Abstract:This qualitative study offers an in-depth analysis of the traumatic childhood experiences and perception of family relations of individuals in Turkey who have early maladaptive schemas. Criterion sampling yielded 20 individuals after the Young Schema Scale Short Form-3 was administered to 450 young adults to identify those with the most intense and active early maladaptive schemas. Interviews were conducted with participants using questions created by the researchers and analyzed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The analysis revealed two main themes: conflicting family relationships and lack of marital satisfaction, and dysfunctional parenting. The first theme had three subthemes: conflict and lovelessness between spouse, violent relationships, and relationships open to the negative effect of relatives. The second theme had subthemes about the father and mother. The emerging themes related to fathers include headlines of authoritarian father, ambiguous loss, absence of father, having a traumatic life, dysfunctional parenting and early finished childhood; the themes about their mothers are listed as passive, having traumatic life, dysfunctional parenting and early finished childhood. This study provides detailed information about schemas formation, the experiences and family structures of individuals with high negative schemas which are important for clinical assessment, conceptualization and intervention in counseling and clinical practice.
Relationships between Childhood Traumatic Experiences, Early Maladaptive Schemas and Interpersonal Styles

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Cognitive theories of psychopathology have generally proposed that early experiences of childhood abuse and neglect may result in the development of early maladaptive self-schemas. Maladaptive core schemas are central in the development and maintenance of psychological symptoms in a schema-focused approach. Psychosocial dysfunction in individuals with psychological problems has been consistently found to be associated with symptom severity. However, till date, linkages between psychosocial functioning, early traumatic experiences and core schemas have received little attention. The aim of the present study was to explore the relations among maladaptive interpersonal styles, negative experiences in childhood and core self-schemas in non-clinical adults.METHODS: A total of 300 adults (58% women) participated in the study. The participants completed a socio-demographic questionnaire, Young Schema Questionnaire, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Interpersonal Style Scale.RESULTS: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the Disconnection and Rejection and Impaired Limits schema domains were significant antecedents of maladaptive interpersonal styles after controlling for demographic characteristics and childhood abuse and neglect. Associations of child sexual abuse with Emotionally Avoidant, Manipulative and Abusive interpersonal styles were mediated by early maladaptive schemas. Early maladaptive schemas mediated the relations of emotional abuse with Emotionally Avoidant and Avoidant interpersonal styles as well as the relations of physical abuse with Avoidant and Abusive interpersonal styles.CONCLUSION: Interpersonal styles in adulthood are significantly associated with childhood traumatic experiences. Significant relations between early traumatic experiences and maladaptive interpersonal styles are mediated by early maladaptive schemas.

Abstract:Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and childhood traumas (CTs) are associated with disorder onset and worsening prognosis in many psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder (BD). This study aims to investigate the schemas in BD by comparing EMSs and CTs between patients with BD and healthy controls and the correlation between EMSs and CTs. 116 BD patients and 119 healthy controls were included in the study. The participants filled out the sociodemographic data form, childhood trauma questionnaire, and Young schema questionnaire - short form − 3rd version. Then, intergroup comparison and correlation analyses were performed. The BD group obtained statistically higher scores than the control group in all CT domains except physical abuse and in all schema domains except pessimism, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, defectiveness, and vulnerability to harm. The emotional abuse CT domain was found to be related to seven schema domains. Patients with BD experience more CTs and have more EMSs than the healthy population. Emotional abuse, in particular, is closely associated with EMSs. Both CT and EMSs are areas that need to be studied within treatment. Revealing schemas, which are critical psychological structures for the treatment of psychiatric disorders in BD, is a significant result of the study.

The mediating role of early maladaptive schemas in the relationship between early childhood trauma and alexithymia

Abstract:Early childhood traumas adversely impact both the developmental course and adulthood experiences of individuals. Previous literature showed that alexithymia- difficulties in recognizing, identifying, and expressing feelings increases as experienced childhood adversity increases. In this regard, the development and manifestation of early maladaptive schemas resemble the etiology and indications of alexithymia. Thereby, the current study aims to investigate the mediator role of different early maladaptive schema domains in the relationship between early childhood trauma and alexithymia levels. 435 participants, between the age of 18 and 74, were asked to fill out self-report questionnaires measuring traumatic childhood experiences (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20), and early maladaptive schemas (Young Schema Questionnaire- Short Form 3). Results indicated that participants with more childhood trauma experiences had a significantly higher score of alexithymia than participants with less childhood trauma experiences. Moreover, all early maladaptive schema domains- Disconnection and Rejection, Impaired Autonomy and Performance, Overvigilance and Inhibition, Impaired Limits and Other-Directedness, were found to be mediating the relationship between early childhood trauma and alexithymia levels. The current findings can contribute to the understanding of alexithymia and suggest a direction for schema therapy-based interventions that might reduce alexithymia levels effectively.

