Abstract:This study effectively synthesized N,N'-(diazene-1,2-diylbis(5-amino-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a][1,3,5]triazine-2,7-diyl)) dinitramide (3) by using 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole as a starting material combining hydrogen bonds (HBs) and strong π-π stacking interaction between layers. Moreover, two fused rings were linked by an azo group to expand the conjugated compound, resulting in a shorter interlayer distance. The new compound and its energetic salts (4–6) were fully characterized through elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The heats of formation and detonation properties of these compounds were calculated using Gaussian 09 and EXPLO5, respectively. The calculated results show that compounds 3–6 have both low impact and friction sensitivities (IS > 40 J; FS > 360 N) and favorable densities and detonation properties (ρ: 1.81–1.96 g·cm−3; vD: 7965–8248 m·s−1; p: 24.9–31.4 GPa). Therefore, they are promising candidates for high-energy and insensitive explosives.
Trinitromethyl-Substituted 1 H-1,2,4-Triazole Bridging Nitropyrazole: A Strategy of Utterly Manipulable Nitration Achieving High-Energy Density Material

Abstract:Nitro groups have been demonstrated to play a decisive role in the development of the most powerful known energetic materials. Two trinitromethyl-substituted 1H-1,2,4-triazole bridging nitropyrazoles were first synthesized by straightforward routes and were characterized by chemical (MS, NMR, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction) and experimental analysis (sensitivity toward friction, impact, and differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetric analysis test). Their detonation properties (detonation pressure, detonation velocity, etc.) were predicted by the EXPLO5 package based on the crystal density and calculated heat of formation with Gaussian 09. These new trinitromethyl triazoles were found to show suitable sensitivities, high density, and highly positive heat of formation. The combination of exceedingly high performances superior to those of HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitrotetraazacyclooctane), and its straightforward preparation highlights compound 8 as a promising high-energy density material (HEDM). This work supports the effectivity of utterly manipulable nitration and provides a generalizable design synthesis strategy for developing new HEDMs.

Abstract:It is the main task and challenge to reach a fine balance between high energy density and good molecular stability in energetic material research. In this study, two series of energetic compounds, 3-amino-7,7′-azo-[1,2,4] triazolo[4,3–b][1,2,4]triazole and 3,6-diamino-7,7′-azo-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3–b][1,2,4] triazole featuring the N4 [N-N=N-N] linkage and fused triazoles, are presented. Their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Their properties were studied in terms of density, thermal stability, detonation performance, and mechanical sensitivity. The N4 [N-N=N-N] linkages accord these compounds with high heat of formation, thus increasing the detonation performance. All fused triazoles exhibit planar structures, which result in low mechanical sensitivity. Through careful investigation of crystal data, strong π-π stacking and extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions were observed between molecules, which gives positive impact on mechanical sensitivity and thermal stability. The properties between different cations (or ions) were carefully studied. Quantum chemistry calculations were performed to investigate the potential relationship between structures and properties. Among them, compound 5 possesses high thermal stability (Td: 275 °C), good detonation performance (D: 8677 m s−1; P: 36.1 GPa), and excellent insensitivity (IS: 40 J; FS: 360 N), which makes it a balanced and promising energetic material.

