Abstract:Among energetic materials, there is a significant challenge facing researchers to seek an optimal balance between high performance and safety. By combination of furoxan and 1,2,4- oxadiazole backbones and C-NO2 moieties, a promising energetic molecule, bis(4-nitro-1,2,5-oxadiazole-2-oxid-3-yl)-azo-1,2,4-oxadiazole (6) was prepared and characterized by IR, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, DSC measurement and single crystal X-ray diffraction. It has a high density (1.92 g cm-3), acceptable thermal stability (182 °C) and high heat of formation (1188.8 kJ mol-1/ 2.8 kJ g-1). The calculated detonation performance (D = 9666 m s-1, P = 42.8 GPa) is comparable to that of CL-20 (9706 m s-1, 45.2 GPa). More importantly, it shows desirable impact and friction sensitivity (IS: 12 J, FS: 180 N), which is less sensitivie than HMX (IS: 7.4 J, FS: 120 N). Furthermore, a detonation test of compound 6 was conducted. The results indicate that compound 6 is more powerful than the commonly used secondary explosive RDX (D = 8795 m s-1, P = 34.9 GPa). The combination of advanced performances and desirable safety make this substance a potential secondary explosive.

Abstract:The first example of [5,6,5]-tricyclic bistetrazole-fused energetic materials has been obtained through a one-step reaction from commercial and inexpensive 4,6-dichloro-5-nitropyrimidine. This one-step reaction including nucleophilic substitution, nucleophilic addition, cyclization, and electron transfer is rarely reported, and the reaction mechanism and scope is well investigated. Among target compounds, organic salts exhibit higher detonation velocities (D: 8898-9077 m s-1) and lower sensitivities (IS: 16-20 J) than traditional high energy explosive RDX (D = 8795 m s-1; IS = 7.5 J). In addition, the potassium salt of 5-azido-10-nitro-bis(tetrazolo)[1,5-c:5',1'-f]pyrimidin (DTAT-K) possesses excellent priming ability, comparable to traditional primary explosive Pb(N3)2, and ultralow minimum primary charge (MPC = 10 mg), which is the lowest MPC among the reported potassium-based primary explosives. The simple synthesis route, free of heavy metal and expensive raw materials, makes it promising to quickly realize this material in large-scale industrial production as a green primary explosive. This work accelerates the upgrade of green primary explosives and enriches future prospects for the design of energetic materials.
Synthesis of a novel DOPO‐based polyphosphoramide with high char yield and its application in flame‐retardant epoxy resins

Abstract:Highlights • Combine dinitrobenzene ring and 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring to synthesis novel melt-cast explosives successfully. All compounds were well characterized by EA, IR, and NMR. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis further confirmed the structure of 2 and 3. • Proposes a strategy for designing new melt-cast explosives that is introduce the flexible group to the low melting point ring. • Both of new compounds have excellent detonation properties and sensitivity than TNT and DNAN and some previous work. Melt-cast explosives are the most widely used energetic materials in military composite explosives, researchers have been unremittingly exploring high-energy and insensitive melt-cast explosives. In this work, a series of dinitrophenyl-oxadiazole compounds were designed and prepared. These compounds have an ideal low melting point (80–97 °C), good detonation performance (detonation velocity D = 6455–6971 m/s, detonation pressure P = 18–19 GPa) and extreme insensitive nature (impact sensitivity ≥60 J, friction sensitivity >360 N). All these compounds were well characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Compounds 2 , 3 were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. As a result, their overall properties are superior to traditional melt-cast explosives trinitrotoluene (TNT) and dinitroanisole (DNAN) which may have excellent potential applications in insensitive melt-cast explosives. Abstract:Four flame retardant DOPO derivatives were succesfully synthesized by Pudovik reaction, including 6,6'-(([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diylbis(azanediyl))bis (thiophen-2-ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5a, 6,6'-(((sulfonylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(azanediyl)) bis(thiophen-2-ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5b, 6,6'-((1,4-phenylenebis(azanediyl))bis(furan-2ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5c and 6,6'-((oxybis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5d. Among them, flame retardants 5a and 5d were synthesized for the first time. DOPO derivatives were combined with functionalized ammonium polyphosphate using polyethyleneimine (PEI-APP) as flame retardant systems for epoxy composites. The combination of compound 5a and PEI-APP gave the materials with the best flame retardancy. 6wt% of PEI-APP/6% of 5a promoted the composite material to V-0 rating in UL-94 vertical burning test and the limiting oxygen index reached 28.9%. The impact of flame retardants towards the mechanical and physical properties of epoxy resin was also evaluated. The combination of 5a with PEI-APP showed the least decrease in mechanical strength of epoxy composite.