Abstract:Introduction: Current evidence suggests that early maladaptive schemas are affected in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most of the studies on the subject have been conducted with adults, but the number of studies conducted with adolescents with ADHD is quite limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate early maladaptive schemas in adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: The study included 66 patients diagnosed with ADHD and 70 healthy adolescents who were similar to the case group in terms of age and gender. Clinical evaluation of the case and control groups were performed with "The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version, DSM-5 November 2016-Turkish Adaptation (K-SADS-PL-DSM-5-T)". "Conners-Wells Adolescent Self-Report Scale - Revised Short Form (CASS-RS)" and "Set of Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaires for Children and Adolescents between the ages of 10-16" were administered to all participants. Results: It was determined that the schema scores of "dependence/incompetence", "vulnerability to harm or illness", "entitlement/grandiosity", "insufficient self-control", "subjugation" were significantly higher in the ADHD group than in the control group. A negative, significant relationship was found between age and "enmeshment/undeveloped self", "entitlement/grandiosity" and "insufficient self-control" schema scores. There was no significant difference between schema scores in terms of gender in the ADHD group. Additionally, no significant relationship was found between the education level of the parents, family income levels and schema scores. A significant positive relationship was found between the CASS-RS scores and all schema scores. As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that CASS-RS scores positively predicted all schema scores, while the age variable negatively predicted only the schema scores of "enmeshment/undeveloped self". Discussion: Results of this study showed that there were significant differences in adolescents in the ADHD group compared to the control group in terms of early maladaptive schemas, and that ADHD symptom levels was associated with early maladaptive schemas.

Abstract:Many studies have supported the mediating role of maladaptive schemas in the relationship between early childhood adversity and psychopathology in both clinical and non-clinical adolescent samples. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no study to simultaneously test the mediating role of maladaptive schemas in a combined model included in both clinical and non-clinical samples of adolescents. The sample of the study consisted of 132 non-clinical (M = 15.65, SD = 1.15) and 193 clinically referred (M = 15.05, SD = 1.07) adolescents. Criteria for the clinical sample included being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, depressive disorder or mixed anxiety and depressive disorder. Participants were administered The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Young Schema Questionnaire, Children’s Depression Inventory, and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesized mediation model that Disconnection/Rejection and Impaired Autonomy schema domains would mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms for clinical and non-clinical adolescent samples, separately. Furthermore, we tested whether structural paths of the model were different across the two samples, using multiple-group path analysis. Results showed that Disconnection/Rejection and Impaired Autonomy emerged as significant mediators in both samples. In addition, only the association between Disconnection/Rejection and depression was stronger in the clinical sample compared to the non-clinical sample.

Abstract:The article presents an overview of researches aimed at studying the consequences of the traumatic childhood experience and not satisfied basic psychological needs. The emerging maladaptive schemas are considered the “moderators” in the association with stress and psychopathology. The emerging maladaptive schema is a stable pattern consisting of memories, emotions, knowledge and perceptions regarding oneself and relationships with other people. The main distinguishing features of emerging maladaptive schemes are: first, dysfunctional experiences that arise as a result of a child's interaction in the communication process with family members; second, perception of schemes as factual knowledge about themselves and surrounding reality; third, activation by external factors. The research data on the relationship between emerging maladaptive schemas and various categories of mental disorders are presented. The relationship of different schemas with various types of fears is described. It has been shown that the frequency of depressive and anxiety disorders is higher in people with ineffective emotional schemas. This is due to the fact that a maladaptive schema causes a person to misunderstand his emotions or interpret them negatively. The features of maladaptive schemas in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorders and schizophrenic spectrum disorders were revealed too. The emerging maladaptive schemas negatively affect mental health and well-being of an individual, his interpersonal relationships, and the ways of emotional response, which determines the need for therapy. Special attention is given to the researches of maladaptive schemas in adolescence with the prospect of their correction and mental status stabilization. In general, there are few studies concerning the identification of emerging maladaptive schemas in adolescents, and they show only the relationship of emerging maladaptive schemas with individual psychological characteristics. Considering that during life the maladaptive schemas become more complex and affect an increasing number of functioning areas, it seems appropriate to identify these schemas at young age, when they do not have a clear structure, are not rigid and do not cause persistent maladjustment in all spheres of functioning. However, until now, in studies of the adolescent population the aspects of studying the role of maladaptive schemas as a link between the traumatic childhood experience, problem parent-child relationships and emerging psychopathology had not been sufficiently studied. In comparison with adults, psychotherapeutic and psycho-corrective tactics of working with activated maladaptive schemes in adolescents have been developed to a lesser extent.
Early maladaptive schemas and child and adult attachment: a 15-year longitudinal study

