiO2–SiO2 was prepared, characterized and studied for its activity for the production of biodiesel from several low cost feedstocks with high FFAs. The solid acid catalyst can be recycled, easily removed and can simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification. The influence of reaction parameters was studied, and the optimized reaction parameters are reaction temperature 200°C, molar ratio of methanol to oil 9:1 and catalyst concentration 3wt.%. The catalyst showed good stability. A continuous process for biodiesel production from cheap raw feedstocks was proposed, and a 10,000-tonnes/year biodiesel production demonstration plant has been built.

Abstract:Bio-oil, a promising candidate to replace fossil fuels, has received considerable attention for its sustainability, resource diversity and environmental benefits. Industrial production of bio-oil is urgently needed. In this study, a downdraft circulating fluidized bed reactor commercial-scale fast pyrolysis plant with biomass throughput of 1–3th−1 is studied. Rice husk was processed at a fast pyrolysis temperature of 550°C to evaluate the plant operation status. The system was continuously operated for 80.42h. The thermal properties of the feedstock (rice husk), dust (separated from feedstock), char and heat carrier were analyzed and the bio-oil properties such as water content, pyrolytic water content, viscosity, density, pH, heating value, solid content and ash content were analyzed and presented. All the tested properties of the bio-oil meets the pyrolysis liquid biofuels standards in ASTM D7544-12 for Grade G biofuels, except for the water content of the bio-oil, which is slightly higher than that of Grade G biofuels. In energy balance analysis, the potential recovered energy of the three main products was 8.0±1.1, 2.1±0.1 and 5.3±0.7MJkg−1 for bio-oil, char and non-condensable gas, respectively, which shows that the largest portion of the energy in biomass was recovered in the bio-oil.

Abstract:Bioethanol, as a renewable energy source, has been widely used in the energy sector, particularly in replacing traditional petroleum energy, and holds great potential. This study involves a whole life cycle assessment of bioethanol production and the co-production of high-value by-products—xylose, lignin, and steam—using three types of waste biomass: corn cobs, corn straw, and wheat straw as feedstocks by chopping, pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation methods. Secondly, the benefits of three raw materials are compared for preparing bioethanol, and their impact on the environment and energy production is analyzed. The comparison indicates that corn cobs offer the best overall benefits, with a net energy balance (NEB) of 6902 MJ/Mg of ethanol and a net energy ratio (NER) of 1.30. The global warming potential (GWP) is 1.75 × 10−2, acidification potential (AP) is 1.02 × 10−2, eutrophication potential (EP) is 2.63 × 10−4, photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) is 3.19 × 10−8, and human toxicity potential (HTP) is 1.52 × 10−4. This paper can provide a theoretical reference and data supporting the green refining of bioethanol and the high-value utilization of by-products, and broaden its application prospects.

Abstract:Waste frying oil is a highly promising feedstock for biodiesel production due to its lower cost compared to refined vegetable oils. In this study, biodiesel was prepared by transesterification of mixed waste frying oil with dimethyl carbonate, utilizing immobilized recombinant lipase in tert -butanol as the medium. The activation energy ( E a ) and pre-exponential factor (k 0 ) were determined to be 73.8 kJ/mol and 1.62×10 6 , respectively. Under optimal reaction conditions, the biodiesel yield can reach 88.5%. Subsequently, cottonseed oil was introduced into the feedstock to enhance the crystallization temperature of the product, which enables biodiesel production to meet the fuel property standards. The cold filter plugging point of biodiesel was reduced to 4.3 °C. Ultimately, blending biodiesel with diesel significantly reduces smoke emissions from diesel engines, with the B80 blend demonstrating superior effectiveness. This study presents an efficient and cost-effective method for biodiesel production.

Abstract:This study addressed the production of high-quality bio-oil and carbonaceous materials from in-situ co-pyrolysis of chicken manure (CM), algal bloom (AB) and woodchip (WC). The effects of biowaste-derived catalyst and AB-based NH3 on improving the quality of bio-oil, tar and carbonaceous materials were investigated, respectively. The major presence of Ca-Mg-P in CM resulted in a higher quality of bio-oil with a cetane number of 40 and HHVs of 38.62 MJ/kg. The loading of Ni2P further enhanced the catalytic performance of CM-derived catalyst and contributed to the produced bio-oil with a cetane number of 50 and HHVs of 40.85 MJ/kg. The major presence of K-Cl-Fe in AB and AB-based NH3 activation contributed to a larger specific surface area of carbonaceous materials as high as 567 m(2)/g. Furthermore, the catalytic activity, electrochemical activity and potential market value of biowaste-derived carbonaceous materials were explored in this study. To facilitate the investment decision-making in industrial applications, techno-economic analysis was conducted for the deployment of co-pyrolysis system in a hen layer farm for its daily treatment of 20-ton CM. The technological approach and techno-economic analysis can be generalized to the other types of bioresources. This work provides a novel and effective approach to convert and manage biowaste resources for environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality.