Abstract:A highly efficient flame retardant TFD was synthesized based on 2-thenaldehyde, furfurylamine and DOPO. When 4% of TFD is incorporated into EP, EP/TFD-4 exhibits 38.9 % of LOI value and UL-94 V-0 rating. In cone calorimeter test, the peak of heat release rate, total heat release, total smoke production are dropped by 20%, 9% and 65% respectively, and the char residue is increased by 67% as compared with the pure EP. The P/N/S elements in TFD play important roles both in gas phase and condensed phase. The decomposition of 2-thenaldehyde and furfurylamine moieties produces NH 3 , H 2 S, H 2 O, etc., which partly leak and dilute flammable gases, but majorly participate into structural reorganization in the char layer. The degradation of DOPO group releases phosphorus-containing free radicals and phosphate-like compounds. The former quenches the chain combustion reaction, and the later promotes the formation of a stable carbon layer as a barrier effect. Benefited from the good compatability between TFD and EP, and the fine balance between the increased rigidity and the declined cross-linking density, the EP/TFDs exhibit the strikingly similar transmittance to pure EP in the range of 200–800 nm, and the improved mechanical performance in tensile, flexural, and impact tests.

Abstract:To enhance the fire safety of epoxy resins (EP) without affecting other properties, a novel organophosphorus compound named DDPPM has been synthesized and used as co-curing agent to obtain inherent flame-retardant EP. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) proven the successful synthesis of DDPPM. The mechanical results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of the epoxy resin did not deteriorate after adding DDPPM, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shown that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of EP/DDPPM was maintained. Importantly, the EP/DDPPM presented satisfying flame-retardant efficiency in limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning tests. Incorporating 2 wt% DDPPM, the EP achieved the UL 94 V-0 rating and the LOI value was 31%. Meanwhile, the cone calorimeter (CC) test verified that DDPPM contributed to the reduction of heat and smoke release accompanied by increasing char yield. The thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR), pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and char analysis certified the flame inhibition and charring effect of DDPPM in EP.

Abstract:4H,8H-Difurazano[3,4-b:3′,4′-e]pyrazine (DFP) is an important heat-resistant explosive intermediate, but its current synthesis process is still not scalable due to the low yields and acidic smokes in an internal chlorination step to give the intermediate DHFP. In this work, a DMA-promoted chlorination method to synthesize 5,6-dichlorofurazano[3,4-b]pyrazine is described to solve the bottleneck of DFP synthesis. The best reaction conditions were confirmed to be DMA, DHFP, and POCl3 (2:1:40) at 120 °C for 3 h, with an increased yield of 62%. This new method not only increases the yield but also eliminates the acid smokes during postprocessing, and it is likely to find practical applications in the synthesis of DFP and other heat-resistant explosives.

Abstract:Energetic metal organic frameworks (EMOFs) are increasingly developed and have proven to be candidates for novel high energy density materials (HEDM). Here, two energetic metal complexes based on 3,5-diaminopyrazolone-4-oxime (DAPO) ligands were synthesized by simple steps and fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and DSC-TG. The detonation performance was calculated using the Kamlet–Jacobs formula. The crystal densities of these complexes (C 6 H 14 N 12 O 10 Co ( 2 ) and C 6 H 14 N 12 O 10 Cd ( 3 ) are as high as 1.945 g cm −3 at 163 K and 2.072 g cm −3 at 298 K, respectively. Thermal analysis by the DSC-TG test shows that they all have good thermal stability with the highest decomposition temperatures of 287 °C and 344 °C, respectively. These two as-synthesized complexes exhibit excellent detonation performance; 2 ( D = 8682 m s −1 , P = 34.98 GPa) and 3 ( D = 8383 m s −1 , P = 33.78 GPa) have good detonation velocity and detonation pressure that are superior to those of TNT, which is widely used today. Thus, they show great promise for potential applications as thermally stable energetic materials.