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the relation between early maladaptive schemas (EMS), as defined in schema therapy, and both child and adult attachment. Design: A 15-year longitudinal design in which child attachment groups (secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and disorganized) were compared in early adulthood on their profile of scores across EMS domains. A similar strategy was used to examine EMS profiles as a function of adult attachment groups (secure, preoccupied, and fearful). Methods: Sixty participants, recruited from Montreal day-care centres, were assessed at 6 (Time 1) and 21 years of age (Time 2). Time 1 attachment was assessed using a separation-reunion procedure and Time 2 attachment, using the Experiences in Close Relationships questionnaire. EMS were evaluated with the Young Schema Questionnaire (Time 2). Results: There were more signs of EMS among young adults with either an insecure ambivalent child attachment, or an insecure preoccupied adult attachment style, compared to their secure peers. These differences were not specific to one domain of EMS; they were reported for various EMS. Conclusions: The results suggest that specific elements of representational models are more likely to be related to the development of EMS: high anxiety over abandonment, negative self-view, and explicit manifestations of personal distress. Unmet childhood needs for secure attachment may lead to a large variety of EMS as defined in schema therapy.
Early maladaptive schemas in adult survivors of interpersonal trauma: foundations for a cognitive theory of psychopathology

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although the association between psychological trauma and early maladaptive schemas (EMS) is well established in the literature, no study to date has examined the relationship of EMS to PTSD and psychopathologies beyond depression and anxiety in a sample of adult survivors of interpersonal trauma. This information may be useful in helping our understanding on how to best treat interpersonal trauma.OBJECTIVE: We set out to investigate the association between EMS and common forms of psychopathology in a sample of women with a history of interpersonal trauma (n=82). We have hypothesised that survivors of interpersonal trauma will present with elevated EMS scores compared to a non-clinical control group (n=78). We have also hypothesised that unique schemas will be associated with unique psychopathological entities and that subgroups of interpersonal trauma survivors would be present in our sample, with subgroups displaying different profiles of schema severity elevations.METHOD: Participants completed measures of trauma, psychopathology, dissociation, self-esteem, and the Young Schema Questionnaire.RESULTS: It was found that survivors of interpersonal trauma displayed elevated EMS scores across all 15 schemas compared to controls. Although the pattern of associations between different psychopathological features and schemas appears to be rather complex, schemas in the domains of Disconnection and Impaired Autonomy formed significant associations with all psychopathological features in this study.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the usefulness of cognitive behavioural interventions that target schemas in the domains of Disconnection and Impaired Autonomy in an effort to modify existing core beliefs and decrease subsequent symptomatology in adult survivors of interpersonal trauma.

Examination of the Relationship Between Early Maladaptive Schemas, Attachment Styles and Adult Separation Anxiety ın a non-Clinical Sample

