Abstract:Bimagnetic Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite is synthesized in aqueous solution. The nanoparticles are characterized with TEM, FTIR, and magnetic measurements. The as-synthesized nanocomposite exhibits ferromagnetic properties at room temperature due to the exchange coupling between Pt3Co and Fe3O4. Magnetic properties of Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticle can be tuned by varying of the molar ratio of iron to platinum. Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibit higher saturation magnetization when the molar ratio of iron to platinum is 1.

Abstract:Cobalt and cobalt oxide aerogels present materials solutions to challenges in energy, sensing, and catalysis via their high porosities and surface areas, low densities, and their magnetic and electrochemical properties. Traditional synthesis methods suffer limitations including aggregation, a need for templates, and slow reactant diffusion times. We present a magnetic-field assisted synthesis to prepare cobalt nanowire (CoNW) aerogels which allows rapid CoNW growth, is scalable, and does not require templates. A variable magnetic field allowed tuning of the CoNW structural properties with higher applied fields favoring longer CoNWs and higher aspect ratios. Thermal annealing allowed conversion of the CoNWs to Co3O4. The applied field strength and annealing parameters also influenced the surface areas, pore volumes, magnetizations, coercivities, and specific capacitances. This work demonstrates the magnetic-field assisted synthesis as a fast and scalable strategy to produce CoNW aerogels with tunable nanostructure, material phase, magneto-responsiveness, and accessible surface area for electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements were used to investigate highly porous silica aerogels containing iron and cobalt or iron and nickel, calcined at 450 degrees C, which are intermediates in the formation of CoFe2O4-SiO2 and NiFe2O4-SiO2 aerogel nanocomposites. Aerogels without iron and pure Co and Ni silicate hydroxides were also studied. The aerogel samples containing iron and cobalt or iron and nickel present two separate phases, one containing iron in the form of ferrihydrite and the other either Co or Ni silicate hydroxides. The silicate hydroxides are present in the aerogels in form of nanoparticles with a one-dimensional appearance in electron microscopy images, which are therefore anisotropic nanostructures, such as nanoneedles or nanosheets. The study of the magnetic properties indicates that the coercivity is greatly modified by size and shape of the particles going from pure Co or Ni silicate hydroxides to the aerogel samples containing only nickel or only cobalt. Finally, in the samples also containing iron, the total magnetic behavior is influenced both by the presence of ferrihydrite and by the possible diffusion of iron in the nanostructures of cobalt or nickel silicate hydroxide.
Synthesis of Monodispersed Fe3O4 Magnetite Nanoparticles by ethylene glycol solvothermal method

Abstract:Monodispersed Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via a simple solvothermal method, in which Fe(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O was used as the starting materials, KOH as the mineralizer, and ethylene glycol (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were employed to characterize the phase composition, transmission electron microscope (TEM) to observe the morphology and the particle size, and physical property measurement system (PPMS) to investigate the magnetic property of the synthesized powders, respectively. The synthesized Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles are of 50-100nm in size, and of notable ferromagnetic property. The saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, and coercive field are 68.8emu.g(-1), 12.9emu.g(-1), 138.5Oe, respectively. Based on the experimental resuts, the formation mechanism and the well monodispersed reason of the solvothersized Fe3O4 nanoparticles are discussed.

Abstract:The potential of aerogels as catalysts for the synthesis of a relevant class of bis-heterocyclic compounds such as bis(indolyl)methanes was investigated. In particular, the studied catalyst was a nanocomposite aerogel based on nanocrystalline nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) dispersed on amorphous porous silica aerogel obtained by two-step sol-gel synthesis followed by gel drying under supercritical conditions and calcination treatments. It was found that the NiFe2O4/SiO2 aerogel is an active catalyst for the selected reaction, enabling high conversions at room temperature, and it proved to be active for three repeated runs. The catalytic activity can be ascribed to both the textural and acidic features of the silica matrix and of the nanocrystalline ferrite. In addition, ferrite nanocrystals provide functionality for magnetic recovery of the catalyst from the crude mixture, enabling time-effective separation from the reaction environment. Evidence of the retention of species involved in the reaction into the catalyst is also pointed out, likely due to the porosity of the aerogel together with the affinity of some species towards the silica matrix. Our work contributes to the study of aerogels as catalysts for organic reactions by demonstrating their potential as well as limitations for the room-temperature synthesis of bis(indolyl)methanes.

