Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband sub-wavelength terahertz (THz) imaging system by combining a solid-immersion lens (SIL) with a THz time-domain spectrometer (TDS). The imaging resolution of the system is enhanced in a wide spectral range (from 0.3 to 2.0 THz) with the aid of the SIL. The beam size is within 120–280 μm (0.28–0.8 λ) in the measured frequency range. Experimentally achieved imaging resolution enhancement results are consistent with the numerical simulation results. Unlike the previous reports on imaging systems using SIL, the beam size reduction by the SIL is more than a factor of n SIL (3.42) for all frequencies near the focal spot. An analytical calculation is employed to obtain insights into the beam size reduction mechanism and estimate the beam size in a given experimental condition. THz image of the WR1.9 waveguide is measured to highlight the broadband sub-wavelength imaging capability. The increased reflection from the waveguide near the cutoff frequency for TE 10 and TE 01 modes, inaccessible with other THz-TDS-based or continuous wave (CW) source-based THz imaging systems, is experimentally observed. In addition, we show the multispectral sub-wavelength images of subsurface structures by selecting the appropriate measurement time window of the temporal THz signal. THz images of a credit card show the sub-wavelength details of the card, including an IC chip, invisible due to the plastic cover. The experimental results highlight the potential applications of the imaging system in non-contact, non-destructive testing of the sub-wavelength scale structures in various fields.

Abstract:This work is focused on wideband terahertz (THz) beam/focus scanning reflectarrays/mirrors, to provide beam scanning solutions to THz real-time imaging systems. For the THz reflectarrays, frequency beam scanning method previously proposed by our group is experimentally verified in a frequency band of 200 ~ 300GHz. Meanwhile, the common mechanical scanning by offsetting the feed is also numerically provided. Based on similar idea, a THz mirror with plane wave incidence is also investigated in order to obtain a frequency scanning focus over a large frequency band. The simulated results are given in this paper. The proposed idea can also be extended to a mirror with frequency scanning focus as it is illuminated by a feed close to the mirror aperture.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy has been investigated for assessment of the hydration levels in the cornea, intraocular pressure, and changes in corneal topography. Previous efforts at THz imaging of the cornea have employed off-axis parabolic mirrors to achieve normal incidence along the spherical surface. However, this comes at the cost of an asymmetric field-of-view (FOV) and a long scan time because it requires raster-scanning of the collimated beam across the large mirror diameter. This paper proposes a solution by designing a pair of aspheric lenses that can provide a larger symmetric spherical FOV (9.6 mm) and reduce the scan time by two orders of magnitude using a novel beam-steering approach. A hyperbolic-elliptical lens was designed and optimized to achieve normal incidence and phase-front matching between the focused THz beam and the target curvature. The lenses were machined from a slab of high-density polyethylene and characterized in comparison to ray-tracing simulations by imaging several targets of similar sizes to the cornea. Our experimental results showed excellent agreement in the increased symmetric FOV and confirmed the reduction in scan time to about 3-4 seconds. In the future, this lens design process can be extended for imaging the sclera of the eye and other curved biological surfaces, such as the nose and fingers.

Abstract:In this paper, an approach to achieve wide-angle beam scanning in the terahertz (THz) band with frequency sweeping was proposed based on a metasurface structure. To widen the scanning angular scope, a coherent enhancement mechanism for improving the mode competition efficiency of the high-order diffraction mode was first implemented. A systematic method was firstly developed for the design of practical frequency-controlled beam scanning quasi-optics in THz band, in which the optimization of scanning range, linearity, and the avoidance of beam blocking are comprehensively considered. The proposed concept and approach was verified by the measured wide-angle beam scanning at the 0.18-0.22THz frequency band, with a diffraction efficiency of the main lobe as high as 88 percent. The good performance of the device paves the way for potential applications in THz imaging, moving target detection, and communication.