Abstract:Energetic polymeric binders are widely used in industrial and military fields. Meanwhile, fluorinated components in polymeric binders can facilitate the combustion of metallic fuels, energetic polymers are usually preferred for their high energetic content. Therefore, a combination of these two in one polymer binder is expected to be an excellent candidate for high-performance energetic composites. In the current report, a series of energetic and fluorinated polyurethanes (FPUs) based on glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and fluorinated chain extenders were prepared by a one-pot facile strategy. More significantly, compared with the energetic polyurethane without fluorine, FPUs not only showed a remarkably improved the mechanical properties, but also, surprisingly, an enhancement in the heat of explosion, despite the low content of fluorine.

Abstract:Three bis-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-phosphonamidates were successfully synthesized and well characterized. The influence of these DOPO-phosphonamidates on fire performance of epoxy resin was comparatively investigated. UL-94 tests results of various EP formulations indicated that DOPO-phosphonamidates exhibited superior fire performance. The EP composite containing extremely low loading of PiP-DOPO (0.5 wt% P) may pass the UL-94 V-0 rating, while EDA-DOPO and DDM-DOPO made the EP pass the V-1 rating. Thermal degradation results of the DOPO-phosphonamidate indicated the higher thermal stability with the initial degradation temperature over 340 °C under nitrogen. Moreover, only a very small residue was observed at 800 °C for DOPO-phosphonamidates and all EP formulations under air and nitrogen, indicating the limited condensed phase interaction. DDM-DOPO with richer aromatic structures presented the highest thermal stability and left more char residues. Large amount of gas products during the combustion of PiP-DOPO rapidly released in a short time, promoting flame inhibition, which may explain its superior flame retardant efficacy among all the DOPO-phosphonamidates investigated in this study.

Abstract:Despite remarkable advances in developing flame retardants and smoke suppressants for epoxy resin (EP), engineering nitrogen-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (N-POSS) to impart superior fire safety properties to EP has remained an intractable challenge. In this work, two nitrogen-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (N-POSSs), namely, aminoethyl-aminopropyl-hepta-phenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (AEAP-POSS) and aminopropyl-hepta-phenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (AP-POSS), were synthesized through the "corner-capping" reaction. The molecular structures of N-POSSs were fully characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 29Si NMR and MALDI-TOF MS, and the synthesized AEAP-POSS and AP-POSS were introduced into EP to solve the shortcomings of flammability. TGA results showed that the incorporation of 4 wt% N-POSS nanoparticles distinctly improved the char residue at 800 °C, which significantly enhanced the thermal stability of the EP composites. When 4 wt% of AP-POSS was introduced into EP, reductions in the peak of heat release rate (p-HRR), fire growth index (FGI), peak of smoke production rate (p-SPR), and the peak of CO production rate (p-COP) reached to 60.6%, 70.2%, 52.3% and 60.4%, respectively. Subsequently, TG-FTIR and XPS were utilized to investigate the flame retardancy and smoke suppression mechanism. Our work presented a considerable advancement for the facile fabrication of flame retardants based on nitrogen-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane compounds.

Abstract:A novel reactive flame retardant named PPDA was synthesized by neutralizing phenyl phosphate (PPOA) with 4,4 '-diamino diphenyl ether (ODA). When 2.5 wt% of PPDA was incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) alongside 2.5 wt% of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), EP/PPDA/DOPO composite possessed UL-94 V-0 rating and a limited oxygen index (LOI) of 34.2% while exhibiting a remarkable synergistic effect between PPDA and DOPO. In contrast to pure EP, EP/PPDA2.5/DOPO2.5 exhibited a significant reduction in peak heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production by 56.3%, 23.0%, and 26%, respectively, when increasing char yield to 30.2%. The synergistic system formed char with organic phosphorus structures containing P-O-C, P-N-C, and P=O bonds, along with benzene rings in the condensed phase, meanwhile forming P-containing radicals and non-flammable nitrogen-containing compounds in the gas stage. Additionally, it was discovered that the presence of the N-H bond in PPDA and the P-H bond in DOPO facilitated the ring-opening reaction of the epoxy groups, which contributed to the preservation of the mechanical properties and transparency of the EP. PPDA/DOPO was a halogen-free, low-cost alternative for flame retardants, demonstrating excellent performance and potential for future applications.
Synthesis of a Novel P/N/S-Containing Flame Retardant and Its Application in Epoxy Resin: Thermal Property, Flame Retardance, and Pyrolysis Behavior

