Abstract:We discuss briefly the phases of nuclear single particle motion and collective motion. Meanwhile we review the status of the research on the phase structure of the vibration, axially symmetric rotation and gamma-soft rotation of the collective motion and the shape phase transition induced by nucleon number and angular momentum. In addition we depict simply the nuclear liquid gas phase transition as well as the deconfinement and chiral phase transition of strong interacting matter.

Abstract:Two major recent developments in theory and computational resources created the favorable conditions for achieving a microscopic description of fission dynamics in classically allowed regions of the collective potential energy surface, almost eighty years after its discovery in 1939 by Hahn and Strassmann [1]. The first major development was in theory, the extension of the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) [2–5] to superfluid fermion systems [6]. The second development was in computing, the emergence of powerful enough supercomputers capable of solving the complex systems of equations describing the time evolution in three dimensions without any restrictions of hundreds of strongly interacting nucleons. Thus the conditions have been created to renounce phenomenological models and incomplete microscopic treatments with uncontrollable approximations and/or assumptions in the description of the complex dynamics of fission. Even though the available nuclear energy density functionals (NEDFs) are phenomenological still, their accuracy is improving steadily and the prospects of being able to perform calculations of the nuclear fission dynamics and to predict many properties of the fission fragments, otherwise not possible to extract from experiments.

Abstract:Atomic nuclei are quantum many-body systems of protons and neutrons held together by strong nuclear forces. Under the proper conditions, nuclei can break into two (sometimes three) fragments which will subsequently decay by emitting particles. This phenomenon is called nuclear fission. Since different fission events may produce different fragmentations, the end-products of all fissions that occurred in a small chemical sample of matter comprise hundreds of different isotopes, including α particles, together with a large number of emitted neutrons, photons, electrons and antineutrinos. The extraordinary complexity of this process, which happens at length scales of the order of a femtometer, mostly takes less than a femtosecond but is not entirely over until all the lingering β decays have completed – which can take years – is a fascinating window into the physics of atomic nuclei. While fission may be more naturally known in the context of its technological applications, it also plays a crucial role in the synthesis of heavy elements in astrophysical environments. In both cases, simulations are needed for the many systems or energies inaccessible to experiments in the laboratory. In this context, the level of accuracy and precision required poses formidable challenges to nuclear theory. The goal of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the theoretical methods employed in the description of nuclear fission.

Abstract:The Incomplete-Fusion-Fragmentation Model has been used to reproduce nicely the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition probed in the reaction of Au + Au at 600A MeV. The analysis of the relative yields of decay modes for the projectile remnant as a function of [Z(bound)] shows clearly the competition and transformation processes of various decay modes of projectile remnant with decreasing of [Z(bound)] The agreement between theoretical and experimental results for the analysis of relative yield of decay modes indicates that the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition is composed of the decay mode transformations.

Abstract:The fission-fragments mass-yield of 236U is obtained by an approximate solution of the eigenvalue problem of the collective Hamiltonian that describes the dynamics of the fission process whose degrees of freedom are: the fission (elongation), the neck and the mass-asymmetry mode. The macroscopic-microscopic method is used to evaluate the potential energy surface. The macroscopic energy part is calculated using the liquid drop model and the microscopic corrections are obtained using the Woods-Saxon single-particle levels. The four dimensional modified Cassini ovals shape parametrization is used to describe the shape of the fissioning nucleus. The mass tensor is taken within the cranking-type approximation. The final fragment mass distribution is obtained by weighting the adiabatic density distribution in the collective space with the neck-dependent fission probability. The neck degree of freedom is found to play a significant role in determining that final fragment mass distribution.

