Abstract:Earthquake and seismic-resistant concrete structures are essential components and requirements of structural design. The performance and response of concrete structures during/after the earthquake event are significant to determine the condition of the structures as well as to identify the possibility of structural failure. The main objective is to investigate the appropriate method to evaluate the impact on the structure due to earthquakes based on closed-form solutions, and to determine its differences with the results of numerical modelling. The seismic behavior of structures is required to be designed in accordance with the minimum design requirements specified in the Standard. Seismic design, where ground behavior is considered, is presented as a significant part of design analyses, and ground movement and shaking, are associated with the ground deformation which is the primary seismic load consideration for the design of plain or reinforced concrete structures. The outcome of the longitudinal analysis provided the maximum axial and bending strain which is adopted to calculate the combined strain. These results of strain are considered with the design of concrete structures against Ultimate Limit State and Service Limit State design phases. Therefore, the results evaluate the effect of seismic design on the performance of the concrete structure.
Post-Earthquake Fire Resistance and Residual Seismic Capacity of Reinforced Concrete Columns

Abstract:A series of experiments on 14 square cantilevered columns under constant axial load was conducted to investigate the fire resistance time and residual seismic capacity of reinforced concrete columns subjected to a post-earthquake fire. All specimens were first subjected to a reversed cyclic loading or a simulated earthquake loading, and then exposed to a simulated fire endurance test (wherein high temperature representative of fire loading was imposed on the specimens), or they were subjected to cyclic reversed loading following a post-earthquake fire. The experimental results indicate that the tested specimens satisfied the fire protection requirements of ISO 834 and the Chinese Design Code after moderate earthquake damage, represented in this study by reversed cyclic loading up to a peak drift of 2% and simulated seismic displacement history with a peak drift of 3.5%. Residual drift had a more significant impact than the maximum lateral drift for post-earthquake fire resistance. The seismic response of columns subjected to post-earthquake fire exhibited reduced lateral load capacity, effective stiffness, and ductility. Results from the present study indicate that the lateral drift should be monitored during a fire test, and that lateral drift limits be incorporated into the criteria for post-earthquake fire loading.

Abstract:An experimental study was conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior and residual capacity of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns subjected to a post-earthquake fire. Nine circular cantilever CFST columns, including two control specimens, were tested to investigate their post-earthquake fire resistance time. The residual seismic behavior and load carrying capacity of an additional four columns were also studied following post-earthquake fire. All specimens were first subjected to a reversed cyclic or simulated earthquake loading (to induce initial seismic damage) and were then heated to obtain the fire resistance time or were subjected to additional cyclic reversed loading after a post-earthquake fire. The experimental results indicate that the CFST columns generally performed well after a post-earthquake fire. Specimens with high compressive strength concrete exhibited longer post-earthquake fire resistance times, whereas the increase in tube wall thickness only had a marginal effect on improving post-earthquake fire resistance. More importantly, the presence of residual lateral drift at the end of the earthquake loading had a much more significant effect on the post-earthquake fire performance than specimens without residual deformation. Finally, it is recommended that the failure criterion for fire loading should possibly take into consideration lateral deformation limits during fire testing. Abstract:Earthquakes, as one of the primary natural disasters, cause significant destruction to building structures. Historically, the collapse of buildings due to earthquakes has resulted in numerous casualties and economic losses. This paper, through a method of literature review, explores the mechanisms of damage to concrete structures under the action of an earthquake and presents the principles of earthquake-resistant design. It analyzes how factors such as the mechanical properties of structural materials, the form of the structure, the strength of connection nodes, and the conditions of the foundation affect structural damage. It proposes measures to enhance the seismic performance of concrete structures through ductility design, strength design, uniform design, and the strategy of multiple lines of defense. This study holds significant implications for the construction industry by offering a systematic set of earthquake-resistant design principles and strategies which can enhance the seismic resilience of existing and future structures, mitigating the damage caused by earthquakes. Moreover, for society at large, this research underscores the importance of reducing seismic disaster risks through scientific design, contributing to the protection of people's lives and property, and promoting sustainable societal development.

Abstract:Earthquake is one of the most serious natural disasters that people encounter today. Strong earthquake can produce huge energy and cause serious damage to buildings on the ground. After seismic design of civil engineering buildings, the stability of structural performance is increased and the loss rate is reduced. As the most sensitive component of seismic design, the seismic design of concrete structure is essential. Nowadays, seismic design has become an important part of civil engineering building design. Improving the seismic strength is related to the service life and structural performance of the whole building, so as to ensure the safety of people’s life and property. The seismic design of buildings is very important, which can enhance the stability of concrete structure to resist the huge energy brought by earthquake. This paper first introduces the importance of seismic design in concrete structure, puts forward the basic requirements of seismic design, and points out several factors affecting the performance of seismic structure, and finally, it analyzes the measures to improve the seismic strength.

