Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic activity of alloy nanocatalytsts can be manipulated effectively by tuning their physical properties (ensemble, geometric, and ligand effects) to afford optimal surface structure and compositions for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) application. Herein, highly catalytic platinum-palladium nanowires (PtnPd100-n NWs) with a subtle lattice strain and Boerdijk-Coxeter helix type morphology are synthesized through a surfactant-free, thermal single phase solvent method. X-ray diffraction results show that PtnPd100-n NWs are exposed through the (111) facets and their shrinking or expanding lattice parameters can be modulated by the alloy compositions. Electrochemical results reveal that their high catalytic activity correlates with the lattice shrinking, facets, and bimetallic compositions, showing higher activity when the ratio of Pt and Pd is similar to 78:22, which is further supported by DFT results. Compared to the nanoparticle type platinum-palladium alloyed catalysts with similar metal compositions (PtnPd100-n NPs), the PtnPd100-n NWs exhibit significantly improved electrocatalytic activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction. These findings open new strategies to design the highly active and stable alloy nanocatalysts with controllable compositions.

Abstract:Electronic structure of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is critical for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis by adjusting the binding energy in oxygen-containing intermediates. However, the regulation of electronic structure has always been a challenge to improve catalytic reactivity. Herein, by introducing a heterogenous metal, the electronic structure through a direct bonding interaction to the active center atom is effectively adjusted. Partial charge transfer between the two atoms optimizes the binding energy of intermediates and reducing the energy barrier of the catalytic reaction. Theoretical calculations confirm these effects and the uniform distribution of 3d orbitals, leading to the improvement of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic reactivity. Benefiting from these attributes, the as-constructed bifunctional catalyst enables outstanding electrocatalytic performances in both oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation in various energy storage systems. The generality and expandability of this strategy is demonstrated by further successful development of other dual-metal catalysts systems with various active metals.

Abstract:The comprehension of the electronic structure of an electrochemical catalyst, as a fundamental core content, has significantly accelerated advancements in competitive catalyst engineering since the adsorption and desorption abilities of an electrode are governed by its surface energy profile. However, achieving precise control over the electronic structure poses a significant challenge. Nanoporous materials, high-entropy systems, and layered double hydroxides frequently induce stoichiometric changes, leading to complexity such as electronic reconstruction, energy degeneracy disruption, and impurity energy levels. Here, we have successfully developed a stretchable freestanding single-crystal LaNiO3 thin film electrocatalyst enabling the accurate manipulation of the electronic structure on a large scale. Different from the rigid epitaxial heterostructure catalyst, we observed that with every 1 % increase in strain, the OER current of freestanding LaNiO3 is enhanced by ∼238 % compared to the pristine state. This is attributed to the dx2-y2 orbital occupation increasing by ∼7 %, and the eg-center decreasing by ∼0.05 eV, resulting in a weakened Ni-O adsorption.

Abstract:We report a method for using battery electrode materials to directly and continuously control the lattice strain of platinum (Pt) catalyst and thus tune its catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Whereas the common approach of using metal overlayers introduces ligand effects in addition to strain, by electrochemically switching between the charging and discharging status of battery electrodes the change in volume can be precisely controlled to induce either compressive or tensile strain on supported catalysts. Lattice compression and tension induced by the lithium cobalt oxide substrate of ~5% were directly observed in individual Pt nanoparticles with aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. We observed 90% enhancement or 40% suppression in Pt ORR activity under compression or tension, respectively, which is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Alloyed nanoparticles with core-shell structures provide a favorable model to modulate interfacial interaction and surface structures at the atomic level, which is important for designing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. Herein, core-shell structured Pd3M@Pt/C nanoparticles with binary PdM alloy cores (M = Fe, Ni, and Co) and a monolayer Pt shell were successfully synthesized with diverse interfaces. Among these, Pd3Fe@Pt/C exhibited the best oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance, roughly 5.4 times more than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst used as reference. The significantly enhanced activity is attributed to the combined effects of strain engineering, interfacial electron transfer, and improved Pt utilization. Density functional theory simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed that engineering the alloy core with moderate lattice mismatch and alloy composition (Pd3Fe) optimizes the surface oxygen adsorption energy, thereby rendering excellent electrocatalytic activity. Future researches may use this study as a guide on the construction of highly effective core-shell electrocatalysts for various energy conversions and other applications.

Abstract:Platinum-based nanocatalysts play a crucial role in various electrocatalytic systems that are important for renewable, clean energy conversion, storage and utilization. However, the scarcity and high cost of Pt seriously limit the practical application of these catalysts. Decorating Pt catalysts with other transition metals offers an effective pathway to tailor their catalytic properties, but often at the sacrifice of the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA). Here we report a single-atom tailoring strategy to boost the activity of Pt nanocatalysts with minimal loss in surface active sites. By starting with PtNi alloy nanowires and using a partial electrochemical dealloying approach, we create single-nickel-atom-modified Pt nanowires with an optimum combination of specific activity and ECSA for the hydrogen evolution, methanol oxidation and ethanol oxidation reactions. The single-atom tailoring approach offers an effective strategy to optimize the activity of surface Pt atoms and enhance the mass activity for diverse reactions, opening a general pathway to the design of highly efficient and durable precious metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Lattice strain is considered to play an important role in the oxygen reduction catalysis on Pt-based catalysts. However, so far, direct evidence of the lattice strain in the catalyst nanoparticles has not been achieved. By using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy combined with image simulations, a unique core-shell structure, that is, a percolated lattice-contracted Pt-Fe alloy core and a Pt-rich surface with a gradient compressive strain, was directly demonstrated within individual dealloyed Pt-Fe nanoparticles and thus provides direct evidence for the strain effect on their enhanced oxygen reduction activity.