Abstract:The two-Equation of State (EoS) model is used to describe the hadron-quark phase transition in asymmetric matter formed at high density in heavy-ion collisions. For the quark phase, the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) effective theory is used to investigate the influence of dynamical quark mass effects on the phase transition. At variance to the MIT-Bag results, with fixed current quark masses, the main important effect of the chiral dynamics is the appearance of an end point for the coexistence zone. We show that a first order hadron-quark phase transition may take place in the region T- (50 - 80) MeV and rho B - (2 - 4) rho 0, which is possible to be probed in the new planned facilities, such as FAIR at GSI-Darmstadt and NICA at JINR-Dubna. From isospin properties of the mixed phase some possible signals are suggested. The importance of chiral symmetry and dynamical quark mass on the hadron-quark phase transition is stressed.

Abstract:We review the status of the research on the phase structure and phase transitions of nucleus and strong interacting matter briefly. It shows that the related studies are the very active current frontier commonly interested by nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, statistical physics and other areas. A lot of significant progress has been made. However, not only concrete problems but also researching approaches need to be studied further.

Abstract:The hindrance to complete fusion is a phenomenon presenting in the most part of the capture events in reactions with massive nuclei. This phenomenon is due to the onset of the quasifission process which competes with complete fusion during the evolution of the composed system formed at capture stage. The branching ratio between quasifission and complete fusion strongly depends from different characteristics of reacting nuclei in the entrance channel. The experimental and theoretical investigations of reaction dynamics connected with the formation of composed system is nowadays the main subject of the nuclear reactions. There is ambiguity in establishment of the reaction mechanism leading to the observed binary fissionlike fragments. The correct estimation of the fusion probability is important in planning experiments for the synthesis of superheavy elements. The experimental determination of evaporation residues only is not enough to restore the true reaction dynamics. The experimental observation of fissionlike fragments only cannot assure the correct distinguishing of products of the quasifission, fast fission, and fusion-fission processes which have overlapping in the mass (angular, kinetic energy) distributions of fragments. In this paper we consider a wide set of reactions (with different mass asymmetry and mass symmetry parameters) with the aim to explain the role played by many quantities on the reaction mechanisms. We also present the results of study of the 48Ca+249Bk reaction used to synthesize superheavy nuclei with Z = 117 by the determination of the evaporation residue cross sections and the effective fission barriers < Bf > of excited nuclei formed along the de-excitation cascade of the compound nucleus.

Abstract:We construct a simple two-phase equation of state intended to resemble that of compressed baryon-rich matter and then introduce a gradient term in the compressional energy density to take account of fintie-range effects in non-uniform configurations. With this model we study the interface between the two coexisting phases and obtain estimates for the associated interface tension. Subsequently, we incorporate the finite-range equation of state into ideal or viscous fluid dynamics and derive the collective dispersion relation for the mechanically unstable modes of bulk matter in the spinodal region of the thermodynamic phase diagram. Combining these results with time scales extracted from existing dynamical transport simulations, we discuss the prospects for spinodal phase separation to occur in nuclear collisions. We argue that these can be optimized by a careful tuning of the collision energy to maximize the time spent by the bulk of the system inside the mechanically unstable spinodal region of the phase diagram. Our specific numerical estimates suggest cautious optimism that this phenomenon may in fact occur, though a full dynamical simulation is needed for a detailed assessment.

Nuclear Quantum Many-Body Dynamics: From Collective Vibrations to Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Abstract:The incomplete-fusion-fragmentation model is used to analyze the fragmentation of the projectile remnant in the 600 MeV/u Au + Au reaction. The theoretical results of the mass number, the excitation energy, and the thermodynamic temperature of the projectile remnant agree well with experimental data. The backbending structure in the curve of temperature as a function of the excitation energy per nucleon, i.e., the evidence of liquid-gas phase transition, is reproduced and related to the decay mode transformation from the dominance of the multifragmentation mode to the vaporization mode.

Abstract:The mass yield and the charge dispersion of secondary fragments produced in high-energetic proton-xenon bombardment are analysed in the frame of our statistical multifragmentation model. The critical mass distribution as well as the charge dispersion, which have led to the discussion of a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, are easily reproduced within our model. A clear signal of a “phase transition” at T=5 MeV is found and is analysed in terms of various multifragment correlations.

