Abstract:A polymer acceptor, named PX-1, is designed and synthesized using a polymerization strategy with grafted small molecule acceptors. This design approach allows for the freedom of end groups while maintaining efficient terminal packing, enhancing & pi;-& pi; interactions, and facilitating charge transport. All-polymer organic solar cells based on PM6: PX-1 demonstrate a promising efficiency of 13.55%. The result presents an alternative pathway for the design of high-efficiency polymer acceptors through the careful regulation of small molecule acceptor monomers and linker units. Abstract:Three new non-fullerene acceptors with the core of a fused nonacyclic unit, and the end-capping groups of 3-dicycanovinylindan-1-one are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Those acceptor molecules bear four additional aliphatic side chains at the nonacyclic core, which endow them excellent solubility and crystallization-morphology tunability. Meanwhile, the effect of side chains’ size on the optical absorptions, electrochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance are carefully investigated. The results show that the bulk of side chains just slightly affects optical absorption and electronic energy levels, however, it significantly influences the molecular stacking and morphology separation, as well as the eventual device performance. When they are matched with the donor polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T), the device based on the acceptor with octyl group can deliver the best PCE of 8.57%, which overwhelms those based on other two acceptor materials. This can be attributed to the preferable nanophase separation for their blend films, and high and balanced charge mobility. The results highlight the important role of backbone and side-chain tailoring in designing non-fullerene acceptors towards high-performance polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Narrow‐bandgap polymer semiconductors are essential for advancing the development of organic solar cells. Here, a new narrow‐bandgap polymer acceptor L14, featuring an acceptor–acceptor (A–A) type backbone, is synthesized by copolymerizing a dibrominated fused‐ring electron acceptor (FREA) with distannylated bithiophene imide. Combining the advantages of both the FREA and the A–A polymer, L14 not only shows a narrow bandgap and high absorption coefficient, but also low‐lying frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels. Such FMO levels yield improved electron transfer character, but unexpectedly, without sacrificing open‐circuit voltage (Voc), which is attributed to a small nonradiative recombination loss (Eloss,nr) of 0.22 eV. Benefiting from the improved photocurrent along with the high fill factor and Voc, an excellent efficiency of 14.3% is achieved, which is among the highest values for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). The results demonstrate the superiority of narrow‐bandgap A–A type polymers for improving all‐PSC performance and pave a way toward developing high‐performance polymer acceptors for all‐PSCs.

Abstract:The development of polymer acceptors is of crucial importance for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). However, the state-of-the-art polymer acceptors are typically based on Y-series small molecule acceptors. Their synthetic complexity and high synthesis cost remain a severe challenge for future practical application of organic photovoltaics. Herein, a novel non-fused polymer acceptor named PDO is synthesized. The all-PSC achieves a best power conversion efficiency of 9.68% in the layer-by-layer (LBL) processed device, which is much better than that (8.14%) of the conventional bulk-heterojunction device. Comprehensive analysis on the electrical and morphological characterizations reveal that the improved device performance in the LBL-processed device is originated from efficient exciton extraction and charge transport, suppresses charge recombination, improves molecular ordering, and optimizes active layer morphology. These results validate that the fabrication of all-PSCs with non-fused polymerized small molecule acceptors is a promising strategy to develop low-cost and high-performance all-PSCs.
Unaxisymmetric Non-Fused Electron Acceptors for Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:To develop photovoltaics embracing the both features of high performance and low cost has drawn attentions of researchers, yet representing the significant challenges. In this work, two non-fused ring acceptors(NFRAs), namely p-PTIC4Cl and t-PTIC4Cl, were developed via a short synthetic route. By tethering unaxisymmetric aromatic chains to thienyl bridge of NFRAs, we revealed that the tuning of aromatic chains allows modulating the self-assembly and stacking of NFRAs in solid, hence influencing their optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties. As results, p-PTIC4Cl, consisting of 3-hexylbenzene with large axial angle to backbone, can achieve superior PCE of 11.30% than that of t-PTIC4Cl with 2-hexylthiophene chains(PCE of 6.49%), when pairing with polymer donor PBDB-TF. Despite of the only subtle structural difference, the pPTIC4Cl based blend films possess better exciton dissociation and charge transfer rates, as well as photostability, to those of t-PTIC4Cl based blends.

