Abstract:Worldwide significant amounts of food waste are generated daily causing serious environmental issues, occupying land and requiring expenditure of resources for its treatment. A smart method for handling this food waste problem is the development of novel processes targeting the conversion of this waste into value added products. Although valorization of food waste to biofuels, biochemicals and bio-polymers have been widely investigated, the utilization of food waste streams into biofertiliser has not been intensively reviewed. Conversion of food waste, especially agriculture residues into biofertiliser would reduce its environmental impact, improve nutrition levels of the soil, decrease requirements for synthetic chemical fertiliser and have a direct benefit on food production. This paper reviews recent progress in the field regarding the production of biofertiliser from food waste, using anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, chemical hydrolysis, in situ degradation and direct burning methods. This review also highlights the latest field applications of biofertiliser derived from various food waste streams. It confirms that the technology for the conversion of food waste to biofertilisers is viable, but the production efficiency could be improved with better process control strategies, strict quality controls, development of a smart product distribution system and adoption of advanced technologies. Field tests have indicated that biofertilisers which are obtained in proper managed AD plants are safe and could partially replace the use of chemical fertilisers in field application.

Abstract:The research on ethanol fermentation from a variety of biomass waste, such as food waste, fruits and vegetables wastes, and the residue of traditional Chinese medicine, were carried out. The compound enzymes during the fermentation process were optimized. Corresponding combined protease and glucoamylase were determined to be the proper enzymes. In view of the fermentation waste liquid, the influence and control measures of reflux fermentation were developed. The accumulated lactic acid which affected the ethanol fermentation of food waste was determined. The resource technology for fermentation residue was carried out by volatile fatty acid (VFA) fermentation, and the different pretreatment technologies were optimized. During the utilization of fermentation waste liquid by microbial fuel cell (MFC), the influence of the components on the MFC reaction process was studied. The microbial dynamic during the process were investigated. At the same time, the study on the electric production efficiency of MFC was studied by adding chemical agents and appropriate dilution methods.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in utilizing food waste as a suitable and environmentally-friendly medium for microalgae cultivation and biorefinery production. This comprehensive review aims to explore strategies for establishing a microalgae biorefinery in food waste. Firstly, it provides overviews of the types and characteristics of food waste that can be considered as a growth medium. Subsequently, a well-investigated discussion on biorefinery production is presented, focusing on the accumulation of mass value-added products by addressing critical factors. The mechanisms underlying interactions in microalgae-bacterial consortiums for biorefinery production through complex metabolite exchanges are also discussed. The role of synthetic and systems biology, which promotes algal cell responses to nutrients and pollutants in wastewater, is summarized to ensure that algal cultivation is sustainable and aligns with sustainable development goals. Additionally, the feasibility of microalgae cultivation systems is evaluated from the perspectives of techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment. Finally, the review emphasizes the potential outcomes and current challenges associated with biorefinery production using microalgae cultivated in food waste. The integration of microalgae cultivation with food waste provides a promising approach to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable practices in waste management and biorefinery production.

Abstract:Kitchen waste is an important component of domestic waste, and it is both harmful and rich in resources. Approximately 1.3 billion tons of kitchen waste are produced every year worldwide. Kitchen waste is high in moisture, is readily decayed, and has an unpleasant smell. Environmental pollution can be caused if this waste is treated improperly. Conventional treatments of kitchen waste (e.g., landfilling, incineration and pulverization discharge) cause environmental, economic, and social problems. Therefore, the development of a harmless and resource-based treatment technology is urgently needed. Profits can be generated from kitchen waste by converting it into biofuels. This review intends to highlight the latest technological progress in the preparation of gaseous fuels, such as biogas, biohythane and biohydrogen, and liquid fuels, such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biobutanol and bio-oil, from kitchen waste. Additionally, the pretreatment methods, preparation processes, influencing factors and improvement strategies of biofuel production from kitchen waste are summarized. Problems that are encountered in the preparation of biofuels from kitchen waste are discussed to provide a reference for its use in energy utilization. Optimizing the preparation process of biofuels, increasing the efficiency and service life of catalysts for reaction, reasonably treating and utilizing the by-products and reaction residues to eliminate secondary pollution, improving the yield of biofuels, and reducing the cost of biofuels, are the future directions in the biofuel conversion of kitchen waste.

Abstract:The global annual production of rice is over 750 million tons, and generates a huge amount of biomass waste, such as straw, husk, and bran, making rice waste an ideal feedstock for biomass conversion industries. This review focuses on the current progress in the transformation of rice waste into valuable products, including biochar, (liquid and gaseous) biofuels, valuable chemicals (sugars, furan derivatives, organic acids, and aromatic hydrocarbons), and carbon/silicon-based catalysts and catalyst supports. The challenges and future prospectives are highlighted to guide future studies in rice waste valorization for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals.

