Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of early maladaptive schemas in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients, their siblings, and healthy controls to evaluate the association between genetic and environmental factors and early maladaptive schemas. Methods: The study group included 42 obsessive-compulsive disorder patients who were admitted to and diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder at the outpatient psychiatry clinic of Karadeniz Technical University Medical School between December 2017 and November 2018 and their 24 siblings who were born to and raised by the same parents and 42 volunteers. Diagnoses were based on the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria. The patients filled out the Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 and the Yale-Brown Obsession-Compulsion Scale. Results: The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, marital status, occupation, presence of comorbidity, and income level. The comparison of the scores of Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 subscales revealed significant differences among the groups in failure, pessimism, social isolation/alienation, approval-seeking, enmeshment, abandonment, punishment, and defectiveness schemas. The post hoc analysis revealed that pessimism and defectiveness were significantly different between the patient and sibling groups, and approval-seeking, enmeshment, and abandonment were significantly different between the control and the sibling groups. The comparison of the Yale-Brown Obsession-Compulsion Scale and the Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 results revealed that the subscales of enmeshment, failure, approval-seeking, and unrelenting standards were significantly correlated with the obsession and compulsion subscales and the total score in the Yale-Brown Obsession-Compulsion Scale. Conclusion: We found similarities between early maladaptive schemas in the obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and their healthy siblings. We also found differences between the siblings and the healthy controls. These findings suggest a familial and genetic basis for the early maladaptive schemas in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients, which should be further evaluated in future studies with larger samples.

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of the study was twofolded: to identify the early maladaptive schemas characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder in a Hungarian sample and, to examine the presence and severity of comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms in the light of early maladaptive schemas. Methods: 112 participants (58 men and 54 women) diagnosed with OCD were involved in the study. The questionnaire package consisted of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) and the Schema Questionnaire (SQ). Results: We identified five early maladaptive schemas with a direct effect on the manifestation of obsessive-compulsive symptoms: Mistrust-Abuse, Inferiority/Shame, Dependence/Incompetence, Insufficient Self-Control/Self-Discipline and Entitlement/Grandiosity (reversed effect). Based on the severity of the early maladaptive schemas, three significantly different groups could be identified in our sample: patients with mild, moderate and high schema-values. Among the groups significant differences can be found in the appearance and severity of compulsive symptoms, as well as in the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms. But contrary to our expectations, not the severity, but the number of the early maladaptive schemas showed a stronger correlation with the symptom variables. An additional result of our study derives from canonical correlation, addressing the relationship among early maladaptive schemas, OCD symptoms, anxiety and depressive symptoms from a new perspective. The results highlight that OCD is only one and not the most serious consequence of personality damage, indicated by early maladaptive schemas. Discussion: The results of our study suggest that obsessive-compulsive disorder can be divided into several subgroups, which can be separated in terms of symptom severity, comorbid psychiatric symptoms and personality impairment patterns. The relationship between OCD symptom severity and personality impairment seems to be not directly proportional. Our results strengthen the new dimensional view of OCD, which can determine the selection of the appropriate therapeutic treatment method beyond the diagnostic process.

Abstract:Introduction: Current evidence suggests that early maladaptive schemas are affected in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most of the studies on the subject have been conducted with adults, but the number of studies conducted with adolescents with ADHD is quite limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate early maladaptive schemas in adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: The study included 66 patients diagnosed with ADHD and 70 healthy adolescents who were similar to the case group in terms of age and gender. Clinical evaluation of the case and control groups were performed with "The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version, DSM-5 November 2016-Turkish Adaptation (K-SADS-PL-DSM-5-T)". "Conners-Wells Adolescent Self-Report Scale - Revised Short Form (CASS-RS)" and "Set of Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaires for Children and Adolescents between the ages of 10-16" were administered to all participants. Results: It was determined that the schema scores of "dependence/incompetence", "vulnerability to harm or illness", "entitlement/grandiosity", "insufficient self-control", "subjugation" were significantly higher in the ADHD group than in the control group. A negative, significant relationship was found between age and "enmeshment/undeveloped self", "entitlement/grandiosity" and "insufficient self-control" schema scores. There was no significant difference between schema scores in terms of gender in the ADHD group. Additionally, no significant relationship was found between the education level of the parents, family income levels and schema scores. A significant positive relationship was found between the CASS-RS scores and all schema scores. As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that CASS-RS scores positively predicted all schema scores, while the age variable negatively predicted only the schema scores of "enmeshment/undeveloped self". Discussion: Results of this study showed that there were significant differences in adolescents in the ADHD group compared to the control group in terms of early maladaptive schemas, and that ADHD symptom levels was associated with early maladaptive schemas.

