Abstract:Flavor symmetric sea quarks could contribute to the ratio of (d) over bar (x)/(u) over bar (x) in the proton, as well as flavor asymmetric sea quarks. We clarify the isoscalar mesonic contribution, especially sigma meson cloud effects in the meson cloud model. We also provide the meson numbers in the proton with different meson cutoff values. Our calculations show that a physical proton picture favors smaller cutoff of the examined range 1.0 < Lambda omega < 1.5GeV.

Abstract:Using DGLAP evolution equation with the corrections of parton recombinations, the flavor asymmetric sea quark distributions in the proton are first extracted from the available experimental data with the global QCD analysis method. Comparisons of our predictions to the CTEQ, MRS, and GRV parton distribution functions for sea quarks are presented. Based on the separation of the flavor symmetric and asymmetric sea, the possible relations between strange quark distribution and symmetric light quark distribution are discussed. The results are used to explain the recent HERMES result of the strange quark distribution.

Abstract:In this study, the proton is taken as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states. Using the principle of detailed balance. the probabilities of finding every Fock states of the proton are obtained without any parameter. A new, origin of the light flavor quark asymmetry, i.e., (u) over bar not equal (d) over bar, is given as a pure statistical effect. Abstract:The flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea, i.e., the excess of $d\bar{d}$ quark-antiquark pairs over $u\bar{u}$ ones in the proton can be explained by several different models; therefore, it is a challenge to discriminate these models from each other. We examine in this Letter three models: the balance model, the meson cloud model, and the chiral quark model, and we show that these models give quite different predictions on the sea quark contents of other octet baryons. New experiments aimed at measuring the flavor contents of other octet baryons are needed for a more profound understanding of the non-perturbative properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD).

Abstract:We calculate the nonzero Boer-Mulders functions of sea quarks inside the proton in a meson-baryon fluctuation model. The results show that the transverse spin effects of sea quarks in an unpolarized nucleon are sizable. Using the obtained antiquark Boer-Mulders functions, we estimate the cos2 phi asymmetries in the unpolarized pp and pD Drell-Yan processes at FNAL E866/NuSea experiments. The prediction for the cos2 phi asymmetries in the unpolarized pp Drell-Yan process at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is also given.

Quark Spin in Proton from Anomalous Ward Indentity

Abstract:We report a quark spin calculation from the anomalous Ward identity with overlap fermions on 2+1 flavor dynamical fermion configurations with light sea quark masses. Such a formulation decomposes the divergence of the flavor-singlet axial-vector current into a quark pseudoscalar term and a triangle anomaly term, flavor by flavor. A large negative contribution from the anomaly term is observed and it is canceled within errors by the contribution from the pseudoscalar term in the disconnected insertion in the heavy quark region. On the other hand, net negative contributions are obtained for the light and strange quarks in the disconnected insertion, since their quark pseudoscalar terms are smaller than that of the heavy quark. Our results are obtained from the 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion configurations on the 24^3*64 lattice with a-1 = 1.78(5) GeV and the light sea quark at m_{\pi} = 330 MeV. We use the overlap fermion for the valence and the quark loop so that the renormalization constants Z_m and Z_P cancel in the pseudoscalar operator 2mP. In addition, the overlap Dirac operator is used to calculate the local topological charge in the anomaly so that there is no renormalization for the anomaly term either. In this study, we find the total quark spin to be small mainlyly due to the large negative anomaly term which could be the source for the 'proton spin crisis'.

Abstract:The lightest meson pi in meson cloud model gave a natural explanation for the observed large light flavor sea asymmetry in proton,but not a satisfied explanation for d(x)/u( x). Here we take into account the a meson cloud effect, which gives a better description of the data. Meanwhile,our calculation implies a reasonable smaller probability of finding a physical proton in the Fock state \Nw> with a smaller value of A(omega).

Abstract:Parton distributions derived from a chiral quark model that generates an excess of down quarks and antiquarks in the proton's sea satisfactorily describe the measured yields of muon pairs produced in proton-nucleus collisions. Comparison of dilepton yields from hydrogen and deuterium targets promises greater sensitivity to the predicted flavor asymmetry.