Abstract:A series of furazan substituted s-triazine derivatives were designed and investigated theoretically as potential nitrogen-rich high-energy-density materials in this work. Density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to predict the heats of formation (HOFs) and compounds structure was optimized at B3PW91/6-31G++ (d,p) level. The explosive detonation parameters were calculated based on Kamlet−Jacobs equations and Born−Haber cycle. The presence of the −NO2 and − NH2 groups in the same structure were found to be helpful in improving structural stability through intramolecular weak interactions. Most of the designed compounds were characterized by high HOFs (solid-phase heat of information 71.01–518.20 kJ/mol) and crystal density values (1.74–1.90 g/cm3). In the analysis of frontier molecular orbital that some designed compounds chemical activity similar with TATB, but show better detonation performance. The predicted results reveal that some designed nitrogen-rich compounds outperform traditional energetic materials and may be considered as potential candidates for high-energy materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of both fuel and oxidizer properties into a single molecule to effectively improve the oxygen balance of energetic compounds has become one of the most acceptable strategies for the design of modern high-energy-density materials (HEDMs). To identify more powerful and less sensitive HEDMs with favorable oxygen balance, novel nitrogen- and oxygen-enriched dicationic 3,4-diaminotriazolium salts were prepared via the quaternization of 3,4-diamino-triazole with 4,4′-bis(nitramino)azofurazan and 4,4′-bis(nitramino)azoxyfurazan, and then fully characterized. These compounds exhibited favorable thermal stabilities with decomposition temperatures up to 216°C, high densities over 1.82 g•cm−3 as well as acceptable sensitivities. In addition, the two-dimensional fingerprint spectra based on Hirshfeld surface analysis were adopted to illustrate structure–property relationships. Based on the combination of experimentally determined densities and heats of formation calculated with Gaussian 03, the energetic properties were determined using the EXPLO5 v6.02 program. The newly synthesized ionic salts displayed excellent detonation properties (Vd, 9115-9220 m•s−1; P, 33.9-35.9 GPa), comparable to those of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX), thus highlighting their potential in energetic material applications.

Abstract:It has long been a driving force in the development of energetic materials to hunt for novel high-energy density materials (HEDMs) with high energy and good stability. Recently, the noncovalent self-assembly strategy of energetic anions and cations to generate HEDMs is an effective strategy for introducing an oxidizer and fuel separately into the energy system. In this study, bis(1,2,4-triazolyl)triazene containing triazene (−NNNH−) and oxidant molecules (i.e., HNO3 and HClO4) were selected as high-energy ions to develop new high energy materials by using noncovalent self-assembly. The experimental results showed that three exemplary compounds possess excellent detonation pressure and detonation velocity (P C–J: 22.8–29.3 GPa and D: 7425–8135 m s–1), which are comparable to the classical explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) (P C–J: 19.5 GPa and D: 6881 m s–1) as well as 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX) (P C–J: 34.9 GPa and D: 8795 m s–1). Moreover, 1 and 3 exhibit low mechanical sensitivities (IS: 40 J and IS: 70 J). Thus, 1 and 3 have great potential as insensitive energetic materials. Especially, these energetic assemblies have excellent laser-ignited combustion properties and can be used as candidates for low sensitivity propellants.

Abstract:Forty-eight energetic compounds by incorporating -N-3, -NHNH2, -C(NO2)(3), -NO2, -CH(NO2)(2), -NHNO2, -NH2, and -ONO2 groups to bridged 1H-tetrazole and furoxan (1,2,5-oxadiazole) framework were designed. Their electronic structures, heats of formation (Delta H-gas(298.15K)), detonation properties, molecular stabilities, and electrostatic potential were systematically investigated by density functional theory. The results showed that the introduction of -N=N- and -N=N(O)- bridges can better increase Delta H-gas(298.15K), -CH(NO2)(2), -C(NO2)(3), -NO2, and -ONO2 groups have the better effect on increasing the density of compounds, -N-3, -NH2, and -NHNH2 groups can reduce the sensitivity of compounds, and compounds introduced with -NHNO2 group have higher detonation performance and ideal sensitivity. Considering the detonation properties, four compounds (E7, G3, G7, and H6) were selected as potential high-energy materials because they have higher detonation properties than CL-20. Compared to the traditional energetic compound RDX, all designed compounds have similar or better oxygen balance, density, and detonation properties. Among them, the maximum detonation velocity, detonation pressure, and density can reach 9.61 km s(-1) (G5), 43.41 GPa (I6), and 2.06 g cm(-3) (G6). (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Efficient Synthesis of a Superior Heat-Resistant Energetic Material Based on Fused Pyrazolotriazine Ring

Abstract:Fused-ring energetic materials are considered to be promising energetic materials. However, their practical applications are usually hindered due to the tedious synthetic routes. In this work, 4-amino-3,8-dinitropyrazolo[5,1-c][1,2,4]triazin-7-ol (4) was easily prepared within three straightforward steps starting from commercially available ethyl cyanoglyoxylate 2-oxime (1). Compound 4 is a promising heat-resistant explosive, with remarkable thermal stability (decomposition temperature 332 °C) and thermal sensitivity (burst point 380 °C at 5 s). In addition, it demonstrates high density (1.88 g cm–3), good detonation velocity (8538 m s–1), and low impact and friction sensitivities (IS > 40 J; FS > 360 N). Optimized conditions for the synthesis of 4 have also been investigated, and a scale of 10 g could be prepared over one-batch reaction using the modified synthetic path with a high overall yield (46%). The advanced performance and scalable production of 4 make it a bright prospect for industrial production.

