Abstract:We discuss the impact of heavy-flavor production measurements in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at HERA on the CTEQ-TEA PDFs. In particular, we study the impact of the latest charm and bottom production measurements from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the gluon, and the interplay of these measurements with the data ensemble of the recent CT18 global QCD analysis.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper explores the impact of heavy quark (especially charm quark and bottom quark) production measurements in the CT18 global QCD analysis. Specifically, the author studies the influence of the latest charm quark and bottom quark production measurement data provided by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the gluon distribution function (gluon PDF), as well as the interaction between these measurement data and other data sets in the CT18 global QCD analysis. ### Research Background - **Heavy - flavor Production**: In deep inelastic scattering (DIS) reactions, the production of heavy flavors (such as charm quarks and bottom quarks) is of great significance for probing factorization in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD). These processes involve multiple hard scales, such as the heavy quark mass and the transverse momentum of the outgoing quark. - **Factorization Theorem**: To study the production of heavy flavors in DIS, several modified versions of the factorization theorem have been developed and widely studied in the literature. - **CT18 Global QCD Analysis**: The CT18 global QCD analysis includes the charm quark and bottom quark structure functions \( F_{cc}^2 \) and \( F_{bb}^2 \) of neutral - current (NC) DIS measurements in high - energy proton - proton collisions, as well as the charm quark production cross - section measurements on HERA. These data are very important for determining parton distribution functions (PDFs), because they directly constrain the gluon PDF and may indirectly constrain the strange quark PDF. ### Main Problems - **Description of New Data**: When the new charm quark and bottom quark production measurement data of the H1 and ZEUS collaborations replace the old data, these data cannot be well described by models with \( \chi^2/N_{\text{pt}}< 1.7 \). Specifically, the \( \chi^2/N_{\text{pt}} \) obtained from the CT18NNLO fit is 1.98 (charm quark production, \( N_{\text{pt}} = 47 \)), 1.25 (bottom quark production, \( N_{\text{pt}} = 26 \)). The \( \chi^2/N_{\text{pt}} \) obtained from the CT18XNNLO fit is 1.71 (charm quark production) and 1.26 (bottom quark production). - **Contradiction with Other Data**: These new data are in tension with other data sets in CT18 (such as LHCb 7 and 8 TeV W/Z production data, CDF Run - II Z rapidity data, CMS 8 TeV single - jet production data, and the double - differential cross - section data of top quark pairs), so these data are not included in the CT18 global analysis. ### Research Methods - **Parameter Adjustment**: The author attempts to improve the description of these data by adjusting various parameters, including increasing the weight of HERA data, changing the definition of charm quark mass (MS and pole mass), adjusting the initial scale \( Q_0 \), changing gluon parameterization, etc. - **Systematic Uncertainty**: Relevant systematic uncertainties play a very important role in describing these data. The H1 and ZEUS collaborations have released 167 sources of relevant systematic uncertainties, including 71 experimental system sources, 16 sources related to extrapolation procedures (such as fragmentation fractions and branching ratios), and 80 statistical correlations between charm quarks and bottom quarks. ### Conclusions - **Preliminary Results**: Although a large number of fitting attempts have been made, the \( \chi^2/N_{\text{pt}} \) in the best configuration is still not lower than 1.5. These data seem to prefer harder gluons in the intermediate and small \( x \) regions. - **Future Work**: The author plans to further analyze the impact of these important measurement data in the CTEQ global analysis in future research. In summary, this paper aims to explore the impact of the new charm quark and bottom quark production measurement data of the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the CT18 global QCD analysis and attempts to improve the description of these data by adjusting various parameters.