Abstract:Broad-bandwidth spectral analysis is one of important advantages of terahertz (THz) imaging technology, while low spatial resolution restricts its further applications. In contrast to the contradiction between the high-resolution and the low-throughput as well as narrow-bandwidth in the existing THz near-field imaging technologies, a high-resolution, high-throughput and broad-bandwidth terahertz imaging method is proposed in this work based on the terajet effect produced by a dielectric semi-sphere with appropriate refractive index. The terajet beam can break through the restriction of the diffraction limit on the spatial resolution of the microscopic system without losing the energy and spectral width.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) imaging can serve as a versatile instrument to disclose contents of various packages or items hidden under clothing. When imaging a large target with a certain thickness at a long distance, the requirements for the imaging speed and imaging quality of the system are particularly worthy of attention. To tackle these problems and extend an assortment of application, this paper proposes a wide field-of-view (FOV) aspheric lens suitable for rapid imaging systems for extending the depth-of-field (DOF) of THz imaging at long distances. The designed aspherical lens with a diameter of 264 mm - made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and manufac-tured by machining - allows extending the DOF up to 85 mm by separately focusing incident light with different FOV angles, which not only allows fast THz imaging combined with linear array detector but also refuses the use of complicated imaging optical paths. A reflective one-dimensional (1D) scanning imaging system with a 0.1 THz source reveals that the lens can simultaneously achieve wavelength-level resolution and a DOF range of 85 mm for objects at a distance greater than 415 mm from the lens surface in a wide-field illumination system, in which the contrast of the obtained results can reach more than 15%. The observed results justify the application value of the lens in long-distance, wide-field THz imaging systems.

Abstract:Bessel beam steering operating at the terahertz (THz) band holds great potential in improving the depth-of-field (DOF) for imaging systems and the quality of short-range high-speed communications. This article reports a THz reflective metasurface for frequency-controlled Bessel beams steering. A multiresonance structure with a large reflection phase range is designed as the fundamental element of the metasurface by varying its dimensions. At a designated frequency, the desired phase distribution to generate an off-axis Bessel beam is determined by four terms, i.e., phase to emulate an axicon, phase compensation for the incident plane waves, phase to deflect the outgoing beam, and a constant phase for optimization. Then, the metasurface, composed of $79\times79$ half-wavelength elements with different dimensions, is constructed to fit the desired phase distributions at multiple frequencies. Illuminated by linearly polarized (LP) waves, the metasurface can produce Bessel beams with controllable directions by adjusting frequencies. As a proof-of-concept, a metasurface prototype operating from 0.8 to 1.1 THz was fabricated and experimentally demonstrated for Bessel beams generation and beam scanning from 6.4° to 15.2° off normal.

Deep Sub–Wavelength Focusing Metalens at Terahertz Frequency

Abstract:With the benefits of non–invasive and low radiation, terahertz radiation has shown great potential in biomedical imaging applications. However, the low spatial resolution of the imaging system significantly affects its application in these fields. Although immersion techniques and super–oscillation theory have achieved considerable success in improving the resolution of imaging systems, there are still problems with large focal spot sizes or large sidebands. Herein, a solid immersion lens based on super–oscillation is proposed to reduce the focal spot size when illuminated with circularly polarized light at a wavelength of 118.8 μm. The simulation results show that the lens can compress the full widths at half–maxima down to deep sub–wavelength scales, as small as 0.232 λ. At the same time, the maximum side–lobe ratio was 16.8%, which ensured that the device had a large field of view. The proposed method reveals new ideas in the field of super–resolution imaging.

Abstract:There are numerous applications of terahertz (THz) imaging in many fields. However, current THz imaging is generally based on scanning technique due to the limited intensity of the THz sources. Thus, it takes a long time to obtain a frame image of the target and cannot meet the requirement of fast THz imaging. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot direct THz imaging strategy based on a broadband intense THz source with a frequency range of 0.1~23 THz and a THz camera with a frequency response range of 1~7 THz. This THz source was generated from the laser‒plasma interaction, with its central frequency at ~12 THz. The frame rate of this imaging system was 8.5 frames per second. The imaging resolution reached 146.2 μm. With this imaging system, a single-shot THz image for a target object with a size of more than 7 cm was routinely obtained, showing a potential application for fast THz imaging. Furthermore, we proposed and tested an image enhancement algorithm based on an improved dark channel prior (DCP) theory and multi-scale retinex (MSR) theory to optimize the image brightness, contrast, entropy and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Abstract:Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a promising tool for high-resolution 3D imaging of objects due to the high center frequency and bandwidth compared to microwave systems. In addition, terahertz waves have a higher penetration depth than visible or near-infrared radiation. Typically, optics are used to focus the terahertz radiation onto an object under test. This limits the imaging capability in the axial dimension to the depth of field and limits simple imaging of complex surfaces. In this work, we adapt a backpropagation algorithm from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging to reconstruct high-resolution 3D images from time-domain traces acquired with a lensless THz-TDS system. For this purpose, an inverse cylindrical aperture is used and an equation that describes the maximum achievable resolution as a function of the beam pattern, the bandwidth, and the length of the synthetic aperture is derived. The calculated resolution is for the linear dimension of the aperture and 75 for the rotationally symmetric dimension of the cylindrical aperture for a bandwidth of . The resolving power is verified by measurements on metallic and dielectric objects. In the future, this method can be used for non-destructive testing of objects with complex shaped surfaces and internal structures.

