Abstract:The concept of collinear spontaneous true ternary fission of 252Cf is subject to critical analysis. The conclusion is that the collinear flight of the fragments turns out to be a natural and most probable mode. The collinearity arises in the model on the prescission stage as a result of the account of the principles of the collective Bohr's model. It is partly destroyed at the post-scission stage of spreading of the fragments due to their Coulomb interaction, with the allowance for the spin effects arising at the moment of scission. The final angular distribution of the fragments is calculated by means of the trajectory simulations. The calculated relative angle of the heavy and light fragments is kept 180 degrees with an uncertainty within 0.4 degree, which justifies search for a collinear tri-partition at the modern stage of experiment.

Abstract:We consider the collinear ternary fission which is a sequential ternary decay with a very short time between the ruptures of two necks connecting the middle cluster of the ternary nuclear system and outer fragments. In particular, we consider the case where the Coulomb field of the first massive fragment separated during the first step of the fission produces a lower pre-scission barrier in the second step of the residual part of the ternary system. In this case, we obtain a probability of about $10^{-3}$ for the yield of massive clusters such as \nuclide[70]{Ni}, \nuclide[80-82]{Ge}, \nuclide[86]{Se}, and \nuclide[94]{Kr} in the ternary fission of \nuclide[252]{Cf}. These products appear together with the clusters having mass numbers of $A = 132$--$140$. The results show that the yield of a heavy cluster such as \nuclide[68-70]{Ni} would be followed by a product of $A = 138$--$148$ with a large probability as observed in the experimental data obtained with the FOBOS spectrometer at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The third product is not observed. The landscape of the potential energy surface shows that the configuration of the Ni + Ca + Sn decay channel is lower about 12 MeV than that of the Ca + Ni + Sn channel. This leads to the fact, that the yield of Ni and Sn is large. The analysis on the dependence of the velocity of the middle fragment on mass numbers of the outer products leads to the conclusion that, in the collinear tripartition channel of \nuclide[252]{Cf}, the middle cluster has a very small velocity, which does not allow it to be found in experiments.

Abstract:The longitudinal ternary fission is studied using the generalized liquid drop model. The proximity energy and the charge and mass asymmetries are taken into account. Spherical parent and daughter nuclei are considered. The shape sequence selected to simulate the quasimolecular three-body shapes is built from different but connected elliptic half lemniscatoids. The potential barriers are much lower when the central fragment is the smallest one and particularly when it is an α particle. The 2α emission can be described as a particular prolate fission with emission of two particles at the tips of the deformed nucleus. Abstract:The microscopic framework of time-dependent covariant density functional theory is applied to a systematic study of ternary quasifission in collisions of pairs of U238 nuclei. It is shown that the inclusion of octupole degree of freedom in the case of head-to-head collisions extends the energy window in which ternary quasifission occurs, and greatly enhances the number of nucleons contained in a middle fragment. Dynamical pairing correlations, included here in the time-dependent Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer approximation, prevent the occurrence of ternary quasifission in head-to-head collisions, and have an effect on the location of the energy window in which a middle fragment is formed in tail-to-tail collisions. Abstract:We explain how the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking ensures that Poincaré covariant analyses of the three valence–quark scattering problem in continuum quantum field theory yield a picture of the nucleon as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises primarily through the sum of two separate contributions. One involves aspects of the non-Abelian character of Quantum Chromodynamics that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate tight, dynamical color-antitriplet quark–quark correlations in the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector-isotriplet channels. This attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation, which is required in order to ensure that each valence–quark participates in all diquark correlations to the complete extent allowed by its quantum numbers. Combining these effects, we arrive at a properly antisymmetrised Faddeev wave function for the nucleon and calculate, e.g. the flavor-separated versions of the Dirac and Pauli form factors and the proton’s leading-twist parton distribution amplitude. We conclude that available data and planned experiments are capable of validating the proposed picture.
Employing ternary fission of $^{242}$Pu as a probe of very neutron rich matter

Abstract:Detailed assessments of the ability of recent theoretical approaches to modeling existing experimental data for ternary fission confirm earlier indications that the dominant mode of cluster formation in ternary fission is clusterization in very neutron rich, very low density, essentially chemically equilibrated, nucleonic matter. An extended study and comparison of these approaches applied to ternary fission yields in the thermal neutron induced reaction $^{241}$Pu($n_{\rm th}$,f) has been undertaken to refine the characterization of the source matter. The resonance gas approximation has been improved taking in-medium effects on the binding energies into account. A temperature of 1.29 MeV, density of $6.7 \times 10^{-5}$ nucleons/fm$^3$ and proton fraction $Y_p$ = 0.035 are found to provide a good representation of yields of the ternary emitted light particles and clusters. In particular, results for $Z= 1$ and 2 isotopes are presented. Isotopes with larger $Z$ are discussed, and the roles of medium and continuum effects, even at very low density are illustrated.