Abstract:Polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs) have made significant progress as the application in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Most PSMAs are constructed by near-infrared fused-ring electron acceptors via Stille polymerization, such as Y-series acceptors. However, very limited non-fused electron acceptors with simplified synthetic complexity have been used in PSMAs. In this work, two non-fused PSMAs with a benzothiadiazole (BT) core are developed for application in all-PSCs. The S-O non-covalent interaction and the regioregularity have been introduced to improve the crystallinity and charge transport properties. As a result, a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.42% with an enhanced photocurrent has been obtained in these regioregular PBTO-γ-based solar cells, representing the highest PCEs based on non-fused PSMAs. The encouraging results will intrigue more design of non-fused PSMAs toward high-performance all-PSCs.

Abstract:We report two novel small-molecule non-fullerene acceptors, IF-TN and IDT-TN, with indenofluorene (IF) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) as their respective central electron-rich cores and naphthyl-fused indanone (N) as the electron-withdrawing end-groups. By pairing these non-fullerene acceptors with a widely used polymer PBDB-T, the fabricated polymer solar cells based on PBDB-T: IDT-TN obtain a power conversion efficiency up to 5.89%, associated with a relatively high open-circuit voltage of 0.97 V and a remarkably low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss of 0.23 V. These findings provide an effective approach for the rational molecular design of small-molecule acceptors with low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss.

Abstract:While great progress has been achieved in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), the efficiency of all-PSCs is primarily limited by polymer acceptors that lack a high extinction coefficient, high electron mobility, and good compatibility with polymer donors. Here we designed and developed a polymer acceptor PFA1 based on a non-fullerene acceptor framework with a fluorine substituent on the 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone unit. In combination with an electron-donating polymer, PTzBI-oF, the blend film presents an extended and intensified absorption profile, enhanced electron mobility, and favorable film morphology. The optimized all-PSCs exhibit a remarkably high efficiency of 15.11%, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest performance yet reported for an all-PSC. Of particular importance is the applicability of PFA1 as a universal polymer acceptor with a range of polymer donors to achieve impressively high efficiencies. Abstract:We report two new poly-small-molecule acceptors, PYN-BDT and PYN-BDTF, which serve, by virtue of their π-extended naphthalene rings, as broad optical cross-section macromolecular absorbers (extending to ∼900 nm; ΔEopticalgap = 1.38 eV) in all-polymer solar cells (APSCs). APSCs fabricated by blending PYN-BDT or PYN-BDTF with PM6 exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 7.24 and 9.08%, respectively, while blends with PBDB-T exhibits far higher PCEs of 12.06 and 13.22%, respectively; the latter cell achieves Jsc = 22.28 mA cm–2, among the highest known for an APSC. The results of blend morphology, GIWAXS, charge transport, exciton and carrier dynamics, PL quenching efficiency, and impedance-based analysis indicate that the PBDB-TT:PYN-BDTF blends and their APSCs outperform the corresponding PM6:PYN-BDTF devices due to significantly suppressed bimolecular recombination. Abstract:In this paper, a difluoro‐monobromo end group is designed and synthesized, which is then used to construct a novel polymer acceptor (named PY2F‐T) yielding high‐performance all‐polymer solar cells with 15.22% efficiency. The fluorination strategy can increase the intramolecular charge transfer and interchain packing of the previous PY‐T based acceptor, and significantly improve photon harvesting and charge mobility of the resulting polymer acceptor. In addition, detailed morphology investigations reveal that the PY2F‐T‐based blend shows smaller domain spacing and higher domain purity, which significantly suppress charge recombination as supported by time‐resolved techniques. These polymer properties enable simultaneously enhanced JSC and FF of the PY2F‐T‐based devices, eventually delivering device efficiencies of over 15%, significantly outperforming that of the devices based on the non‐fluorinated PY‐T polymer (13%). More importantly, the PY2F‐T‐based active layers can be processed under ambient conditions and still achieve a 14.37% efficiency. They can also be processed using non‐halogenated solvent o‐xylene (no additive) and yield a decent performance of 13.05%. This work demonstrates the success of the fluorination strategy in the design of high‐performance polymer acceptors, which provide guidelines for developing new all‐PSCs with better efficiencies and stabilities for commercial applications.

