Abstract:The impact of the reaction environment on the formation of the polycrystalline layer and its biomedical (antimicrobial) applications were analyzed in detail. Copper oxide layers were synthesized using an electrodeposition technique, with varying additives influencing the morphology, thickness, and chemical composition. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed the successful formation of polyhedral structures. Unmodified samples (CuL) crystallized as a mixture of copper oxide (I) and (II), with a thickness of approximately 1.74 μm. The inclusion of the nonconductive polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) during synthesis led to a regular and compact CuO-rich structure (CuL-PVP). Conversely, adding glucose resulted in forming a Cu2O-rich nanostructured layer (CuL-D(+)G). Both additives significantly reduced the sample thickness to 617 nm for CuL-PVP and 560 nm for CuL-D(+)G. The effectiveness of the synthesized copper oxide layers was demonstrated in their ability to significantly reduce the T4 phage titer by approximately 2.5-3 log. Notably, CuL-PVP and CuL-D(+)G showed a more substantial reduction in the MS2 phage titer, achieving about a 5-log decrease. In terms of antibacterial activity, CuL and CuL-PVP exhibited moderate efficacy against Escherichia coli, whereas CuL-D(+)G reduced the E. coli titer to undetectable levels. All samples induced similar reductions in Staphylococcus aureus titer. The study revealed differential susceptibilities, with Gram-negative bacteria being more vulnerable to CuL-D(+)G due to its unique composition and morphology. The antimicrobial properties were attributed to the redox cycling of Cu ions, which generate ROS, and the mechanical damage caused by nanostructured surfaces. A crucial finding was the impact of surface composition rather than surface morphology on antimicrobial efficacy. Samples with a dominant Cu2O composition exhibited potent antibacterial and antiviral properties, whereas CuO-rich materials showed predominantly enhanced antiviral activity. This research highlights the significance of phase composition in determining the antimicrobial properties of copper oxide layers synthesized through electrodeposition.

Abstract:In this paper, an organic stabilized and dispersive Cu nanowires (NWs) ink was proposed. We investigated and determined the recipe of the expectant ink framework and proved its usage as flexible transparent conductive films. The influences of main solutes on stability and dispersity of the ink were discussed detailedly. The stability was evaluated by the sedimentation time of the ink and the dispersity was weighed by the morphology of the freely-dispersed Cu NWs ink on substrates. The electric properties of the following conductive films were obatained by Hall effect measurement system. A simple and efficient method has carried out for fabricating the transparent electrodes from the prepared Cu NWs ink. These electrodes possessed a good performance in both conductivity and transmittance, which verified the pragmaticality of suggested Cu NWs ink as well. Typically, the sheet resistances of the processed electrodes made by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique were about 80 Ω·sq−1, and the light transmittances at 550 nm were over 80%. The figures of merit of them were over 10−3 Ω−1.

Abstract:The current Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has exemplified the need for simple and efficient prevention strategies that can be rapidly implemented to mitigate infection risks. Various surfaces have a long history of antimicrobial properties and are well described for the prevention of bacterial infections. However, their effect on many viruses has not been studied in depth. In the context of COVID-19, several surfaces, including copper (Cu) and silver (Ag) coatings have been described as efficient antiviral measures that can easily be implemented to slow viral transmission. In this study, we detected antiviral properties against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) on surfaces, which were coated with Cu by magnetron sputtering as thin Cu films or as Cu/Ag ultrathin bimetallic nanopatches. However, no effect of Ag on viral titers was observed, in clear contrast to its well-known antibacterial properties. Further enhancement of Ag ion release kinetics based on an electrochemical sacrificial anode mechanism did not increase antiviral activity. These results clearly demonstrate that Cu and Ag thin film systems display significant differences in antiviral and antibacterial properties which need to be considered upon implementation.

