Abstract:We present the results of a search for the top quark in 19.3 pb−1 of p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The data were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The search includes standard model tt¯ decays to final states eeνν¯, eμνν¯, and μμνν¯ as well as e+ν+jets or μ+ν+jets. In the (e,μ)+ν+jets channel we search for b quarks from t decays via secondary vertex identification and via semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. In the dilepton final states we find two events with a background of 0.56+0.25−0.13 events. In the e,μ+ν+jets channel with a b identified via a secondary vertex, we find six events with a background of 2.3±0.3. With a b identified via a semileptonic decay, we find seven events with a background of 3.1±0.3. The secondary vertex and semileptonic-decay samples have three events in common. The probability that the observed yield is consistent with the background is estimated to be 0.26%. The statistics are too limited to firmly establish the existence of the top quark; however, a natural interpretation of the excess is that it is due to tt¯ production. We present several cross-checks. Some support this hypothesis; others do not. Under the assumption that the excess yield over background is due to tt¯, constrained fitting on a subset of the events yields a mass of 174±10+13−12 GeV/c2 for the top quark. The Top-Pair Forward-Backward Asymmetry Beyond NLO

Abstract:We make use of recent results in effective theory and higher-order perturbative calculations to im- prove the theoretical predictions of the QCD contribution to the top-quark pair production forward- backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. In particular, we supplement the fixed-order NLO calculation with higher-order corrections from soft gluon resummation at NNLL accuracy performed in two dif- ferent kinematic schemes, which allows us to make improved predictions for the asymmetry in the pp and tt rest frames as a function of the rapidity and invariant mass of the tt pair. Furthermore, we provide binned results which can be compared with the recent measurements of the forward- backward asymmetry in events with a large pair invariant mass or rapidity difference. Finally, we calculate at NLO+NNLL order the top-quark charge asymmetry at the LHC as a function of a lower rapidity cut-off for the top and antitop quarks.

Abstract:We discuss the impact of heavy-flavor production measurements in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at HERA on the CTEQ-TEA PDFs. In particular, we study the impact of the latest charm and bottom production measurements from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the gluon, and the interplay of these measurements with the data ensemble of the recent CT18 global QCD analysis.

Abstract:We have searched for evidence of top quark production in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 1.8 TeV using the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. For an integrated luminosity of 15 pb-1, we report results of a search for ttBAR pairs in the decay modes ttBAR --> emu + jets, ee + jets, e + jets, and mu + jets. From analyses of these modes we obtain a lower limit on the top quark mass of 131 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level, assuming standard model branching fractions and a predicted cross section for ttBAR production. We discuss the properties of an event for which expected backgrounds are small.
Students' Understanding of Direct Current Resistive Electrical Circuits

Abstract:Research has shown that both high school and university students' reasoning patterns regarding direct current resistive electric circuits often differ from the currently accepted explanations. At present, there are no standard diagnostic examinations in electric circuits. Two versions of a diagnostic instrument called Determining and Interpreting Resistive Electric circuits Concepts Tests (DIRECT) were developed, each consisting of 29 questions. The information provided by the exam provides classroom instructors a means with which to evaluate the progress and conceptual difficulties of their students and their instructional methods. It can be used to evaluate curricular packages and/or other supplemental materials for their effectiveness in overcoming students' conceptual difficulties. The analyses indicate that students, especially females, tend to hold multiple misconceptions, even after instruction. During interviews, the idea that the battery is a constant source of current was used most often in answering the questions. Students tended to focus on current in solving the problems and to confuse terms, often assigning the properties of current to voltage and/or resistance. Results indicated that students do not have a clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms of electric circuit phenomena. On the other hand, students were able to translate easily from a "realistic" representation of a circuit to the corresponding schematic diagram.

Abstract:I present the latest results on the theoretical cross section for top-antitop pair production as well as for single top production at the Tevatron and the LHC. The calculations include higher-order soft-gluon corrections which are dominant near threshold. The top quark transverse momentum distribution is also presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study of top quark phenomenology within the Non-Commutative Standard Model. We calculate non-commutative corrections to the squared amplitudes for top quark pair production, as well as for single top quark production via the $t$-channel and $tW$-channel, while noting that the $s$-channel remains unaffected by non-commutative geometry. Utilizing MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, we determine total cross-sections at various center-of-mass energies and examine differential distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity at leading order in both the strong coupling $\alpha_S$ and the non-commutative parameter $\Theta$. For single top production in the $t$-channel, a matching technique is employed to extend the validity of the distribution to low $p_t^{top}$ values through resummation. We also compare the non-commutative corrections with higher-order QCD corrections obtained at NLO using MCFM and at NNLO from existing literature. Our findings reveal significant deviations arising from non-commutative geometry at high energies, providing insights into potential new physics at energy scales accessible by current and future colliders.