Abstract:The theory of early maladaptive schemas was initiated by Young, who postulated that each pathology is supported by one or several schemas. Adults with anxiety disorders more activate schemas that controls. This hyper activate schemas would go back the childhood. In this study, we measure some cognitive schema's activation, with the Schmidt and al. Questionnaire: this schema's questionnaire measures the dysfunctional schemas in actual way. Our purpose was to compare early maladaptive schema's activation of adults with anxiety disorders and adults healthy. The results indicate that each dysfunctional schema is more significatively activate by the adults with anxiety disorders that adults healthy. He doesn't exist schema typical of anxiety, but just a more important activation of all schemas of adults with -anxiety disorders. All subjects (with anxiety disorder and healthy) activate the schemas in the same order. It would appear that schema who imply an action of subject was more activate. So, in our study, we doesn't observe schema typical of anxiety, as opposed to postulate of Young and Klosko. In fact, in comparison with healthy subjects, all early maladaptive schemas of subjects with anxiety disorders were hypervalent. The order of schema's activation was the same in the two groups, but the activation in the anxious is always more important that in the healthy. All early maladaptive schemas would so hyperactivate in the anxious and a important activation of this schemas in the infancy would predispose to adult's anxious pathology. We consider this research as a preliminary work about early maladaptive schemas. In order to specify the research about schemas in the anxious, il will be interesting to observe this schemas according to different anxious disorders and to study prospectively the evolution of child's schemas.

Abstract:The present study aimed to examine the specificity of schema domains in three personality disorder (PD) groups, namely borderline (BPD), obsessive-compulsive (OCPD), and avoidant PD (AvPD), and to correctly identify the three PD groups on the basis of these schemas. The sample consisted of 48 clinical participants diagnosed with PDs and assigned to 1 of 3 groups on the basis of their Axis II diagnoses (BPD: n = 13; OCPD: n = 13; AvPD: n = 22). High scores on Dependence/Incompetence, Defectiveness/ Shame and Abandonment were found for the BPD group. Such pattern appears to be most consistent with Young's theory of BPD. Consistent with the theory and empirical findings of Beck et al. (1990, 2001), OCPD was associated with elevations on the Unrelenting Standards schema domain, but not on Emotional Inhibition, which was found to be elevated for AvPD. In conclusion, the present study suggests that there are different patterns of schema domains across different PDs and that the Schema Questionnaire (SQ) is potentially useful in differentiating between these PDs.

Early maladaptive schemas in patients with somatoform disorders and somatization

Abstract:Maladaptive schemas are stable relational patterns that develop through harmful childhood experiences with primary caregivers. Schemas within somatoform disorders are rarely explored even though these disorders are clinically important due to high prevalence, co-morbidity, and cost for the health care system. This study investigates schemas according to Young's schema theory in patients with somatoform disorders in comparison with healthy controls and patients with depressive or anxiety disorders. Further associations between schemas and somatization were explored. We included 134 patients with a somatoform disorder and 39 age-matched healthy controls, 83 patients with a unipolar depression, and 34 patients with an anxiety disorder. The clinical sample consists of day care patients, diagnosed with the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, but without a personality disorder. Primary measures were the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S2), the Screening for Somatoform Disorders (SOMS-7T), the Beck Depression Inventory, Second Edition, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Analyses of variance indicated that somatoform patients scored higher on almost all schemas than do healthy controls (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.148). The highest mean scores were reached for the schemas "self-sacrifice" and "unrelenting standards," with significant higher values in the patient sample. However, when compared with patients with depressive or anxiety disorders, somatoform patients scored equally or even lower. High somatization was associated with generally higher schema activation. This effect was to a great extent mediated by depressive symptoms. Only the schema "vulnerability to harm or illness" was exclusively related to somatization. These findings suggest that schemas should be systematically assessed within psychotherapy of somatoform patients.
The Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas in Postpartum Depression