Abstract:The synthesis of copper nanowires (CuNWs) using modified polyols with hexadecylamine or octadecylamine as capping agents, known for their ease of operation, rapid reaction, and suitability for mass production, often encounters challenges such as the presence of copper particles, numerous copper nanorods, difficulty in purifying organic compounds, and air instability as by-products. In addressing these issues, this study introduces an innovative multiphase ultrasonic-assisted separation method. By utilizing ultrasound to accelerate the dissolution of hexadecylamine and facilitate the separation movement of CuNWs and by-products in hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases, the aim of achieving high purification of CuNWs is realized. Through the introduction of an ultra-thin hexadecylamine layer ( 3.5 nm) on the surface of CuNWs and leveraging the active adsorption of silver seed crystals, combined with the control CuNWs reaction concentration, silver-coated CuNWs with a dense and uniform surface thickness of 12–15 nm are obtained. By enhancing purity, stability, and cost-effectiveness, this research represents a significant advancement in the field of one-dimensional nanowires and their devices.
Development of a copper-graphene nanocomposite based transparent coating with antiviral activity against influenza virus

Abstract:Abstract Respiratory infections by RNA viruses are one of the major burdens upon global health and economy. Viruses like influenza or coronaviruses can be transmitted through respiratory droplets or contaminated surfaces. An effective antiviral coating can decrease the viability of the virus particles in the outside environment significantly, hence reducing their transmission rate. In this work, we have screened a series of nanoparticles and their composites for antiviral activity using Nano Luciferase based highly sensitive influenza A reporter virus. Using this screening system, we have identified copper-graphene (Cu-Gr) nanocomposite shows strong antiviral activity. Extensive material and biological characterization of the nanocomposite suggested a unique metal oxide embedded graphene sheet architecture that can inactivate the virion particles only within 30 minutes of pre-incubation and subsequently interferes with the entry of these virion particles into the host cell. This ultimately results in reduced viral gene expression, replication and production of progeny virus particles, slowing down the overall pace of progression of infection. Using PVA as a capping agent, we have been able to generate a Cu-Gr nanocomposite based highly transparent coating that retains its original antiviral activity in the solid form.
Virucidal Efficacy of Laser-Generated Copper Nanoparticle Coatings Against Model Coronavirus and Herpesvirus

Abstract:High-efficiency antiviral surfaces can be effective means to fight against viral diseases such as the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Copper and copper oxides, as well as their nanoparticles (Cu NPs) and coatings, are among the effective antiviral materials having internal and external biocidal effects on viruses. In this work, stable Cu NP colloids were produced via femtosecond laser ablation of the metal target in water containing sodium citrate. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that the 32 nm mean size nanoparticles are mixtures of mainly metallic copper and copper (I) oxide Cu2O. Polyvinyl butyral was utilized as the binding agent for the spray-coated Cu NPs. The virucidal efficacy of such coatings containing different Cu content ranging from 2.9 at.% to 11.2 at.%. was confirmed against animal-origin coronavirus containing RNA, the agent of avian infectious bronchitis (IBV), and herpesvirus containing DNA, the agent of bovine herpesvirus (BoHV-1) infection. It was demonstrated that after a short time of exposure, the Cu NPs-based coatings do not have a toxic effect on the cell cultures while demonstrating a negative effect on the biological activity of both model viruses that was confirmed by quantification of the viruses via the determination of tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) virus titre and their viral nucleic acids via determination of threshold cycle (Ct) employing real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. The assays showed that the decrease in TCID50 virus titre and increase in Ct values correlated with Cu content in Cu NPs-based coatings for both investigated viruses. Contact with coatings decreased IBV and BoHV-1 numbers from 99.42% to 100.00% and from 98.65% to 99.96% respectively. These findings suggest that Cu NPs show inhibitory effects leading to the inactivation of viruses and their nuclei regardless of the presence of a viral envelope.