Abstract:We suggest a new theoretical method to describe the baryon clusterization of nuclei in hadron-nucleus reactions. As an example we have explored the nuclei production in π−+C and π−+W collisions at p lab =1.7 GeV by using the hybrid approach consisting of the Ultra Relativistic Quantum Dynamics Model (UrQMD) and the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM). The UrQMD describes the production of new baryons, and the propagation toward the subnuclear densities with the fluctuations leading to the formation of excited baryonic clusters. The SMM describes the production of final nuclei and hypernuclei after interaction of baryons inside these clusters. We demonstrate the transverse momenta, rapidity, mass distributions and excitation energies of both primary clusters and final nuclei (including hypernuclei). The results of the UrQMD and UrQMD+SMM model calculations for different clusterization parameters are compared with the available HADES experimental data on baryon production, providing a very promising window for future research on nuclei and hypernuclei formation in these reactions.

Abstract:We explain how the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking ensures that Poincaré covariant analyses of the three valence–quark scattering problem in continuum quantum field theory yield a picture of the nucleon as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises primarily through the sum of two separate contributions. One involves aspects of the non-Abelian character of Quantum Chromodynamics that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate tight, dynamical color-antitriplet quark–quark correlations in the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector-isotriplet channels. This attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation, which is required in order to ensure that each valence–quark participates in all diquark correlations to the complete extent allowed by its quantum numbers. Combining these effects, we arrive at a properly antisymmetrised Faddeev wave function for the nucleon and calculate, e.g. the flavor-separated versions of the Dirac and Pauli form factors and the proton’s leading-twist parton distribution amplitude. We conclude that available data and planned experiments are capable of validating the proposed picture.

Abstract:Nuclear fission process is a complex large-amplitude dynamic process of quantum many-body systems, and the development of predictive fission descriptions is a well-known challenge in nuclear physics. To describe the fission observables, there are some phenomenological and semi-microscopic models, which rely on adjustments of parameters. The microscopic fission theory based on effective nuclear interactions in principle can avoid free parameters, but they are not ready for accurate applications. This work discussed about the fission of compound nuclei, which is particularly useful for synthesizing superheavy elements. In addition, we discussed the adiabatic and non-adiabatic microscopic fission models. The adiabatic fission model performs better in describing fission observables, while non-adiabatic fission models are valuable to explore fission mechanisms. We discussed the issues and challenges of current fission theories, and realized the fission process is extremely complicated, and some prospects of fission theory have also been discussed.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that a new phase structure will emerge in nuclear matter at high temperature and density. In this article the QCD (quantum chromodynamic) phase transitions are briefly reviewed from both theoretical and experimental aspects. Basing on the general principle of QCD and modern phase transition theory, we analyze potential phases in the strong interacting nuclear matter. The phase structure could be understood intuitively through the breaking and restoration of fundamental symmetries of QCD. In the space spanned by the temperature, baryon and isospin chemical potential there are different phases corresponding to three important symmetries, i.e. the color, chiral and isospin. At low temperature and density, the color and isospin symmetries are preserved, while the chiral one is spontaneously broken. At high temperature or density, the color or isospin or both of them would be broken as the chiral restoration. In order to explore the detailed structure of the phase diagram various theoretical approaches of studying the transitions are introduced, such as lattice QCD, mean field calculation basing on effective models, functional renormalization group and Dyson-Schwinger equation. In experiments there are two kinds of physics systems to realize conditions of QCD phase transitions: the relativistic heavy ion collisions and compact stars. Nuclear collision is the only way to approach hot QCD in laboratories on the earth. We focus on some robust probes to the quark gluon plasma formed in the early stage of the collisions. There are generally two types of the traditional signals which are focusing on the profile of the fire ball and the internal interaction of it respectively. For the first case we introduce collective flows as observables for the shape of fire ball. While for the second we review the jet quenching and the heavy flavor suppression. In the hot fire ball the classical transport theory should be modified by including quantum effects induced by the chiral restoration. This novel transport phenomenon of QCD at high temperature is named by the chiral anomalous transport. On the phase transitions at high density, we review the recent progress on color superconductivity and pion superfluidity. Color superconductivity is formed at high baryon chemical potential when quarks pair with each other into diquarks and condense. While pion superfluidity would emerge at high isospin chemical potential with pion condensate. Model studies suggest these states are able to exist in the core of compact star. By modifying the structure of them, such as the mass-radius relation, these states are expected to be identified by astronomical observation at higher precision. Currently dense systems are difficult to produce at main facilities of the world, such as RHIC (relativistic heavy ion collider) and LHC (large hadron collider) because of the designed high energy scale of the accelerators. Therefore it is a critical need for the facilities which could cover the low and medium energy region where the potential critical point and various phase structures would locate. Considering the running and constructing heavy ion facilities, the CSR (cooler-storage-ring) in Lanzhou and the high intensity HIAF (heavy-ion accelerator facility) in Huizhou, the properties of the new QCD phases and their realizations in nuclear collisions will be the new frontier of nuclear physics in China.
Microscopic theory of nuclear fission: a review

