Abstract:We give an explicit sequence of polarizations such that for every measurable function, the sequence of iterated polarizations converge to the symmetric rearrangement of the initial function.

Abstract:The paper has two main goals. The first is to take a new approach to rearrangements on certain classes of measurable real-valued functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Rearrangements are maps that are monotonic (up to sets of measure zero) and equimeasurable, i.e., they preserve the measure of super-level sets of functions. All the principal known symmetrization processes for functions, such as Steiner and Schwarz symmetrization, are rearrangements, and these have a multitude of applications in diverse areas of the mathematical sciences. The second goal is to understand which properties of rearrangements characterize polarization, a special rearrangement that has proved particularly useful in a number of contexts. In order to achieve this, new results are obtained on the structure of measure-preserving maps on convex bodies and of rearrangements generally.

Abstract:The paper deals with two notions: polarized partition relations and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give pure combinatorial proof that existence of product of generalized strong sequences is equivalent to polarized partition relations.

Abstract:We prove a comparison theorem for the averages of the solutions of two exterior parabolic problems, the second being the "symmetrization" of the first one, by using approximation of the Schwarz symmetrization by polarizations, as it was introduced in [4]. This comparison provides an alternative proof, based on PDEs, of the isoperimetric inequality for the Wiener sausage, which was proved in [14].

Abstract:This paper describes a method for the explicit reconstruction and visualization of various polarization ellipses from the intensities measured after a rotating polarizer. The state of polarization of a light beam is represented by the variation of the electric field amplitude vector with polar angle in the laboratory coordinate system defined by the experimental set-up. The intensity of the light beam measured after passing through a rotating polarizer gives the estimate of the wave electric field component parallel to the polarizer pass axis averaged over a time period. The formulae for the estimation of orthogonal field component and polar angle, in the polarizer coordinate system have been derived. Both the orthogonally polarized components and the polar angle are functions of ellipse parameters that have been deduced from the intensity measurements. Finally, the resultant electric field and the polar angle are mapped to the laboratory coordinate system and compared with the representation of the polarization ellipse obtained from the Stokes vectors.

Abstract:We consider the Lie derivative along Killing vector fields of the Dirac relativistic spinors: by using the polar decomposition we acquire the mean to study the implementation of symmetries on Dirac fields. Specifically, we will become able to examine under what conditions it is equivalent to impose a symmetry upon a spinor or only upon its observables. For one physical application, we discuss the role of the above analysis for the specific spherical symmetry, obtaining some no-go theorem regarding spinors and discussing the generality of our approach.

Abstract:Within the framework of mappings between affine spaces, the notion of nth polarization of a function will lead to an intrinsic characterization of polynomial functions. We prove that the characteristic features of derivations, such as linearity, iterability, Leibniz and chain rules are shared – at the finite level – by the polarization operators. We give these results by means of explicit general formulae, which are valid at any order n, and are based on combinatorial identities. The infinitesimal limits of the nth polarizations of a function will yield its nth derivatives (without resorting to the usual recursive definition), and the afore-mentioned properties will be recovered directly in the limit. Polynomial functions will allow us to produce a coordinate free version of Taylor's formula.

Almost Symmetric Schur Functions

Abstract:We introduce and study a generalization $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ of the Schur functions called the almost symmetric Schur functions. These functions simultaneously generalize the finite variable key polynomials and the infinite variable Schur functions. They form a homogeneous basis for the space of almost symmetric functions and are defined using a family of recurrences involving the isobaric divided difference operators and limits of Weyl symmetrization operators. The $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ are the $q=t=0$ specialization of the stable limit non-symmetric Macdonald functions $\widetilde{E}_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ defined by the author in previous work. We find a combinatorial formula for these functions simultaneously generalizing well known formulas for the Schur functions and the key polynomials. Further, we prove positivity results for the coefficients of the almost symmetric Schur functions expanded into the monomial basis and into the monomial-Schur basis of the space of almost symmetric functions. The latter positivity result follows after realizing the almost symmetric Schur functions $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ as limits of characters of representations of parabolic subgroups in type $GL.$

Abstract:Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.

Symmetry Protected Invariant Scattering Properties for Arbitrary Polarizations

Abstract:Polarization independent Mie scattering of building blocks is foundational for constructions of optical systems with robust functionalities. Conventional studies for such polarization independence are generally restricted to special states of either linear or circular polarizations, widely neglecting elliptically-polarized states that are generically present in realistic applications. Here we present a comprehensive recipe to achieve invariant scattering properties (including extinction, scattering and absorption) for arbitrary polarizations, requiring only rotation symmetry and absence of optical activities. It is discovered that sole rotation symmetries can effectively decouple the two scattering channels that originate from the incident circularly polarized waves of opposite handedness, leading to invariance of all scattering properties for any polarizations on the same latitude circle of the Poincaré sphere. Further incorporations of extra inversion or mirror symmetries would eliminate the optical activities and thus ensure scattering property invariance for arbitrary polarizations. In sharp contrast to previous investigations that rely heavily on complicated algebraic formulas, our arguments are fully intuitive and geometric, bringing to surface the essential physical principles rather than obscuring them. The all-polarization invariance we reveal is induced by discrete spatial symmetries of the scattering configurations, underlying which there are functioning laws of reciprocity and conservation of parity and helicity. This symmetry-protected intrinsic invariance is robust against any symmetry-preserving perturbations, which may render extra flexibilities for designing optical devices with stable functionalities.