Abstract:Abstract Nanostructured surfaces based on silver nanoparticles decorated ZnO–CuO core–shell nanowire arrays, which can assure protection against various environmental factors such as water and bacteria were developed by combining dry preparation techniques namely thermal oxidation in air, radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and thermal vacuum evaporation. Thus, high-aspect-ratio ZnO nanowire arrays were grown directly on zinc foils by thermal oxidation in air. Further ZnO nanowires were coated with a CuO layer by RF magnetron sputtering, the obtained ZnO–CuO core–shell nanowires being decorated with Ag nanoparticles by thermal vacuum evaporation. The prepared samples were comprehensively assessed from morphological, compositional, structural, optical, surface chemistry, wetting and antibacterial activity point of view. The wettability studies show that native Zn foil and ZnO nanowire arrays grown on it are featured by a high water droplet adhesion while ZnO–CuO core–shell nanowire arrays (before and after decoration with Ag nanoparticles) reveal a low water droplet adhesion. The antibacterial tests carried on Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) and Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium) emphasize that the nanostructured surfaces based on nanowire arrays present excellent antibacterial activity against both type of bacteria. This study proves that functional surfaces obtained by relatively simple and highly reproducible preparation techniques that can be easily scaled to large area are very attractive in the field of water repellent coatings with enhanced antibacterial function.

Abstract:The current global pandemic due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has demonstrated the necessity to develop novel materials with antimicrobial and antiviral activities to prevent the infection. One significant route for the spread of diseases is by the transmission of the virus through contact with contaminated surfaces. Antiviral surface treatments can help to reduce or even avoid these hazards. In particular, the development of active-virucidal fabrics or paints represents a very important challenge with multiple applications in hospitals, public transports, or schools. Modern, cutting-edge methods for creating antiviral surface coatings use either materials with a metal base or sophisticated synthetic polymers. Even if these methods are effective, they will still face significant obstacles in terms of large-scale applicability. Here, we describe the preparation of fabrics and paints treated with a scaled-up novel nanostructured biohybrid material composed of very small crystalline phosphate copper(II) nanoparticles, synthesized based on a technology that employs the use of a small amount of biological agent for its formation at room temperature in aqueous media. We demonstrate the efficient inactivation of the human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E), the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, and non-enveloped human rhinovirus 14 (HRV-14) (>99.9%) using an inexpensive, ecologically friendly coating agent. The reactive oxygen species produced during the oxidation of water or the more intensive reaction with hydrogen peroxide are believed to be the cause of the antiviral mechanism of the nanostructured material. In contrast to the release of a specific antiviral drug, this process does not consume the surface coating and does not need regeneration. A 12-month aging research that revealed no decline in antiviral activity is proof that the coating is durable in ambient circumstances. Also, the coated fabric can be reused after different washing cycles, even at moderate to high temperatures.
UV-mediated photochemical synthesis and investigation of the antiviral properties of Silver nanoparticle-polyvinyl butyral nanocomposite coatings as a novel antiviral material with high stability and activity

Abstract:Effectively developing new antimicrobial surfaces for viral diseases requires considerable research, money, and time. Moreover, new species of microorganisms and pathogens are constantly appearing or entering from other regions, which can cause epidemics or pandemics. The ongoing presence of SARS-CoV-2 underscores the need to develop new antimicrobial materials. In this context, a novel UV-irradiated photochemical in-situ synthesis method is introduced for producing durable, long-lasting antiviral silver-polymer (AgNP-PVB) nanocomposite coatings. These coatings are intended to mitigate infectious disease transmission across various frequently touched surfaces, such as door handles, keypads, bank encoders, telephone locks, lift buttons, etc. Additionally, the significance of the size and concentration of AgNP in influencing the physical and antiviral properties of these nanocomposite coatings is illustrated. Detailed studies of AgNP-PVB coatings were conducted using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The antiviral properties of the coatings were evaluated by a one-step reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (one-step qRT‒PCR) using synthetic SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Raman spectra signatures confirm AgNPs in the PVB matrix by matching identified peaks in X-ray diffractograms. AFM analysis revealed a reduction in AgNP size in the nanocomposite with an increase in the irradiation duration from 5 to 30 min. Spectroscopic results corresponding to AFM measurements highlighted specific wavelengths related to different AgNP size ranges. Contact angle measurements suggest that antiviral activity can be predicted by calculating the surface free energy (SFE) of the sample. As the SFE value increases, antiviral activity decreases. Nanocomposite coatings (with concentrations of 150, 200, 500, and 1000 ppm AgNP) are effective in reducing the activity of SARS-CoV-2, indicating their potential as long-acting preventive agents against viral infections. A methodology incorporating a specialized algorithm was devised for the application of the investigated coatings, which also integrates 3D scanning and printing techniques for fabricating complex geometry flexible protective cover. Subsequently, this coating was applied to produce a protective cover for the widely utilized public object, the door handle, employing 3D printing technology. As a result of the work, a long-term, durable antiviral AgNP-PVB nanocomposite coating with varying AgNP sizes (ranging from 15 to 118 nm) and concentrations (150, 200, 500, and 1000 ppm) was successfully developed.