Abstract:This article reviews how nuclear fission is described within nuclear density functional theory. A distinction should be made between spontaneous fission, where half-lives are the main observables and quantum tunnelling the essential concept, and induced fission, where the focus is on fragment properties and explicitly time-dependent approaches are often invoked. Overall, the cornerstone of the density functional theory approach to fission is the energy density functional formalism. The basic tenets of this method, including some well-known tools such as the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory, effective two-body nuclear potentials such as the Skyrme and Gogny force, finite-temperature extensions and beyond mean-field corrections, are presented succinctly. The energy density functional approach is often combined with the hypothesis that the time-scale of the large amplitude collective motion driving the system to fission is slow compared to typical time-scales of nucleons inside the nucleus. In practice, this hypothesis of adiabaticity is implemented by introducing (a few) collective variables and mapping out the many-body Schrödinger equation into a collective Schrödinger-like equation for the nuclear wave-packet. The region of the collective space where the system transitions from one nucleus to two (or more) fragments defines what are called the scission configurations. The inertia tensor that enters the kinetic energy term of the collective Schrödinger-like equation is one of the most essential ingredients of the theory, since it includes the response of the system to small changes in the collective variables. For this reason, the two main approximations used to compute this inertia tensor, the adiabatic time-dependent HFB and the generator coordinate method, are presented in detail, both in their general formulation and in their most common approximations. The collective inertia tensor enters also the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) formula used to extract spontaneous fission half-lives from multi-dimensional quantum tunnelling probabilities (For the sake of completeness, other approaches to tunnelling based on functional integrals are also briefly discussed, although there are very few applications.) It is also an important component of some of the time-dependent methods that have been used in fission studies. Concerning the latter, both the semi-classical approaches to time-dependent nuclear dynamics and more microscopic theories involving explicit quantum-many-body methods are presented. One of the hallmarks of the microscopic theory of fission is the tremendous amount of computing needed for practical applications. In particular, the successful implementation of the theories presented in this article requires a very precise numerical resolution of the HFB equations for large values of the collective variables. This aspect is often overlooked, and several sections are devoted to discussing the resolution of the HFB equations, especially in the context of very deformed nuclear shapes. In particular, the numerical precision and iterative methods employed to obtain the HFB solution are documented in detail. Finally, a selection of the most recent and representative results obtained for both spontaneous and induced fission is presented, with the goal of emphasizing the coherence of the microscopic approaches employed. Although impressive progress has been achieved over the last two decades to understand fission microscopically, much work remains to be done. Several possible lines of research are outlined in the conclusion.