Abstract:The combination of DOPO and 2-aminobenzothiazole (ABZ) was designed to develop P/N/S-containing flame retardant DOPO-ABZ, and its chemical structure was confirmed by HRMS, FTIR, and 1H and 31P NMR. The reduced thermal stability of EP/DOPO-ABZ formulations was found through DSC and TGA, as compared to that of EP. Fire properties were evaluated by LOI, UL-94, and cone calorimeter tests, respectively. The results indicated that DOPO-ABZ imparted flame retardance to EP, and that EP/7.5 wt % DOPO-ABZ passed the V-0 rating, and acquired a LOI value of 33.5%; moreover, when the loading of DOPO-ABZ increased to 10 wt %, it could further suppress the heat release and smoke release of the curved epoxy resin. Abstract:AbstractIn this work, we realized the detection of diamino-pentazolium cation (DAPZ+) in the reaction solution experimentally and proved it to be meta-diamino-pentazole based on the transition state theory. Quantum chemical methods were used to predict its spectral properties, charge distribution, stability and aromaticity. Considering that DAPZ+ has excellent detonation properties, it was further explored by assembling it with N5−, N3− and C(NO2)3− anions, respectively. The results show a strong interaction between DAPZ+ and the three anions, which will have a positive effect on its stability. Thanks to the high enthalpy of formation and density, the calculated detonation properties of the three systems are exciting, especially [DAPZ+][N5−] (D: 10,016 m·s−1; P: 37.94 GPa), whose actual detonation velocity may very likely exceed CL-20 (D: 9773 m·s−1). There is no doubt that this work will become the precursor for the theoretical exploration of new polynitrogen ionic compounds.
Theoretical studies of novel high energy density materials based on oxadiazoles

Abstract:In this study, 32 energetic compounds were designed using oxadiazoles (1,2,5-oxadiazole, 1,3,4-oxadiazole) as the parent by inserting different groups as well as changing the bridge between the parent. These compounds had high density and excellent detonation properties. The electrostatic potentials of the designed compounds were analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). The structure, heat of formation (HOF), density, detonation performances (detonation pressure P, detonation velocity D, detonation heat Q), and thermal stability of each compound were systematically studied based on molecular dynamics. The results showed that the -N3 group has the greatest improvement in HOF. For the detonation performances, the directly linked -N=N- and -NH-NH- were beneficial when used as a bridge between 1,2,5-oxadiazole and 1,3,4-oxadiazole, and it can also be found that bridge changing had little effect on the trend of detonation performance, while energetic groups changing influenced differently. In general, the introduction of nitro groups contributes to the improvement of the detonation performance of the compounds. In this study, the compounds containing the highest amount of nitro groups were found to have better detonation performance than their counterparts and were not significantly different from RDX and HMX.
A novel nitrogen-containing DPO derivative as flame retardant and co-curing agent for epoxy resin

Abstract:A phosphorous-nitrogen flame retardant 1-N,4-N-bis(diphenylphosphorylmethyl)benzene-1,4-diamine (DPO-N) was synthesized by the reaction of p-phenylenediamine, formaldehyde and diphenylphosphine oxide (DPO). The modified epoxy resin (EP) was prepared using DPO-N as a flame retardant and co-curing agent in the presence of 4,4’-diaminodiphenylsulfone to cure bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA). The flame retardancy of the DPO-N-modified EP was evaluated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94) and cone calorimeter test. The results showed that the EP/DPO-N-0.7 (DPO-N-modified EP at a phosphorus content of 0.7 wt.%) passed the UL-94 V-0 rating test, and the LOI value of the sample increased to 30.4%. The peak of the heat release rate (pk-HRR), average of the heat release rate (av-HRR) and average of the effective heat of combustion (av-EHC) of the modified EPs were reduced by 32.4, 27.4 and 28.4%, respectively. The flame retardant mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, pyrolysis/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses. The results demonstrated that DPO-N exerted its flame-retardant effect through the barrier effect of the condensed phase and the quenching effect of the gas phase. Furthermore, the water resistance of the EP was enhanced with the incorporation of DPO-N.
