Abstract:Microresonator Kerr frequency combs could provide miniaturised solutions for a wide range of applications. Many of these applications however require further manipulation of the generated frequency comb signal using photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity (χ(2)). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete components due to material limitations, which comes at the expense of extra system complexity and increased optical losses. Here we demonstrate the generation, filtering and electro-optic modulation of a frequency comb on a single monolithic integrated chip, using a nanophotonic lithium-niobate platform that simultaneously possesses large electro-optic (χ(2)) and Kerr (χ(3)) nonlinearities, and low optical losses. We generate broadband Kerr frequency combs using a dispersion-engineered high-Q lithium-niobate microresonator, select a single comb line using an electrically programmable add-drop filter, and modulate the intensity of the selected line. Our results pave the way towards monolithic integrated frequency comb solutions for spectroscopy, data communication, ranging and quantum photonics.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have revolutionized frequency metrology and timekeeping, and can be used in a wide range of optical technologies. Advances are under way that allow dramatic miniaturization of optical frequency combs using Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, where broadband and coherent optical frequency combs can be generated from a continuous wave laser. Such `microcombs', provide a broad bandwidth with low power consumption, unprecedented form factor, wafer scale fabrication compatibility. For future high volume applications, integration and electrical pumping of soliton microcombs is essential. To date, however, microcombs still rely on optical pumping by bulk external laser modules that provide the required coherence, frequency agility and power levels for soliton formation. Electrically-driven, chip-integrated microcombs are inhibited by the high threshold power for soliton formation, typically exceeding the power of integrated silicon based lasers, and the required frequency agility for soliton initiation. Recent advances in high-Q Si3N4 microresonators suggest that electrically driven soliton microcombs are possible. Here we demonstrate an electrically-driven, chip-integrated soliton microcomb by coupling an indium phosphide (III-V) multiple-longitudinal-mode laser diode chip to a high-Q Si3N4 photonic integrated microresonator. We observe that self-injection locking of the laser diode to the microresonator, which is accompanied by a x1000 fold narrowing of the laser linewidth, can simultaneously initiate the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons. By tuning the current, we observe a transition from modulation instability, breather solitons to single soliton states. The system requires less than 1 Watt of electrical power, operates at electronically-detectable sub-100 GHz mode spacing and can fit in a volume of ca. 1cm3.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs are indispensable links between the optical and microwave domains, enabling a wide range of applications including precision spectroscopy, ultrastable frequency generation, and timekeeping. Chip-scale integration miniaturizes bulk implementations onto photonic chips, offering highly compact, stable, and power-efficient frequency comb sources. State of the art integrated frequency comb sources are based on resonantly-enhanced Kerr effect and, more recently, on electro-optic effect. While the former can routinely reach octave-spanning bandwidths and the latter feature microwave-rate spacings, achieving both in the same material platform has been challenging. Here, we leverage both strong Kerr nonlinearity and efficient electro-optic phase modulation available in the ultralow-loss thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform, to demonstrate a hybrid Kerr-electro-optic frequency comb with stabilized spacing. In our approach, a dissipative Kerr soliton is first generated, and then electro-optic division is used to realize a frequency comb with 2,589 comb lines spaced by 29.308 GHz and spanning 75.9 THz (588 nm) end-to-end. Further, we demonstrate electronic stabilization and control of the soliton spacing, naturally facilitated by our approach. The broadband, microwave-rate comb in this work overcomes the spacing-span tradeoff that exists in all integrated frequency comb sources, and paves the way towards chip-scale solutions for complex tasks such as laser spectroscopy covering multiple bands, micro- and millimeter-wave generation, and massively parallel optical communications.

