Abstract:The swift progression of modern society has accelerated the tempo of professional lives, leading to a decline in social connections and a subsequent surge in loneliness. People understand how emotional states like loneliness influence technology adoption as AI evolves, which is crucial for developing empathetic and effective AI systems. This study delves into the effects of loneliness on the propensity to engage with conversational AI, particularly emphasizing the influences of anthropomorphic interfaces and para-social interactions. 625 questionnaires were distributed and collected on the Wenjuanxing platform in November 2023. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software to test the proposed hypotheses and evaluate the relationships between variables. The model fit was assessed using CFI, TLI, and RMSEA indices. Mediation and moderated mediation analyses were conducted using the SPSS PROCESS macro with bootstrapping techniques. Our findings reveal that loneliness significantly bolsters the intention to use conversational AI, with para-social interaction emerging as a pivotal mediator. Moreover, the anthropomorphic interface was identified as a moderator that enhances the relationship between para-social interaction and conversational AI usage intention. This research contributes to the theoretical framework of factors influencing the adoption of conversational AI. It offers actionable insights for developing AI systems that cater to users' social and emotional needs. For developers and policymakers, the study recommends incorporating more anthropomorphic elements into conversational AI designs to cater to the emotional needs of lonely users and improve the quality of interaction. Future research should explore the long-term effects of conversational AI usage on users' social behaviors and mental health, while also specifically investigating loneliness as a predictor of conversational AI chatbot usage, and consider cross-cultural studies to confirm the applicability of these findings in diverse settings.
