Abstract:Topics associated with the chemical sciences form a significant part of the curriculum in science at the primary school level in the U.K. In this methodology paper, we demonstrate how a wide range of research articles associated with the chemical sciences can be disseminated to an elementary school audience and how children can carry out investigations associated with cutting-edge research in the classroom. We discuss how the Primary Science Teaching Trust's (PSTT's) "I bet you did not know" (IBYDK) articles and their accompanying Teacher Guides benefit children, primary (elementary) school teachers, and other stakeholders including the researchers themselves. We define three types of research articles; ones describing how children can reproduce the research themselves without much adaptation, others where children can mirror the research using similar methods, and some where an analogy can be used to explain the research. We provide exemplars of each type and some preliminary feedback on articles written.

Abstract:Citizen science represents an important opportunity for school students to make real-world connections with science through context-based learning with the potential to increase their engagement, enjoyment and understanding of science. However, to date, citizen science has not experienced wide uptake in school settings and there is a paucity of information about its implementation in the classroom. Here we present a mixed-method approach investigating teachers' knowledge and use of citizen science in Australian classrooms. We explored teachers' experience and perceptions of citizen science, and opportunities and barriers to incorporate citizen science as an educational approach through an online questionnaire. Among the teachers surveyed, 45% (n = 295) had personally participated in citizen science outside of school and 41% (n = 283) had incorporated citizen science projects in classroom lessons. Teachers (45%, n = 295) reported participating in citizen science initiatives multiple times. Also, most projects that teachers were involved in (77%, n = 292) were related to ecological studies, such as species monitoring. Citizen science was reported to be a relatively new approach; used by teachers for less than a year on average. The main challenges included a lack of knowledge, time, confidence, and clarity regarding citizen science project alignment with the Australian curriculum. Additionally, 92% of respondents said they would be more encouraged to use citizen science in classrooms if projects were aligned to the curriculum. Identifying ways to increase teachers' openness to incorporate citizen science in their classrooms is crucial to its successful widespread, long-term, and meaningful implementation. Encouraging broader participation of teachers in citizen science based on their previous experiences could address their expectations and increase their confidence and feeling of ownership. These research findings suggest that meaningful and applicable citizen science programs could be co-created by addressing resource limitations and curriculum alignment challenges. Implementing solutions to these barriers is likely to contribute to the development of sustainable school-inclusive citizen science projects, with potential to positively impact science education in the long-term.

Abstract:Chemical innovations enhance our quality of life by responding to challenges in e.g., energy production, medical care, and material development. Studying and understanding chemistry is essential for future solutions. However, chemistry is not accessible to all learners. In South Africa, the challenge is to make chemistry accessible to all participants, especially in the North West province, in poor schools without easy access to resources and with inadequately trained teachers. One way to make chemistry more accessible is through micro-scale chemistry. With this goal in mind, the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was designed. The kit was developed around the 5 ml test tube (our size determinant). We wanted all learners and teachers to have hands-on, minds-on chemistry practical experience. Thus, workshops were organised to (i) train the teachers in the use of the kits and (ii) to allow learners to experience practicals hands-on. This article gives an overview of how the use of the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was successful in making chemistry accessible to all.

Abstract:Citizen science is an expanding field in public education and learning and can bridge the gap between science and society. This benefits not only just citizen learning and scientific research, but also earlier learning in formal science education. Citizen science can foster an understanding of engagement with science as well as the perception of the relevance of scientific topics. Based on a review of several citizen science projects in school contexts, potential learning outcomes are identified, showing that citizen science can enhance aspects including pupils' motivation, interest and knowledge as well as their scientific and communication skills. Project designs with a high level of pupil involvement are found to be particularly promising in terms of achieving learning objectives. However, curricular standards require the thorough preparation of citizen science projects to enable the development of their full potential for all participants.

