Abstract:Currently, many kinds of organic pollutants in air and water have a negative impact on humans and the environment. Notably, as a type of new functional materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with well-ordered porous structures and numerous active sites have been proven to be ideal photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. In the past few years, many encouraging achievements have been made in the research field of MOFs for photocatalysis. And a large number of functionalized MOFs have been constructed to improve photocatalytic activity. In this review, recent progress in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in both air and water using functionalized MOFs are summarized in detail. The focus is on photocatalytic mechanisms and some strategies employed to achieve higher degradation efficiency. Furthermore, the challenges and outlooks in this promising filed are also discussed. We hope this review would be useful for designing more functionalized MOFs with greater photocatalytic performance for the degradation of organic pollutants in the environment.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with their large surface area and numerous active sites have attracted significant research attention. Recently, the application of MOFs for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants has provided effective solutions to address diverse environmental problems. In this review, the latest progress in MOF-based removal and degradation of organic pollutants is summarized according to the different roles of MOFs in the removal reaction systems, such as physical adsorbents, enzyme-immobilization carriers, nanozymes, catalysts for photocatalysis, photo-Fenton and sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). Finally, the opportunities and challenges of developing advanced MOFs for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed and anticipated.

Abstract:Water plays a vital role in all aspects of life. Recently, water pollution has increased exponentially due to various organic and inorganic pollutants. Organic pollutants are hard to degrade; therefore, cost-effective and sustainable approaches are needed to degrade these pollutants. Organic dyes are the major source of organic pollutants from coloring industries. The photoactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an ultimate strategy for constructing photocatalysts to degrade pollutants present in wastewater. Therefore, tuning the metal ions/cluster and organic ligands for the better photocatalytic activity of MOFs is a tremendous approach for wastewater treatment. This review comprehensively reported various MOFs, and their composites, especially POM-based MOF materials, for the ultimate degradation of organic dyes in the aqueous phase. A brief discussion on MOF-based photocatalysts is explored using various theoretical approaches such as density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning (ML). Thus, this article eventually paved the way for applying different structural features to modulate novel porous materials for enhanced photodegradation properties toward organic pollutants.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive attention, relying on the characteristic of porosity, high specific surface area and modifiability. Its semiconductor characteristics make it focus in the field of photocatalysis. Based on the classification of modification methods, this article summarized the recent researches on MOFs in the field of photocatalysis, including inner confinement metal nanoparticles, semiconductor composites and MOFs derivatives. The first two modifications aim to reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes by transferring them. The latter removes the partial ligand by calcination and retain the porous structure framework of MOFs, which improve the chemical stability of MOFs. Such MOF-based photocatalysts have been used in the fields of environmental pollution control and energy sustainable development.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has been considered as one of the most attractive alternative routes to transform naturally abundant, clean, and sustainable solar energy into chemical energy. Nowadays, the most popular heterogeneous photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, has already found application for water splitting to produce hydrogen and oxygen, degradation of organic pollutants, air purification, and the creation of self‐cleaning coatings. However, TiO2 has a significant limitation, namely large band gap (3.0–3.4 eV), which makes it possible to use only ultraviolet illumination to initiate photocatalytic processes. With a view to efficient solar‐energy utilization, the development of new photocatalysts, which are sensitive to visible light, is an important direction in the theory and practice of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this regard, the use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is an attractive route because they have emerged as an interesting class of materials for applications in photoreactions due to their flexible tunability in composition, structure and functional properties, facilitated adsorption towards chemicals, and efficient light absorption. Moreover, they can be composed with other semiconductors in order to produce heterojunctions (e.g., type‐II, Z‐scheme, and S‐scheme), which effectiveness in photogenerated charge separation has already been proven by many examples. The present critical review reports progress over the last 5 years in the preparation and activity of metal‐organic framework‐based heterojunction photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Two eternal topics, sustainable energy and green environment drive the research of solar energy conversion and utilization to the forefront of science and technology. Herein, the hottest photocatalysts—metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites are highly focused on, and the comprehensive architecture strategies are extracted with a well-organized review of their infinite possibility in photocatalytic properties and performance. Further, the architecture strategies based on the track of photoelectrons during the photocatalytic process and the most key mention of the structure–function relationship are revealed with profundity perspective and easy-to-understand approach. So that, the great potential in pollutants degradation, water splitting for H2 generation, and CO2 reduction is successfully reviewed to promote the design of high-efficiency photocatalysts in the future. Finally, a systematic overview is made on the problems and challenges of MOF-based photocatalysts, and future development is prospected to point out the opportunities and directions.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, which can be utilized for H2 production, CO2 reduction, and water remediation, promising a bright future in addressing energy and environmental challenges. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with highly uniform crystal structures provide internal conditions to restrain the aggregation of metal species and generate the composite with superb stability. Such confinement strategy offers advantages in designing of photocatalysts with abundant active sites, increased mass-transfer efficiency, enhanced light adsorption and high photo-generated carriers utilization rate due to the synergistic effects. Here, the recent advances in fabricating metal species confined in pores of MOFs are concluded. Advanced characterizations for characterizing the relative location between metal species and MOFs are displayed. Moreover, the photocatalytic applications of metal in energy and environment and the corresponding photocatalytic mechanisms are discussed. Challenges and perspectives are given, with good hope to promote the development of fabricating advanced and efficient photocatalyst.