Abstract:Early maladaptive schemas are based on belief mechanisms that are shaped in the childhood of individuals and manifest in relationships in their future lives. These schemas consist of 5 domains and 18 sub-dimensions also affect the way people perceive others.Another factor that predicts relationships in adulthood is the quality of the attachment established with the caregiver in early life.Attachment types seen in adults are examined under 4 main headings. The aim of this study is to determine the level and existence of the correlation between early maladaptive schemas and attachment styles of individuals and their perceived separation anxiety in adulthood, using the correlational survey model. The scales used were, Personal Information Form, Young Schema Questionnaire ,Adult Attachment Scale, and Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire. 285 individuals, 148 women and 137 men, over the age of 18 and residing in Istanbul, participated in the study. According to the findings of the study, there is a positive correlation between the Fearful, Preoccupied and Dismissive Attachment subscale scores and the Adult Separation Anxiety Scale scores, and there is a negative significant relationship with the Secure Attachment subscale overall score. It is seen that the sub-dimensions of the Young Schema Questionnaire significantly predict separation anxiety in adults. On the other hand, it was found that the Young Schema Scale sub-dimensions were positively correlated with the scores of other attachment styles, except for secure attachment. The obtained results support previous studies.
Adverse childhood experiences and early maladaptive schemas in adulthood: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Schema Therapy is based on the theory that trauma and neglect in childhood lead to early maladaptive schemas and psychopathology in adulthood. The aim of this review was to evaluate support for this theory by synthesizing the literature on childhood adversity and schemas.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A systematic review and meta‐analysis were completed in compliance with PRISMA. PsycInfo, CINAHL, and PubMed were searched to identify eligible studies that reported unadjusted association/s between adverse childhood events and schema scores when participants were 18 years or older. Meta‐analyses were conducted to estimate the pooled effect size of associations between schemas and experiences of childhood adversity.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>A total of 33 studies met inclusion criteria and provided sufficient data for meta‐analyses on childhood experiences relating to toxic frustration of needs (emotional neglect, physical neglect) and trauma and victimization (emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse). Of the 124 meta‐analyses, 65 indicated that schemas show small to large correlations with emotional neglect (range: <i>r</i> = .16 [Failure] to <i>r</i> =.51 [Emotional Deprivation]); small to moderate correlations with emotional abuse (range: r = .20 [Vulnerability to Harm] to <i>r</i> = .44 [Emotional Deprivation]); and small correlations with physical neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse (range: <i>r</i> = .16 [Vulnerability to Harm] to.26 [Emotional Deprivation, Social Isolation]). </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>Of the 33 included studies, only one used a longitudinal design. However, based on the correlational studies available, early maladaptive schemas in adulthood are associated with a history of childhood abuse and neglect.</p></section>

Abstract:The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, individuation, childhood and adulthood separation anxiety. The sample of the study was consisted of 400 emerging adults, 265 (66.3%) women and 135 (33.8%) men, and determined according to the definition of emerging adulthood so the ages of partipants are between 18-25. Sociodemographic Information Form, Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 3 (YSQ-SF3), Separation Anxiety Symptom Inventory (SASI), Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire (ASAQ) were given to the participants. The data obtained from the scales were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis Stepwise Method. As a result of the study findings, all schema domains were found to be associated with separation anxiety in both childhood and adulthood. The Mediating Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas in the Relationship between Temperament and Depressive Symptoms

Abstract:Objectives: Personality traits and early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) play an active role in the emergence, maintenance, and treatment of depressive mood. Studies draw attention to the close relationship between temperament and character traits, EMSs, and depression. The first aim of this study is to examine the relationships between temperament, character traits, and EMSs. Secondly, we were interested to observe whether or not these variables explained depressive symptoms. Lastly, based on the previous findings and the idea that the development of EMSs is affected by temperament traits, the mediating role of EMSs in the relationship between harm avoidance and depressive symptoms was investigated. Method: Personal Information Form, Temperament and Character Inventory, Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3, and Beck Depression Inventory were applied to 205 undergraduate students (68% women). Results: Results showed the significant correlations among harm avoidance temperament trait, self-directedness, cooperativeness character traits, and with most of the EMSs. The disconnection schema domain, harm avoidance, and self-directedness personality traits predicted depressive symptoms. Moreover, controlling the gender effect, disconnection and unrelenting standards mediated the relationship between harm avoidance and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The findings supported the idea suggested by the schema theory that the temperament traits affect EMSs. We believe that these findings can support studies towards depression-prevention as well as the treatment of depressive individuals. Even without interfering with temperament characteristics of individuals, depressive symptoms might be reduced by working only with some of the EMSs.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to look at the connection between early maladaptive schemas, attachment styles, life satisfaction and emotional expression ability. Information such as the participants' age and gender was gathered on a voluntary basis for the study. There were 362 participants in the study, with 230 (63.5%) women and 132 (36.5%) males between the ages of 18 and 45. In the study, "Sociodemographic Form", "Young Schema Scale-Short Form-3", "Three-Dimensional Attachment Styles Scale", "Life Satisfaction Scale" and " The Emotional Expression Questionnaire " were used. According to the study's findings, the Young Schema Scale and the Life Satisfaction Scale have a generally significant and negative correlation. The Emotional Expression Questionnaire and the Life Satisfaction Scale were found to have a significant and positive relation. The relationship between the secure attachment sub-dimension of the Three-Dimensional Attachment Styles Scale and the Young Schema Scale was found to be negative, while the relationship between the avoidant attachment style and the anxious/ambivalent attachment style and the Young Schema Scale was found to be positive. It was concluded that the relationship between Life Satisfaction Scale and secure attachment style was significant and positive, while the relationship between avoidant attachment style and anxious/ambivalent attachment style was significant and negative. A significant relationship was found between the Three-Dimensional Attachment Scale and the Emotional Expression Questionnaire. The findings revealed that expressing emotions and secure attachment have a significant and positive correlation, while expressing emotions and avoidant attachment and anxious-ambivalent attachment had a significant and negative relationship.
The Mediating Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas in the Relationship between Childhood Traumatic Events and Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Older Adults (>64 Years)