Abstract:In this paper, the wave equation based on phase shift migration technique is extended for terahertz 3-D imaging with quasi-optical transceivers. An analytical expression of the reconstructed 3-D point-spread function for targets under the illumination of a terahertz Gaussian beam was derived with this reconstruction technique. The quantitative relationship between the imaging quality and the parameters of the transmitted Gaussian beam was obtained, which provides a good criterion to be followed when designing the terahertz quasi-optical transceivers in the imaging systems. Moreover, the spatial sampling criterion was derived strictly which is also quantitatively related to the parameters of the transmitted Gaussian beam. Simulation results with fairly good agreement were given to verify the theoretical results derived in this paper. Finally, a monostatic prototype imager with a Gaussian beam transceiver was designed for the proof-of-principle experiments in 0.2-THz band. The 3-D imaging results of different targets and a mannequin with concealed threat objects were given to demonstrate the theoretical results obtained in this paper and the effectiveness of the 3-D terahertz image reconstruction for security applications.
A MEMS-based terahertz broadband beam steering technique

Abstract:A multi-level tunable reflection array wide-angle beam scanning method is proposed to address the limited bandwidth and small scanning angle issues of current terahertz beam scanning technology. In this method, a focusing lens and its array are used to achieve terahertz wave spatial beam control, and MEMS mirrors and their arrays are used to achieve wide-angle beam scanning. The 1~3 order terahertz MEMS beam scanning system designed based on this method can extend the mechanical scanning angle of MEMS mirrors by 2~6 times, when tested and verified using an electromagnetic MEMS mirror with a 7mm optical aperture and a scanning angle of 15° and a D-band terahertz signal source. The experiment shows that the operating bandwidth of the first-order terahertz MEMS beam scanning system is better than 40GHz, the continuous beam scanning angle is about 30°, the continuous beam scanning cycle response time is about 1.1ms, and the antenna gain is better than 15dBi at 160GHz. This method has been validated for its large bandwidth and scalable scanning angle, and has potential application prospects in terahertz dynamic communication, detection radar, scanning imaging, and other fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a three-dimensional synthetic aperture imaging method with pulsed terahertz waves realized by a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. In contrast to synthetic aperture imaging systems operating at microwave or millimeter-wave frequencies where the frequency of the transmitter is scanned in the frequency domain, in our imaging system, all the frequency components are contained in a single terahertz pulse that can be generated and detected by photoconductive antennas. The image algorithm was analyzed theoretically and confirmed numerically using the finite-difference time-domain method. A key with plentiful detailed structures was used as the object to be imaged to demonstrate the three-dimensional imaging capabilities of this method. The resolution of the imaging system is 0.3 mm for the linear dimension and 0.1 mm for the circular dimension, as tested by the experimental setup. Finally, an optically opaque plastic pen with and without the cartridge was imaged, and the shape and location of the cartridge could be observed from the reconstructed three-dimensional terahertz images, demonstrating the non-destructive evaluation capabilities of this imaging method. Benefiting from the improvements in the experimental setup in this study, the imaging speed was significantly improved compared with that of the step-by-step scanning method commonly used in terahertz imaging systems with a single transmitter/receiver pair. This imaging method avoids the image degradation caused by specular reflections in active quasi-optical focal plane imaging and the lack of semiconductor devices working at several THz frequencies for synthetic aperture imaging, and may be used for non-destructive evaluation of objects with complex surfaces and internal structures.
Terahertz Reflective Imaging Systems with Improved Angle Compatibility Realized by the Designed Quasi-Scattering Screen