Abstract:Trifluoromethyl group substituted C-C bonded nitrogen rich energetic materials 3-(3-nitro-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (4), its hydroxyl amine (5) and 3,6,7-triamino-7H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazol-2-ium (6) salts and hydrazinium 5-(3-nitro-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,4-triazol-1-ide (7) were synthesized and fully characterized using infrared spectroscopy (IR), multinuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 19F), high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), elemental analysis (EA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies. Further, compounds 4 and 7 were confirmed using single crystal X-ray diffraction studies (SC-XRD). All compounds possess good density (1.70- 1.80 g cm-3), detonation velocity (6432- 7144 m s-1), pressure (16.38- 20.31 GPa), and thermal stability (> 170 °C). They are insensitive towards mechanical stimuli, impact (IS > 35 J) and friction (FS > 288 N). Overall, looking their balanced performance, these compounds can be a better replacement for presently used explosives such as trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Abstract:Selective regulation of stability and density via isomerism is a promising strategy for developing energetic materials. In this work, we selectively introduced dinitromethyl groups at different positions of 4-nitro-1,2,3-triazole. The regional heterogeneity endows a high crystal density by the virtue of the dense packing; on the other hand, it changes the charge distribution in the molecule, and reinforces the hydrogen bonding interactions, all of which stabilize the material. The resulting compounds exhibit excellent detonation properties and impact sensitivity that are comparable to those of HMX (Dv = 9250 m/s and IS = 10 J).

Taming of Triazole, Tetrazole, and Azido Groups: Nitrogen-Rich Energetic Materials with High Thermal Stabilities

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich energetic materials are of interest due to their potential use as high-energy-density materials in various applications. However, most compounds with a high nitrogen content show poor thermal stabilities, which may limit their use in certain applications. In pursuit of nitrogen-rich energetic materials, this study presents the synthesis and characterization of two nitrogen rich energetic compounds, namely 3-azido-1-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-amine (3, C3H3N11, N%: 79.78) and (E)-1,2-bis(3-azido-1-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl) diazene (7, C6H2N22, N%: 80.62). Compounds 3 and 7 have high thermal stabilities of 216 and 221 °C, respectively, making them the most thermally stable among metal-free primary explosives. Additionally, they show good energetic performance (vD: 8345 m s-1; P: 25.17 GPa; vD: 8275 m s-1; P: 25.57 GPa), making them potential candidates for metal-free high energy primary explosive. The energetic salts of 3 and 7 were also investigated. Among them, hydrazinium salt 11 displays better energetic performance (vD: 9089 m s-1; P: 30.55 GPa), which was on par with those of cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine (HMX). This research contributes to the exploration of nitrogen-rich energetic materials with potential applications in various fields.
DFT investigation on detonation properties and sensitivities of bridged triazolo[4,5‐d]pyridazine based energetic materials

Abstract:Abstract A series of bridged triazolo[4,5‐d]pyridazine based energetic materials were optimized at B3LYP/6‐311G(d, p) level of density functional theory (DFT), and their detonation properties and sensitivities were calculated. The results show that the NN bridge/N 3 group were beneficial to improve values of heats of formation while NN bridge/C(NO 2 ) 3 group can improve detonation properties remarkably. In view of the sensitivities, compound F2 possesses the minimum values of impact sensitivity which reveals that NHNH bridge/C(NO 2 ) 3 group will decrease the stability of the designed compounds. Take both of detonation properties and sensitivities into consideration, compounds C8, E7, E8, F8 were screened as candidates of potential energetic materials since these compounds possess similar detonation properties and sensitivities values to those of RDX. All the calculated results were except to shine lights on the design and synthesis of novel high energy density materials.