Abstract:The current study investigated the mediating role of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) in the association between childhood trauma and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) symptom severity in a clinical sample of 42 older adults (>64 years). It was found that EMS total score mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and CPTSD symptom severity. Two second order schema factors (Disconnection; Impaired Autonomy) also had a mediating role in this relationship. Results provide preliminary support for the utility of interventions targeting EMS, particularly in the domains of Disconnection and Impaired Autonomy, in order to alleviate CPTSD symptoms. Future research is required to replicate these results within larger samples and to examine the efficacy of schema and cognitive interventions within trauma exposed older adults.

Representations of the Early Maladaptive Schemas on the Interpersonal Circumplex

Abstract:The interpersonal personality theory and the schema therapy model proposed similar explanations for the development and maintenance of personality and interpersonal dysfunctions. They both emphasize that the fundamental needs of childhood are met within interpersonal relationships, and that unsatisfactory relational experiences in early years can lead to interpersonal problems in adulthood. The present study conducted a circumplex analysis of early maladaptive schemas to examine their locations on the interpersonal circumplex. A community sample of Turkey consisting of 1056 adults with an age range of 18 to 77 participated in the study. Results indicated that interpersonal problems were most strongly associated with the schemas in disconnection and the impaired autonomy domain that were located on the hostile-submission quadrant. The exaggerated standards schema domain was located on the friendly-dominance, the other-directedness domain was located on the friendly-submission quadrant, and the impaired limits/entitlement schema was located on the dominance vector of the interpersonal circumplex. All schemas and schema domains were represented on the interpersonal circumplex, consistent with the schema therapy model's conceptualizations of interpersonal relationship patterns. Circumplex locations of early maladaptive schemas revealed their structural map on the interpersonal circumplex. The present findings provide cross-cultural validation of the schema therapy model and empirical support for its integration with interpersonal theory of personality.

Investigation of the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, temperament and eating attitude in adults

Abstract:Background: Current research on eating attitude has focused primarily on female perspective (Kapoor et al. in J Educ Health Promot 11(80):1-7, 2022; Piko et al. in J Prev Med Hyg. 63(1):83-89, 2022). To extend cross-gender approaches, this study aimed to examine the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, temperament, and eating attitude and to see whether these three concepts differ between men and women. Methods: The sample group consists of a total of 308 participants, 206 (66.9%) women and 102 (33.1%) men, living in Bursa and participating in the research voluntarily. In the study, Sociodemographic Data Form was used to obtain personal information of the participants, Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 3 was used to evaluate early maladaptive schemas, Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San-Diego Autoquestionnaire was used to evaluate temperament characteristics and Eating Attitude Test was used to evaluate eating attitudes. Results: As a result of the study, a moderate and positive relationship was found between the Defectiveness, Emotional Inhibition, Enmeshment/Dependence, Failure, Abandonment, Vulnerability to Harm or Illness, Negativity/Pessimism schemas and eating attitude. Among these schemas, Defectiveness was found to be the best predictor of deterioration in eating attitude. A weak and positive relationship was found between the scores obtained from the Eating Attitude Test and Cyclothymic and Irritable temperaments, and a moderate positive relationship with Anxious temperament. Among these temperaments, Anxious temperament was found to be the best predictor of deterioration in eating attitude. Conclusions: When the results were examined, a relationship was observed between early maladaptive schemas and temperament types, and this relationship was examined in detail. The results obtained at the end of the study were discussed and suggestions were made for future studies.