Abstract:Active imaging can provide significantly larger signal margins in the terahertz (THz) spectral region than passive imaging. However, the imaging effect of THz active imaging is severely constrained by the orientation requirement of target reflection, which limits the application scenarios of this technique. In view of the shortcomings of existing THz reflective imaging systems, this paper proposes a new system optimization scheme from the aspect of hardware - a compact quasi-scattering screen (QSS) is proposed and designed as a beam-shaping element to eliminate the need for the best direction of specular reflection to the greatest extent. The corresponding relationship between the divergent Gaussian beam and target light field is directly established by using the equal-energy mapping method in non-imaging optics, which rejects the collimation process of the THz source. By customizing the optimization function in ZEMAX® to automatically optimize the surface of the QSS, the direction of incident light propagation can be adjusted. A non-coaxial reflective THz imaging system using a 0.1 THz continuous wave source demonstrates the ability of the QSS to improve the angle compatibility of the traditional THz reflective imaging system. The results show that the imaging angle compatibility range of the system can be increased to more than 5 times without changing the original imaging optical path and its resolution. In addition, it can also improve the imaging quality of the original imaging optical path for the object with a smooth surface or certain structure.

Abstract:Adoption of terahertz technologies is hindered by the lack of cost-effective THz sources. Here we demonstrate a fundamentally new way to generate and control THz radiation, via spatio-temporal emissivity modulation. By patterning the optical photoexcitation of a surface-passivated silicon wafer, we locally control the free-electron density, and thereby pattern the wafer's emissivity in the THz part of the electromagnetic spectrum. We show how this unconventional source of controllable THz radiation enables a new form of incoherent computational THz imaging. We use it to image various concealed objects, demonstrating this scheme has the penetrating capability of state-of-the-art THz imaging approaches, without the requirement of femto-second pulsed laser sources. Furthermore, the incoherent nature of thermal radiation also ensures the obtained images are free of interference artifacts. Our spatio-temporal emissivity control paves the way towards a new family of long-wavelength structured illumination, imaging and spectroscopy systems.

Abstract:This paper introduces a method for optimizing the terahertz (THz) imaging resolution in a specified field of view (FoV) for a scanning dual reflector system (Gregory or Cassegrain system) based on the theory of field curvature. The authors built a Gregory scanning system to verify the ability of this method. The operating frequency of the verification system is 220 GHz, the FoV at a specified distance of 8 m is approximately 50 cm * 100 cm, and the imaging resolution throughout the entire FoV is better than 3 cm. Experimental results show that the imaging resolution of the classical dual reflector system can be optimized, and the proposed verification system can realize active THz imaging of the human body. The system can switch between large beam THz imaging and tight-focusing THz imaging, which provides a method for implementing the integrated application of the system. Since the imaging is based on the traditional THz time-domain spectroscopy method, the spectral amplitude and phase information of the sample can be obtained simultaneously. The spectral resolution is about 15 GHz. A series of micromachining samples is measured and studied by using the system, and the performance of the imaging system is analyzed by using the micron structure. The results show the superiority of the real-time high-resolution terahertz spectral imaging system in terms of spatial resolution and imaging speed. Abstract:A novel active terahertz imaging scheme based on the combination of fan-beam scanning and aperture synthesized reconstruction techniques is presented. In the horizontal direction, high resolution is obtained by the narrow side of the fan-beam based on real aperture focusing with special pillbox-like quasi-optics. In the vertical direction, high resolution is achieved by the aperture synthesized focusing techniques based on the broad side of the fan-beam. Appropriate focusing algorithms are proposed both for the single-frequency 2-D case and wideband 3-D imaging. With a 0.2-THz heterodyne transceiver, a prototype imager is developed and proof-of-concept experiments are performed. The experimental results on the resolution, specular reflection, and concealed threat objects detection are given in detail, which demonstrate the performance of the proposed imaging scheme and its potential application for fast personnel screening.