On the emergence of antibacterial and antiviral copper cold spray coatings

Abstract:Abstract In this literature review, the antipathogenic properties and contact-mediated antibacterial and antiviral performance of copper cold spray surfaces are assessed and compared with alternative antimicrobial materials that are able to kill and/or inactivate infectious agents via direct contact. Discussion is also provided concerning the suitability of copper cold spray material consolidations as biocidal and viricidal surfaces that retain long-term functionality as a preventative measure against fomite transmission of pathogenic agents and hospital-acquired infections from contaminated high-touch surfaces. Numerable alternative antimicrobial coatings and surfaces that do not rely upon the oligodynamic action of copper are detailed. Given the ongoing need for recognition of said alternative antimicrobial materials by authoritative agencies, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the relevant literature on non-copper-based antipathogenic coatings and surfaces are then described. Furthermore, a wide-ranging take on antipathogenic copper cold spray coatings are provided and consideration is given to the distinctive grain-boundary mediated copper ion diffusion pathways found in optimizable, highly deformed, copper cold spray material consolidations that enable pathogen inactivation on surfaces from direct contact. To conclude this literature review, analysis of how copper cold spray coatings can be employed as a preventative measure against COVID-19 was also presented in light of on-going debates surrounding SARS-CoV-2’s non-primary, but non-negligible, secondary transmission pathway, and also presented in conjunction with the inevitability that future pathogens, which will be responsible for forthcoming global pandemics, may spread even more readily via fomite pathways too.

Essential oil mediated synthesis and application of highly stable copper nanoparticles as coatings on textiles and surfaces for rapid and sustained disinfection of microorganisms

Abstract:Rampant pathogenesis induced by communicable microbes has necessitated development of technologies for rapid and sustained disinfection of surfaces. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) have been widely reported for their antimicrobial properties. However, nanostructured copper is prone to oxidative dissolution in the oil phase limiting its sustained use on surfaces and coatings. The current study reports a systematic investigation of a simple synthesis protocol using fatty acid stabilizers (particularly essential oils) for synthesis of copper nanoparticles in the oil phase. Of the various formulations synthesized, rosemary oil stabilized copper nanoparticles (RMO CuNPs) were noted to have the best inactivation kinetics and were also most stable. Upon morphological characterization by TEM and EELS, these were found to be monodispersed (ᴓ 5-8 nm) with copper coexisting in all three oxidation states on the surface of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were dropcast on woven fabric of around 500 threads per inch and exposed to gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), enveloped RNA virus (phi6), non-enveloped RNA virus (MS2) and non-enveloped DNA virus (T4) to encompass the commonly encountered groups of pathogens. It was possible to completely disinfect 107 copies of all microorganisms within 40 minutes of exposure. Further, this formulation was incorporated with polyurethane as thinners and used to coat non-woven fabrics. These also exhibited antimicrobial properties. Sustained disinfection with less than 9% cumulative copper loss for upto 14 washes with soap water was observed. Based on the studies conducted, RMO CuNP in oil phase was found to have excellent potential of integration on surface coatings, paints and polymers for rapid and sustained disinfection of microbes on surfaces.