Abstract:Oxygen balance is a crucial index of energetic materials that indicates the efficiency of the redox process during energy release. In this work, a straightforward synthesis, including N -amination and azo-coupling oxidative cyclization, gave rise to 2,9-bis(trinitromethyl)bis([1,2,4]triazolo)[1,5- d :5′,1′- f ][1,2,3,4]tetrazine ( TNF ), achieving an ideal zero oxygen balance in the tetrazine–triazole framework. With a high crystal density of 1.94 g cm −3 at 296 K (1.995 g cm −3 at 150 K), TNF features an excellent detonation performance ( P = 39.7 GPa, V D = 9470 m s −1 ), which remarkably surpasses those of RDX ( P = 34.9 GPa; V D = 8795 m s −1 ) and HMX ( P = 39.2 GPa; V D = 9144 m s −1 ). Furthermore, the excellent heat of detonation ( Q = 7154 kJ kg −1 ) of TNF significantly exceeds the state-of-the-art explosive CL-20 ( Q = 6534 kJ kg −1 ). Additionally, the evaluation of specific impulse values of two new compounds, TBTD and TNF , reveals notably high values of 272 s and 269 s, respectively. It possesses the application potential as a high-energy oxidizer, especially in the formulation of solid rocket propellants.

Abstract:High-energy density materials (HEDMs) have emerged as a research focus due to their advantageous ultra-high detonation performance and better sensitivity. The primary aim of this study revolves around crafting HEDMs that strike a delicate balance between exceptional performance and minimal sensitivity. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to evaluate the geometric structures, energies, densities, energy properties, and sensitivities of 39 designed derivatives. The theoretical density ( ρ ) and heat of formation (HOF) were used to estimate the detonation velocity ( D ) and pressure ( P ) of the title compounds. Our study shows that the introduction of fluorine-containing substituents or fluorine-free substituents into the CHOFN backbone or the CHON backbone can significantly enhance the detonation performance of derivatives. Derivative B1 exhibits the better overall performance, including superior density, detonation performance, and sensitivity ( P = 58.89 GPa, D = 8.02 km/s, ρ = 1.93 g/cm 3 , and characteristic height H 50 = 34.6 cm). Our molecular design strategy contributes to the development of more novel HEDMs with excellent detonation performance and stability. It also marks a significant step towards a material engineering era guided by theory-based rational design.

Bilateral modification of FOX-7 towards an enhanced energetic compound with promising performances

Abstract:Achieving high detonation performance, good thermal stability, and insensitivity is a major challenge in the field of energetic materials. Since the discovery of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7), its energetic derivatives have been proposed as a promising solution to this challenge. So far, good candidates that have all the advantages continue to be rare. Now we propose a strategy of bilateral structure modification; that is, replacing the amino and nitro groups in FOX-7 with hydrazine and tetrazole moieties simultaneously. By using this methodology, (Z)-1-amino-1-hydrazinyl-2-nitro-2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)ethene (HTz-FOX), an advanced energetic compound was synthesized and fully characterized. It exhibits promising properties (Dv = 8883 m s−1, P = 28.3 GPa, Td = 237 °C, IS = 10 J, FS = 240 N), which are superior to those of RDX (Dv = 8801 m s−1, P = 33.6 GPa, Td = 204 °C, IS = 6.0 J, FS = 120 N). Additionally, it shows excellent combustion properties with a maximum pressure of 20.13 GPa and a very short delay combustion time of 0.09 ms, which suggests it could be a good candidate as a gas generator. The strategy based on a bilateral structure modification should be useful for exploring more promising energetic materials in the future.