Abstract:With their outstanding diversities in both structures and performances, newly emerging metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are considered to be the most promising artificial catalysts to meet multiple challenges in the fields of energy and environment. Especially in absorption and conversion of solar energy, a variety of MOFs can be readily designed to cover and harvest the sun irradiation of ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared region through tuning both organic linkers and metal nodes to create optimal photocatalytic efficiency. Nowadays, a variety of MOFs were successfully synthesized as powerful photocatalysts for important redox reactions such as water-splitting, CO 2 reduction and aqueous environmental pollutants detoxification. MOFs applications in indoor-air VOCs pollutants cleaning, however, are less concerned partially because of limited diffusion of both gaseous pollutant molecules and photo-induced active species in very porous MOFs structures. In this mini-review, we focus on the major breakthroughs of MOFs as photocatalysts for the effective removal of indoor-air VOCs such as aldehydes, aromatics and short-chain alcohols. According to their nature of photoactive centers, herein MOFs photocatalysts are divided into two categories to comment, that is, MOFs with variable valence metal nodes as direct photoactive centers and MOFs with non-variable valence metal nodes but after combining other photoactive variable valence metal centers as excellent concentrated and concerted electron-transfer materials. The mechanisms and current challenges of the photocatalytic degradation of indoor-air VOC pollutants by these MOFs will be discussed as deeply as possible.

Abstract:To resolve the issues of environmental pollution and seek for sustainable clean fuels, many photocatalytic systems based on metal compounds and amorphous polymers have been studied over the past few years. However, applications of these photocatalytic systems were limited due to intrinsic drawbacks of the structures, which make the exploitation of new class of materials necessary. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) comprised of light elements, have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent physiochemical properties. Specially, high crystallinity, good stability, intrinsic porosity and unique covalent linkages make COFs suitable for the application under harsh photocatalytic conditions. Predesigned structure of COFs provides a good platform for constructing diverse photocatalytic systems. Up to now, though the research on COFs and COFs-based photocatalysts is still in its infancy, great progress has been made especially in the H2 or O2 evolution, CO2 reduction, photocatalytic organic transformations, and elimination of organic pollutants. In this review, we focus on the developments in COFs-based photocatalytic materials and analyze the relationship between the predesigned COFs structures and their photocatalytic properties. Moreover, we elaborate the strategies for enhancing catalytic activities of COFs-based photocatalysts. Finally, the perspectives on new opportunities and challenges in the field are discussed.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers. In recent years, COFs have received extensive attention in the field of photocatalytic degradation due to their large specific surface area, good thermal and solvent stability, and diverse structures. This review studies the progress of COF in the field of photocatalytic degradation, and summarizes the strategies to improve the photocatalytic activity of covalent organic frameworks, including the designs of ligands and structures. In particular, the design and construction of the COF composites (COF/MOF, COF/g-C3N4, COF/metal semiconductor) are discussed. The photocatalytic mechanism is described in detail, and the prospect of COFs in photocatalytic degradation is prospected.