Abstract:Copper-based nanoinks are emerging as promising low-cost alternatives to widely used silver nanoinks in electronic printing. However, the spontaneous oxidation of copper under ambient conditions poses significant challenges to its broader application. To address this issue, this paper presents an economical, large-scale, and environmentally friendly method for fabricating Cu@Ag nanoparticles (Cu@Ag NPs). The as-prepared nanoparticles exhibit a narrow size distribution of approximately 100 nm and can withstand ambient exposure for at least 60 days without significant oxidation. The Cu@Ag-based ink, with a 60 wt% loading, was screen-printed onto a flexible polyimide substrate and subsequently heat-treated at 290 °C for 15 minutes under a nitrogen atmosphere. The sintered pattern displayed a low electrical resistivity of 25.5 μΩ·cm (approximately 15 times the resistivity of bulk copper) along with excellent reliability and mechanical fatigue strength. The innovative Cu@Ag NPs fabrication method holds considerable potential for advancing large-scale applications of copper-based inks in flexible electronics.

In this work, we combined mussel-inspired polydopamine (pDA) coating chemistry with graphene oxide (GO) and antimicrobial copper compounds (Cu(NO3)2, CuCl2, Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs), and Cu-Carbon nanofibers (Cu-CNF)) to create hydrophobic antimicrobial nanocoatings on cotton fabric. The structural, morphological, wettability, and antibacterial characteristics of the produced coatings were evaluated. The fabric coated with Cu(NO3)2 and CuNPs had good hydrophobicity, which was stabilized for 30 min following GO integration. The coated fabric with GO and CuNPs showed 100% bacterial inhibition for S. aureus and a 99.995% reduction for P. aeruginosa bacteria. Overall, this bioinspired approach to developing antimicrobial coatings on fabric utilizing Cu(NO3)2 and CuNPs with GO shows a lot of promise in preventing the transmission of bacterial and viral infections through contaminated garments and has potential in designing clothing for healthcare settings such as PPEs, gowns, aprons, face mask filters, curtains, and so on.
Silver Molybdate Nanocrystal-Reinforced High-Performance Anti-Coronavirus Composite Polymer Coating

Abstract:In response to the present epidemic situation, this work proposes an anti-coronavirus composite polymer coating with nano-Ag2MoO4 as the core component to reduce the potential safety hazards caused by excessive use of disinfectants. Nano-β-Ag2MoO4 with mixed morphology was produced with industrialized preparation technology. Among them, oval nanoparticles are core components with antiviral properties, and long rod-shaped particles are used to identify whether the stirring process meets the standard. After x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy testing, nano-β-Ag2MoO4 stored for 4 years still meets the design requirements in terms of purity, crystal phase, shape, and scale, which solves the problem of the long-term effect of core components. In the existing water-based paint production process, the mixing process and formula of nano-β-Ag2MoO4 were explored, and the large-scale production process of anti-virus water-based paint was solved. Resistance tests against the HCoV-229E coronavirus showed that the anti-coronavirus activity rate of the nano-β-Ag2MoO4 coating at a weight concentration of 200 ppm was 99.5% within 2 h, which verified the effectiveness of the composite polymer coating.
Preparation and Investigation on Copper Nanoparticles in Conductive Ink

