Abstract:This study focuses on the transformation of the symbolic system of ancient Chinese time culture in East Asian folklore. Based on the research methodology of "variant" literature proposed by Yan Shaodang in advocacy of the "China School" in comparative literature, this study examines the metamorphosis and variation of Yin and Yang(Qian and Kun), the Five Phases(Earth and Metal), the Eight Trigrams(Li Hexagram) which were regarded as time symbols in ancient East Asia, respectively through comparative studies on "Whipping the Spring Cattle" in ancient China and the "White Horse Watching" ritual in ancient Japan, the legends of Kitchen and Toilet gods in China and Japan, and folk religion of the Kitchen God in China, Japan, Ryukyu Kingdom, and Vietnam. In doing so, this study argues that the "variant" methodology proposed by Yan Shaodang is applicable to the comparative study of East Asian folklore. In particular, the foundation of the above transformation and variation is exactly found in the cultural elements with cognitive commonness existing in East Asian time culture.