Abstract:Solitons in microresonators have spurred intriguing nonlinear optical physics and photonic applications. Here, by combining Kerr and Brillouin nonlinearities in an over-modal microcavity, we demonstrate spatial multiplexing of soliton microcombs under a single external laser pumping operation. This demonstration offers an ideal scheme to realize highly coherent dual-comb sources in a compact, low-cost and energy-efficient manner, with uniquely low beating noise. Moreover, by selecting the dual-comb modes, the repetition rate difference of a dual-comb pair could be flexibly switched, ranging from 8.5 to 212 MHz. Beyond dual-comb, the high-density mode geometry allows the cascaded Brillouin lasers, driving the co-generation of up to 5 space-multiplexing frequency combs in distinct mode families. Abstract:Kerr soliton microcombs have recently emerged as a prominent topic in integrated photonics and have enabled new horizons for optical frequency metrology. Kerr soliton microcombs, as the name suggests, are based on high-order cubic optical nonlinearity. It is desirable to exploit quadratic photonic materials, namely Pockels materials, for soliton generation and on-chip implementation of 1<i>f</i>–2<i>f</i> comb self-referencing. Such quadratically driven solitons have been proposed theoretically, but have not yet been observed in a nanophotonic platform, despite recent progress in quadratic comb generation in free-space and crystalline resonators. Here, we report photonic-chip-based Pockels microcomb solitons driven by three-wave mixing in an aluminium nitride microring resonator. In contrast to typical Kerr solitons, the Pockels soliton features unity soliton generation fidelity, two-by-two evolution of multi-soliton states, favourable tuning dynamics and high pump-to-soliton conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have a wide range of applications in science and technology 1 . An important development for miniature and integrated comb systems is the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons in coherently pumped high-quality-factor optical microresonators 2 – 9 . Such soliton microcombs 10 have been applied to spectroscopy 11 – 13 , the search for exoplanets 14 , 15 , optical frequency synthesis 16 , time keeping 17 and other areas 10 . In addition, the recent integration of microresonators with lasers has revealed the viability of fully chip-based soliton microcombs 18 , 19 . However, the operation of microcombs requires complex startup and feedback protocols that necessitate difficult-to-integrate optical and electrical components, and microcombs operating at rates that are compatible with electronic circuits—as is required in nearly all comb systems—have not yet been integrated with pump lasers because of their high power requirements. Here we experimentally demonstrate and theoretically describe a turnkey operation regime for soliton microcombs co-integrated with a pump laser. We show the appearance of an operating point at which solitons are immediately generated by turning the pump laser on, thereby eliminating the need for photonic and electronic control circuitry. These features are combined with high-quality-factor Si 3 N 4 resonators to provide microcombs with repetition frequencies as low as 15 gigahertz that are fully integrated into an industry standard (butterfly) package, thereby offering compelling advantages for high-volume production.

Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.

Abstract:Laser frequency combs are enabling some of the most exciting scientific endeavours in the 21st century, ranging from the development of optical clocks to the calibration of the astronomical spectrographs used for searching Earth-like exoplanets. Today, dissipative Kerr solitons generated in microresonators offer the prospect of attaining frequency combs in miniaturized systems by capitalizing on advances in photonic integration. Most of the applications based on soliton microcombs rely on tuning a continuous-wave laser into a longitudinal mode of a microresonator whose dimensions are engineered to display anomalous dispersion at the pump laser frequency. In this configuration, however, nonlinear physics precludes from attaining dissipative Kerr solitons with high power conversion efficiency, with typical comb powers amounting to ~1% of the available laser power. Here, we demonstrate that this fundamental limitation can be overcome by inducing a controllable frequency shift to a selected cavity resonance. Experimentally, we realize this shift using two linearly coupled anomalous-dispersion microresonators (a photonic molecule), resulting in a coherent dissipative Kerr soliton with a conversion efficiency exceeding 50% and excellent line spacing stability. We describe the physical soliton dynamics in this configuration, and discover the system displays unusual characteristics, such as the possibility to backwards initiate solitons and stable operation with a blue detuned pump laser. By optimizing the microcomb power available on chip, these results facilitate the practical implementation of a scalable integrated photonic architecture for energy-efficient applications.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons from optical microresonators, commonly referred to as soliton microcombs, have been developed for a broad range of applications, including precision measurement, optical frequency synthesis, and ultra-stable microwave and millimeter wave generation, all on a chip. An important goal for microcombs is self-referencing, which requires octave-spanning bandwidths to detect and stabilize the comb carrier envelope offset frequency. Further, detection and locking of the comb spacings are often achieved using frequency division by electro-optic modulation. The thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform, with its low loss, strong second- and third-order nonlinearities, as well as large Pockels effect, is ideally suited for these tasks. However, octave-spanning soliton microcombs are challenging to demonstrate on this platform, largely complicated by strong Raman effects hindering reliable fabrication of soliton devices. Here, we demonstrate entirely connected and octave-spanning soliton microcombs on thin-film lithium niobate. With appropriate control over microresonator free spectral range and dissipation spectrum, we show that soliton-inhibiting Raman effects are suppressed, and soliton devices are fabricated with near-unity yield. Our work offers an unambiguous method for soliton generation on strongly Raman-active materials. Further, it anticipates monolithically integrated, self-referenced frequency standards in conjunction with established technologies, such as periodically poled waveguides and electro-optic modulators, on thin-film lithium niobate.

