Abstract:Active imaging can provide significantly larger signal margins in the terahertz (THz) spectral region than passive imaging. However, the imaging effect of THz active imaging is severely constrained by the orientation requirement of target reflection, which limits the application scenarios of this technique. In view of the shortcomings of existing THz reflective imaging systems, this paper proposes a new system optimization scheme from the aspect of hardware - a compact quasi-scattering screen (QSS) is proposed and designed as a beam-shaping element to eliminate the need for the best direction of specular reflection to the greatest extent. The corresponding relationship between the divergent Gaussian beam and target light field is directly established by using the equal-energy mapping method in non-imaging optics, which rejects the collimation process of the THz source. By customizing the optimization function in ZEMAX® to automatically optimize the surface of the QSS, the direction of incident light propagation can be adjusted. A non-coaxial reflective THz imaging system using a 0.1 THz continuous wave source demonstrates the ability of the QSS to improve the angle compatibility of the traditional THz reflective imaging system. The results show that the imaging angle compatibility range of the system can be increased to more than 5 times without changing the original imaging optical path and its resolution. In addition, it can also improve the imaging quality of the original imaging optical path for the object with a smooth surface or certain structure.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) imaging can serve as a versatile instrument to disclose contents of various packages or items hidden under clothing. When imaging a large target with a certain thickness at a long distance, the requirements for the imaging speed and imaging quality of the system are particularly worthy of attention. To tackle these problems and extend an assortment of application, this paper proposes a wide field-of-view (FOV) aspheric lens suitable for rapid imaging systems for extending the depth-of-field (DOF) of THz imaging at long distances. The designed aspherical lens with a diameter of 264 mm - made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and manufac-tured by machining - allows extending the DOF up to 85 mm by separately focusing incident light with different FOV angles, which not only allows fast THz imaging combined with linear array detector but also refuses the use of complicated imaging optical paths. A reflective one-dimensional (1D) scanning imaging system with a 0.1 THz source reveals that the lens can simultaneously achieve wavelength-level resolution and a DOF range of 85 mm for objects at a distance greater than 415 mm from the lens surface in a wide-field illumination system, in which the contrast of the obtained results can reach more than 15%. The observed results justify the application value of the lens in long-distance, wide-field THz imaging systems.

Abstract:A quasi-optical antenna system is designed for terahertz active standoff personnel screening in this paper. The design principle of the quasi-optical antenna is described in detail according to actual needs. The results from GRASP software shows that the system can achieve 10 mm imaging resolution over a 28 × 24 cm field of view at 2 m with a center frequency 180 GHz. it has the potential to be used in active terahertz standoff personnel screening.

Abstract:We present a terahertz (THz) real-time digital holographic system with zoom function worked at 0.17 THz. The magnification factor ranges from 1 to 2. In the imaging experiment, the resolution is 2 mm with the magnification factor of 1.2. A metal sheet with F-shaped hollow is used as a sample, and its THz holograms are reconstructed by our developed algorithm based on the angular spectrum theorem, and the qualities of the THz images under different conditions are compared.

Abstract:Due to the unique characteristics of terahertz (THz) waves, such as low-energy, penetrating, and broadband, THz imaging has been regarded as cutting-edge technology in many fields. As the demand for technology grows, high-performance THz imaging systems are becoming indispensable. The ability of THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system to extract spectra from amplitude and phase information opens virtually unlimited possibilities for imaging applications. In this review, the main performance achievements of THz-TDS imaging were displayed. The researches on fast imaging components for solving the existing deficiency of imaging speed of THz-TDS were summarized. Besides, the latest developments of several THz-TDS-based imaging methods, including tomography imaging and near-field imaging were highlighted, and an outlook on the performance improvement was presented.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of Abbe diffraction limit, the traditional terahertz (THz) continuous wave imaging methods based on lenses or mirrors are difficult to achieve super-resolution. Here we present a confocal waveguide scanning method for THz reflective super-resolution imaging. In the method, a low loss THz hollow waveguide is used to replace the traditional terahertz lens or parabolic mirror. Through optimizing the size of the waveguide, we can achieve far field subwavelength focusing at 0.1THz and achieve super-resolution terahertz imaging. In addition, a slider-crank high-speed scanning mechanism is used in the scanning system, and the imaging speed is more than 10 times faster than the traditional step scanning system based on linear guides.
Improving Terahertz Imaging by Light Field Processing