Abstract:The environmental pollution is still one of the most serious problems facing mankind today, it is of great significance to develop novel wastewater treatment processes. Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising techniques for wastewater treatment. Lately, there is a strong increase in the number of reports on the synthesis and applications of MOF-based photocatalysts. In this review, the typical modification strategies of MOFs for improving photocatalytic activities are summarized, such as optimization of preparation method, surface modification, doping metal ions, loading quantum dots as well as constructing the heterojunction. The main purposes of these modification strategies are to broaden the light absorption range of MOFs and increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Advantages and disadvantages of each modification strategy are also analyzed. Meanwhile, the applications of MOFs-based photocatalyst in wastewater treatment are briefly discussed, including reduction of metal ions, degradation of organic pollutants and inactivation of bacteria. More importantly, the challenges and outlooks about MOFs-based photocatalyst are proposed. In short, it is hoped that this review can provide some meaningful references for designing MOFs-based photocatalyst in future research.

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction to hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly and sustainable method, yet the efficient production of hydrogen peroxide tremendously depends on the light absorption and electron transfer properties of semiconductor photocatalysts. Metal–organic frameworks possess fascinating merits such as large surface area, excellent chemical stability, and tunable chemical components, which make them promising candidates for hydrogen peroxide production in various photocatalytic systems. The present review not only comprehensively elucidates the production process of hydrogen peroxide, encompassing the photocatalytic mechanism, detection method of the product, and performance evaluation, but also categorizes and summarizes the modification strategy of metal–organic frameworks in the realm of photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production based on recent progress. Additionally, accurate fabrication strategies are given in detail to meet the development trends of metal–organic frameworks photocatalysts, incorporating the challenges faced.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have sparked a wave of research in the field of photocatalysis due to their ultra-high specific surface area, porous sparse structure, and tunable topology and composition brought about by numerous metal centers/organic ligands. In this paper, we first summarise and refine the basic design strategies of MOFs as photocatalysts and their modification strategies in enhancing photocatalytic performance from the perspective of heterogeneous photocatalysts. Subsequently, we review the recent research progress on the specific applications of MOFs in heterogeneous photocatalysis, i.e. photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants, photocatalytic water separation and photocatalytic reduction of CO2, including the selection of design strategies and modification strategies for MOFs-based photocatalysts, photocatalytic mechanisms and parameters affecting photocatalytic performance. In addition, this paper highlights the mechanistic studies of MOFs-based heterogeneous photocatalysts from different perspectives according to their specific applications, and compares and refines photocatalytic mechanistic studies in different fields through different techniques such as in situ characterization and DFT, as well as the commonalities and connections between different mechanistic studies. Finally, the disadvantages and advantages of heterogeneous photocatalysts based on MOFs are discussed, as well as possible ending directions for existing problems and possible key research directions for the future.

Abstract:The heavy metal contamination of water systems has become a major environmental concern worldwide. Photocatalysis using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising approach for heavy metal remediation, owing to the ability of MOFs to fully degrade contaminants through redox reactions that are driven by photogenerated charge carriers. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent developments in MOF-based photocatalysts for removing and decontaminating heavy metals from water. The tunable nature of MOFs allows the rational design of composition and features to enhance light harvesting, charge separation, pollutant absorptivity, and photocatalytic activities. Key strategies employed include metal coordination tuning, organic ligand functionalization, heteroatom doping, plasmonic nanoparticle incorporation, defect engineering, and morphology control. The mechanisms involved in the interactions between MOF photocatalysts and heavy metal contaminants are discussed, including light absorption, charge carrier separation, metal ion adsorption, and photocatalytic redox reactions. The review highlights diverse applications of MOF photocatalysts in treating heavy metals such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, silver, arsenic, nickel, etc. in water remediation. Kinetic modeling provides vital insights into the complex interplay between coupled processes such as adsorption and photocatalytic degradation that influence treatment efficiency. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is also crucial for evaluating the sustainability of MOF-based technologies. By elucidating the latest advances, current challenges, and future opportunities, this review provides insights into the potential of MOF-based photocatalysts as a sustainable technology for addressing the critical issue of heavy metal pollution in water systems. Ongoing efforts are needed to address the issues of stability, recyclability, scalable synthesis, and practical reactor engineering.