Abstract:Here, we investigate the oxygen reduction reaction activity of near-monocrystalline platinum nanoflowers presenting a low microstrain to decorrelate the contribution of (i) distorted lattice and (ii) high coordination active sites found within the platinum nanoflower pores to the specific activity enhancement. The results are discussed within the framework of previous investigations onto various catalytic nanostructures . We evidenced that the microstrain of the platinum nanoflowers stands out of the trends previously established for defective platinum-based nanostructures, where the activity is driven by lattice distortion. This indicates that (i) 'defective' structures with low lattice distortion, but high variation in coordination number, can be synthesized and (ii) that their specific activity improvement is comparable to the surface distortion approach in liquid electrolyte.

Abstract:Stress engineering can improve catalytic performance by straining the catalyst lattice. An electrocatalyst, Co3S4/Ni3S2-10%Mo@NC, was prepared with abundant lattice distortion to boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With the assistance of the intramolecular steric hindrance effect of metal-organic frameworks, slow dissolution by MoO42- of the Ni substrate and recrystallization of Ni2+ was observed in the process of Co(OH)F crystal growth with mild temperature and short time reaction. The lattice expansion and stacking faults created defects inside the Co3S4 crystal, improved the material conductivity, optimized the valence band electron distribution of the material, and promoted the rapid conversion of the reaction intermediates. The presence of reactive intermediates of the OER under catalytic conditions was investigated using operando Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalysts exhibited super high performance, a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 164 mV and 100 mA cm-2 at 223 mV, which were comparable to those of integrated RuO2. Our work for the first time demonstrates that the dissolution-recrystallization triggered by strain engineering is a good modulation approach to adjust the structure and surface activity of catalyst, suggesting promising industrial application.

Abstract:The development of low-cost, highly active platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for widespread applications of fuel cells. An effective approach lies in alloying Pt with non-noble transition metals to modulate the physicochemical state of the Pt surface. However, fundamental challenges remain in understanding the structure-performance relationship due to the complexity of composition, crystal type, and surface structure during the alloying process. In this study, we synthesized a series of PtCo bimetallic solid solutions with varying ratios using a liquid-phase synthesis method. By exploiting the characteristics of solid solutions, the resulting PtCo bimetallic alloy maintains the face-centered cubic crystal structure of pure platinum, minimizing the complexities introduced during alloying and facilitating mechanism analysis. Furthermore, under controlled alloy composition and crystal structure, we investigated the dependence of the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction on the surface strain of the platinum catalyst. The S-PtCo-SNPs cathode designed accordingly endows both proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) (2.08 W cm −2 at 4 A cm −2 ) and Zn-air battery (ZAB) (143.1 mW cm −2 at 214.5 mA cm −2 ) with outstanding performance.

Abstract:Through reasonable control of the thermal diffusion process and strategic manipulation of the short‐range local structure of the alloy catalyst, the synthesized Pt–Co/C catalyst shows a special core–shell structure and local tetragonal distortion, which modulate the alloy surfaces to produce stronger compressive strains. The catalytic activity and long‐term durability of the catalysts are significantly enhanced by the structure‐induced surface compressive strain. Platinum‐based alloy nanoparticles are the most attractive catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction at present, but an in‐depth understanding of the relationship between their short‐range structural information and catalytic performance is still lacking. Herein, we present a synthetic strategy that uses transition‐metal oxide‐assisted thermal diffusion. PtCo/C catalysts with localized tetragonal distortion were obtained by controlling the thermal diffusion process of transition‐metal elements. This localized structural distortion induced a significant strain effect on the nanoparticle surface, which further shortened the length of the Pt–Pt bond, improved the electronic state of the Pt surface, and enhanced the performance of the catalyst. PtCo/C catalysts with special short‐range structures achieved excellent mass activity (2.27 A mgPt−1) and specific activity (3.34 A cm−2). In addition, the localized tetragonal distortion‐induced surface compression of the Pt skin improved the stability of the catalyst. The mass activity decreased by only 13% after 30,000 cycles. Enhanced catalyst activity and excellent durability have also been demonstrated in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell configuration. This study provides valuable insights into the development of advanced Pt‐based nanocatalysts and paves the way for reducing noble‐metal loading and increasing the catalytic activity and catalyst stability.

Abstract:Regulating the binding effect between the surface of an electrode material and reaction intermediates is essential in highly efficient CO2 electro‐reduction to produce high‐value multicarbon (C2+) compounds. Theoretical study reveals that lattice tensile strain in single‐component Cu catalysts can reduce the dipole–dipole repulsion between *CO intermediates and promotes *OH adsorption, and the high *CO and *OH coverage decreases the energy barrier for C–C coupling. In this work, Cu catalysts with varying lattice tensile strain were fabricated by electro‐reducing CuO precursors with different crystallinity, without adding any extra components. The as‐prepared single‐component Cu catalysts were used for CO2 electro‐reduction, and it is discovered that the lattice tensile strain in Cu could enhance the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of C2+ products effectively. Especially, the as‐prepared CuTPA catalyst with high lattice tensile strain achieves a FEC2+ of 90.9% at −1.25 V vs. RHE with a partial current density of 486.1 mA cm−2.