Abstract:Polymerization of small molecule acceptors (SMAs) has been proved to be an effective strategy to design polymer acceptors, in which the polymerization reaction is conducted via the coupling between the end groups of SMAs and linkers. However, polymer acceptors synthesized in this polymerization way cannot remain the favored packing modes of end groups in the original SMAs. Herein, we propose a strategy for designing polymer acceptors with grafted SMA units via the polymerization between central building blocks of SMAs and linkers. Polymer acceptors designed using this strategy can not only free the end groups to facilitate effective packing similar to SMAs but also form extended conjugation and double charge transport channels. With this strategy, a polymer acceptor SH-1 was synthesized, which shows more compact and ordered intermolecular packing in both neat and blended films compared with the corresponding SH-2 synthesized by conventional copolymerization via end groups and linkers. The all-polymer solar cells based on PM6:SH-1 showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.14%, substantially higher than that of PM6:SH-2 based device with efficiency of 6.55%. This work provides a new strategy for design polymer acceptors with great potential through further careful regulation of both main building blocks and linker groups.

Abstract:We design and synthesize four fused-ring electron acceptors based on-6,6,12,12-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-indacenobis(dithieno[3,2-b-2',3'-d]thiophene) as the electron-rich unit and 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanones with 0-2 fluorine substituents as the electron-deficient units. These four molecules exhibit broad (550-850 nm) and strong absorption with high extinction coefficients of (2.1-2.5) x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1). Fluorine substitution downshifts the LUMO energy level, red-shifts the absorption spectrum, and enhances electron mobility. The polymer solar cells based on the fluorinated electron acceptors exhibit power conversion efficiencies as high as 11.5%, much higher than that of their nonfluorinated counterpart (7.7%). We investigate the effects of the fluorine atom number and position on electronic properties, charge transport, film morphology, and photovoltaic properties.

Abstract:AbstractPolymerization sites of small molecule acceptors (SMAs) play vital roles in determining device performance of all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). Different from our recent work about fluoro‐ and bromo‐ co‐modified end group of IC‐FBr (a mixture of IC‐FBr1 and IC‐FBr2), in this paper, we synthesized and purified two regiospecific fluoro‐ and bromo‐ substituted end groups (IC‐FBr‐o & IC‐FBr‐m), which were then employed to construct two regio‐regular polymer acceptors named PYF‐T‐o and PYF‐T‐m, respectively. In comparison with its isomeric counterparts named PYF‐T‐m with different conjugated coupling sites, PYF‐T‐o exhibits stronger and bathochromic absorption to achieve better photon harvesting. Meanwhile, PYF‐T‐o adopts more ordered inter‐chain packing and suitable phase separation after blending with the donor polymer PM6, which resulted in suppressed charge recombination and efficient charge transport. Strikingly, we observed a dramatic performance difference between the two isomeric polymer acceptors PYF‐T‐o and PYF‐T‐m. While devices based on PM6:PYF‐T‐o can yield power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.2 %, devices based on PM6:PYF‐T‐m only show poor efficiencies of 1.4 %. This work demonstrates the success of configuration‐unique fluorinated end groups in designing high‐performance regular polymer acceptors, which provides guidelines towards developing all‐PSCs with better efficiencies.
Regioregular Narrow‐Bandgap n‐Type Polymers with High Electron Mobility Enabling Highly Efficient All‐Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Narrow-bandgap n-type polymers with high electron mobility are urgently demanded for the development of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Here, two regioregular narrow-bandgap polymer acceptors, L15 and MBTI, with two electron-deficient segments are synthesized by copolymerizing two dibrominated fused-ring electron acceptors (FREA) with distannylated aromatic imide, respectively. Taking full advantage of the FREA and the imide, both polymer acceptors show narrow bandgap and high electron mobility. Benefiting from the more extended absorption, better backbone ordering, and higher electron mobility than those of its regiorandom analog, the L15-based all-PSC yields a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.2% when blended with the polymer donor PM6. More importantly, MBTI incorporating a benzothiophene-core FREA segment shows relatively higher frontier molecular orbital levels than L15, forming a cascade-like energy level alignment with L15 and PM6. Based on this, ternary all-PSCs are designed where MBTI is introduced as a guest into the PM6:L15 host system. Thanks to further optimal blend morphology and more balanced charge transport, the PCE is improved up to 16.2%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs. The results demonstrate that combining an FREA and an aromatic imide to construct regioregular narrow-bandgap polymer acceptors provides an effective approach to fabricate highly efficient all-PSCs.
