Abstract:The Roper resonance, the first excited state of the nucleon, is one of the best established baryon resonances. Yet, its properties have not been consistently explained by effective models of QCD, such as the nonrelativistic quark model. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach in the Sakai-Sugimoto model that is one of the holographic models of QCD. In particular, we analyze the helicity amplitude of the electromagnetic transitions at the leading of 't Hooft coupling 1/λ . The model incorporates baryon structure at short distance by nonlinear mesons surrounded by meson clouds at long distance. The role of the Roper resonance in n p --> d (pi pi)

Abstract:In this work, a model for the n p --> d (pi pi) reaction is developed. It is shown that the structure of the deuteron momentum spectra for a neutron beam momentum of 1.46 GeV can be explained as a consequence of the interplay of two mechanisms involving the excitation of the N^*(1440) resonance and its subsequent decay into N (pi pi)^{T=0}_{S-wave} and Delta pi respectively. The relevance of the present analysis for the study of the Roper excitation and decay properties, as well as for the interpretation of other two-pion production experiments is discussed.

Abstract:We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with Q(2) greater than or similar to 3m(N)(2).

Abstract:A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core augmented by a material meson cloud component. There are, in addition, some surprises.

Abstract:For half a century, the Roper resonance has defied understanding. Discovered in 1963, it appears to be an exact copy of the proton except that its mass is 50 theoretical tool that can validly be used to study quantum chromodynamics [QCD]. In the last decade, a new challenge has appeared, viz. precise information on the proton-to-Roper electroproduction transition form factors, reaching Q^2≈ 4.5GeV^2. This scale probes the domain within which hard valence-quark degrees-of-freedom could be expected to determine form factor behavior. Hence, with this new data the Roper resonance becomes a problem for strong-QCD [sQCD]. An explanation of how and where the Roper resonance fits into the emerging spectrum of hadrons cannot rest on a description of its mass alone. Instead, it must combine this with a detailed understanding of the Roper's structure and how that is revealed in the transition form factors. Furthermore, it must unify all this with a similarly complete picture of the proton. This is a prodigious task, but a ten-year international effort, drawing together experimentalists and theorists, has presented a solution to the puzzle. Namely, the Roper is at heart the proton's first radial excitation, consisting of a dressed-quark core augmented by a meson cloud that reduces the core mass by approximately 20 alters its electroproduction form factors on Q^2<2m_N^2, where m_N is the proton's mass. We describe the experimental motivations and developments which enabled electroproduction data to be procured within a domain that is unambiguously the purview of sQCD, thereby providing a real challenge and opportunity for modern theory; and survey the developments in reaction models and QCD theory that have enabled this conclusion to be drawn about the nature of the Roper resonance.

Abstract:The electroexcitation of the ${\cal N}^*(1440)$ Roper resonance, which defines the first radially excited state of the nucleon, is examined within the soft-wall AdS/QCD model. Such excited Fock states are characterized by the leading three-quark component, which determines the main properties of Roper resonance. The differential configurational entropy (DCE) was used in the nuclear interaction with a gauge vector field for ${\cal N}^*(1440)$ transition. Comparing the main results with the recent data of the CLAS Collaboration at JLab shows a good agreement on the accuracy of the computed data.

Abstract:This work aims at determining the composition of certain N* and Δ resonances, i.e., whether they are compact states formed directly by quarks and gluons, or hadronic molecules generated from the meson-baryon interaction. The information of the resonance poles is provided by a comprehensive coupled-channels approach, the Jülich-Bonn model. Thirteen states that are significant in this approach are studied. Two criteria for each state are adopted in this paper, the comparison thereof roughly indicates the model uncertainties. It is found that the conclusions for eight resonances are relatively certain: N(1535)12−, N(1440)12+, N(1710)12+ , and N(1520)32− tend to be composite, whereas N(1650)12−, N(1900)32+, N(1680)52+ , and Δ(1600)32+ tend to be compact. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.015202 ©2024 American Physical Society

Roper Electroproduction Amplitudes in a Chiral Confinement Model

Abstract:A description of the Roper using the chiral chromodielectric model is presented and the transverse $A_{1/2}$ and the scalar $S_{1/2}$ helicity amplitudes for the electromagnetic Nucleon--Roper transition are obtained for small and moderate $Q^2$. The sign of the amplitudes is correct but the model predictions underestimate the data at the photon point. Our results do not indicate a change of sign in any amplitudes up to $Q^2\sim1$ GeV$^2$. The contribution of the scalar meson excitations to the Roper electroproduction is taken into account but it turns out to be small in comparison with the quark contribution. However, it is argued that mesonic excitations may play a more prominent role in higher excited states.

