Abstract:Synthetic polymers have shown a great impact on every aspect of our life and attained an exponential rise in their production and utilization in the past decades due to their durability, flexibility, moldability, and inexpensive nature. However, the use of natural polymers or development of safe and environment-friendly synthetic bio-based polymers is continuously undergoing for a sustainable future owing to the exhaustion of petroleum-based resources or fossil-based materials, disposal and economical concerns, including government guidelines. In this regard, the development of new sustainable polymers or materials will step up and build a genuinely circular economy by decreasing manufacture or utilization of fossil-based materials as limited reserves.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem addressed in this paper is the development and application of sustainable polymers. With the increasing environmental pollution caused by traditional petrochemical-based polymers, researchers are seeking alternative solutions to reduce reliance on fossil resources and achieve a circular economy. The challenges mentioned in the paper include the unbalanced manufacturing process of polymers, their non-degradability, and their environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. Scientists are dedicated to developing sustainable polymers derived from renewable and waste materials, which can be biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable, in order to alleviate the environmental burden. The article introduces different research on the design, performance improvement, and potential applications of novel sustainable polymers, such as in wound healing, food packaging, marine antifouling, carbon nanotube separation, and epoxy resin curing agent substitution. These research efforts aim to balance the benefits and adverse effects of plastic materials, driving progress in the field of sustainable polymers.