Abstract:Using NaH2PO2·H2O as reductant,CuSO4·5H2O as precursor and adding surface-active agents and dispersing agents,such as Lomar D,PVP,nanoparticles copper conductive ink has been successfully prepared by chemical reduction and the ink in organisms(DEG)can be stable at ambient air for 60 days.And impurities in the plasma has been removed through electrodialysis and then using the method of the vacuum distillation nanocopper content(the ratio of quality)in conductive ink reaches 5%~30%,of which the electrodialysis impurity removal reaches more than 99%.After XRD,TEM,EDX,ICP and LB550 size distribution instrument are conducted to characterize the structure of the prepared nanoparticles copper conductive ink,the results show that the size of nanoparticles copper is distributed in the range of 15～40nm in diameter and the nanoparticles are spherical geometry.Orthogonal expreriment is done to analyse the factors that have an impact on the size of the copper grains in the ink and find that reducing agents and precursors of the molar ratio,temperature,pH value,decentralized agents and surfactants molar ratio of copper grains have great impact on growth.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is being used to fight off infections caused by viruses, and one of the most outstanding nanotechnological uses is the design of protective barriers made of textiles functionalized with antimicrobial agents, with the challenge of combating the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causal agent of COVID-19. This research is framed within two fundamental aspects: the first one is linked to the proposal of new methods of biogenic synthesis of silver, cuprous oxide, and zinc oxide nanoparticles using organic extracts as reducing agents. The second one is the application of nanomaterials in the impregnation (functionalization) of textiles based on methods called "in situ" (within the synthesis), and "post-synthesis" (after the synthesis), with subsequent evaluation of their effectiveness in reducing the viral load of SARS-CoV-2. The results show that stable, monodisperse nanoparticles with defined geometry can be obtained. Likewise, the "in situ" impregnation method emerges as the best way to adhere nanoparticles. The results of viral load reduction show that 'in situ' textiles with Cu 2 O NP achieved a 99.79% load reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Abstract:The design of self-sterilizing surfaces with favorable biocompatibility is acknowledged as an effective approach to deal with the bacterial infections of biomedical devices. In this study, we report an intriguing protocol for the large-scale fabrication of self-sterilizing and biocompatible surface film coatings by using polymer shielded silver nanoparticle loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT) nano-dispersions. To achieve the antibacterial coatings, the bioinspired positively charged and negatively charged AgNPs@oCNTs were alternately deposited onto substrates by spray-coating assisted layer-by-layer assembly. Then the bacterial inhibitory zones, optical density value monitoring, bacterial killing efficiency and adhesion were investigated; and all the results revealed that the AgNPs@oCNTs thin film coatings exhibited robust and long-term antibacterial activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. Moreover, due to the shielding effects of polymer layers, the coatings showed extraordinary blood compatibility and limited toxicity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells. It is believed that the proposed large-scale fabrication of bactericidal, blood and cell compatible AgNPs@oCNT based thin film coatings will have great potential to forward novel operational pathogenic inhibition strategies to avoid undesired bacterial contaminations of biomedical implants or biological devices.STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Bacterial infection of medical devices has been considered to be a world-wide clinical threat towards patients' health. In this study, a bioinspired and biocompatible antibacterial coating was prepared via the spray-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The silver nanopartilces loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT), which were coated by functional polymers (chitosan and synthetic heparin mimicking polymers), were prepared via mussel inspired chemistry; and the spray-assisted assembly process allowed the fast construction on devices. Owing to the antibacterial efficiency of the loaded AgNPs, the coating showed robust bacterial killing activity and resistance towards bacterial adhesion. Moreover, since that the AgNPs were shielded by the polymers, the coating exhibited no clear toxicity at blood or cellular level. Benefiting from the universal and large-scale fabrication advancements of the spray assisted LbL coating; it is believed that the proposed strategy can be applied in designing many other kinds of self-sterilizing biomedical implants and devices.

Abstract:Copper nanoparticles possess unique physical and chemical properties; however, their application is often restricted, owing to their tendency to oxidize. In this work, we prepared copper nanoparticles with enhanced oxidative stability via a simple and low-cost method, where a modified starch was used as an environmentally friendly reducing agent and biocompatible polyethylenimine was used as a stabilizer. The prepared copper nanoparticles could be stored in air for at least 6 months without any oxidation in a dried state. Interestingly, our synthesis could even be performed at room temperature with a longer reaction time. We used various characterization methods to study the reaction mechanism. The prepared copper nanoparticles were further uniformly doped into an agar film, and this composite showed excellent bacterial killing efficiency, owing to the antibacterial properties of the copper nanoparticles. Our composite film shows potential for various clinical applications, such as wound dressing materials.