Abstract:Purpose. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between postpartum depression and early maladaptive schemas. Design and Methods. The sample of our study consists of women who gave birth in Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and applied for control purposes at least in the 4th week and at the 6th month postpartum. Sociodemographic data and clinical evaluation form prepared by the researchers (the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EDSS)) and the Young Schema Scale-Short Form (YSS-SF3) were filled in by the participants. Findings. In the results of our study compared with women without depression, women with PPD had schema subdimensions of disconnection (emotional deprivation, social isolation, defectiveness), impaired autonomy (failure, pessimism, vulnerability to harm/illness), impaired self-boundaries (insufficient self-control), and high standards (approval-seeking) detected. Conclusion. The results of our study showed that some early maladaptive schemas are more common in women diagnosed with postpartum depression. Early detection of postpartum depression is very important for its prevention and treatment. Evaluation of early maladaptive schemas in postpartum women may be helpful in determining the risk of disease.

Abstract:Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are broad and pervasive themes regarding oneself and one's relationships with others originating from adverse childhood experiences. Although the concept of EMSs was initially developed for the treatment of personality disorders, the associations of EMSs with a variety of other mental disorders have been investigated. The goal of the present study was to summarize and analyze the EMSs-disorder associations in studies in which patients with specific psychiatric diagnoses were compared to healthy controls. Of the 28 studies that met the inclusion criteria, 27 were included in a meta-analysis. Across diagnoses, all EMSs were elevated in the clinical groups. The largest effect sizes were observed for the social isolation, the negativity/pessimism, the defectiveness/shame, and social undesirability schemas. Depression (n = 8), borderline personality disorder (n = 5), and obsessive–compulsive disorder (n = 5) were the most frequently studied mental disorders. Heterogeneity between studies was high. Results suggest that mental disorders are not characterized by specific EMSs.

Abstract:Introduction: Psychotherapies, such as schema therapy, are receiving increasing attention in the management of pediatric headaches. The purpose of this study was to investigate early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) in adolescents with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM). Methods: This clinic-based, cross-sectional study consisted of 167 adolescents, aged 12–18, who were diagnosed with EM ( n = 140) and CM ( n = 27). The clinical characteristics of migraine, its accompanying symptoms, EMSs, the interrelationship of EMSs, depression, and anxiety were evaluated. We specifically analyzed psychopathology and abuse history as covariates in this study. Results: Defectiveness/shame, mistrust/abuse, abandonment/instability, enmeshment/undeveloped self, self-sacrifice, and subjugation schemas were more prevalent in the CM group. In terms of schema domains, the CM group scored significantly higher in disconnection/rejection and other orientations. Psychopathology did not affect the EMS scores, but a history of sexual abuse did. In patients with EM, a relationship was found between the variables of anxiety, depression, and five of the EMS domains. On the other hand, the CM group showed a significant relationship with anxiety, hypervigilance/inhibition, disconnection/rejection, and other orientation domains. Discussion: This study highlights the value of EMSs, anxiety, and depression in young people with EM and CM. Schema therapy and schema-based therapeutic interventions should be researched, especially in pediatric migraine, as they may potentially prevent the progression to treatment-resistant migraine.

Understanding Early Maladaptive Schemas Formation with Traumatic Experiences in Childhood: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:This qualitative study offers an in-depth analysis of the traumatic childhood experiences and perception of family relations of individuals in Turkey who have early maladaptive schemas. Criterion sampling yielded 20 individuals after the Young Schema Scale Short Form-3 was administered to 450 young adults to identify those with the most intense and active early maladaptive schemas. Interviews were conducted with participants using questions created by the researchers and analyzed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The analysis revealed two main themes: conflicting family relationships and lack of marital satisfaction, and dysfunctional parenting. The first theme had three subthemes: conflict and lovelessness between spouse, violent relationships, and relationships open to the negative effect of relatives. The second theme had subthemes about the father and mother. The emerging themes related to fathers include headlines of authoritarian father, ambiguous loss, absence of father, having a traumatic life, dysfunctional parenting and early finished childhood; the themes about their mothers are listed as passive, having traumatic life, dysfunctional parenting and early finished childhood. This study provides detailed information about schemas formation, the experiences and family structures of individuals with high negative schemas which are important for clinical assessment, conceptualization and intervention in counseling and clinical practice.