Abstract:N -fluorodinitromethyl-functionalized polynitro-triazole/pyrazole were synthesized and characterized by IR spectrum, elemental analysis, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry. The crystal packing characteristic of honeycomb construction for 5a and inter/intramolecular interactions were thoroughly explored. Compound 5a melts at 74°C and decomposes at 167°C, while compound 5b melts at 47°C and decomposes at 209°C. Further structural analysis was not performed for 5b as its melt point indicates that it is not appropriate for melt-cast explosive. Both new compounds show zero oxygen balance, high density (1.88 g cm −3 ), negative heats of formation (-101.3 kJ mol −1 for 5a , -123.3 kJ mol −1 for 5b ), acceptable sensitivities (IS > 10 J, FS > 168 N) and high detonation performances ( v D > 8591 m s −1 , P > 32.7 GPa). The resluts of physicochemical properties and detonation performance suggest that 5a could be used as an applicable melt-cast explosive and a replacer for TNT.

Abstract:Here, azo-fused dinitramino energetic compound 5,5'-dinitramino-8,8'-azo-1,2,5-oxadiazolo[3,4-e][1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyrazine (4) and its energetic salts 5-7 have been prepared. Azo-fused dinitramino compound 4 exhibits excellent detonation performance (P = 36.13 GPa, and Dv = 9126 m s-1), which is obviously better than that of RDX (Dv = 8796 m s-1, and P = 33.60 GPa). In addition, the thermal stability of carbonyl compound 2 (Td = 325 °C) is similar to that of HNS (Td = 318 °C) and 2 exhibits better energy properties. These properties indicate that azo-dinitramino compound 4 has potential as a new secondary explosive, while carbonyl compound 2 also has potential as a new type of heat-resistant explosive.

Abstract:Developing energetic compounds with high performances and good molecular stabilities is considered difficult due to its inherent contradiction. In this work, the strategy for the conversion of an N atom to a C–NO2 group leading to a “NH2–NO2–NH2” block was described to improve the detonation properties and the thermal stability of an energetic compound simultaneously. Based on this strategy, the amino-nitro-amino-substituted nitramine 3 with a high density of 1.96 g cm−3 at room temperature was synthesized. In addition, another amino-nitro-substituted nitramine 9 was also prepared. The structures of 3 and 9 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 3 exhibits high detonation performances (V D: 8953 m s−1, P: 35.3 GPa) and a good thermal stability (T d: 223 °C), which are superior to RDX, suggesting its great application potentials.

Abstract:A series of 3-trifluoromethyl-6-amine-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4,5]tetrazine-based energetic materials were efficiency synthesized and fully characterized with IR, multinuclear NMR, and elemental analyses. All new compound structures were also confirmed via X-ray diffraction. Among them, compound 8 exhibits an excellent density of 1.90 g cm-3 which exceeds that of all currently reported trifluoromethyl-containing fused ring energetic materials. Additionally, it has good thermal stability (Td = 232 oC), excellent sensitivities (IS: > 60 J, FS > 360 N) and good detonation performance (Dv = 7877 m s-1, P = 26.8 GPa) which exceed the corresponding values of all reported trifluoromethyl-containing neutral energetic materials. Further, a detailed study based on X-ray diffraction, electrostatic potential, and intermolecular weak interactions in representative compounds and known compound III demonstrates that halogen bonding C-F···X plays an important role in creating good crystal stacking and reducing localized heating from external stimuli, which lead to insensitive energetic materials. This design method for next-generation energetic materials by incorporating intermolecular halogen bonding could be of future importance.

Abstract:A series of gem -dinitromethyl substituted zwitterionic C – C bonded azole based energetic materials ( 3–8 ) were designed, synthesized, and characterized through NMR, IR, EA, and DSC studies. Further, the structure of 5 was confirmed with SCXRD and those of 6 and 8 with 15 N NMR. All the newly synthesized energetic molecules exhibited higher density, good thermal stability, excellent detonation performance, and low mechanical sensitivity to external stimuli such as impact and friction. Among all, compounds 6 and 7 may serve as ideal secondary high energy density materials due to their remarkable thermal decomposition (200 °C and 186 °C), insensitivity to impact (>30 J), velocity of detonation (9248 m s −1 and 8861 m s −1 ) and pressure (32.7 GPa and 32.1 GPa). Additionally, the melting and decomposition temperatures of 3 ( T m = 92 °C, T d = 242 °C) indicate that it can be used as a melt-cast explosive. The novelty, synthetic feasibility, and energetic performance of all the molecules suggest that they can be used as potential secondary explosives in defence and civilian fields.