Abstract:<p>In order to treat waste during oleic acid production, pyrolysis method was used to investigate the plant oil asphalt (POA) to obtain bio-fuel. It was found that the compounds contained alkane, alkene, fatty acid, plant sterol derivatives, alcohol and etc. in pyrolysis products of POA by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (Py-GC-MS). The Electrospray Ionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR-MS) results showed that dehydrogenation and polymerization reactions took place during the pyrolysis process, but the main reaction was decarboxylation. According to van Krevelen diagram the nature of the bio-fuel can be evaluated. The acid value and viscosity of the resulting bio-fuel produced were higher than that of diesel fuel and reference bio-fuel. The calorific value showed a slight lower value than that of diesel oil. These studies nominated POA as a potential renewable feedstock for bio-fuel production the simple pyrolysis method.</p>

Treatment of biofuel production wastewater by a combined freezing method for resources recovery and waste reduction

Abstract:Biofuel production wastewater (BPWW), which contains ultra-high concentration of complex substances including bio-oil and acid contents, is a hazardous by-product produced from the process of biomass-to-biofuel conversion (fast pyrolysis and hydrodeoxygenation). In the present study, a combined freezing method of freeze concentration and freeze-thaw demulsification was employed to treat BPWW. The effects of freezing parameters and BPWW properties on concentration efficiency in suspension crystallization and demulsification performance in freeze-thaw treatment were thoroughly investigated. COD and oil contents decreased sharply with removal efficiencies over 96% using multi-stage freeze concentration, and near 60-80% of the original volume wastewater could be purified and recovered. Moreover, the oil droplets in concentrates coalesced evidently (mean diameter grew from 10.02 mu m to 286.98 mu m) after freeze-thaw treatment, resulting in near 85% of the bio-oil in the concentrated BPWW could be separated and recovered. The results proved the feasibility and capability of the freezing methods for water purification, contaminates concentration and oil-in-water emulsion breaking in BPWW treatment. Based on these results, a conceptual mode of biofuel production process which includes the combined freezing method for resources recovery, including purged water and bio-oil, and wastewater volume reduction was proposed, which is of great significance to the sustainability of the biomass-to-energy technology. Abstract:Kitchen waste is an important component of domestic waste, and it is both harmful and rich in resources. Approximately 1.3 billion tons of kitchen waste are produced every year worldwide. Kitchen waste is high in moisture, is readily decayed, and has an unpleasant smell. Environmental pollution can be caused if this waste is treated improperly. Conventional treatments of kitchen waste (e.g., landfilling, incineration and pulverization discharge) cause environmental, economic, and social problems. Therefore, the development of a harmless and resource-based treatment technology is urgently needed. Profits can be generated from kitchen waste by converting it into biofuels. This review intends to highlight the latest technological progress in the preparation of gaseous fuels, such as biogas, biohythane and biohydrogen, and liquid fuels, such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biobutanol and bio-oil, from kitchen waste. Additionally, the pretreatment methods, preparation processes, influencing factors and improvement strategies of biofuel production from kitchen waste are summarized. Problems that are encountered in the preparation of biofuels from kitchen waste are discussed to provide a reference for its use in energy utilization. Optimizing the preparation process of biofuels, increasing the efficiency and service life of catalysts for reaction, reasonably treating and utilizing the by-products and reaction residues to eliminate secondary pollution, improving the yield of biofuels, and reducing the cost of biofuels, are the future directions in the biofuel conversion of kitchen waste.

Characterization results demonstrate a reduction in lignin content post-treatment, alongside a significant decrease in carboxyls and carbonyls, leading to an increase in the C/O ratio and noticeable enhancement in crystallinity. During catalytic fast pyrolysis experiments, the pre-treatment facilitates the production of oil fractions, achieving yields of 54.53% for total hydrocarbons and 39.99% for aromatics hydrocarbons under optimized conditions. These findings validate the positive influence of the deep eutectic solvent pre-treatment combined with ZSM-5 catalytic fast pyrolysis on the efficient production of bio-oil and high-value chemical derivatives.