Abstract:The existence of multi-neutron systems has always been a debatable question. Indeed, both inter-nucleon correlations and a large continuum coupling occur in these states. We then employ the ab-initio no-core Gamow shell model to calculate the resonant energies and widths of the trineutron and tetraneutron systems with realistic interactions. Our results indicate that trineutron and tetraneutron are both unbound and bear broad widths. The calculated energy and width of tetraneutron are also comparable with recent experimental data. Moreover, our calculations suggest that the energy of trineutron is lower than that of tetraneutron, while its resonance width is also narrower. This strongly suggests that trineutron is more likely to be experimentally observed than tetraneutron. We thus suggest experimentalists to search for trineutron at low energy.

Abstract:In the frame of the random neck rupture and multichannel fission model, the fragment yield, average total kinetic energy distributions and prompt neutron multiplicities of the neutron induced 233,235,238U(n,f) fission covering the incident neutron energy range from thermal to 6 MeV are calculated. The theoretical results are in accord with the experimental data.

Abstract:A microscopic understanding of (anti)deuteron production in hadron-hadron collisions is the subject of many experimental and theoretical efforts in nuclear physics. This topic is also very relevant for astrophysics, since the rare production of antinuclei in our Universe could be a doorway to discover new physics. In this work, we describe a new coalescence afterburner for event generators based on the Wigner function formalism and we apply it to the (anti)deuteron case, taking into account a realistic particle emitting source. The model performance is validated using the EPOS and PYTHIA event generators applied to proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV, triggered for high multiplicity events, and the experimental data measured by ALICE in the same collision system. The model relies on the direct measurement of the particle emitting source carried out by means of nucleon-nucleon femtoscopic correlations in the same collision system and energy. The resulting model is used to predict deuteron differential spectra assuming different deuteron wavefunctions within the Wigner function formalism. The predicted deuteron spectra show a clear sensitivity to the choice of the deuteron wavefunction. The Argonne $v_{18}$ wavefunction provides the best description of the experimental data. This model can now be used to study the production of (anti)deuterons over a wide range of collision energies and be extended to heavier nuclei.

Abstract:We suggest to explore an entirely new method to experimentally and theoretically study the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter based on the triple nuclear collisions (TNC). We simulated the TNC using the UrQMD 3.4 model at the beam center-of-mass collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is found that in the most central and simultaneous TNC the initial baryonic charge density is about 3 times higher than the one achieved in the usual binary nuclear collisions at the same energies. As a consequence, the production of protons and $\Lambda$-hyperons is increased by a factor of 2 and 1.5, respectively. Using the MIT Bag model equation we study the evolution of the central cell in TNC and demonstrate that for the top RHIC energy of collision the baryonic chemical potential is 2-2.5 times larger than the one achieved in the binary nuclear collision at the same type of reaction. Based on these estimates, we show that TNC offers an entirely new possibility to study the QCD phase diagram at very high baryonic charge densities.

An Evaluation Of The Possible Effect Of Tetra-neutron Production On Ternary Fission Yields

Abstract:In this work, we study the effect of including a resonant state of four neutrons in the low-density warm nuclear equation of state, using a relativistic mean-field formalism, where in-medium effects are considered. For that purpose, the abundances of 62 different clusters immersed in a gas of protons and neutrons, are calculated with and without the presence of this resonant tetraneutron state. Ternary fission experiments are environments where not only these clusters can be formed, but also where such thermodynamic conditions of low densities and moderate temperatures can be achieved. The calculated yields of isotopes with and without the tetraneutron included are then compared with experimentally observed ternary fission yields. While the results indicate that the tetraneutron has little effect on yields of other clusters under the existing ternary fission conditions, a possibly observable effect on yields of clusters emitted from the neck region in mid-peripheral heavy ion collisions is clearly suggested.