Abstract:The article presents an overview of researches aimed at studying the consequences of the traumatic childhood experience and not satisfied basic psychological needs. The emerging maladaptive schemas are considered the “moderators” in the association with stress and psychopathology. The emerging maladaptive schema is a stable pattern consisting of memories, emotions, knowledge and perceptions regarding oneself and relationships with other people. The main distinguishing features of emerging maladaptive schemes are: first, dysfunctional experiences that arise as a result of a child's interaction in the communication process with family members; second, perception of schemes as factual knowledge about themselves and surrounding reality; third, activation by external factors. The research data on the relationship between emerging maladaptive schemas and various categories of mental disorders are presented. The relationship of different schemas with various types of fears is described. It has been shown that the frequency of depressive and anxiety disorders is higher in people with ineffective emotional schemas. This is due to the fact that a maladaptive schema causes a person to misunderstand his emotions or interpret them negatively. The features of maladaptive schemas in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorders and schizophrenic spectrum disorders were revealed too. The emerging maladaptive schemas negatively affect mental health and well-being of an individual, his interpersonal relationships, and the ways of emotional response, which determines the need for therapy. Special attention is given to the researches of maladaptive schemas in adolescence with the prospect of their correction and mental status stabilization. In general, there are few studies concerning the identification of emerging maladaptive schemas in adolescents, and they show only the relationship of emerging maladaptive schemas with individual psychological characteristics. Considering that during life the maladaptive schemas become more complex and affect an increasing number of functioning areas, it seems appropriate to identify these schemas at young age, when they do not have a clear structure, are not rigid and do not cause persistent maladjustment in all spheres of functioning. However, until now, in studies of the adolescent population the aspects of studying the role of maladaptive schemas as a link between the traumatic childhood experience, problem parent-child relationships and emerging psychopathology had not been sufficiently studied. In comparison with adults, psychotherapeutic and psycho-corrective tactics of working with activated maladaptive schemes in adolescents have been developed to a lesser extent.
The Early Maladaptive Schemas of Self-Mutilators: Implications for Therapy

Abstract:The present study explored the Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) of individuals who engage in self-mutilation. One hundred five participants (34 males and 71 females) from a community site and from two clinical sites participated in the study. Four EMS differentiated self-mutilators from nonmutilators: Mistrust/Abuse, Emotional Deprivation, Social Isolation/Alienation, and Insufficient Self-Control/Self-Discipline. The following schemas were also found to differentiate repetitive self-mutilators from nonmutilators and from self-mutilators who had engaged in only one episode of self-mutilation: Emotional Deprivation, Social Isolation/Alienation, Defectiveness/Shame, and Insufficient Self-Control/Self-Discipline. Finally, the Social Isolation/Alienation schema was found to be endorsed more strongly as the number of self-mutilative episodes increased. The results are largely in accord with the theoretical suppositions of schema theory. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed in the context of schema therapy.