Earth pressure on supporting structures of asymmetric excavations considering their displacement

Abstract:The reason of earth pressure alteration is analyzed, and the formula for calculating the earth pressure considering the displacement of structures of asymmetric excavations are put forward. The earth pressure is calculated, compared and analyzed according to the monitoring data. They are almost equal. At the same time, the earth pressure of asymmetric excavations is the comprehensive result of soil displacement around them. The soil displacement is almost equal to the deformation of structure and earth pressure is less than the internal force of supporting structures. A formula for earth pressure considering water pressure and asymmetric displacement is concluded. It is concluded that the earth pressure for dewatering gets less and it benefits to the stability of excavations, and vice versa during raining. The earth pressure is nearly equal to the force of lining. It may be useful for the design of similar projects.

Abstract:The aseismic capacity of engineering structures is the first line in the earthquake defense system of the society.Building collapse is one of the major earthquake devastating consequences.Damages of buildings generally reflect the degree of earthquake disaster.As a result,the aseismic capacity of building structures,especially their capacity to prevent collapse,is of great importance to the overall earthquake defense system of the society.Based on analyzing the building seismic damage in the Wenchuan earthquake,methods to increase the overall aseismic capacity of building structures are discussed in the framework of system theory.Some key problems and suggestions for seismic design,especially for increasing the capacity to prevent collapse of building structures are proposed.It is shown that: the safety margin of building structural systems can be divided into 3 levels: fundamental,integral and unexpected safety margins.The overall seismic capacity and collapse prevention of building structures are mainly determined by the integral safety margin and unexpected safety margin.Lack of unexpected safety margin is the main reasons of the severe building damage in the Wenchuan earthquake.The unexpected safety margin of a structural system mainly comes from its robustness,stability and integrity.Research on the integral and unexpected safety margins of building structures is still limited.Corresponding requirements and specifications in current design code for building structures need to be improved.

Abstract:Aging reinforced concrete (RC) building structures typically experience more severe damage and are prone to collapse during earthquakes, constituting a primary factor in casualties and direct economic losses. To enhance the seismic performance of these old structures, this paper proposes a seismic risk assessment and a micro-concrete restoration method. It applies the process to an existing three-story reinforced concrete structure. A practical framework for mitigating structural vulnerabilities in seismic-prone regions was proposed. Then an as-built survey was conducted to create as-built architectural and structural drawings. Concrete core tests, ferroscans, and rebar tests were also performed. Based on field surveys and test data, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses have been used to evaluate structural safety. Concrete column jacketing was used to strengthen weak existing columns with micro-concrete. In assessing the structural response of retrofitted buildings, a comparison was made to their initial state. The comparison shows that applying concrete column jacketing with micro concrete can reduce other structural elements' demand capacity ratio (DCR), minimize maximum displacements, and enhance overall stiffness. The results indicate that the proposed method effectively evaluates the seismic risk of aging structures and enhances seismic resilience in existing buildings. Abstract:Self-centering (SC) precast concrete wall structures have been developed as an earthquake resilient structural system characterized by low structural damage and controllable residual drift. Despite the superior structural performance, harmonizing to seismic performance between structural and non-structural components is expected to be considered for further comprehensive performance assessment. This paper extensively evaluates the seismic demands of structural and non-structural components, especially for those sensitive to accelerations in SC precast concrete wall structures. Factors considered include building heights, earthquake ground motion types and intensities, energy dissipation, as well as base rocking, and impact against the foundation. The seismic demands of SC precast concrete walls are firstly compared with conventional reinforced concrete (RC) walls by nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA) in terms of displacement and acceleration responses. Then, attention is focused on investigating the dominant factors for the seismic demands of acceleration-sensitive non-structural components in SC precast wall structures through floor response spectrum analysis and parametric analyses. The results confirm that the SC precast walls exhibit excellent lateral response, especially with limited residual drifts. However, for the floor acceleration response, which is highly related to the demands of non-structural components, the results show that higher modes have a critical influence on SC precast wall structures. It also indicates that the floor acceleration response of SC precast wall structures is strongly influenced by the location of the story levels but not strongly influenced by the base rocking impact and energy dissipation capability.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of rapid socio-economic development in our country and the accelerated pace of urbanization, the construction industry has been provided with a vast space for vigorous development. With the increasing demands for building quality, the design of civil engineering structures faces higher challenges and standards. Designers, in the design process, must not only pursue the aesthetic effect of buildings but also pay more attention to the safety of structures. Seismic design has received widespread attention in today's society, as its effectiveness is directly related to the stability and durability of building structures, which in turn affects the personal safety of building users. Therefore, in the design process of civil engineering structures, designers must establish advanced seismic design concepts, making seismic performance one of the core elements of design. To achieve this goal, designers need to scientifically and reasonably determine the seismic grade of buildings by combining multiple factors such as the geological conditions of the project location, history of seismic activity, and building usage. Meanwhile, advanced seismic technologies and materials need to be adopted to ensure that building structures can effectively absorb and disperse seismic energy during earthquakes, thereby maximally protecting the safety of buildings and their users.