Abstract:We propose a new, rapidly convergent, the so-called Fourier over Spheroid (FoS), shape parametrization to model fission of heavy nuclei. Four collective coordinates are used to characterize the shape of the fissioning system, being its elongation, left-right asymmetry, neck size, and non-axiality. The potential energy landscape is computed within the macroscopic-microscopic approach, on the top of which the multi-dimensional Langevin equation is solved to describe the dynamics. Charge equilibration at scission and de-excitation of the primary fragments after scission are further considered. The model gives access to a wide variety of observables, including fission fragments mass, charge, and kinetic energy yields, fragment mean N/Z and post-scission neutron multiplicities, and importantly, their correlations. The latter are crucial to unravel the complexity of the fission process. The parameters of the model were tuned to reproduce experimental observation from thermal neutron-induced fission of 235U, and next used to discuss the transition from the asymmetric to symmetric fission along the Fm isotopic chain.

Abstract:Background: When multiple fission modes coexist in a given nucleus, distinct fragment yield distributions appear. Multimodal fission has been observed in a number of fissioning nuclei spanning the nuclear chart, and this phenomenon is expected to affect the nuclear abundances synthesized during the rapid neutron-capture process ( r -process). Purpose: In this study, we generalize the previously proposed hybrid model for fission-fragment yield distributions to predict competing fission modes and estimate the resulting yield distributions. Our framework allows for a comprehensive large-scale calculation of fission-fragment yields suited for r -process nuclear network studies. Methods: Nuclear density functional theory is employed to obtain the potential energy and collective inertia tensor on a multidimensional collective space defined by mass multipole moments. Fission pathways and their relative probabilities are determined using the nudged elastic band method. Based on this information, mass and charge fission yields are predicted using the recently developed hybrid model. Results: Fission properties of fermium isotopes are calculated in the axial quadrupole-octupole collective space for three energy density functionals (EDFs). Disagreement between the EDFs appears when multiple fission modes are present. Within our framework, the UNEDF1HFB EDF agrees best with experimental data. Calculations in the axial quadrupole-octupole-hexadecapole collective space improve the agreement with the experiment for SkM* . We also discuss the sensitivity of fission predictions on the choice of EDF for several superheavy nuclei. Conclusions: Fission-fragment yield predictions for nuclei with multiple fission modes are sensitive to the underlying EDF. Abstract:The two-equation of state model is used to describe the hadron-quark phase transition in dense-hot matter formed in heavy-ion collisions. The nonlinear Walecka model is used to describe the hadronic phase. For the quark phase, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model coupled to Polyakov-loop fields is used to include both the chiral and (de) confinement dynamics. The phase diagrams are derived from the Gibbs conditions and compared with the results obtained in the hadron-NJL model without confinement. As in the hadron-NJL case a first order transition is observed, but with a critical end point at much higher temperatures, a consequence of the confinement mechanism that reduces the degrees of freedom of the quark matter in proximity to the phase transition. Particular attention is devoted to the phase transition in isospin asymmetric matter. Interesting isospin effects are found at high baryon density and reduced temperatures, which are in fact also common to other quark models, like the MIT bag model and the NJL model. Some possible observational signals are suggested to probe in heavy-ion collision experiments at intermediate energies.

Abstract:A two-phonon version of the relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation introduces as a new class of many-body models for nuclear structure calculations based on the covariant energy density functional. As a fully consistent extension of the relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation, the relativistic two-phonon model implies fragmentation of nuclear states over two-quasiparticle and two-phonon configurations coupled to each other. In particular, we show how the lowest two-phonon $1^-$ state, identified as a member of the $[2^+\otimes 3^-]$ quintuplet, emerges from the coherent two-quasiparticle pygmy dipole mode in vibrational nuclei. The inclusion of the two-phonon configurations into the model space allows a quantitative description of the positions and the reduced transition probabilities of the lowest 1$^-$ states in tin isotopes $^{112,116,120,124}$Sn as well as the low-energy fraction of the dipole strength below the giant dipole resonance without any adjustment procedures. The model is applied to the low-lying dipole strength in neutron-rich $^{68,70,72}$Ni isotopes. Recent experimental data for $^{68}$Ni are reproduced fairly well.

Abstract:Fissioning nuclei produce with increasing excitation varying yields of fragments. For compound nuclei ranging from Th-232 to Pu-242 endowed with excitation energies typically between 0 and 10 MeV, we analyze these variations in terms of a fission-channel model. Most of the variations can be attributed to changing channel probabilities. We present a systematics of channel probabilities with respect to compound nuclei and their excitation energies, and we relate the systematics to potential energy which the nuclei experience when they float to scission. The trend, which is most difficult to explain, is a shift in the energy sensitivity of the standard channels, as one compares light with heavy compound nuclei. According to their behavior, we divide nuclei into standard I increasers and decreasers and attribute the difference to the standard secondary barriers. As a basic concept, bifurcation ratios are introduced, and a novel expression for transmission coefficients is proposed. [S0556-2813(99)05402-3].