Abstract:Magnetic ferrite materials have been extensively studied for a range of technological applications, such as magnetic motors, recording media, and millimetre-wave devices. In this context, the nanosized epsilon phase of Fe2O3 (-Fe2O3) attracts significant attention due to its high coercive field at room temperature. Here, we report the in-situ aerogel nanoreactor growth of magnetic -Fe2O3 nanoparticles, exhibiting a coercive field (Hc) of 4000 Oe. We show that the control of nanoreactor plays an important role in the growth of -Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The findings provide a versatile reaction pathway for the growth of magnetically hard ferrite nanoparticles.

Low-Temperature Synthesis of Superparamagnetic Nanocomposite Particles Composed of Platinum and Maghemite

Abstract:Superparamagnetic nanocomposite particles composed of maghemite nanocrystal (ca.15 nm) and deposited Pt nanoclusters (ca. 2.5 nm) were synthesized by a low temperature catalytic method. The magnetic properties of iron oxides species can be easily tuned with different redox atmosphere in the presence of Pt nanoclusters. In this convenient preparation, Pt nanoclusters were first captured on Fe(OH)(3) nanoparticles by electrostatic interaction. Then at 80 'C the Fe(OH)(3) nanoparticles was catalytically reduced with glycol acid to Fe2O3 nanophase which were finally catalytically oxidized to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) nanophase in the air at 80 degrees C. The as-synthesized Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposites were well characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements. Reversible and efficient transformation between the Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposites was realized at 80 degrees C. The Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposite particles modified with oleic acid were easily dispersed in nonpolar solvents such as hexane, resulting in stable ferrofluids.

Abstract:In this work, the core-shell FePt@Fe3O4 nanowires and nanoparticles as a new hard-soft composite magnetic materials were synthetized by reduction of platinum acetyl acetonate and iron pentacarbonyl together in the presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine stabilizers by polyol process. As-synthesized FePt nanowires and nanoparticles with 0.5-3 nm Fe3O4 shell were preparated by controlled addition of excess of Fe(CO)(5) into the reaction mixture and air oxidation. The phase analysis, structure, and magnetic properties were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques.

Abstract:The nanoparticles of the magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 were produced using a modified Stöber approach and functionalized with (3-amino-propyl) APTES triethoxysilane and ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA). Magnetic nano adsorbents exhibit many attractive opportunities for different purposes due to their easy removal and possibility of reusing these nanoparticles. The ligands grafting was chemically stable and did not affect the morphology or substrate structure appreciably. APTES-EDTA microspheres were formed for the removal from aqueous solution solutions of trivalent rare earth elements ions since the REEs have a strong oxygen affinity. The advantages of the SiO2 shell that covers the magnetite nanoparticles include lower specific weight and a larger grafting density compared to other surfaces, improving the resistance to acidic environments. Different techniques have described the particle size, morphology, precise surface area and surface alteration including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results show that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average particle size of 15 ± 3 nm were successfully synthesized at pH=11, at 25 °C temperature. Moreover, The nanoparticles prepared for Fe3O4 were coated with amorphous SiO2 and functionalized with amino and carboxylic groups.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were synthesized by irradiating micro-emulsions containing iron salts with energetic electrons. The properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selective area diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. It was found that formation of superparamagnetic nanoparticles begins at a dose of 50 kGy, though these particles show low crystallinity, and a higher portion is amorphous. With increasing doses, an increasing crystallinity and yield could be observed, which is reflected in an increasing saturation magnetization. The blocking temperature and effective anisotropy constant were determined via zero-field cooling and field cooling measurements. The particles tend to form clusters with a size of 34 nm to 73 nm. Magnetite/maghemite nanoparticles could be identified via selective area electron diffraction patterns. Additionally, goethite nanowires could be observed.

Abstract:Metallic aerogels emerge as a group of materials for various applications since they exhibit the merits of both metal and aerogel. However, their performance characteristics are largely depreciated by the poor compressibility, elasticity, and complicated preparation process. Herein, a highly compressible and air-dryable nickel nanowire aerogel (NNWA) is prepared via a facile magnetic-field-assisted gelation strategy. Its unique anisotropic lamellar structure and abundant cold-welded junctions of intertwined nanowires enable superior electric conductivity and compression fatigue resistance. Such a free-standing NNWA featured with ultralow density (20 mg cm(-3)) can be directly used as electrode scaffolds for energy storage and electrocatalysis purposes even at high mass loading (e.g., 10 mg cm(-2)) and large current density (e.g., 1 A cm(-2)) with superior performance. This method represents a general strategy for producing metallic aerogels with excellent comprehensive performance and mass-production capability, providing a versatile platform for advanced applications.
Ferrocene Introduced into 5-Methylresorcinol-Based Organic Aerogels