Abstract:We consider top-antitop quark (tt ̄) production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with subsequent decays into dileptonic final states. We use and investigate a set of leptonic angular correlations and distributions with which all the independent coefficient functions of the top-spin-dependent parts of the tt ̄ production spin density matrices can be experimentally probed. We compute these observables for the LHC center-of-mass energy 13.6 TeV within the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling including the mixed QCD weak corrections. We determine also the tt ̄ charge asymmetry where we take in addition also the mixed QCD-QED corrections into account. In addition we analyze and compute possible new physics (NP) effects on these observables within effective field theory in terms of a gauge-invariant effective Lagrangian that contains the operators up to mass dimension six that are relevant for hadronic tt ̄ production. First, we compute our observables inclusive in phase space. Then, in order to investigate which region in phase space has, for a specific observable, a high NP sensitivity, we determine our observables also in two-dimensional (Mtt ̄,cosθt*) bins, where Mtt ̄ denotes the tt ̄ -invariant mass and θt* is the top quark scattering angle in the tt ̄ zero-momentum frame. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.116016 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:We present a measurement of the total decay width of the top quark using events with top-antitop-quark pair candidates reconstructed in the final state with one charged lepton and four or more hadronic jets. We use the full Tevatron Run II data set of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF II detector. The top-quark mass and the mass of the hadronically-decaying $W$ boson are reconstructed for each event and compared with distributions derived from simulated signal and background samples to extract the top-quark width (\gmt) and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with {\it in-situ} calibration. For a top-quark mass $\mtop = \gevcc{172.5}$, we find $1.10<\gmt<\gev{4.05}$ at 68% confidence level, which is in agreement with the standard-model expectation of \gev{1.3} and is the most precise direct measurement of the top-quark width to date.

Abstract:The O(alpha m_t^2/m_W^2) corrections to top quark pair production by gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC are calculated in two-Higgs-doublet models. We find that the correction to the cross-section can exceed about -10% for certain parameter values.

Abstract:We report on recent calculations of the differential cross section for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. The results are differential with respect to the top-pair invariant mass and to the partonic scattering angle. In these calculations, which were carried out by employing soft-collinear effective theory techniques, we resummed threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. Starting from the differential cross section, it is possible to obtain theoretical predictions for the invariant-mass distribution and the total cross section. We summarize here our results for these observables, and we compare them with the results obtained from different calculational methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the centrality and energy dependence of $K^{*0}$ resonance production using ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) and thermal models. The $K^{*0}/K$ ratios obtained from the UrQMD and thermal models are compared with measurements done by the STAR experiment in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV. The $K^{*0}/K$ ratio from the thermal model is consistent with data in most-peripheral collisions, however it overpredicts the ratio in central Au+Au collisions. This could be due to the fact that the thermal model does not have a hadronic rescattering phase, which is expected to be dominant in more central collisions. Furthermore, we have studied the $K^{*0}/K$ ratio from UrQMD by varying the hadron propagation time ($\tau$) within the range 5 to 50 fm/c. It was found that the $K^{*0}/K$ ratio decreases with increasing $\tau$. Comparison between data and UrQMD suggest, one needs to consider a $\tau$ $\approx$ 10-50 fm/c to explain data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7-39 GeV in Au+Au collisions. We also predict the rapidity distribution of $K^{*0}$ from UrQMD which could be measured in the STAR beam energy scan phase II (BES-II) program.

Abstract:Jun Gao 2, ∗ and Hua Xing Zhu † Department of Physics, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX 75275-0175, USA High Energy Physics Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL 60439, USA SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94309, USA We report on a complete calculation of electroweak production of top quark pairs in ee annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order in Quantum Chromodynamics. Our setup is fully differential and can be used to calculate any infrared-safe observable. Especially we calculated the next-to-nextto-leading order corrections to top-quark forward-backward asymmetry and found sizable effects. Our results show a large reduction of the theoretical uncertainties in predictions of the forwardbackward asymmetry, and allow a precision determination of the top quark electroweak couplings at future ee colliders.

Abstract:The impact of the finite top-quark mass on the inclusive Higgs production cross section at higher perturbative orders has been an open question for almost three decades. In this paper, we report on the computation of this effect at NNLO QCD. For the purely gluonic channel, it amounts to $+0.62\%$ relative to the result obtained in the HEFT approximation. The formally sub-leading partonic channels over-compensate this shift, leading to an overall effect of $-0.32\%$ at a $pp$ collider energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$, and $-0.16\%$ at $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. This result eliminates one of the main theoretical uncertainties to inclusive Higgs production cross section at the LHC.