Abstract:In this paper,the behavior of some geosynthetic-reinforced soil walls in 1994 Northridge earthquake(USA),1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu(Kobe) Earthquake(Japan),1999 Chi-chi Earthquake(Taiwan),1999 Kocaeli Earthquake(Turkey),2001 El Salvador Earthquake(Central America),2004 Niigataken-Chuetsu Earthquake(Japan),2008 Wenchun tarthguake in China is introduced.EPS(expanded poly-styrol) embankments were built in road widen project and backside of abutments for bridges,and its seismic stability is confirmed.It is concluded from survey results that geosynthetics have excellent anti-seismic property,because of its light weight,high strength and excellent pliability and toughness.

Abstract:Advances in Structural Engineering, Ahead of Print. In order to further demonstrate the effectiveness of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) in repairing and strengthening the post-earthquake damaged structure, at the overall structural level, experimental and numerical comparative analysis of structural seismic performance before and after "retrofitted with ECC" is conducted in this paper. A 1:2-scale reinforced concrete frame is tested under cyclic reversed loading and a new ECC material's constitutive model is proposed in this paper for improving the accuracy and feasibility of numerical modelling. The modelling method and newly proposed constitutive model of ECC has been demonstrated to be workable and accurate. Based on numerical and experimental data, the increase of the average yielding displacement after the installation of ECC is relatively significant (80.4% to 156.4%), and the repairing method using ECC in post-earthquake damaged RC frame can restore and even exceed the original frame's load bearing capacity. Comparing the ultimate inter-story drift ratio, the ratio with ECC is about 31.0% higher, indicating that ECC has good deformation capacity and the usage of ECC is indeed an effective method to improve deformation capacity in repairing and strengthening post-earthquake damaged structures. The results confirm the effectiveness and superiority of retrofitting ECC in post-earthquake damaged structures for the reason that the repaired structure can reach the same level of seismic performance as the original structure. The "repairable" characteristic can be used in the design of earthquake resilient structures.

Finally, the effectiveness of the seismic shock absorption technology is verified by using the passive control method as an example.

Abstract:More and more concrete structures characterized by abrupt change in stiffness are built because of requirements of building appearance and functions. Obviously, dynamic properties and seismic response of this kind of structure are very different from common structures. It is very interesting to discuss the design concept, analysis methods and other details of this kind of structure. Dynamic properties and seismic response of concrete structure characterized by abrupt change in horizontal connection stiffness are studied systematically in this paper. General mechanic concepts and analysis methods of this kind of structure are introduced firstly. Then for Putian Center of Radio, Film and TV example, complicated mode shapes and stress concentration resulted from abrupt change in horizontal connection stiffness are revealed. Moreover, effects of different connective plans located in place of abrupt change in horizontal connection stiffness on structure dynamic properties and seismic response are discussed. These effects are analyzed by FE numerical experiments. Finally, some useful suggestions are proposed which may be used as a reference in engineering.

Abstract:This paper provides a practical design method for hybrid unbonded post-tensioned precast concrete joints. Such joints featured with self-centering capacities have been widely favored in recent years. However, the absence of design methods hinders their further promotion. To solve the issue, two methods for calculating mechanical behavior of the joints were first studied: characteristic points method and iterative method. The effectiveness of the methods was verified by the existing test results. On this basis, a joint design method considering both yield bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity was proposed. Moreover, to facilitate design, some factors affecting the bearing capacity were discussed. A five-story frame structure was designed by the proposed design method, and the influence of two design factors on structural response was analyzed by utilizing nonlinear time-history method. The analysis results show that: with the increase of energy dissipation factor α s , the post-earthquake residual deformation of the structure tends to increase linearly, while the accumulated damage of the structure will decrease continuously; both overdesign and underdesign of bearing capacity of the joint are unfavorable; and near-field earthquake may cause irreparable damage to structural columns, making the residual deformation of structures contrary to the self-centering capacity of joints, which shall be considered during engineering design.