Abstract:Terahertz(THz)technology becomes increasingly important nowadays,especially in testing and security applications.Extending the field of view and increasing the imaging quality are both vital challenges for THz imaging.To address these problems,we build a THz light field imaging system based on a single-camera scanning configuration,which utilizes the 4D information of the spatial and angular distribution of THz waves.Based on the 4D plenoptic function and the parameterization method with two parallel planes,the intensity consistency of THz propagation is used for refocusing calculation,then a series of refocused images can be obtained by integrating original light field images corresponding to different imaging dis-tances and views.Compared with the original THz imaging,the field of view and the imaging quality of the THz light field imaging are effectively improved.In our experiment,the field of view was enlarged by a factor of 1.84 and the resolution increased from 1.3 mm to 0.7 mm.Furthermore,information on some obscured targets could also be retrieved by defocusing the obstructions.This method could improve the imaging quality of THz imaging as well as expand its functions,which inspires a new way for THz nondestructive testing(NDT)and security inspection.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) imaging provides cutting edge technique in biology, medical sciences and non-destructive evaluation. However, due to the long wavelength of the THz wave, the obtained resolution of THz imaging is normally a few hundred microns and is much lower than that of the traditional optical imaging. We introduce a sub-wavelength resolution THz imaging technique which uses the THz radiation generated by a femtosecond laser filament in air as the probe. This method is based on the fact that the femtosecond laser filament forms a waveguide for the THz wave in air. The diameter of the THz beam, which propagates inside the filament, varies from 20 μm to 50 μm, which is significantly smaller than the wavelength of the THz wave. Using this highly spatially confined THz beam as the probe, THz imaging with resolution as high as 20 μm (~λ/38 at 0.4 THz) can be realized.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a three-dimensional synthetic aperture imaging method with pulsed terahertz waves realized by a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. In contrast to synthetic aperture imaging systems operating at microwave or millimeter-wave frequencies where the frequency of the transmitter is scanned in the frequency domain, in our imaging system, all the frequency components are contained in a single terahertz pulse that can be generated and detected by photoconductive antennas. The image algorithm was analyzed theoretically and confirmed numerically using the finite-difference time-domain method. A key with plentiful detailed structures was used as the object to be imaged to demonstrate the three-dimensional imaging capabilities of this method. The resolution of the imaging system is 0.3 mm for the linear dimension and 0.1 mm for the circular dimension, as tested by the experimental setup. Finally, an optically opaque plastic pen with and without the cartridge was imaged, and the shape and location of the cartridge could be observed from the reconstructed three-dimensional terahertz images, demonstrating the non-destructive evaluation capabilities of this imaging method. Benefiting from the improvements in the experimental setup in this study, the imaging speed was significantly improved compared with that of the step-by-step scanning method commonly used in terahertz imaging systems with a single transmitter/receiver pair. This imaging method avoids the image degradation caused by specular reflections in active quasi-optical focal plane imaging and the lack of semiconductor devices working at several THz frequencies for synthetic aperture imaging, and may be used for non-destructive evaluation of objects with complex surfaces and internal structures.

Nevertheless, the balance between non-diffraction length and optical intensity is restricted and their applications have been limited in part due to their complication in access and operation, loss of energy and spectral bandwidth. Abstract:Terahertz (THz) technologies, generally defined as operating in the 0.1-10THz range, bridge the gap between electronic and photonic devices. Because THz radiation passes readily through materials such as plastics, paper and cloth it can be employed in non-destructive testing, and as it is non-ionising it is considered safe for security and biomedical applications. There is significant demand for high speed THz imaging across a range of applications but, despite ongoing efforts, fast full-field imaging remains an unfulfilled goal. Here we demonstrate a THz imaging system based upon efficient THz-to-optical conversion in atomic vapour, where full-field images can be collected at ultra-high speeds using conventional optical camera technology. For a 0.55 THz field we show an effective 1 cm $^{2}$ sensor with near diffraction-limited spatial resolution and a minimum detectable power of 190 $\pm$ 30 fW s$^{-1/2}$ per 40x40${\mu}$m pixel capable of video capture at 3000 frames per second. This combination of speed and sensitivity represents a step change in the state of the art of THz imaging, and will likely lead to its uptake in wider industrial settings. With further improvements we expect that even higher frame rates of up to 1 MHz would be possible.

Abstract:There are numerous applications of terahertz (THz) imaging in many fields. However, current THz imaging is generally based on scanning technique due to the limited intensity of the THz sources. Thus, it takes a long time to obtain a frame image of the target and cannot meet the requirement of fast THz imaging. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot direct THz imaging strategy based on a broadband intense THz source with a frequency range of 0.1~23 THz and a THz camera with a frequency response range of 1~7 THz. This THz source was generated from the laser‒plasma interaction, with its central frequency at ~12 THz. The frame rate of this imaging system was 8.5 frames per second. The imaging resolution reached 146.2 μm. With this imaging system, a single-shot THz image for a target object with a size of more than 7 cm was routinely obtained, showing a potential application for fast THz imaging. Furthermore, we proposed and tested an image enhancement algorithm based on an improved dark channel prior (DCP) theory and multi-scale retinex (MSR) theory to optimize the image brightness, contrast, entropy and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).