Abstract:Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and childhood traumas (CTs) are associated with disorder onset and worsening prognosis in many psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder (BD). This study aims to investigate the schemas in BD by comparing EMSs and CTs between patients with BD and healthy controls and the correlation between EMSs and CTs. 116 BD patients and 119 healthy controls were included in the study. The participants filled out the sociodemographic data form, childhood trauma questionnaire, and Young schema questionnaire - short form − 3rd version. Then, intergroup comparison and correlation analyses were performed. The BD group obtained statistically higher scores than the control group in all CT domains except physical abuse and in all schema domains except pessimism, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, defectiveness, and vulnerability to harm. The emotional abuse CT domain was found to be related to seven schema domains. Patients with BD experience more CTs and have more EMSs than the healthy population. Emotional abuse, in particular, is closely associated with EMSs. Both CT and EMSs are areas that need to be studied within treatment. Revealing schemas, which are critical psychological structures for the treatment of psychiatric disorders in BD, is a significant result of the study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are hypothesized to be stable, trait-like, enduring beliefs underlying chronic and recurrent psychological disorders. We studied the relation of EMSs with depressive symptom severity and tested the stability of EMSs over a course of evidence-based outpatient treatment for depression in a naturalistic treatment setting.METHODS: The sample consisted of depressed outpatients (N=132) treated at a specialized mood disorders treatment unit in The Netherlands. Participants completed measures of depressive symptom severity and maladaptive schemas before treatment and 16-weeks after starting with treatment.RESULTS: Specific maladaptive schemas (failure, emotional deprivation, abandonment/instability) were cross-sectionally related to depressive symptom severity. Moreover, the schema domain impaired autonomy & performance at pre-treatment related positively to depression levels at the 16-week follow-up assessment, whereas the schema domain overvigilance & inhibition at pre-treatment related negatively to depression levels at the follow-up assessment when controlling for pre-treatment depression severity. Finally, all EMSs demonstrated good relative stability over the course of treatment.CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that specific EMSs are related to depressive symptom severity in clinically depressed patients, that specific schema domains predict treatment outcome, and that schemas are robust to change over time, even after evidence-based outpatient treatment for depression.

Abstract:Introduction: Early maladaptive schemas developed during childhood are relatively stable. Once activated, these early maladaptive schemas could influence reality perceptions and create cognitive distortions. Previous studies showed that early maladaptive schemas are linked to depression: early maladaptive schemas could be a risk factor for depression (Young, 2001) and a vulnerability marker for depression (Dozoïs, 2007). Objectives: The main objective of the present study was to explore the influence of early maladaptive schemas on depression severity among a French adult population. Method: One hundred and sixty-two participants (mean age 29 years; SD=13.86) were enrolled, 66 men (mean age 29 years; SD=13.65) and 106 women (mean age 30; SD=14.07). Participants were invited to complete the Young Schema Questionnaire, short version (YSQ-S1-Young 1994) and the Beck depression Inventory, 2nd version (BDI-II-Beck 1994). Fifty-six participants were randomly selected to complete a paper version of the scales, and 95 participants completed an online electronic version. Results: Fifty-two percent of the participants were not depressed, 15% slightly depressed, 17% moderately depressed and 16% met criteria of severe depression. All 15 schemas scores were positively correlated to depression scores. Comparing schema scores and depression severity it can be noted that for severely depressed participants all schema scores were significantly higher, and six of 15 schemas were significantly higher in the case of moderate depression. In addition, three schemas (imperfection, vulnerability, fusional relation) are significantly and positively linked to depression scores, whereas one schema (everything is owed to me) appears to be a significantly negative predictor of associated depression. Conclusion: This study confirms results of previous research concerning the link between early maladaptive schemas and depression. What is more, the results show that the importance of these schemas increases with depression severity. The most important variation was found on schemas concerning interpersonal relationships like "abandonment" or "social insulation and social exclusion" as well as schemas related to personal competence as for example "failure" or "dependence and incompetence". Further research will be necessary to explore the role of depression as an activator or/and by reinforcing early maladaptive schemas.
Representations of the Early Maladaptive Schemas on the Interpersonal Circumplex

