Mythology and Symbol——A Case Study on Dongba Mythology

Abstract:Symbol is a basic characteristic of mythological art.The symbol in Dongba mythology is one with certain systematic nature.The symbolic system constructed by reproduction worship is abundant and complete.In Dongba mythology,the mode of the universal origin is con-struc-ted by human's sexual behavior.The holy sea symbolizes the female's embryo;the holy mountain the penis;the holy tortoise the vulvae;the holy tree the vigorous fertility;the direct sight the beastliness;the implicative sight the humanity.The white color is connected with the goodness,the beautifulness,the genuineness,the trueness,and the auspiciousness,while the black color with the badness,the ugliness,the emptiness,the fakeness,and the distressfulness.