Abstract:Severe earthquakes continue to cause major catastrophes. Many devices in active, hybrid, and semi-active structural control systems which are used as controllable force devices are costly to build and maintain. The passive control reinforced concrete frame (PCRCF) reinforced with high strength steel only in the columns presented here provides structural systems more resistance to lateral earthquake loadings at comparatively lower cost. The effectiveness is demonstrated by a nonlinear static analysis using fiber model for a single story single bay frame. The study shows that the use of high performance steel in columns prevents formation of plastic hinges at the critical column base sections and failures are always initiated by reinforcement yielding at the beam ends. Furthermore, after experiencing severe lateral drift, the passive control design has small residual displacements compared to ordinary reinforced concrete frames. PCRCF rehabilitation and strengthening can be achieved more easily as compared with ordinary reinforced concrete frame.

Abstract:Precast concrete systems, which are the result of industrialization in the field of construction, are faced with the prejudice of insufficient earthquake resistance despite their many advantages and their use is limited in Turkey. These systems, which have proven earthquake resistance if they are designed properly, can be used safely in low-rise or multi-storey buildings with different functions in earthquake zones. The aim of this study is to determine the architectural design requirements of earthquake-resistant precast concrete structures and to reveal the structural system design approaches. In accordance with this aim, the earthquake effect on the structures was summarized and architectural design principles that would contribute to the earthquake resistance of precast concrete structures were determined firstly. Then, earthquake-resistant structural system design approaches of frame, panel, and cell construction were evaluated separately.

Abstract:Earthquakes are often followed by higher-intensity aftershocks, which tend to aggravate the accumulated and more severe damage to building structures. The seismic vulnerability of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structures under major aftershocks is more complex. In this paper, a CFST frame and a frame with buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) are studied, and the finite element analysis software Midas 2022 is used to analyze the seismic vulnerability of the two types of structures under main shock and main–aftershock. The results show that the structural vulnerability of the two structures is significantly higher under the main–aftershock sequences than under the main shock alone. Compared with the CFST structure, the structure with BRBs can effectively reduce the structural displacement and the hysteretic energy, decrease the plastic deformation risk of the structural components, and improve the seismic performance. The structure with BRBs can significantly reduce the probability of structural collapse under the main–aftershock sequence and can provide a reliable guarantee of the stability of the building.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to promote the application of high-strength reinforcement and recycled aggregate concrete in post-earthquake repairable precast structures. Three large-scale recycled concrete columns with ultra-high-strength steel bar were designed and tested under quasi-static cyclic loads. The feasibility of semi-precast columns is verified, i.e., the concrete shell of the outer tube is precast first, and then the precast external shell is used as a formwork to cast concrete into the tube. The design parameters include axial load and the addition of steel fibers. The results indicate that all specimens exhibited a good deformation capacity with an ultimate drift ratio greater than 4%. Increasing axial load will increase the lateral load capacity of the specimen by 21%, while the deformability and repairability decrease. Adding steel fibers to the precast external shell can increase the lateral load capacity by 10%, as well as the deformability and repairability of the specimen. Due to the low bond strength of ultra-high-strength steel bar, it slips at the column footing in the tensile side. Eventually, the fiber-based model simplified flexural capacity calculation model considering the ultra-high-strength steel bar slippage in the tensile zone are established.

Abstract:The article presents the main principles of a new approach to the calculation of reinforced concrete structures. A new chart-energy method for the calculation is developed with an additional stress–strain state stage. It helps to solve the problem of a stochastic crack. The absence of transition from a state of continuity to the state of “section with a crack” does not allow to make uniform the calculation of strength, stiffness, and fracture toughness. According to the energy theory of reinforced concrete resistance at the time of crack formation stretched concrete energy redistributes to armature, which acts as a brake element and restrains crack propagation in the cross section. The sudden nature of a crack appearance is accompanied by an instantaneous change of cross-section stress state. The change is dynamic in nature. The problem of a reinforced concrete section transition from “solid” state to state “with a crack” in a stretched zone and determining the depth of cracks was solved. The proposed approach allows to create a uniform methodology for calculating strength, stiffness, and fracture toughness, as well as offer a number of constructive measures to improve the earthquake resistance of buildings and structures. A series of experiments was conducted in relation to key provisions of the energy theory of reinforced concrete resistance. The proposed variant of a seismic load damper will significantly dissipate the earthquake energy and protect the structural system from damage. The use of internal clamps in vertical elements significantly increases a resistance to shear, while enhancing the junction of column and slab.
