Abstract:Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to convert from the quasisymmetric function expansion of a symmetric function to the Schur function expansion. Specifically, Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave a combinatorial formula in their paper, which can represent a homogeneous symmetric function \(P(X)\) as a linear combination of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions \(F_{\alpha}(X)\): \[P(X)=\sum_{\alpha\models n}a_{\alpha}F_{\alpha}(X)\] Then, they showed how to convert this expansion into a linear combination of Schur functions \(s_{\lambda}(X)\): \[P(X)=\sum_{\lambda\vdash n}b_{\lambda}s_{\lambda}(X)\] The main contribution of this paper is to provide a simpler proof method, showing that when a symmetric function \(P(X)\) has been represented as a linear combination of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions \(F_{\alpha}(X)\), the Schur function expansion of \(P(X)\) can be obtained by directly replacing each \(F_{\alpha}(X)\) with the Schur function \(s_{\alpha}(X)\) of the same composition \(\alpha\) and then making appropriate arrangements. This result simplifies the conversion process from quasisymmetric functions to Schur functions and has been successfully applied in the study of Schur - positivity problems.