Abstract:Based on theoretical frameworks of scientist stereotypes, possible selves, and science identity, written assignments were developed to teach science content through biographies and research of counter-stereotypical scientists-Scientist Spotlights (www.scientistspotlights.org). Previous studies on Scientist Spotlight assignments showed significant shifts in how college-level biology students relate to and describe scientists and in their performance in biology courses. However, the outcomes of Scientist Spotlight assignments in secondary schools were yet to be explored. In collaboration with 18 science teachers from 12 schools, this study assessed the impacts of Scientist Spotlight assignments for secondary school students. We used published assessment tools: Relatability prompt; Stereotypes prompt; and Performance/Competence, Interest, and Recognition (PCIR) instrument. Statistical analyses compared students' responses before and after receiving at least three Scientist Spotlight assignments. We observed significant shifts in students' relatability to and descriptions of scientists as well as other science identity measures. Importantly, disaggregating classes by implementation strategies revealed that students' relatability shifts were significant for teachers reporting in-class discussions and not significant for teachers reporting no discussions. Our findings raise questions about contextual and pedagogical influences shaping student outcomes with Scientist Spotlight assignments, like how noncontent Instructor Talk might foster student shifts in aspects of science identity.

Abstract:There is a growing need for workers with STEM-aligned training in the modern global economy, but a paucity of workers to fill these positions. One important contributor to this issue is low student persistence in STEM. Nontraditional science courses that utilize more active-participation and learning are attractive as tools to increase student persistence and engender more interest in STEM. Herein is described the content and implementation of the undergraduate chemistry-based service-learning course, <i>Chemistry 1898: Service Learning</i>, that was offered in Spring 2019 at Tulane University. The goal of the course was to increase self-efficacy in chemistry and sustain undergraduate interest in STEM. The course also serves to increase STEM interest in the New Orleans public-school students. Chemistry 1898 features a well-rounded curriculum and diverse activities. The enrolled undergraduate students were not only taught chemistry concepts (general chemistry and supramolecular chemistry) but also asked to present the chemical concepts using attention-grabbing demonstrations to public-school students in the New Orleans area. In addition, the course covered multiple nonscience topics, including the pedagogy of service-learning, background on the New Orleans public-school system, and a guide for how to work with the community. The course also involved student reflection activities/surveys and interfaced with the Tulane Center for Public Service. Preliminary qualitative results from a set of anonymous pre- and poststudent surveys indicated that the undergraduate students gained self-efficacy in the general chemistry concepts covered in the course. Although the course did not have an effect on the career choices of the undergraduate students, the majority of the students were already very interested in a STEM career. Abstract:There is a scarcity of studies that focus on how South African high school physical sciences teachers are grappling with chemical laboratory safety (CLS). This is despite the fact that the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements in the South African school system increased emphasis on laboratory activities in the physical sciences. Department of Basic Education authorities have increased the supply of resources, including chemicals, in schools to ensure the successful implementation of the practical component. This quantitative study investigates physical sciences teachers' levels of CLS awareness through a conceptual framework developed by the United States National Research Council aimed at promoting chemical laboratory safety in developing countries. A laboratory safety survey questionnaire for teachers was administered to 72 physical sciences teachers from 72 schools in one province. The questionnaire consisted of 14 statements with a four-point Likert scale. Teacher CLS awareness was found to be generally suboptimal, especially concerning awareness of safe chemical storage and waste disposal, and emergency laboratory safety procedures. Results from the computed Pearson chi-squared tests for statistical significance suggest that teachers from better-resourced schools and those who had majored in chemistry had greater awareness than those from less well-resourced schools and those who had not majored in chemistry. Authorities could consider safety awareness training to accompany the provision of resources to schools and target those teachers who may not have majored in chemistry. Such training could include, but not be limited to, online laboratory awareness courses that exploit the use of multiple virtual tools.

Abstract:In this paper we seek to contribute to the debate about the nature of citizen involvement in real scientific projects by the means of online tools that facilitate crowdsourcing and collaboration. We focus on an understudied area, the impact of online citizen science participation on the science education of school age children. We present a binary tree of online citizen science process flows and the results of an anonymous survey among primary school teachers in New Zealand that are known advocates of science education. Our findings reveal why teachers are interested in using online citizen science in classroom activities and what they are looking for when making their choice for a particular project to use. From these characteristics we derive recommendations for the optimal embedding of online citizen science in education related to the process, the context, and the dissemination of results.