Abstract:The interpersonal personality theory and the schema therapy model proposed similar explanations for the development and maintenance of personality and interpersonal dysfunctions. They both emphasize that the fundamental needs of childhood are met within interpersonal relationships, and that unsatisfactory relational experiences in early years can lead to interpersonal problems in adulthood. The present study conducted a circumplex analysis of early maladaptive schemas to examine their locations on the interpersonal circumplex. A community sample of Turkey consisting of 1056 adults with an age range of 18 to 77 participated in the study. Results indicated that interpersonal problems were most strongly associated with the schemas in disconnection and the impaired autonomy domain that were located on the hostile-submission quadrant. The exaggerated standards schema domain was located on the friendly-dominance, the other-directedness domain was located on the friendly-submission quadrant, and the impaired limits/entitlement schema was located on the dominance vector of the interpersonal circumplex. All schemas and schema domains were represented on the interpersonal circumplex, consistent with the schema therapy model's conceptualizations of interpersonal relationship patterns. Circumplex locations of early maladaptive schemas revealed their structural map on the interpersonal circumplex. The present findings provide cross-cultural validation of the schema therapy model and empirical support for its integration with interpersonal theory of personality.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Both insecure attachment style and early maladaptive schemas have been associated with mental health difficulties. This study aimed to investigate how schemas relate to attachment style classification in mental health service users. A further aim was to investigate the nature of the relationship between psychological distress, common psychological difficulties, and attachment style.METHOD: Participants were 72 people in contact with mental health services who completed the short form of Young's schema questionnaire, a measure identifying their attachment style (experience of close relationships), and the clinical outcomes in routine evaluation (CORE; Evans et al., 1998) outcome measure.RESULTS: Overall, 81% of the participants had an insecure attachment style. The fearful group were the most distressed across several domains of the CORE, followed by the preoccupied group. Schemas differed significantly according to attachment style grouping, with the fearful group possessing the greatest degree of maladaptive schemas, followed by the preoccupied group. Discriminant function analysis identified differing patterns of schemas associated with attachment style.CONCLUSIONS: The results supported the relevance of both attachment style and maladaptive schemas to individuals with mental health difficulties. Importantly, several aspects of the individuals' symptoms and difficulties and their schemas were meaningfully related to their adult attachment style. Limitations included the small number of dismissing individuals identified, the problems of self-report in this area, and the absence of information about the quality of participants' current relationships.
Early maladaptive schemas and child and adult attachment: a 15-year longitudinal study

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the relation between early maladaptive schemas (EMS), as defined in schema therapy, and both child and adult attachment. Design: A 15-year longitudinal design in which child attachment groups (secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and disorganized) were compared in early adulthood on their profile of scores across EMS domains. A similar strategy was used to examine EMS profiles as a function of adult attachment groups (secure, preoccupied, and fearful). Methods: Sixty participants, recruited from Montreal day-care centres, were assessed at 6 (Time 1) and 21 years of age (Time 2). Time 1 attachment was assessed using a separation-reunion procedure and Time 2 attachment, using the Experiences in Close Relationships questionnaire. EMS were evaluated with the Young Schema Questionnaire (Time 2). Results: There were more signs of EMS among young adults with either an insecure ambivalent child attachment, or an insecure preoccupied adult attachment style, compared to their secure peers. These differences were not specific to one domain of EMS; they were reported for various EMS. Conclusions: The results suggest that specific elements of representational models are more likely to be related to the development of EMS: high anxiety over abandonment, negative self-view, and explicit manifestations of personal distress. Unmet childhood needs for secure attachment may lead to a large variety of EMS as defined in schema therapy.

Abstract:Introduction Bipolar disorder is a severe and chronic mental pathology, with an estimated prevalence of 1% in the general population. It is a complex pathology, encompassing a wide variety of severe and contradictory symptoms, with harmful repercussions on the patient's personal, emotional, social, professional and conjugal life, precipitating relapse. By improving our knowledge of bipolar disorder, we can support and accompany patients, helping them to understand their illness, to be able to manage it, to resolve the problems that may arise from it, and to prevent relapses and the occurrence of further episodes. Objectives The aim of our work is to explore maladaptive early patterns in people with bipolar disorder in the intercritical period in relation to their symptomatology and functional disability, given that consideration of maladaptive early patterns (IAPs) could lead to better identification, understanding and management of bipolar disorder. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. The sample in our study consisted of 40 bipolar adults and 40 control adults, recruited from the various inpatient and outpatient departments of our hospital. They were all university graduates, aged between 20 and 60, followed for at least 06 months and stabilized on treatment. After collecting the various socio-demographic and clinical data, we used the Young schema questionnaire-short form (YSQ-S1). Results Our study sample seemed to be characterized by certain specificities: high "self-sacrifice", "high demands" and "exaggerated personal rights". Feelings of dependence and incompetence were also high among our patients, especially those with type I bipolar disorder, leading to a marked decline in self-esteem and autonomy. Conclusions The data we have retained from this work show us the importance of drug, psychotherapeutic and family management in achieving thymic stability and psychological and relational well-being.