Abstract:The polycondensation sol–gel reaction of 5-methylresocinol and formaldehyde with additional compounds in reaction media is a relatively simple way to produce modified aerogels. In order to obtain aerogels with a large surface area and high porosity, the conditions for gel formation, the solvent exchange process before drying, and the supercritical drying process were optimized. A successful attempt was made to introduce ferrocene units into 5-methylresocinol-formaldehyde-based aerogels. The resulting aerogels are amorphous substrates, and no aggregated ferrocene units were found in their structures. All of the aerogel samples that were obtained are structurally similar despite differences in the original ferrocene units and their initial concentration. It was found that the inclusion limit of ferrocene structural blocks into an aerogel is ~6% wt. The structures of the inclusions in which all of the Fe atoms in the aerogel substrates were present in ferrocene/ferrocenium at an approximate ratio of 60/40 to 55/45 were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Aerogels with ferrocene/ferrocenium inclusions are likely to exhibit reversible redox activity in reactions with gaseous reagents.

Abstract:In this work we present a controllable synthesis of hollow nanostructures of alpha-Fe2O3 by a facile hydrothermal route using FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O as the iron source and NH4H2PO4 as the shape-directing agent. We found that the morphology of alpha-Fe2O3 experienced a continuous change from thin nanospindles to flat nanodisks via finely tuning the phosphate ion concentration due to the selective absorption of phosphate ions onto the Fe2O3 nanostructures. At a given phosphate ion concentration, prolonging the reaction time led to the formation of hollow nanostructures (nanotubes, nanobeads, and nanorings) due to the dissolution and re-crystallization of Fe2O3. We also found that morphology-preserved conversion from alpha-Fe2O3 to magnetic Fe3O4/C can be achieved during the CVD reactions in C2H2. The Fe3O4/C nanocomposites with uniformly coated carbon layers exhibited morphology-dependent magnetic properties.

Abstract:Magnetic carbon-based aerogels are nowadays a kind of emerging candidates for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbing materials (EWAMs), because their unique structural advantages lay a good foundation for the propagation and attenuation of electromagnetic (EM) wave. However, traditional post-treatment methods for magnetic carbon-based aerogels often face difficulties in maintaining aerogel structure, regulating the content of magnetic components, and dispersing magnetic particles. Herein, we first induce a topological deformation of bulky Ni-MOF particles to generate Ni-MOF aerogel assembled by crosslinked fibers, and then convert this intermediate aerogel to final Ni/C composite aerogels (NCCAs) through controllable high-temperature pyrolysis. This novel strategy achieves high loading and uniform dispersion of magnetic metal nanoparticles throughout carbon skeleton. Pyrolysis temperature plays a very important role to determine the overall attenuation capability and impedance matching of NCCAs, because it has a remarkable impact on the dielectric loss of carbon skeleton but negligible effect on magnetic loss. When the temperature is 700 °C, the optimum product (NCCA-2) will show the best EM absorption performance among this series of composites, including strong reflection loss and broad effective absorption bandwidth. Surprisingly, the integrated advantages of aerogel structure and MOFs transformation not only render NCCA-2 as a highly competitive candidate for high-performance EWAMs as compared with various Ni/C composites, but also bestow it on excellent hydrophobic and thermal insulation properties.
The preparation of super lightweight magnetic Fe3O4/graphene/carbon aerogels and their use in electromagnetic interference shielding

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4/graphene/carbon aerogels were prepared by the sol-gel method, followed by supercritical drying and pyrolysis. The microstructures, electrical properties and electromagnetic interference shielding performance of the aerogels were investigated. The aerogels were crushed into a fine powder with a bimodal particle size distribution (~0.1 and 10μm) and released into a chamber to a particle concentration of 1 gm-3 atroom temperature under atmosphere pressure using a dispensing device, where electromagnetic interference shieldingwas tested. Results indicate that the composite aerogels have high conductivity and a hierarchical pore structure with a density as low as 0.015 g cm-3. The concentration of the fine powder in the chamber decreased with time and levelled off above 20 min. The shielding is dominated by the particles that are difficult to settle due to their perturbation by air. The shielding for the visible wave band of the composite aerogels in powder form initially and after the release for 30 min are above 99.90% and 98.77%, respectively. Those for 3-5 μm and 8-12 μm infrared light are respectively 99.55% and 99.35% initially, and 99.05% and 96.79% after the release for 30 min. For the millimeter wave band, the shielding ratios initially and after the release for 30 min are above 83.68% and 82.54%, respectively.