Abstract:The source and the characteristics of food wastes are introduced.The recycling technologies for the wastes,such as composting,anaerobic digestion,deep-fry in vacuum,biotechnology with earthworm,fermentative production of lactic acid as well as biological hydrogen production are discussed.The use of family processors of small volume for the decomposition of food wastes,which cost less and can decrease wastes from the source,is an ideal technology.Biological hydrogen production and the technique of the anaerobic digestion combined with the fuel cell generating system provide a new way for the transition from wastes to energy.Furthermore,the utilization of biodegradable plastics (poly-lactic acid) synthesized by lactic acid produced from food wastes can help to get rid of the problem of the white pollution.

Abstract:Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) is an attractive lignocellulose feedstock for biofuel production due to its high organic content and biomass yield, and ease of collection and storage. SCB-based biofuel production through the biochemical route is considered to be an eco-friendly option. However, the sustainability of this green technology is still questionable for some technoeconomic challenges associated with the pretreatment, detoxification, microbial tolerance to inhibitors, and conversion of SCB hydrolysates into biofuels. Researchers have attempted to overcome these issues, particularly by developing cost-effective pretreatment methods and engineered strains capable of tolerating inhibitors and converting SCB-derived components more efficiently. This review aims to present the current status and challenges in the conversion of SCB into biofuels like biohydrogen, biomethane, biomethanol, bioethanol, and biobutanol. The major economic and environmental perspectives are also discussed to assess the economics and eco-friendliness of SCB as the feedstocks for biofuel production. In addition, this paper also highlights existing knowledge gaps that might inspire the readers to fine-tune their research, innovations, and business plan for the development of cost-effective technologies for SCB-based biofuel production.

Abstract:Food waste (FW) is a significant global issue with a carbon footprint of 3.3 billion tonnes (Bt), primarily generated due to improper food supply chain management, storage issues, and transportation problems. Acidogenic processes like dark fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and a combination of DF-AD can produce renewable biofuels (Bio-CH4, Bio-H2) by valorising FW, aligning with the UN SDGs. FW is an ideal substrate for acidogenic processes due to its high moisture content, organic matter, and biodegradability. However, the choice of FW valorisation pathways depends on energy yield, conversion efficiency, and cost effectiveness. Acidogenic processes are not economically viable for industrial scale FW treatment due to reduced energy recovery from stand-alone processes. So, this study reviews comparative studies on biogas, biohydrogen, and biohythane production from FW via acidogenic processes, focusing on energy yield, energy recovery, and environmental and economic impact to provide a clear understanding of energy recovery and yield from all acidogenic processes. Additionally, this review also explores the recent advancements in digestate slurry management and the synergistic effects of AD and HTC processes. Lastly, a futuristic integrated bio-thermo-chemical process is proposed for maximum energy recovery, valuing food waste to energy vectors (Bio-H2, Bio-CH4, and hydro-char) along with digestate management and biofertilizer production.

Abstract:<p>The increasing amounts of food wastage and accumulation generated per annum due to the growing human population worldwide often associated with environmental pollution issues and scarcity of natural resources. In view of this, science community has worked towards in finding sustainable approaches to replace the common practices for food waste management. The agricultural and food processing wastes rich in nutrients are often the attractive substrates for the bioconversion for valuable bioproducts such as industrial enzymes, biofuel and bioactive compounds. The sustainable approaches on the re-utilization of food wastes as the industrial substrates for production of valuable bioproducts has meet the goals of circular bioeconomy, results in the diversify applications and increasing market demands for the bioproducts. This review discusses the current practice and recent advances on reutilization of food waste for bioconversion of valuable bioproducts from agricultural and food processing wastes.</p>

Abstract:Background Plant-derived wastes from agriculture, processing, distribution, and retail are generated in large quantities. The majority of the wastes are underutilized and may cause severe environmental problems if not properly handled. The plant-derived wastes are usually rich in lignocellulose and other valuable compounds including protein, fat, sugar, and phytochemicals. Valorization of these compounds in food waste not only reduces environmental concerns but also improves sustainability and economic competitiveness of agro-food industries. Scope and approach This review paper first discussed different phases of the biorefinery concepts and their associated applications, and then introduced recent advances in the integrated processing of plant-derived waste for producing various value-added products. Finally, techno-economic, environmental, and social assessments along with relevant policies were introduced and discussed. Key findings and conclusions During the past ten years, research attentions focused on integrated utilization of plant-derived waste to produce various products have flourished. Compared to production of a single component for food waste valorization, integrated processing of food waste via a combination of different novel technologies to produce multiple products based on a biorefinery concept has significant advantages, including full utilization of feedstocks, minimization of waste generation during processing, synergy effects of different technologies, and diversification of the revenues by covering multiple markets. With the rationale design of biorefinery processes, underutilized plant-based wastes can be valuable resources for the sustainable production of food, chemicals, and biofuels. However, detailed economic, environmental, and social analyses for the biorefinery process are still needed in the future.