Sea Quark Flavor Asymmetry of Hadrons in Statistical Balance Model

Abstract:We derive a Menta Carlo method to simulate kinetic equilibrium ensemble, and get the same sea-quark flavor asymmetry as the linear equations method in statistical model. In the recent paper, we introduce the spilt factors to indicate the quarks' or gluons' spilt $g\rightarrow q\bar{q}(gg)$ and $q\rightarrow qg$ ability. We obtain the almost fixed asymmetry value $0.12-0.16$ which consists with experimental measurements for proton, when the spilt factors vary in a very wide range over four orders of magnitude. So, we proof the sea quark asymmetry can be derived from statistic principle and not sensitively dependents on the dynamics details of quarks and gluons in proton. We also apply the Menta Carlo method of statistical model to predict the sea-quark asymmetry values for $K$ mesons, octet baryons $\Sigma$,$\Xi$ and $\Delta$ baryons, even for exotic pentaquark states. All these asymmetry values just only dependent on the valence quarks numbers in those hadrons.

Abstract:We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with Q(2) greater than or similar to 3m(N)(2).

Abstract:Although the distributions of sea quarks and antiquarks generated by leading-twist QCD evolution through gluon splitting g --> (q) over bar q are necessarily CP symmetric, the distributions of nonvalence quarks and antiquarks which are intrinsic to the nucleon's bound state wavefunction need not be identical. In this paper we investigate the sea quark-antiquark asymmetries in the nucleon wavefunction which are generated by a light-cone model of energetically-favored meson-baryon fluctuations. The model predicts striking quark-antiquark asymmetries in the momentum and helicity distributions for the down and strange contributions to the proton structure function: the intrinsic d and s quarks in the proton sea are predicted to be negatively polarized, whereas the intrinsic (d) over bar and (s) over bar antiquarks give zero contributions to the proton spin, Such a picture is supported by experimental phenomena related to the proton spin problem and the violation of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. The light-cone meson-baryon fluctuation model also suggests a structured momentum distribution asymmetry for strange quarks and antiquarks which could be relevant to an outstanding conflict between two different determinations of the strange quark sea in the nucleon. The model predicts an excess of intrinsic d (d) over bar pairs over u (u) over bar pairs, as supported by the Gottfried sum rule violation. We also predict that the intrinsic charm and anticharm helicity and momentum distributions are not identical.

Abstract:Asymmetries in the quark momentum distributions in the proton reveal fundamental aspects of strong interaction physics. Differences between u-bar and d-bar quarks in the proton sea provide insight into the dynamics of the pion cloud around the nucleon and the nature of chiral symmetry breaking. Polarized flavor asymmetries allow the effects of pion clouds to be disentangled from those of antisymmetrization. Asymmetries between s and s-bar quark distributions in the nucleon are also predicted from the chiral properties of QCD.

Abstract:We analyse the proton-induced Drell-Yan production in both the flavour-asymmetry and isospin-breaking explanations for the violation of the Gottfried sum rule. Consequences from three different forms of corrections to the flavour and isospin symmetric parton distributions are examined. It is found that the calculated results are sensitive to the choice of parameters and parton distributions, and to the ways in which the corrections are introduced. All three forms of corrections could be consistent with the recent Fermilab Experiment E772 data for the ratio of cross section R = sigma(W)/sigma(IS) and for the shape of the differential cross section m3d2sigma/dx(F)dm for H-2.

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle has inspired a vast programme of experiments and theoretical work challenging our understanding of QCD and its role in the structure of hadrons.The proton's internal spin structure is connected to chiral symmetry and, through gluon degrees of freedom in the flavour singlet channel, to the physics of the $\eta'$ meson. Why do quarks contribute just about one third of the proton's spin? Why are $\eta'$ mesons and their interactions so sensitive to gluonic degrees of freedom? We review the status of these topics and some key observables for forthcoming experiments.