Abstract:Abstract The Context-Based Science Education (CBSE) approach promotes the inclusion of scientific concepts in everyday situations. In this work, we present a non-traditional context-based teaching experience on the subject of chemical senses that seeks, through a unique didactic instrument, to generate cognitive conflicts in order to promote conceptual change from “common sense” to science-based ideas. This experience encourages the active role of the students and involves simple experiences with everyday materials. It was carried out with 95 students from 12 to 15 years old. The contents developed during the experience were focused on taste and smell and the concepts of perception and sensation . The activities were designed to promote students’ self-awareness on their previous knowledge in order to achieve a sustainable learning by constructing appropriate scientific concepts. Assessment of students’ motivation for learning and their conceptual change – from common sense ideas to science based ideas – was done through an initial survey and a post-test. Students’ perception on their commitment and enjoyment about the approach has been evaluated through a metacognitive poll. The results show that the activities were highly motivating and that students were aware of their improvement in knowledge and their own commitment to the task throughout the entire experience.

Abstract:Proficiency in physical chemistry requires a broad skill set. Successful trainees often receive mentoring from senior colleagues (research advisors, postdocs, etc.). Mentoring introduces trainees to experimental design, instrumental setup, and complex data interpretation. In lab settings, trainees typically learn by customizing experimental setups, and developing new ways of analyzing data. Learning alongside experts strengthens these fundamentals, and places a focus on the clear communication of research problems. However, this level of input is not scalable, nor can it easily be shared with all researchers or students, particularly those that face socioeconomic barriers to accessing mentoring. New approaches to training will therefore progress the field of physical chemistry. Technology is disrupting and democratising scientific education and research. The emergence of free online courses and video resources enables students to learn in a style that suits them. Higher degrees of automation remove cumbersome and sometimes arbitrary technical barriers to learning new techniques, allowing one to collect high quality data quickly. Open sourcing of data and analysis tools has increased transparency, lowered barriers to access, and accelerated scientific dissemination. However, these advances also can lead to "black box" approaches to acquiring and analyzing data, where convenience replaces understanding and errors and misrepresentations become more common. The risk is a breakdown in education: if one does not understand the fundamentals of a technique or analysis, it is difficult to correctly discern the practical limits of an experiment, distinguish signal from noise, troubleshoot problems, or take full advantage of powerful analytical procedures. Our vision of the future of physical chemistry is built around democratized learning, where deep technical and analytical expertise from physical chemists is made freely available. Advancements in technical education through expert-generated educational resources and AI-based tools will enrich physical chemistry education. A holistic approach to education will prepare the physical chemists of 2050 to adapt to rapidly advancing technological tools, which accelerate the pace of research. Technical education will be enhanced by accessible open-source instrumentation and analysis procedures, which will provide instruments and analysis scripts specifically designed for education. High quality, comparable data from standardized open-source instruments will feed into accessible databases and analysis projects, providing others the opportunity to store and analyze both failed and successful experiments. The coupling of open-source education, hardware, and analysis will democratize physical chemistry while addressing risks associated with "black box" approaches.

Abstract:Highlighting scientists from historically excluded groups in educational materials increases student engagement in STEM. However, which specific elements of these educational materials maximize their impact remains untested, leaving educators guessing how to best highlight counter-stereotypical scientists in their classrooms. We tested the effects of including visual and humanizing descriptions of scientists featured in quantitative biology activities on over 3,700 students across 36 undergraduate institutions. We found that including humanizing information about counter-stereotypical scientists increased the extent to which students related to those scientists, which in turn translated to higher student engagement. Students who shared one or more excluded identity(s) with the featured scientists related most strongly. Our findings demonstrate the importance of humanizing counter-stereotypical scientists in classrooms, beyond simply adding a photo to increase representation.

Abstract:Science education research has shown that solving case studies helps students to develop higher-order analytical skills while discovering the usefulness of conceptual knowledge in solving real-world problems. In order to support team-based learning and promote student curiosity, two case studies highlighting relevant topics in the media were developed for use in a flipped undergraduate general chemistry sequence. The first is a case involving the determination of the molecular formula of a pharmaceutical. Students work in teams and use their knowledge of stoichiometry to determine the identity of the compound. The second, an interrupted case spanning two courses, is pulled from media reports about arsenic in apple juice. Student teams use their knowledge of periodic properties, electron configurations, and molecular geometry to investigate elemental arsenic and As-containing compounds and also research arsenic's toxicological effects. Both cases are described in this paper along with details regarding how they are implemented and assessed. Student opinions on the use of case studies are also presented.