Abstract:Waste to energy and fuel is an emerging area to deal with waste treatment and realize the circular economy. The issues regarding the disposal of wet waste, especially food waste, are of continuous concern worldwide. The growth of wet waste, which is a manifestation of increased human production and consumption, may imply a high carbon input to the atmosphere. However, it can be converted into bioenergy and biochar, which means a latent economic performance and negative emission potential. Studies on wet-waste conversion technologies have been frequently seen in recent years, whereas few studies have been conducted to summarize, compare, and discuss them. In this review, we evaluate several typical wet-waste conversion technologies (including but not limited to anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization, incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis) through a literature survey and highlight their carbon emissions and negative emission potential for different categories of wet waste. The review shows that, for the treatment of wet waste, including sewage sludge, food waste, and animal manure, all of the discussed wet-waste conversion technologies were found to be more environmentally favorable than traditional landfilling or composting methods. Anaerobic digestion stands out in terms of both sustainability and commercial maturity. Alongside the assessment of carbon footprints across various wet-waste categories, the technological development and economic performance of the waste-to-energy technologies and the application of artificial intelligence in the field have also been reviewed, aiming to present an objective and comprehensive overview of the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and to ascribe possible projections of future developments in this domain.

Abstract:Food waste (FW) management is a global conundrum because of the rapid population growth and growing economic activity. Currently, incineration and landfill are still the main means for FW management, while their environmental sustainability and economic viability have been in question. Recently, the biological processes including anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, bioethanol fermentation, feed fermentation etc. have attracted increasing interest with the aims for energy and resource recovery from FW. However, these biological approaches have inherent drawbacks, and cannot provide a comprehensive solution for future FW management. Therefore, this review attempts to offer a critical and holistic analysis of current biotechnologies for FW management with the focus on the challenges and solutions forward. The biological approaches towards future FW management should be able to achieve both environmental sustainability and economic viability. In this instance, the concept of zero solid discharge-driven resource recovery has thus been put forward. According to which, several innovative biological processes for FW management are further elucidated with critical analysis on their engineering feasibility and environmental sustainability. It turns out that is an urgent need for turning current single task-orientated bioprocess to an integrated biological process with multiple tasks of concurrent recovery of water, resource and energy together with zero-solid discharge.

Abstract:The accumulation of organic waste, such as wasted food, municipal solid waste, food processing waste, agriculture residue, and forest waste, causes worldwide concerns due to limit landfill spaces and tightened rules on incineration. In recent years, various strategies have been explored for the reduction of organic waste materials and to recycle and reuse these materials for the production of value-added products. One of the emerging approaches is the conversion of organic waste into biofertilizer. This chapter reviews recent progress in the area regarding the conversion various organic waste streams into biofertilizers, including wasted food, municipal solid waste, food processing waste, and agriculture residue. Reports on the field tests of these biofertilizers are reviewed as well.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, the globe is facing tremendous effects due to the unnecessary piling of municipal solid waste among which food waste holds a greater portion. This practice not only affects the environment in terms of generating greenhouse gas emissions but when left dumped in landfills will also trigger poverty and malnutrition. This review focuses on the global trend in food waste management strategies involved in the effective utilization of food waste to produce various value-added products in a microbiology aspect, thereby diminishing the negative impacts caused by the unnecessary side effects of non-renewable energy sources. The review also detailed the efficiency of microorganisms in the production of various bio-energies as well. Further, recent attempts to the exploitation of genetically modified microorganisms in producing value-added products were enlisted. This also attempted to address food waste valorization techniques, the combined applications of various processes for an enhanced yield of different compounds, and addressed various challenges. Further, the current challenges involved in various processes and the effective measures to tackle them in the future have been addressed. Thus, the present review has successfully addressed the circular bio-economy in food waste valorization.

Abstract:The ever-increasing rise in the global population coupled with rapid urbanization demands considerable consumption of fossil fuel, food, and water. This in turn leads to energy depletion, greenhouse gas emissions and wet wastes generation (including food waste, animal manure, and sewage sludge). Conversion of the wet wastes to bioenergy and biochar is a promising approach to mitigate wastes, emissions and energy depletion, and simultaneously promotes sustainability and circular economy. In this study, various conversion technologies for transformation of wet wastes to bioenergy and biochar, including anaerobic digestion, gasification, incineration, hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction, slow and fast pyrolysis, are comprehensively reviewed. The technological challenges impeding the widespread adoption of these wet waste conversion technologies are critically examined. Eventually, the study presents insightful recommendations for the technological advancements and wider acceptance of these processes by establishing a hierarchy of factors dictating their performance. These include: i) life-cycle assessment of these conversion technologies with the consideration of reactor design and catalyst utilization from lab to plant level; ii) process intensification by integrating one or more of the wet waste conversion technologies for improved performance and sustainability; and iii) emerging machine learning modeling is a promising strategy to aid the product characterization and optimization of system design for the specific to the bioenergy or biochar application.