Abstract:In this work, we extend the analysis of the pion axioproduction, aN→πN , to include the impact of the Roper resonance N*(1440) together with the previously studied Δ(1232) resonance. Our theoretical framework is a chiral Lagrangian approach with explicit resonance fields to account for their respective impacts. We find that the N*(1440) also leads to an enhancement of the cross section within its energy range for various axion models. This enhancement given by the N*(1440) maintains stability even when the parameter sin2β of the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) model undergoes variations. In contrast, the enhancement given by the Δ(1232) gradually diminishes and finally disappears as sin2β approaches 1. Furthermore, the resonance peaks given by the Δ(1232) are approximately the same in both the Kim-Shifman-Vainstein-Zakharov (KSVZ) model and the DFSZ model with sin2β=12 , while the resonance peak given by the N*(1440) in the former model is much more pronounced. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.075050 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:The finite-amplitude method is a feasible numerical approach to large scale random phase approximation calculations. It avoids the storage and calculation of residual interaction elements as well as the diagonalization of the RPA matrix, which will be prohibitive when the configuration space is huge. In this work we finished the implementation of a finite-amplitude method in a relativistic meson exchange mean field model with axial symmetry. The direct variation approach makes our FAM scheme capable of being extended to the multipole excitation case.

Abstract:Several experiments suggest the existence of narrow excited states in the nucleon below the \pi N threshold. Taking all information together a series of states emerges at masses of 940, 966, 985, 1003, m_4, 1044, m_6, 1094 MeV above the nucleon ground state at 940 MeV with m_4 and m_6 missing. A model based on the excitation of collective states of the quark condensate is proposed explaining these states as multiple production of a ``genuine'' Goldstone Boson with a mass of \approx 20 MeV. The model also accounts in a natural way for the non-observation of m_4 and m_6. It suggests an explanation of the mass gap problem of the hadronic spectrum and a confinement mechanism.

Abstract:A reliable determination of the pole parameters and residues of nucleon resonances is notoriously challenging, given the required analytic continuation into the complex plane. We provide a comprehensive analysis of such resonance parameters accessible with Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering - a set of partial-wave dispersion relations that combines the constraints from analyticity, unitarity, and crossing symmetry - most prominently of the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance. Further, we study the Roper, $N(1440)$, resonance, which lies beyond the strict domain of validity, in comparison to Padé approximants, comment on the role of subthreshold singularities in the $S$-wave, and determine the residues of the $f_0(500)$, $\rho(770)$, and $f_0(980)$ resonances in the $t$-channel process $\pi\pi\to\bar NN$. The latter allows us to test - for the first time fully model independently in terms of the respective residues - universality of the $\rho(770)$ couplings and the Goldberger-Treiman relation expected if the scalars behaved as dilatons, in both cases revealing large deviations from the narrow-resonance limit.

Abstract:We compute nucleon and Roper electromagnetic elastic and transition form factors using a Poincare-covariant, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector x vector contact interaction. Obtained thereby, the electromagnetic interactions of baryons are typically described by hard form factors. In contrasting this behavior with that produced by a momentum-dependent interaction, one achieves comparisons which highlight that elastic scattering and resonance electroproduction experiments probe the evolution of the strong interaction's running masses and coupling to infrared momenta. For example, the existence, and location if so, of a zero in the ratio of nucleon Sachs form factors are strongly influenced by the running of the dressed-quark mass. In our description of the nucleon and its first excited state, diquark correlations are important. These composite and fully interacting correlations are instrumental in producing a zero in the Dirac form factor of the proton's d quark and in determining the ratio of d-to-u valence-quark distributions at x = 1, as we show via a simple formula that expresses d(v)/u(v) ( x = 1) in terms of the nucleon's diquark content. The contact interaction produces a first excitation of the nucleon that is constituted predominantly from axial-vector diquark correlations. This impacts greatly on the gamma*p -> P-11(1440) form factors, our results for which are qualitatively in agreement with the trend of available data. Notably, our dressed-quark core contribution to F-2*(Q(2)) exhibits a zero at Q(2) approximate to 0.5m(N)(2). Faddeev equation treatments of a hadron's dressed-quark core usually underestimate its magnetic properties; hence, we consider the effect produced by a dressed-quark anomalous electromagnetic moment. Its inclusion much improves agreement with experiment. On the domain 0 < Q(2) less than or similar to 2 GeV2, meson-cloud effects are conjectured to be important in making a realistic comparison between experiment and hadron structure calculations. We find that our computed helicity amplitudes are similar to the bare amplitudes inferred via coupled-channels analyses of the electroproduction process. This supports a view that extant hadron structure calculations, which typically omit meson-cloud effects, should directly be compared with the bare masses, couplings, etc., determined via coupled-channels analyses.

Abstract:This presentation opens with a brief review of lattice QCD calculations showing the $2s$ radial excitation of the nucleon sits at approximately 2 GeV, well above the Roper resonance position. We then proceed to reconcile this observation with experimental scattering data. While the idea of dressing quark-model states in a coupled-channel analysis to describe scattering data has been around for decades, it's now possible to bring these descriptions to the finite-volume of lattice QCD for confrontation with lattice-QCD calculations. This combination of lattice QCD and experiment demands that we reconsider our preconceived notions about the quark-model and its excitation spectrum. We close with a discussion of an unanticipated resolution to the missing baryon resonances problem.
