Abstract:Steam condensation is an essential phenomenon used to transfer heat effectively via harnessing the latent heat for various energy applications. However, the presence of noncondensable gas (NCG) significantly reduces the condensation heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of steam. Despite numerous attempts, formulating an accurate and robust model of condensation HTC of steam-air mixtures remains elusive. Machine learning (ML) provides an alternative method to model the steam condensation. Although data-driven ML methods have shown high accuracy, they are limited in the extrapolation ability when facing with data outside of the training ranges. In response to this, we developed a physics-constrained extreme gradient boosting (PC-XGBoost) model. Balancing the merits of physical model and data-driven model, we have designed a new loss function considering mean squared error loss and physics-constrained loss derived from a heat and mass transfer analogy model. Compared with other ML models, the purely data-driven XGBoost model shows the least mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.4 %, less than a quarter of that of the best conventional model. Two reduced databases and corresponding extrapolation databases were built to explore the model extrapolation ability. The MAE of data-driven XGBoost model in extrapolation scenarios increases by more than four times compared to the interpolated scenarios. After the introduction of physical constraints, the MAE of PC-XGBoost is reduced by more than 20 %, demonstrating improved extrapolation ability. This study offers an approach towards the development of accurate and robust ML model of condensation HTC of steam-NCG mixtures, operational even with databases of limited sample size.