Abstract:Soliton crystal microcombs, as a new type of Kerr frequency comb, offer advantages such as higher energy conversion efficiency and a simpler generation mechanism compared to those of traditional soliton microcombs. They have a wide range of applications in fields like microwave photonics, ultra-high-speed optical communication, and photonic neural networks. In this review, we discuss the recent developments regarding soliton crystal microcombs and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of generating soliton crystal microcombs utilizing different mechanisms. First, we briefly introduce the numerical model of optical frequency combs. Then, we introduce the generation schemes for soliton crystal microcombs based on various mechanisms, such as utilizing an avoided mode crossing, harmonic modulation, bi-chromatic pumping, and the use of saturable absorbers. Finally, we discuss the progress of research on soliton crystal microcombs in the fields of microwave photonics, optical communication, and photonic neural networks. We also discuss the challenges and perspectives regarding soliton crystal microcombs.

Abstract:Kerr optical frequency combs with multi-gigahertz spacing have previously been demonstrated in chip-scale microresonators, with potential applications in coherent communication, spectroscopy, arbitrary waveform generation, and radio frequency photonic oscillators. In general, the harmonics of a frequency comb are identically polarized in a single microresonator. In this work, we report that one comb in one polarization is generated by an orthogonally polarized soliton comb and two low-noise, orthogonally polarized combs interact with each other and exist simultaneously in a single microresonator. The second comb generation is attributed to the strong cross-phase modulation with the orthogonally polarized soliton comb and the high peak power of the intracavity soliton pulse. Experimental results show that a second frequency comb is excited even when a continuous wave light as a "seed"-with power as low as 0.1 mW-is input, while its own power level is below the threshold of comb generation. Moreover, the second comb has a concave envelope, which is different from the sech2 envelope of the soliton comb. This is due to the frequency mismatch between the harmonics and the resonant frequency. We also find that the repetition rates of these two combs coincide, although two orthogonal resonant modes are characterized by different free spectral ranges.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs—phase-locked microcavity frequency combs—have become the foundation of several classical technologies in integrated photonics, including spectroscopy, LiDAR and optical computing. Despite the predicted multimode entanglement across the comb, experimental study of the quantum optics of the soliton microcomb has been elusive. In this work we use second-order photon correlations to study the underlying quantum processes of soliton microcombs in an integrated silicon carbide microresonator. We show that a stable temporal lattice of solitons can isolate a multimode below-threshold Gaussian state from any admixture of coherent light, and predict that all-to-all entanglement can be realized for the state. Our work opens a pathway toward a soliton-based multimode quantum resource.

Mechanically actuated Kerr soliton microcombs

Abstract:Mode-locked ultrashort pulse sources with a repetition rate of up to several tens of gigahertz greatly facilitate versatile photonic applications such as frequency synthesis, metrology, radar, and optical communications. Dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs provide an attractive solution as a broadband, high-repetition-rate compact laser system in this context. However, its operation usually requires sophisticated pump laser control to initiate and stabilize the soliton microcombs, particularly in millimeter-sized ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery resonators. Here, we realize a mechanically actuated soliton microcomb oscillator with a microwave repetition rate of 15 GHz. This enables direct soliton initiation, long-term stabilization, and fine tuning, where the operation now lifts the prerequisite pump laser tunability that must be relaxed if the technology is to be widely used outside the laboratory environment. We reveal the prospects for using this method with a wide range of applications that would benefit from mechanical soliton actuation such as optical clocks, spectral extension, and dual-comb spectroscopy.

Abstract:Abstract The rapidly maturing integrated Kerr microcombs show significant potential for microwave photonics. Yet, state-of-the-art microcomb-based radiofrequency filters have required programmable pulse shapers, which inevitably increase the system cost, footprint, and complexity. Here, by leveraging the smooth spectral envelope of single solitons, we demonstrate microcomb-based radiofrequency filters free from any additional pulse shaping. More importantly, we achieve all-optical reconfiguration of the radiofrequency filters by exploiting the intrinsically rich soliton configurations. Specifically, we harness the perfect soliton crystals to multiply the comb spacing thereby dividing the filter passband frequencies. Also, the versatile spectral interference patterns of two solitons enable wide reconfigurability of filter passband frequencies, according to their relative azimuthal angles within the round-trip. The proposed schemes demand neither an interferometric setup nor another pulse shaper for filter reconfiguration, providing a simplified synthesis of widely reconfigurable microcomb-based radiofrequency filters.

Abstract:We demonstrate SiC-based soliton microcombs operated at room temperature - a key step for integrated SiC nonlinear photonics for frequency metrology applications. We have successfully routed and switched among different soliton states using an auxiliary laser to optically counteract the thermo-optic effect. In addition to single soliton generation, we further observe a wideband comb spectra translation from near-infrared to visible via the second-order nonlinearity, key for the realization of on-chip f -to-2f self-referencing,