Abstract:Permutation-invariant, -equivariant, and -covariant functions and anti-symmetric functions are important in quantum physics, computer vision, and other disciplines. Applications often require most or all of the following properties: (a) a large class of such functions can be approximated, e.g. all continuous function, (b) only the (anti)symmetric functions can be represented, (c) a fast algorithm for computing the approximation, (d) the representation itself is continuous or differentiable, (e) the architecture is suitable for learning the function from data. (Anti)symmetric neural networks have recently been developed and applied with great success. A few theoretical approximation results have been proven, but many questions are still open, especially for particles in more than one dimension and the anti-symmetric case, which this work focusses on. More concretely, we derive natural polynomial approximations in the symmetric case, and approximations based on a single generalized Slater determinant in the anti-symmetric case. Unlike some previous super-exponential and discontinuous approximations, these seem a more promising basis for future tighter bounds. We provide a complete and explicit universality proof of the Equivariant MultiLayer Perceptron, which implies universality of symmetric MLPs and the FermiNet.

Abstract:We observe quantum, Hong-Ou-Mandel, interference of fields produced by two remote atomic memories. High-visibility interference is obtained by utilizing the finite atomic memory time in four-photon delayed coincidence measurements. Interference of fields from remote atomic memories is a crucial element in protocols for scalable generation of multi-node remote qubit entanglement.

Abstract:We continue the study initiated by H. S. Shapiro on Fischer decompositions of entire functions, showing that such decomposition exist in a weak sense (we do not prove uniqueness) under hypotheses regarding the order of the entire function $f$ to be expressed as $f= P\cdot q+r$, the polynomial $P$, and bounds on the apolar norm of homogeneous polynomials of degree $m$.

Abstract:Recently, a family of unconventional integrators for ODEs with polynomial vector fields was proposed, based on the polarization of vector fields. The simplest instance is the by now famous Kahan discretization for quadratic vector fields. All these integrators seem to possess remarkable conservation properties. In particular, it has been proved that, when the underlying ODE is Hamiltonian, its polarization discretization possesses an integral of motion and an invariant volume form. In this note, we propose a new algebraic approach to derivation of the integrals of motion for polarization discretizations.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 1, Page 454-473, February 2024. This paper studies highly oscillatory solutions to a class of systems of semilinear hyperbolic equations with a small parameter, in a setting that includes Klein–Gordon equations and the Maxwell–Lorentz system. The interest here is in solutions that are polarized in the sense that up to a small error, the oscillations in the solution depend on only one of the frequencies that satisfy the dispersion relation with a given wave vector appearing in the initial wave packet. The construction and analysis of such polarized solutions is done using modulated Fourier expansions. This approach includes higher harmonics and yields approximations to polarized solutions that are of arbitrary order in the small parameter, going well beyond the known first-order approximation via a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The given construction of polarized solutions is explicit, uses in addition a linear Schrödinger equation for each further order of approximation, and is accessible to direct numerical approximation.

Invariant holonomic systems on symmetric spaces and other polar representations

Abstract:Let $V$ be a symmetric space over a connected reductive Lie algebra $G$, with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and discriminant $\delta\in \mathbb{C}[V]$. A fundamental object is the invariant holonomic system $\mathcal{G} =\mathcal{D}(V)\Big/ \Bigl(\mathcal{D}(V)\mathfrak{g}+ \mathcal{D}(V)(\mathrm{Sym}\, V)^G_+ \Bigr) $ over the ring of differential operators $\mathcal{D}(V)$. Jointly with Levasseur we have shown that there exists a surjective radial parts map $\mathrm{rad}$ from $ \mathcal{D}(V)^G$ to the spherical subalgebra $A_{\kappa}$ of a Cherednik algebra. When $A_{\kappa}$ is simple we show that $\mathcal{G}$ has no $\delta$-torsion submodule nor factor module and we determine when $\mathcal{G}$ is semisimple, thereby answering questions of Sekiguchi, respectively Levasseur-Stafford. In the diagonal case when $V=\mathfrak{g}$, these results reduce to fundamental theorems of Harish-Chandra and Hotta-Kashiwara. We generalise these results to polar representations $V$ satisfying natural conditions. By twisting the radial parts map, we obtain families of invariant holonomic systems. We introduce shift functors between the different twists. We show that the image of the simple summands of $\mathcal{G} $ under these functors is described by Opdam's KZ-twist.

Abstract:We discuss the space VPS ( Q , H ) of ideals with Hilbert function H=(1,n,n,...) that are apolar to a full rank quadric Q . We prove that its components of saturated ideals are closely related to the locus of Gorenstein algebras and to the Slip component in border apolarity. We also point out an important error in [ Citation 20 ] and provide the necessary corrections.