Preparation and Characterization of Magnetic Nanoparticles/SiO2 Porous Composite Xerogels

Abstract:A magnetic porous aerogel composite was preparedvia a sol–gel method and in–situ synthesis of Ni/Cu ferrite spinel. The microstructure, magnetism and adsorption ability were characterized. The results show that the organic molecular chain of glycollic acid in precursor is combined with inorganic phase to form the skeleton and the doublely-connected pore structure, the porosity of as–synthesized composite aerogels is 73.22%, and the bulk density is 0.36 g/cm3, with an average grading of 16 μm; the magnetic nanoparticles distribute uniformly in the SiO2 matrix. The specific surface area of samples decreases and the saturation magnetization increases with the increase of the calcination temperature. The composite as-prepared presents a maximum capacity of 100.67 mg/g, can adsorb Ce(IV) from aqueous solution at a superior performance of recycle ability , and can be separated by a magnetic field.
High-Performance Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts Discovered via High-Throughput Aerogel Synthesis

Abstract:A combinatorial high-throughput aerogel synthesis method is developed to systematically study the synergistic catalytic effects of multiple non-noble metal elements. A large number of aerogels with different compositions were synthesized and the corresponding ternary phase diagrams of the composition–electrocatalytic performance were constructed. A batch of aerogel catalysts with outstanding catalytic performance and stability for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were discovered. Amorphous Fe3Co3Ni2-(oxy)hydroxide with excellent electrocatalytic performance (Tafel slope of 49 mV dec–1 and η100 of 421.48 ± 6.41 mV) was found to achieve a mass activity of 611.23 A/gmetal at 1.63 V (vs RHE). X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies reveal that the incorporation of a third atom (Ni and Ce) into the binary aerogels enlarges the Co–O atomic distance and reduces the average valence state of Co, which in turn speed up the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. This work puts forward a strategy for high-throughput synthesis and screening of electrocatalysts and provides valuable data sets for future machine learning and prediction of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The inert gas condensation (IGC) technique has emerged as one of the most flexible physical vapour techniques. It provides the possibility to control the growth process of nanoparticles (NPs) with a well-controlled size and chemical composition. Such characteristics are highly desirable in the synthesis of multifunctional NPs. Here we show the application of the IGC technique to the production of active bimetallic magnetic-plasmonic FeCu NPs with narrow size distribution, in which characteristic collective properties depend on the different capabilities endorsed by the constituent elements of NPs. The present work reveals a tendency of NPs to agglomerate in the form of short chains and a significant oxidation of the Fe phase. Nevertheless, the magnetic response of Fe-rich NPs is clearly observed at cryogenic temperatures. The amplified surface-enhanced Raman scattering and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy of Phe adsorbed onto FeCu NPs prove the plasmonic behaviour of the studied NPs. It is possible to detect Phe at a concentration of 0.1 mM for all samples, regardless of the Cu concentration. Protection against oxidation by the Au thin film leads to an improved magnetic response, which indicates that bimetallic FeCu NPs produced by IGC can be considered as a promising magnetic-plasmonic system for the development of biosensors.

Abstract:Magnetic nanocomposite materials consisting of 5 and 10 wt% CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in a silica aerogel matrix have been synthesized by the sol-gel method. For the CoFe2O4-10wt% sample, bright-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (BF STEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) images showed distinct, rounded CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, with typical diameters of roughly 8 nm. For the CoFe2O4-5wt% sample, BF STEM images and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements showed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with diameters of roughly 3 +/- 1 nm. EDX measurements indicate that all nanoparticles consist of stoichiometric CoFe2O4, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy measurements from lines crossing nanoparticles in the CoFe2O4-10wt% sample show a uniform composition within nanoparticles, with a precision of at best than +/-0.5 nm in analysis position. BF STEM images obtained for the CoFe2O4-10wt% sample showed many "needle-like" nanostructures that typically have a length of 10 nm and a width of 1 nm, and frequently appear to be attached to nanoparticles. These needle-like nanostructures are observed to contain layers with interlayer spacing 0.33 +/- 0.1 nm, which could be consistent with Co silicate hydroxide, a known precursor phase in these nanocomposite materials.