Abstract:Major European Union-funded research infrastructure and open science projects have traditionally included dissemination work, for mostly one-way communication of the research activities. Here, we present and review our radical re-envisioning of this work, by directly engaging citizen science volunteers into the research. We summarise the citizen science in the Horizon-funded projects ASTERICS (Astronomy ESFRI and Research Infrastructure Clusters) and ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy and Particle Physics ESFRI Research Infrastructures), engaging hundreds of thousands of volunteers in providing millions of data mining classifications. Not only does this have enormously more scientific and societal impact than conventional dissemination, but it facilitates the direct research involvement of what is often arguably the most neglected stakeholder group in Horizon projects, the science-inclined public. We conclude with recommendations and opportunities for deploying crowdsourced data mining in the physical sciences, noting that the primary goal is always the fundamental research question; if public engagement is the primary goal to optimise, then other, more targeted approaches may be more effective.

Abstract:Incorporating real-life context through connections to research early in the curriculum can create meaningful learning opportunities that encourage students to engage deeply with classroom content to construct chemistry knowledge. Course-based undergraduate research experiences have been successful at integrating real-life context, but are often only incorporated into upper-level courses. To provide an additional pathway to foster interaction with research, four activities from an introductory chemistry discussion class were created to incorporate authentic research connections. Care was taken to incorporate metacognitive questions designed to help students make connections between their preexisting knowledge and course content. Marzano's taxonomy was used to analyze the cognitive complexity of tasks, which increased in the revised activities, allowing for more opportunities for knowledge construction. Audio and written work of student groups as they worked through activities was collected. Qualitative analysis of student engagement revealed that control over the content of activities to incorporate opportunities for knowledge construction is not enough to facilitate students consciously engaging in meaningful learning. If instructors wish to promote students integrating chemistry knowledge into their existing framework, course instructors, including graduate teaching assistants, need to be trained on how to properly facilitate classroom experiences to increase the likelihood of success.

Abstract:Chemists use atoms as the building blocks in reactions to design new molecules for materials, medicines, and much more. However, the chemical elements on our planet are a finite resource, so we need to prevent them from running out or being wasted. How do chemists do this? The principles of Green Chemistry guide chemists, helping them to design new products both efficiently and safely, while limiting or preventing pollution along the way. Scientists consider them through every step of creating a new product—from early experiments in the laboratory, all the way up to large-scale industrial production. Chemists can compare the materials and processes used to create their products using a Life Cycle Assessment, which can calculate factors such as water, energy, and resource inputs as well as production of pollutants like carbon dioxide. All of this means we can do exciting and important science while protecting our planet, too!
Design and Validation of a Virtual Chemical Laboratory—An Example of Natural Science in Elementary Education

Abstract:In the natural science curriculum, chemistry is a very important domain. However, when conducting chemistry experiments, safety issues need to be taken seriously, and excessive material waste may be caused during the experiment. Based on the 11-year-old student science curriculum, this paper proposed a virtual chemistry laboratory, which was designed by combining a virtual experiment application with physical teaching materials. The virtual experiment application was a virtual experiment laboratory environment created by using selected experimental equipment cards in combination with augmented reality (AR) technology. The physical teaching materials included all virtual equipment required for experiment units. Each piece of equipment had corresponding cards for learners to choose from and utilize in specific experimental operations. It was hoped that students were able to achieve the desired learning effectiveness of experimental teaching while reducing the waste of experimental materials through the virtual experimental environment. This study employed the quasi-experimental and questionnaire survey methods to evaluate both learning effectiveness and learning motivation. Eighty-one students and eight elementary school teachers were surveyed as research subjects. The experimental results revealed that significant differences in learning effectiveness existed between the experimental group and control group, indicating that the application of AR technology to teaching substantively helped enhance students’ learning effectiveness and motivation. In addition, the results of the teacher questionnaire demonstrated that the virtual chemistry laboratory proposed in this study could effectively assist with classroom teaching.
